Stunning day for Widden Stud’s Zoustar

4 min read
Widden Stud resident Zoustar had a day to remember at Flemington highlighted by his sons Zoutori and Indian Pacific dominating the finish of the G1 Newmarket H., and his juveniles delivering top performances in Sydney and Melbourne.

A dual Group 1 winner himself, Zoustar enjoyed a magical day with Zoutori claiming top honours in the G1 Seppelt Wines Newmarket H. at the expense of Indian Pacific and another son Lightsaber had earlier landed the G2 MSS Security Sires’ Produce S.

Lightsaber’s trainer Peter Moody is now considering a trip to Sydney for the G1 Golden Slipper S. and a race on the program for Zoustar’s daughter Glistening, who booked her spot for trainers Richard and Michael Freedman following her front-running victory in the G2 Yarraman Park Reisling S.

Zoutori, who was fourth in the Newmarket 12 months ago, left his rivals with no excuses after he gave weight and a beating to hand trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra one of the most satisfying wins of their training careers.

“It’s just great and I don’t usually get too nervous pre-race, but I was a little bit toey today. He had come on really well since the Oakleigh Plate,” Ellerton said.

“It’s just great and I don’t usually get too nervous pre-race, but I was a little bit toey today.” – Mathew Ellerton

Zoutori had finished seventh when resuming at Caulfield and Ellerton’s only concern was barrier four, but that was overcome by a masterful ride from Luke Currie.

“Luke gave him a great steer and he’s a good, tough and honest sprinter who is a dual Group 2 winner and now a Group 1 winner,” Ellerton said.

“He’s got a great CV, especially on the straight. This is a race on our doorstep and it’s a time-honoured race and we’re just so chuffed to win this race.”

Zoutori has now won eight of his 28 starts and a further 10 top four finishes emhasises his consistency.

“He was a bit of a lad as a younger horse when he was a colt and hard to handle so he was quickly a gelding. We took him to Brisbane as a 3-year-old, but I don’t think he travels well,” Ellerton said.

“He (Zoutori) was a bit of a lad as a younger horse when he was a colt and hard to handle so he was quickly a gelding.” – Mathew Ellerton

“We took him to Adelaide last year and he did nothing, I think he’s a bit of a sulk when he’s away but his record here down the straight is exceptional.”

The Newmarket field split into two divisions early before runners merged inside the closing 200 metres and Indian Pacific, who led on the inside, fought on strongly for second behind Zoutori with the 3-year-olds Amish Boy (Star Witness) third ahead of Prague (Redoute’s Choice).

Zoutori's winning connections

“It all panned out well for us and we got on the back of the speed toward the inside and a part of the track where I was happy to be,” successful jockey Luke Currie said.

“Going into the race it looked the horses to beat were in the middle to outside so we had to do it a bit on our own. The Perth horse (Indian Pacific) gave him a good bunny to chase and he was too good and gave me a pretty easy ride.

“Full credit to Mathew and Simon and their team, it was a great effort by them all.

"I’ve had a great season off the back of a fall last year and having quite some time off, I was lucky enough to pick up a couple of good ones in the spring.”

They included the G1 Blue Diamond S. with the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Artorius (Flying Artie).

“I had a bit of a rest after the spring and didn’t ride too much and that helped the body a lot. It’s been a great autumn so far,” Currie said.

O’Shea roars back into Group 1 winner’s circle with son of a favourite

4 min read
John O’Shea returned to the Group 1 fold on Saturday when Lion’s Roar (NZ) (Contributer {Ire}) triumphed in the Randwick Guineas and a 3-year-old with a strong link to the trainer’s previous stint as Head Trainer of the Godolphin operation.

During his successful three-year tenure with the Godolphin operation, O’Shea enjoyed a close affinity with Contributer (Ire), the sire of his G1 Mostyn Copper Randwick Guineas winner Lion’s Roar.

O’Shea prepared Contributer, a son of High Chaparral (Ire), to win at Group 1 level in the Chipping Norton S. and the Ranvet S. before his retirement to Simms Davison’s Mapperley Stud at Matamata in New Zealand.

“It’s just fantastic, unbelievable really, and I could see he was just bolting in the run,” O’Shea said. “I knew there was a lot of improvement in him from the other day.”

Lion’s Roar had finished fifth when resuming in the G2 Hobartville S. and the step up to a mile was ideal for him.

“He’s been a work in progress and we’ve got the G1 Randwick Guineas in mind so this shows we’re on track,” O’Shea said. “He’s a serious horse and he's got mum and dad in him so hopefully this will help the inheritance!”.

“He’s (Lion's Roar) a serious horse and he's got mum and dad in him so hopefully this will help the inheritance!” – John O’Shea

O’Shea stable supporters Champion Thoroughbreds ventured to Karaka in 2019 to purchase Contributer’s first-crop representative Lion’s Roar out of Wellfield Lodge’s draft at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale for NZ$65,000.

