Applications are now open for the 2021/2023 Godolphin Flying Start program, a two-year full-time international thoroughbred management and leadership training course, and will close on February 8.

The online portal has opened a month early to allow potential applicants more time to put together applications in a process that has been made more streamlined than before.

“It is fantastic that we have been able to deliver the first and second year course during these unprecedented times,” Executive Director of Godolphin Flying Start Clodagh Kavanagh said.

“Trainees have had many of the same experiences as previous year groups as well as enhanced virtual learning and technology.

“By August 2021, when the new intake of Godolphin Flying Start trainees are due to commence the course, we will be able to deliver the best of our traditional and of our newly developed training and networking capabilities. We look forward to receiving their applications over the coming months.”

Founded in 2003, Flying Start is the brainchild of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum of Dubai and 12 candidates are selected annually to receive the scholarship, which includes course fees, accommodation, transport, health insurance and a monthly allowance.

The world’s most renowned racing and breeding locations are bases for Flying Start and the program offers trainees the opportunity to work and study in five countries. The course commences in Kildare, before moving onto Newmarket, Lexington and followed by the Hunter Valley and Dubai. The final three months of the course are spent back in Europe.

Four core learning modules

Each location offers a wealth of industry experience through racing, sales and visits to studs, stables and industry organisations. The course is balanced between practical and academic development which encompasses four core modules; Thoroughbred Production and Management; Racing, Breeding and Bloodstock; Business Management and Leadership and Communications.

The Flying Start program is accredited by the University College Dublin Michael Smurfit Business School as a Graduate Certificate in Management (Thoroughbred Industry). Other accrediting bodies include the University of Kentucky, Macquarie University Graduate School of Management, University of Arizona (Racing Officials Accreditation Program) and Kentucky Horseshoeing School.

It is the mission of the program to provide management training to a diverse group of trainees and in doing so create committed industry leaders working in existing and emerging thoroughbred markets.

More than 50 per cent of graduates of the program are Business Founders or Managers and form an educated, dynamic global network who are leading change and driving development in the industry.

Successful candidates for the program will have been employed in the industry previously, be competent horse people, excellent communicators and have a strong work ethic. For further information visit the website below.
