Looking Ahead - November 21

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Today, we go around the traps with the first stop at Kembla Grange where we like a lightly-tried galloper from the family of the great Galileo (Ire). At Gosford, we’re expecting a maiden prospect to improve on a debut fourth and at Sportsbet-Ballarat like a juvenile filly who is from a proven 2-year-old family.

Secretly Awesome (Snitzel) hails from a potent international family and is raced by breeder Cressfield after failing to meet his $250,000 reserve at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. He is a half-brother to the stakes winner and two-time Group 1 placegetter Frankely Awesome (Frankel {GB}) with their dam Street Secret (USA) (Street Cry {Ire}), a Listed winner in North America.

It is the family of the former champion mare Urban Sea (USA) (Miswaki {USA}), dam of the multiple Group 1 winner and champion sire Galileo and his half-brother Sea The Stars (Ire), also a five-time elite level winner and successful sire. Secretly Awesome has won twice in a brief career and with a resuming run under his belt can strike again for trainers Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou.

Gosford, Race 1, 12.44pm AEDT, Donnica Clarke Foundation H., $35,000, 1200m

The Mark Newnham-prepared Onchao (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}) had finished runner-up in a Rosehill trial before he made his first race day appearance at Randwick where he struck a heavy track and finished a creditable fourth. He is capable of sharp improvement on a much better surface.

Onchao as a yearling

Onchao was purchased by Spendthrift for $160,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale where he was part of Arrowfield Stud’s draft. His dam Grand Daughter (Redoute’s Choice) was a two-time winner and finished runner-up in the G1 Schweppes Oaks. She is a sister to the G2 Edward Manifold S. winner El Daana, who has produced the G2 Kewney S. and G3 Frances Tressady S. winner Wawail (Lonhro).

Sportsbet-Ballarat, Race 4, 1.50pm AEDT, Magic Millions 2YO Clockwise Classic, $250,000, 1000m

Camporeale (I Am Invincible) has a pedigree with up-front 2-year-old form and she was bought out of Yarraman Park Stud’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale draft for $200,000 by trainer Lloyd Kennewell and Group 1 Bloodstock. She is a daughter of Camporella (Exceed And Excel), whose only two foals to race have been successful.

Camporeale as a yearling

The dam was a talented juvenile who won the G3 WATC Sires’ Produce S. and the R. Listed Magic Millions Perth 2YO Classic and the Listed Gimcrack S. She is a daughter of the Listed Dark Jewel Classic winner Really Flying (Real Quiet {USA}). Camporeale will be on debut, but is from a precocious family and worth following.