“We looked at all the Contributers and tried to work out which one looked most like dad. We came down to two horses and one was too expensive so we looked in Book 2 and got Lion’s Roar,” Champion Thoroughbreds’ Jason Abrahams said.

Lion's Roar (NZ) as a yearling

“I loved Contributer as a racehorse and he’s stamping them – they are strong and leggy with great attitudes and I just wish there were more on the ground for us to buy.

“Obviously, this means so much and it hasn’t really sunk in. We were hoping he would run a nice race and we’ve had a relationship with John for such a long time.

“To get John’s first Group 1 win since his time with Godolphin with one of our team of horses is a big thing given that we don’t spend a whole heap of money. We’re just a small part of his stable, a cog in a big wheel.”

“To get John’s first Group 1 win since his time with Godolphin with one of our team of horses is a big thing given that we don’t spend a whole heap of money.” – Jason Abrahams

A raft of options will now be considered for Lion’s Roar, both against the 3-year-olds and older opposition.

“He’ll go to the G1 Rosehill Guineas if all is well and we’ve got the option after that of the G1 Doncaster H., the G1 Australian Derby and the G1 Queen Elizabeth S., we’ve entered him in everything,” Abrahams said.

“Obviously it’s hard to work out with a 3-year-old where you fit in, not only in their own age group but against the older horses.

“We’ll see how he goes and we could bring him back to a mile or the 2400 metres of the Derby. It’s an open book at this stage.”

Lion’s Roar settled off the pace by Brenton Avdulla set up by Marsannay (Snitzel) and produced a powerful finishing burst that saw him out on his own at the post by 1.3l.

Change of fortune

Jockey Brenton Avdulla was pleased with his winning ride after explaining the difficult time he has been having in Sydney.

“It’s been tough for me and Sydney is very difficult and I’ve been struggling to get rides, but John has been supporting me,” Avdulla said.

“I’ve been struggling to get the opportunities so it’s good to get the job done for John, who has backed me. I said to him I would ride him quietly and he sprinted like a really good horse.”

Brenton Avdulla all smiles returning to scale after winning the G1 Mostyn Copper Randwick Guineas

Runner-up Mo’unga (NZ) (Savabeel) raced back on the fence and once he got out and into clear air the colt powered home and the filly Harmony Rose (Glass Harmonium {Ire}) did a fine job to take third off Wheelhouse (Pierro).

The favourite and previously unbeaten Aegon (NZ) (Sacred Falls {NZ}) looked to have every chance, but failed to lengthen stride as he had when winning the Hobartville and finished sixth and 3.4l off the winner.

Anamoe big mover in Slipper market after taking Todman

4 min read
Anamoe (Street Boss {USA}) earned himself a single figure quote for the G1 Golden Slipper S. with his thrilling defeat at Randwick on Saturday of the previously unbeaten Profiteer (Capitalist), who has remained favourite for the juvenile feature in a fortnight’s time.

Godolphin’s Anamoe made his first appearance in Sydney a memorable one with an undeniable finish to run down the free-going Profiteer to win the G2 UNSW Todman S. and come in from $26 to $9 for the Golden Slipper.

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Profiteer raced keenly in front and was brave in the run home with an effort that has seen him drift slightly to $5 in the Slipper market following his first loss in three appearances.

Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) finished fourth after clearing traffic late to remain on target and his stablemate Glistening (Zoustar) will join him in the Slipper after her gallant victory in the G2 Yarraman Park Reisling S. for trainers Richard and Michael Freedman.

The Peter Moody-trained Lightsabre (Zoustar) also moved into Slipper discussions after he led all the way at Flemington to claim the G2 MSS Security Sires’ Produce S. with a decision on his immediate future to be made in the coming days.

Anamoe showed his quality for trainer James Cummings in Melbourne where he won the Listed Merson Cooper S. before he was runner-up in the G3 Blue Diamond Prelude (Colts and Geldings) and came home powerfully for third in the G1 Blue Diamond S.

“This is a classy colt, no doubt about that. We’ve barely breathed on him since he got back from Melbourne and he’s got Golden Slipper written all over him,” Cummings said.

“This (Anamoe) is a classy colt, no doubt about that. We’ve barely breathed on him since he got back from Melbourne and he’s got Golden Slipper written all over him.” – James Cummings

“We tried to leave a little bit of improvement in him and that will come in the next couple of weeks. We were quietly confident that we had the colt capable of upsetting some of the favoured horses here.

“The second horse (Profiteer) pulled his head off and was obviously on the fresh side and others in the race have gone well.

“This horse has enjoyed a nice two weeks and it will be nice to draw a barrier in the Slipper and he heads there a live chance.”

