Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Today, we like the chances at Rosehill of a pair of well-related 2-year-olds chasing black-type honours and at Caulfield we’re in the camp of a resuming mare who is from a potent Group 1 family.
Rosehill, Race 2, 1.50pm AEDT, G3 Widden S., $160,000 1100m
Mallory (Not A Single Doubt) came home well from well back on debut to finish runner-up in the G3 Gimcrack S. at Randwick in the spring and was then turned out. She has been given a quiet trial on her return and from a handy gate should prove a tough one to crack in the hands of Jason Collett.
Not A Single Doubt, sire of Mallory | Pensioned at Arrowfield Stud
Trained by Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou, Mallory is raced by breeder Arrowfield Stud with partners and is a half-sister to the Listed Welcome S. winner and G2 Matamata Breeders’ S. runner-up Sassy ‘N’ Smart (Smart Missile). They are out of Panorama Ridge (USA) (Empire Maker {USA}) and her dam Nebraska Tornado (USA) (Storm Cat {USA}) was a two-time Group 1 winner.
Rosehill, Race 3, 2.25pm AEDT, G3 Canonbury S., $160,000, 1100m
Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) was sold by breeder Torryburn Stud at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale to Coolmore’s Tom Magnier for $875,000. A half-brother to the G1 Caulfield Guineas runner-up Aysar (Deep Field), the colt is out of the multiple winner Miss Interiors (Flying Spur) and she is a half-sister to the dual Group 1 winner and sire Russian Revolution and the G3 Frances Tressady S. winner Turbo Miss (Sebring).
Home Affairs as a yearling
Home Affairs is prepared by Chris Waller and was a comfortable winner of his only trial on this course earlier in the month. James McDonald takes the ride and from a handy gate can give the youngster every chance to shine on debut.
Caulfield, Race 8, 5.20pm AEDT, Robert Hunter H., $125,000, 1400m
Sky Horse (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) showed plenty of promise last preparation and posted consecutive wins in the lower grades. Trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace then sent her to Queensland where she was a game fourth in the G3 Gunsynd Classic and spelled after an unplaced effort in the G2 The Roses.
The late Tavistock (NZ), sire of Sky Horse (NZ)
She finished in the money in her past first-up run and with Jye McNeil in the saddle looks a strong chance to make an impact on her return. Sky Horse was bred by Ravelston Stud and was bought out of Phoenix Park’s draft at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale by Yulong for NZ$180,000. She is from a top family that features Group 1 winners The Phantom Chance (NZ) (Noble Bijou {USA}) and his brother The Phantom (NZ), The Jewel (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}), The Twinkle (NZ) (Gate Keeper {GB}), Irish Chance (NZ) (Sir Tristram {Ire}) and La Bella Diosa (NZ) (So You Think {NZ}).
