Looking Ahead - February 16

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Today, we like the chances at Scone of a pair of well-related fillies from Brett Cavanough’s stable while at Goulburn we like a lightly-tried 3-year-old who has trialled well ahead of his return.

There will be major interest in the resuming run here of Patino Ruby (More Than Ready {USA}) as she is a daughter of the G1 Thousand Guineas winner Commanding Jewel (Commands). She is a half-sister to the multiple Group 1 winner Atlantic Jewel (Fastnet Rock), beaten just once in her decorated career, and dam of the Royal Ascot G3 Hampton Court S. winner Russian Emperor (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Patino Ruby, whose half-sister Stark (I Am Invincible) was a $1.45 million Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate when offered by Vinery Stud, is trained by Brett Cavanough and was a debut second last preparation and put aside after going one better at Muswellbrook. The filly has since returned there to win a trial and emphasise her readiness for a return to action.

Cavanough also holds a strong hand here with another well-related and in-form filly in My Sister Carole (Lonhro). She was unplaced on a soft track in her only outing as a 2-year-old and returned last month on a good track on this course to comfortably break her maiden in a performance that suggested she can make her mark in a higher grade.

Bred and raced by Segenhoe Stud, My Sister Carole is out of the G2 Salinger S. winner and multiple Group 1 placegetter Sister Madly (Redoute’s Choice) and all four of her foals to race have been successful. She is a half-sister to the former two-time Hong Kong Horse of the Year, Champion Sprinter and dual G1 Hong Kong Sprint winner Silent Witness (El Moxie {USA}). It is also the family of Empress Rock (Fastnet Rock), winner of two Group 2 events.

Spectrometer (Exosphere) has far fewer convictions than his oppositions and was a sound first-up fifth in the spring before he made all the running at Moruya to open his winning account. He enjoyed a break after that and showed he was on target for a bold resuming run with a recent trial placing.

The Gwenda Markwell-trained 3-year-old is the first foal of Sensitive (Street Cry {Ire}), who is a half-sister to the Group 2-winning siblings Renaissance (Lonhro) and Sessions. They are out of the Listed Millie Fox S. winner Seances (Canny Lad) and she is a half-sister to the G1 Flight S. winner Unworldly (Quest For Fame {GB}) and the G2 Shannon H. winner Gordo (Brief Truce {USA}).