Jockey Rachel King said her confidence in Anamoe had been boosted before the gates opened.

“There’s a real sense of class about him. He gave me a super feel going to the barriers and an even better one during the race,” she said.

Rachel King and Anamoe

Profiteer clung on for second and Price wasn’t down in the dumps after the event.

“Hugh (Bowman) said he was vulnerable in the last 100 metres as it was four weeks between runs and he has had 10 days off,” he said.

The G2 Silver Slipper S. winner Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) pushed through along the fence for third.

Glistening shines

The Freedman brothers pulled the right rein when they opted to run Glistening in the Reisling rather than Sunday’s G3 John McGrath Auto Black Opal S.

Runner-up on debut in the Opal Preview at Canberra, Glistening revelled in her work at the head of the field under Jean Van Overmeire and she stayed on gamely with Swift Witness (Star Witness) charging home late to narrowly miss out.

"It wasn't really the plan to lead so she’s not a jump and run, and sit on-speed horse. It was probably dictated by the barrier (eight) and I gave Jean the option of leading if he had to,” Michael Freedman said.

“I think she is a better filly ridden off the speed a bit. James (Harron) and I will have a chat about the Slipper and if she pulls up well, we’ll have a shot at the stumps.”

Glistening was bought by the Freedmans and James Harron Bloodstock for $260,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale where she was offered by Widden Stud.

“James Harron and I have done a fillies’ partnership together and this is the first filly so to get a Group winner is a big thrill,” Michael Freedman said.

Lightning progress

Meanwhile, Lightsaber has come a long way in a short time during his first preparation with a debut second followed by three wins on the bounce and shows no sign of training off.

The colt broke quickly from the barrier on Saturday and lobbed along in front for Luke Nolen and when he asked for an effort the response was immediate.

Lightsaber was clear 200 metres from home and comfortably held off Saif (Pride Of Dubai) to have Moody pondering a trip to Sydney for the Slipper.

“We’ll take him home and have a chat with the owners and see what we do. He’s got an unbelievable constitution and just does enough at home to keep me happy,” said Moody, who loves Lightsaber’s racing style. “When there are no bums in front of you it makes it easier.”

Homesman pays perfect tribute to late owner

3 min read
Emotions ran high in the birdcage when Homesman (USA) (War Front {USA}) returned to scale after producing a tenacious performance to claim major honours in the G1 TAB Australian Cup at Flemington.

The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained Homesman’s ownership included the late Michael Gudinski, an icon of the Australian music industry who sadly passed away during the week at the age of 68.

Star acts including Kylie Minogue, Bruce Springsteen and Jimmy Barnes all paid tribute after the passing of the music mogul, who was also a racing enthusiast and close friend of leviathan Melbourne owner Lloyd Williams.

Gudinski shared in the ownership with Williams of G1 Melbourne Cup winners Almandin (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), Rekindling (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}) and Twilight Payment (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}).

“Most importantly, Michael’s son led the horse back in and all I want to say is there is only one Michael Gudinski,” Williams’ son Nick said.

“Most importantly, Michael’s son led the horse back in and all I want to say is there is only one Michael Gudinski.” – Nick Williams

Homesman covered extra ground close to the pace by design and after looking down and out 300 metres from home, rallied valiantly for rider Jye McNeil to beat Best Of Days (GB) (Azamour {Ire}) by 0.1l with Chapada (Bullet Train {GB}) taking third off Paradee (Epaulette).

“It’s a big thrill and a huge team effort behind this horse. He did it tough and we had a chat with Lloyd (Williams) during the week and he had the idea of riding him out wide like the European horse he is,” Sam Freedman said.

“Jye rode him perfectly and the horse has got the tenacity and will to win. He’s now a two-time Group 1 winner and we didn’t get a slot in The All-Star Mile, but maybe this is better.

“We thought he may have been a touch stronger than the second horse and he’s proven at this distance. On the line I thought the other horse may have got the bob in so it was a pleasant surprise.”

Matt Gudinski with Homesman (USA)

It was also a moving victory for McNeil, who rode Twilight Payment to win last year’s Melbourne Cup.

“I’d like to thank all the connections for giving me the opportunity. It’s a very special win after losing Michael during the week and condolences to his family and friends, he was definitely out there riding with me,” he said.

“It’s a very special win after losing Michael during the week and condolences to his family and friends, he was definitely out there riding with me.” – Jye McNeil

“We’re as happy as we can be at a time like this. It as a tough performance by the horse, very well-prepared and it came down to Lloyd to come up with a plan of attack and it came off.”

Winner of the 2018 G1 Underwood S., Homesman has been sparingly-raced since and had three runs during a light spring preparation that netted him a first-up victory in the G2 Crystal Mile at Moonee Valley and freshened after finishing third in the G3 Eclipse S. at Sandown.

