Wingatui, Listed NZB Insurance S., NZ$50,000, 1400m
Race summary
There was plenty of merit in the win of the very consistent filly The Gift (NZ) (Power {GB}) in the Listed NZB Insurance S. After jumping on terms the filly wasn’t able to find cover behind the speed so jockey Jacob Lowry elected to press forward and keep the filly close to the speed.
Travelling well throughout, The Gift moved up alongside the leaders entering the straight and she took over shortly after then found plenty over the concluding stages for a dominant win.
Larpower (Power {GB}) made it a quinella for Great Britain-bred sire Power (GB) after she was given a gun ride by Kin Kwo who settled the filly just off the pace with cover behind eventual winner. Larpower tried hard in the straight but was no match for the winner in the run to the line.
Ocean Point (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}) had a nice run in transit from her favourable draw and she stuck on well when she gained clear running in the straight but she was unable to quicken well enough to pose a threat with the drop back from 1600 metres to 1400 metres.
Pedigree notes
The Gift is out of Trust (NZ) (Dehere {USA}) who was the winner of two races. The second dam Stellas Pantry (Danewin) is a half-sister to the G2 VRC Manifold S. winner Twiglet (Twig Moss).
Twiglet is the dam of Group 1 winners Easy Rocking (Barathea), and Hong Kong Horse of the Year Fairy King Prawn (Danehill {USA}), along with the Listed winner Crevette (Danehill {USA}) who is the dam of the dual Group 1 winner Cosmic Endeavour (Northern Meteor).
