Off-site stallion investment working best for Glenlogan

Glenlogan Park embarked on a change of direction in 2017 when it announced it would no longer stand stallions, and the business model the Queensland operation adopted is paying off in spades.

Glenlogan had been home to stallions for the previous quarter of a century before the Innisplain-based farm decided to go down a different thoroughbred path as a specialist breeder and vendor, although stallions still remain very much in its future.

“A couple of years ago we stopped standing our own stallions and focused on being a boutique and high-class breeding operation only,” Manager Steve Morley said. “Our love for stallions hasn’t diminished though and we are still in that market.

“We went out and bought into some young horses either as yearlings or not long into their racing careers hoping they would turn into stallions and two of those went to stud this year.

“We bought into Exceedance as a yearling and he became the Group 1 winner of the Coolmore and served a terrific book of mares and also Zousain, who covered a big book and is a very good-looking stallion. Both horses had great books and were very fertile horses.

“We also sold well at the Magic Millions so overall it was quite a decent year for us.”

The Vinery Stud-based Exceedance and Zousain, a Group 2 winner and Group 1-placed who stands at Widden Stud, aren’t the only success stories for Glenlogan.

“We’re in the Newgate colts’ group as well and the first of those are 3-year-olds and a horse like Wild Ruler has showed nice progress. He was a stakes winner on debut at two and he’s won a Group 2 as a 3-year-old,” Morley said.

“He was narrowly touched off in the G1 Coolmore Stud S. when third and was the first colt home so we’re looking forward to the future with him. He’s another horse that we have high hopes for and we also recently bought into North Pacific.

“Those two 3-year-olds going forward over the next part of the season are very exciting for us and I’m sure both Wild Ruler and North Pacific have done enough to ensure they will have good stud homes.

“We are tracking along the path we hoped when we decided on a change of direction.”

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Wild Ruler (Snitzel) won this season’s G2 Roman Consul S. while North Pacific (Brazen Beau), prepared by Team Hawkes, won the G3 Up And Coming S. and finished runner-up in the G1 Golden Rose S.

Quality-assessed broodmare band

Glenlogan has around 40 broodmares and the make-up of the band is always monitored, but with a forgiving approach.

“We’ve got a couple that are of lesser quality than we would prefer, but they have come out and left terrific styles of horses,” Morley said. “A mare might be borderline and we had one called Raise Up, who would have been in that category.

“Raise Up didn’t have a deep pedigree, but left a good sort and you have to give them an opportunity. At the Inglis Classic Sale this year we sold a beautiful Rich Enuff filly for $155,00 to Grahame Begg.”

Named Dosh (Rich Enuff), the now 2-year-old came out and won the G3 Ottawa S. on debut during the Melbourne spring carnival.

With a successful 2020 in the locker, Glenlogan is now looking forward to selling a quality lineup at next month’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and Morley is in doubt the farm’s location is a huge positive.

“We’ve been very focused on physical types and where we are located in this part of Queensland is very conducive to producing early-maturing horses,” he said.

“We’ve got a great history and with more warmth through the year we get a steadier growth comparative to some of the other parts of Australia. I’m sure that laying down that bone and having that continuity is of real benefit to our horses.

“Magic Millions is a Sale and race day that lines up very well with what Glenlogan does.”

Outstanding draft

Its Gold Coast yearling draft is wholly-owned by the farm and Morley tipped Lot 504 as a potential star.

“There’s some outstanding colts among the group who I am very confident will be well-sought after and I’m more confident how they will perform on the racetrack,” Morley said.

“One of those is the Written Tycoon colt out of Madotti, the mare’s first foal. She was a Group-winning million-dollar earner and she’s set up for producing Magic Millions-style horses.

“She ran fourth in the 2-year-old race and fifth in the 3-year-old race. If you watch those, there’s a case to say she could have easily won both.

“She won the big Magic Millions QTIS race and this colt is an absolute beauty, great size and very athletic and good structure behind him. He’s got plenty to recommend him.”

Lot 378 is a son of I Am Invincible and out of the Listed winner Hijack Hussy (Hussonet {USA}), the family of Group 1 winners and sires Wandjina and Complacent and Inspiration (Flying Spur), Dracula (Quest For Fame) and Masked Party (Marscay).

“The I Am Invincible colt is an obvious one for most people and by a great stallion out of a terrific mare who is producing great types,” Morley said. “It’s a deep family and he’s all racehorse.

“Lot 892 is a Hellbent colt out of the stakes-performed mare Tibrogargan Miss. It’s the mare’s first foal and he’s a quality individual. He’s the type of horse that when the trainers look at him will be very keen to get him in the stable.

“He’s very workmanlike and having prepped a number of the Hellbents for the sales, they just love their work and thrive on it and this guy is really taking steps every week.

“He’s a professional and is toward the top end of ours, he’s an absolute beauty.”

Tibrogargan Miss (Monashee Mountain {USA}) won four races and placed in the G2 Sweet Embrace S. and is the family of the dual Group 2 winner Buck’s Pride (Pride Of Kellina).

Among the Glenlogan fillies, Morley singled out Lot 938, a daughter of Capitalist and Wabeel (Commands), a winner and black type placegetter.

The dam of the multiple winner and Group 3 performer Yamazaki (Real Saga), Wabeel is a half-sister to the champion Singapore miler Super Nninetyseven (Show A Heart) and the family of the G1 Cox Plate winner Solvit (Morcon {GB}).

“Yamazaki is very talented and heading toward the fillies and mares’ race on Magic Millions day," Morley said.

"This filly is as racy and as tougher-looking Capitalist as I’ve seen. She’s very, very athletic with a super attitude and she will have widespread appeal.”