Homesman returned to finish a first-up third in the G2 Peter Young S. at Caulfield last month and showed his appreciation at Flemington of a return to a idle distance.

Savatiano’s CV complete after Group 1 success

3 min read
The James Cummings-trained Savatiano (Street Cry {Ire}) deservedly has a Group 1 victory on her resume after a hard-earned victory in the Canterbury S. at Randwick.

Cover image courtesy of Ashlea Brennan

The Godolphin mare was runner-up in the Heineken-sponsored sprint feature 12 months ago and she went one better on Saturday, albeit by the barest of margins.

Savatiano has now won 13 times and five of those successes had come at Group 2 level in the Hot Danish S., Expressway S., Millie Fox S., Tristarc S. and the PB Lawrence S.

The 6-year-old had been kept on the fresh side since triumphing in the Expressway to open her current campaign and a trial outing at Canterbury Park ensured she was ready to go again at Randwick.

Savatiano was given a cosy run in behind the leader Samadoubt (Not A Single Doubt) and she surged through to the hit the front 200 metres from home and, as always, found the line genuinely to win for the 13th time in her career.

“It was a high-quality race today and she’s been knocking on the door. She’s a multiple Group 2 winner and that’s her optimum distance," rider Hugh Bowman said.

“All credit goes to her because when I asked her to really go on and win the race at the 300 metre mark she certainly did it with authority.

“All credit goes to her (Savatiano) because when I asked her to really go on and win the race at the 300 metre mark she certainly did it with authority.” – Hugh Bowman

“I was expecting some competition late in the piece and when Mizzy came, Savatiano showed her fighting qualities and won with authority in the end.”

Savatiano, whose stakes earnings are now within touching distance of $2.5 million, is a Godolphin homebred and is a half-sister to the dual Listed winner and multiple Group placegetter Athiri (Lonhro).

They are out of the Redoute’s Choice mare Retsina, a daughter of the G1 QTC Sires’ Produce S. winner and G1 Coolmore Classic runner-up Star Shiraz (Sequalo).

Retsina produced a colt by Street Boss (USA) last year and was subsequently served by Darley shuttle stallion Blue Point (Ire).

Hugh Bowman and Savatiano

Runner-up Mizzy (Zoustar) produced a much-improved effort by charging home late for second following two previous inglorious performances with jockey Regan Bayliss describing it as a tenacious effort.

Masked Crusader (Toronado {Ire}) ran home well for third after a tardy beginning and the winner’s stablemate and favourite Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) also blew the start and thrilled rider Glen Boss by getting home for fourth.

“I thought he went outstanding, he reared badly at the start and missed it by 1.5l,” he said. “It wasn’t so much that ground as the first furlong he completely got it wrong. It’s the first time he’s done that. He raced very fresh. All-in-all, he went very well.”

Pedigree Boosters – Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale

3 min read

In the build up to the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, we have picked out three yearlings who have had substantial pedigree updates in the past couple of months.

Today, we take a closer look at a Dissident colt whose relative is a recent stakes performer in Hong Kong, a filly by Sooboog from the family of a pair of emerging gallopers and a Winning Rupert colt who recently received a Group 3-winning boost from a family member.

Lot 292 – Dissident x Pass The Jewel (Danewin) – On Account of Kitchwin Hills

This youngster already boasted an impressive pedigree page and received another notable one recently when close relative Russian Emperor (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) finished runner-up in the Listed Hong Kong Classic Cup.

The subject colt’s dam Pass The Jewel is a three-quarter blood sister to the G1 Thousand Guineas winner Commanding Jewel (Commands) and a half-sister to the dam of the multiple Group 1 winner Atlantic Jewel (Fastnet Rock), who produced the afore-mentioned Russian Emperor. It’s also the family of the G1 The Galaxy H. winner I Am Excited (Snitzel) and the G3 Frances Tressady S. winner Flippant (Hinchinbrook).

Lot 292 – Dissident x Pass The Jewel (colt)

Lot 323 – Sooboog x Regrowth (Unbridled’s Song {USA}) – On Account of Edinburgh Park

A couple of significant updates have come in for this filly as she is from the same family as the promising Mark Newnham-trained galloper Big Parade (Deep Field), who recently won his fifth race from 11 appearances, and to Greg Eurell’s Wanaroo (Wandjina). At her second start, the 2-year-old ran third in the Listed Festival S.

Edinburgh Park’s youngster is a half-sister to the G3 SAJC Breeders’ S. winner Colour (More Than Ready {USA}) with the pedigree page also featuring the stakes winner and successful sire Not A Single Doubt and the G2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint winner and sire Derryn.

