Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Today, we are in the camp of a lightly-tried 3-year-old at Scone while at Werribee a couple of maiden performers with strong pedigrees look likely to post winning runs early in their careers.
Scone, Race 1, 12.55pm AEDT, De Bortoli Wines Plate, $30,000, 2100m
The Night Train (Snitzel) was a $100,000 purchase for trainer Paul Perry at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale where the colt was offered by breeder Arrowfield Stud. He is the first foal of the Listed Twilight Glow S. winner Indarra (NZ) (Stravinsky {USA}), a half-sister to the Listed Soliloquy S. winner Holy Moly (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) and the family of the G2 Prix du Gros-Chene winner and sire Dananeyev (Fr).
The Night Train as a yearling
A winner two runs back, The Night Train was a last-start third at Gosford where he made all he running before he was run down late. His latest outings have been on rain-affected ground, but he has also placed and won a trial on good going to prove his versatility.
Werribee, Race 1, 1.40pm AEDT, Mt Duneed Estate Plate, $23,000, 1416m
The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained Glamzelle (Headwater) has knocked on the door in her short career and is presented with a top opportunity here to break through. At her most recent appearance, the filly finished runner-up at Kilmore and with a touch of luck from a tricky gate can go one better in this.
Glamzelle as a yearling
Glamzelle was bred by Glastonbury Farm and was sold to Coolangatta Bloodstock at the Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale for $36,000 before making $80,000 to the bid of James Bester when offered by Milburn Creek at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. She is a daughter of the unraced Vonzelle (Redoute’s Choice), a half-sister to the dual Group 1 winner and sire Sudurka and a pedigree which also features the G1 AJC Oaks winner My Brilliant Star (Copper Kingdom {USA}) and Shot Of Thunder (Thunder Gulch {USA}), successful in an edition of the G1 Toorak H.
Werribee, Race 3, 2.50pm AEDT, Supercallers Werribee Plate, $23,000, 1108m
Aeecee Millions (Deep Field) has produced two encouraging runs off a break and followed up a resuming fourth with a second at Stony Creek where he adopted the role of pacemaker and kicked on well. There looks to be a sense of timing about him coming here third-up.
Aeecee Millions as a yearling
The colt was bred by Yarramalong Park and sold at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale for $60,000 to Attunga Stud, who offered him a year later with Ciaron Maher Bloodstock signing the ticket at $160,000. Aeecee Millions is a half-brother to the G3 BJ McLachlan S. winner Alpine Edge (Better Than Ready) with their dam Freezethemillions (Freeze) a juvenile winner and stakes performer. She is out of a sister to the G3 Champagne Classic winner Golden Fox (Foxhound {USA}) and further back in the pedigree is the multiple Group 1 winner Melito (Redoute’s Choice).