Lot 323 – Sooboog x Regrowth (filly)

Lot 383 – Winning Rupert x Durian (Planchet) – On Account of Murrulla Stud

The Leon and Troy Corstens-prepared Zou Dancer (Zoustar) is a member of this family and did this colt a black-type favour when she was successful in the G3 Vanity S. and also finished a gallant and close fifth in the G1 Australian Guineas.

The Murrulla Stud yearling is out of a half-sister to Top Spin (Arena), who was a multiple stakes winner and acknowledged as a Singapore Horse of the Year. He is out of a half-sister to the G1 VRC Oaks winner and G1 Australian Oaks runner-up Tributes (Quest For Fame {GB}).

G1 TAB Australian Cup, $1,500,000, 2000m

Race summary

Homesman (USA) (War Front {USA}) took out a thrilling edition of this time-honoured feature, prevailing by the narrowest of margins under G1 Melbourne Cup-winning hoop Jye McNeil.

The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained galloper was set a task in the run, plotting a three-wide course after failing to find cover from barrier 14. Despite the undesired passage, McNeil trusted his mount’s match fitness and continued to work forward into a four-wide position.

Upon straightening, McNeil asked the 7-year-old the question and his mount quickly responded to get the better of Best Of Days (GB) (Azamour {Ire}).

Chapada (Bullet Train {GB}) did well to get home for third ahead of Paradee (Epaulette).

Pedigree notes

Bred by Joseph Allen, Homesman is the second last progeny of English-placed mare My Annette (USA) (Red Ransom {USA}).

She hails from a rich pedigree full of black-type performed gallopers. Her dam Andover Way (USA) (His Majesty {USA}) was a Group 1 winner and has thrown nine black-type winners from her 11 foals to race.

My Annette’s final foal War Cabinet (War Front {USA}) is a Listed placed full brother to Homesman.

G1 Seppelt Wines Newmarket H., $1,250,000, 1200m

Race summary

Zoutori (Zoustar) has added a Group 1 victory to his resume with a dominant display of his sprinting prowess here.

The Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained gelding wasn’t held back by the topweight of 57kgs and quickly extended past Perth sprinter Indian Pacific (Zoustar) when asked for the ultimate effort by Luke Currie.

Amish Boy (Star Witness) confirmed that the inside lanes were superior in the straight, sticking on into third after following Indian Pacific and Zoutori wherever they went.

Pedigree notes

Zoutori was a $160,000 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale purchase by Ellerton and Zahra Racing from the draft of Amarina Farm.

He is the second of five foals out of unraced mare, Atotori (Haradasun), who herself is from the extended family of former champion English filly and G1 Phoenix Champion S. winner Park Express (GB) (Anonhoora).

Zoutori is also a half-brother to talented Chris Waller-trained filly Kiku (Zoustar), who is building an imposing record at Sydney midweek level. Their dam Atotori’s most recent offspring is a filly born in 2019 by Divine Prophet.

G2 TAB Kewney S., $200,000, 1600m

Race summary

The Danny O’Brien-trained Starelle (More Than Ready {USA}) has broken her maiden at start number eight, nosing out high-rating fillies Chica Fuerte (Hinchinbrook) and Personal (Fastnet Rock) in a blanket finish.

The Group-placed 3-year-old settled last in running under Craig Williams and despite spotting the leaders more than 10l, the jockey never panicked, sitting pretty on his mount until a gap presented 300 metres from home.

When asked for an effort, Starelle shot through the narrow opening and levelled up alongside Chica Fuerte and Personal who had already broken clear.

Pedigree notes

Bred by Hesket Bloodstock, Starelle was passed in for $240,000 at the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale where she was offered by Amarina Farm.

Starelle is out of G2 Queen of the South S. winner Star Of Giselle (Reset), who herself is a half-sister to G2 Kewney S. winner Solicit (Street Cry {Ire}). The pair also hail from the extended family of G1 STC Winfield Classic winner, Kapchat (NZ) (Centaine).

Star Of Giselle’s first foal Starlike (Exceed And Excel), sold for $300,000 at the 2019 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale. She is currently in foal to Dundeel (NZ).

G2 MSS Security Sires’ Produce S., $200,000, 1400m

Race summary

The Peter Moody-trained galloper Lightsaber (Zoustar) is building an imposing record after winning his third consecutive race at start number four.

The classy juvenile was gifted a lovely ride by Luke Nolen, rolling forward from barrier three to lead the field from start to finish. His task wasn’t made easy with last-start G1 Blue Diamond S. contestant, Wolves (Wolf Cry) applying the pressure after crossing from barrier 12.

Victory never looked in doubt at any point in the straight for Lightsaber, despite the Team Hawkes-trained Saif (Pride Of Dubai) and Godolphin-bred Micro (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}) working home well into the minors.

Pedigree notes

Bred Emirates Park, Lightsaber was an $80,000 2020 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale purchase by JCS Racing from the draft of Aquis Farm. He is the second of four foals out of unraced mare Dream Cirque (Dream Ahead {USA}) who herself is a from the extended family of champion sire and multiple Group 1-winning sprinter, Fastnet Rock (Danehill {USA}).

Dream Cirque was recently served by Emirates Park and Newgate Stud’s sire Tassort and currently has a colt by leading first-season sire Capitalist at foot.

G3 TBV Thoroughbred Breeders' S., $160,000, 1200m

Race summary

The well supported favourite La Rocque (Kuroshio) was most impressive in an all the way win in the G3 TBV Thoroughbred Breeders' S. The John McArdle-trained filly was able to cruise over and take control of the race after jumping well from out in gate six.

Jockey Jamie Mott had a strong hold of the filly approaching the business-end of the race when all her rivals were under hard riding. Approaching the 300 metre mark Mott asked her for her supreme effort and she showed good acceleration to win well.

Flying Evelyn (Not A Single Doubt) continued on with a promising second after running on well to win on debut at Moonee Valley. She looked to do everything right in the run and was given a nice ride with cover back on the inside but lacked the speed of the winner.

Her Empire (Deep Field) showed good pace from the inside gate and had her chance but was found out over the final 150 metres stepping up from 1000 metres to 1200 metres and she finished in a weakening third position.

Pedigree notes

La Rocque is the third foal out of Bianslick (Bianconi {USA}) who raced once. Bianslick has produced Ray’s Dream (Squamosa) who has won four races including a win over 1000 metres as a 2-year-old, along with a full sister to La Rocque named Archipeta Beach who was also a winner at 2-years-old.

Bianslick's latest foal a Magnus filly sold for $65,000 at this year's Inglis Premier Yearling Sale to Matthew Brown Racing on account of Musk Creek Farm.

The second dam Slickly (Hurricane Sky) was unraced but is a half-sister to the G2 Schweppes Crystal Mile and G2 Alister Clark S. winner Cliff’s Edge (Canford Cliffs {Ire}). Further back in the pedigree is the 1983 G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner All Along (Fr) (Targowice {USA}).

G3 Lexus Matron S., $160,000, 1600m

Race summary

Sovereign Award (Shamus Award) has bounced back to her best, producing a dominant display of front running excellence under a daring, Damian Lane.

The Danny O’Brien-trained mare broke cleanly from the machine and continued to extend her margin to more than 8l at the 800 metre mark. From there, the trailing bunch headlined by Spanish Reef (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and Silent Soverign (Dalakhani {Ire}) presented with runs, but despite their efforts couldn’t reel in the tearaway leader.

Quantum Mechanic (Deep Field) finished the best of the rest, flashing home into second while the well-supported Lunakorn (Puissance De Lune {Ire}) disappointed, finishing a distant last after failing to let down when presented at the top of the straight.

Pedigree notes

Bred by Golden Grove Stud, Sovereign Award was withdrawn from the 2017 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. She is out of six-time winner Sovereign Charm (Show A Heart), who won her races in South Australia and the Northern Territory.

Sovereign Charm hails from the extended family of G3 WATC Sires' Produce S. winner Lordhelpmerun (Playing God).

Her most recent offspring is a full brother to Sovereign Award, born in 2019. She has since been served by Barbados and is currently in foal to him.

Listed Incognitus S., $140,000, 1100m

Race summary

Marboosha (Dream Ahead {USA}) has announced herself as an exciting sprinter on the rise, with a dominant first-up victory against class opposition.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained filly found herself in a sticky position with less than 400 metres to run but quickly extended into stride when a gap presented. From there she continued to accelerate under the urges of Dean Yendall, before running straight past subsequent place getters, Supreme Idea (I Am Invincible) and Bella Nipotina (Pride Of Dubai).

The unbeaten streak of Oxley Road (Exceed And Excel) came to an end, with the highly rated colt failing to stick on after being given every chance in transit. Trial star Pinkham (Written Tycoon) couldn’t make amends for her shock debut failure, finishing a distant seventh after leading the field up to the final furlong.

Pedigree notes

Bred and retained by Emirates Park, Marboosha is the first of four foals out of unraced mare, Boomex (Exceed And Excel). Boomex is out of multiple Group 1-winning juvenile Boom Time Savings (Secret Savings {USA}), who herself is a half-sister to G3 Maribyrnong Plate winner, Boomwa (Mutawaajid).

Boomex was most recently served by champion sire I Am Invincible and has a colt by No Nay Never (USA) at foot.

Listed Furphy Ale March S., $140,000, 1400m

Race summary

Enigmatic gelding So Si Bon (So You Think {NZ}) has notched up his seventh victory at start number 62, prevailing by 0.1l in a thrilling Flemington finish.

The Lindsay Park-trained 7-year-old found himself parked in a perfect midfield position after breaking cleanly into stride. From there he continued to relax under Mark Zahra before working off the back of eventual third placegetter Pretty Brazen (Brazen Beau) at the top of the straight.

Lone filly Odeum (Written Tycoon) never had a chance at success, finding herself pocketed on the rail and unable to work into the clear at any stage in the straight, while eventual runner-up Holbien (Pierro) looked to have the race at his mercy until the very last stride.

Pedigree notes

Bred by Morning Rise Stud, So Si Bon was a $250,000 2015 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale purchase by trainer Robbie Laing from the draft of Newgate Farm. He is the third of four foals out of Listed-winning mare Black Minx (NZ) (Lonhro) who herself is out of G2 Emancipation S. winner Faith Hill (Danehill {USA}).

Black Minx is also from the extended family of G2 MRC Autumn Classic winner Global Exchange (Dundeel {NZ}).

She hasn’t produced a foal since four-time Singapore winner Blackwolf Run (All Too Hard) in 2014.

Race summary

Lion’s Roar (NZ) (Contributer {Ire}) has produced an impressive first-to-last performance en route to winning a high-rating edition of this time-honoured race.

The John O’Shea-trained gelding rolled back from barrier 10 and spotted the lead more than 10l at the 800 metre mark. From there, Brenton Avdulla refused to leave the outcome to chance, producing his mount in a four-wide position after tracking New Zealand-raider Aegon (NZ) (Sacred Falls {NZ}) into the straight.

Mo’unga (NZ) (Savabeel) flashed home into second after being held up until the final 300 metres, while Aegon lost no admirers for his beaten performance, sticking on into sixth after plotting a three-wide course under Hugh Bowman.

Peltzer’s (So You Think {NZ}) perfect Randwick record came to a grinding halt here, fading out in the straight after working hard to cross from barrier 13.

Pedigree notes

Lion's Roar was a NZ$65,000 2019 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale Book 2 purchase by Champion Thoroughbreds from the draft of Wellfield Lodge.

He is the fourth of five foals out four-time New Zealand winner, Minnaelo (NZ) (Black Minnaloushe {USA}), who herself is out of G1 Avondale Gold Cup winner, The Mighty Lion’s (NZ) (Grosvenor {NZ}).

Miannelo also hails from the extended family of G1 Caulfield Guineas, winner and Vinery Stud sire Press Statement. She hasn’t been been in foal since slipping to Vespa (NZ) in 2019.

G1 Heineken Canterbury S., $500,000, 1300m

Race summary

Savatiano (Street Cry {Ire}) has added a well-deserved Group 1 to her resume, nosing out a low-flying Mizzy (Zoustar) in a thrilling Canterbury S. finish

The classy mare pinged the lids and extended into a forward position, eventually settling down in the box seat behind Dreamforce (Fastnet Rock) and Samadoubt (Not A Single Doubt). From there the 6-year-old cruised into the straight before racing 2l clear of Mizzy.

However, Mizzy powered home only to miss by the narrowest of margins on the line.

The Team Hawkes-trained Masked Crusader (Toronado {Ire}) proved that he’s of Group 1 calibre, hitting the line hard after settling further back than desired and Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) finished fourth after bungling the start.

Pedigree notes

Bred by Darley and raced by Godolphin, Savatiano is the first of seven foals out of maiden winner Retsina (Redoute’s Choice). This makes her a half-sister to multiple Group-placed stablemate, Athiri (Lonhro).

Retsina herself is out of G1 QTC Sires' Produce S. winner and three-time Group 1 placed dam, Star Shiraz (Sequalo), who was sold for $1.125 million at 2007 Magic Millions National Broodmares Sale.

Retsina currently has a colt at foot by Street Boss (USA) and in foal to champion British sprinter Blue Point (Ire).

G2 UNSW Todman S., $300,000, 1200m

Race summary

Godolphin galloper Anamoe (Street Boss {USA}) has put in a brilliant G1 Golden Slipper S. audition, prevailing by a narrow margin against a field of leading Sydney juveniles.

The James Cummings-trained colt settled last in the run after stepping slow from the machine. From there Rachel King continued to work through her mount’s gears before finding a gap at the top of the straight.

The race shaped up perfectly for King and Anamoe, as the highly-rated Profiteer (Capitalist) strung the field out at breakneck speed. To Profiteer’s credit, he continued to find the line and was only surpassed by Anamoe in the final stride.

Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) ran home well along the fence for third ahead of Stay Inside (Extreme Choice), who got into the clear late.

Pedigree notes

Anamoe is a Godolphin homebred out of G1 Australasian Oaks winner Anamato (Redoute's Choice). She boasts a placing behind Maldivian (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) and Miss Finland (Redoute’s Choice) in the 2007 G1 Yalumba S.

Anamato herself is out of six-time winner and Listed Laelia S.-placed mare Voltage (Whiskey Road {USA}), making her a half-sister to 1996 G1 Oakleigh Plate winner, Drum (Marauding {NZ}) and the dam of seven-time Group 1 winner Grand Armee (Hennessey {USA}).

G2 Yarraman Park Riesling S., $300,000, 1200m

Race summary

Glistening (Zoustar) has broken her maiden at start number two, holding out a fast-finishing Swift Witness (Star Witness) by the narrowest of margins.

The Richard and Michael Freedman-trained filly stepped quick into stride under leading apprentice Jean Van Overmeire and was able to dictate proceedings out in front. From there she was able to extend under light riding before fending off a wall of horses over the concluding stages.

Godolphin head trainer James Cummings held a strong hand in the race and walked away with three of his four runners working home nicely into third, fourth and fifth, while Canberra-based trainer Matthew Dale was left disappointed by the effort of his well-supported filly, Pretty Woman (Written Tycoon).

Pedigree notes

Bred by Gerry Ryan, Glistening was a $260,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase by James Harron Bloodstock and Freedman Brothers from the draft of Widden Stud.

She is the out of G3 Gold Coast Guineas winner, Beethog (Shovhog), who herself is a half-sister to Listed Canberra Guineas winner Rom Baro (Time Thief).

Beethog is currently in foal to the recently retired G1 Coolmore Stud S.-placed sire Zousain. She also has a filly by Nicconi at foot.

G2 Hyland Race Colours Challenge S., $500,000, 1000m

Race summary

Resuming gelding Eduardo (Host {Chi}) finished the better of superstar sprinter Nature Strip (Nicconi) in an enthralling finish.

The Joseph Pride-trained 7-year-old rolled forward from barrier six and refused to engage in a speed battle with Nature Strip, handing up the lead when crossed by the flashy chestnut.

From there he continued to relax under Nash Rawiller before lifting over the concluding stages after looking beaten with 50 metres to run.

South Australian-raider Bella Vella (Commands) worked home well for third after settling a distant last.

Boom filly Written Beauty’s five-win streak came to a grinding halt after the well-supported 3-year-old failed to pick up the leaders after being gifted every chance to work into the race off a solid tempo.

Pedigree notes

Bred in Victoria, Eduardo is the third and final foal out of unraced mare, Blushing (Fantastic Light).

Blushing’s grandam Peggy Ann (NZ) (Bletchingly) won the G3 QTC Lightning H. and she is out of G1 Rosemount Wines Classic winner Avon Angel (NZ) (Avon Valley).

G3 Fujitsu General Wenona Girl Quality, $160,000, 1200m

Race summary

The Brad Widdup-trained Vulpine (Snitzel) has added black type to her resume at start number 17, holding out highly rated mares Seasons (Sebring) and Emanate (Lonhro).

The 4-year-old flew out of the gates and quickly took up the lead before relaxing into stride under Robbie Dolan and from there she was able to dictate the race tempo thanks to the well-fancied Godolphin galloper Emanate and Group-performed Positive Peace (Stratum) offering little challenge to her lead.

Upon straightening, Emanate looked to have the race at her mercy, trucking up alongside Vulpine under light riding. However, when asked for an effort she failed to go past the eventual winner, who found another gear and skipped clear en route to a soft victory.

The Les Bridge-trained, Seasons worked home nicely into third at her racetrack return.

Pedigree notes

Vulpine was a $340,000 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase by Andrew Williams Bloodstock and Millsy Girls racing from the draft of Willow Park Stud.

She is the second last foal out of eight start maiden winner Elusive Leone (Elusive Quality {USA}), who herself is a half-sister to G1 Coolmore Stud S. winner and Widden Stud sire Star Witness, along with rising Group 3-winning sire, Nostradamus who stands at Rosemont Stud.

G3 Sharp Extensive It Aspiration Quality, $160,000, 1600m

Race summary

Missybeel (NZ) (Savabeel) rounded out a day of thrilling finishes with the mare proving too tough for a hard-finishing She’s Ideel (Dundeel {NZ}) and Rocha Clock (Pierro).

The Bjorn Baker-trained 6-year-old rolled along out in front, setting a strong gallop alongside Selica (Makfi {GB}) and Polly Grey (Azamour {Ire}).

The leading pair trucked up neck and neck into the straight, but the latter couldn’t stick on, fading into a distant ninth while Missybeel fended off stablemate She’s Ideel.

Last year’s G1 Doncaster Mile winner Nettoyer (Sebring) added to her growing winless streak, despite working home nicely into eight after being parked last in the run.

Pedigree notes

Bred by Waikato Stud, Missybeel was a $210,000 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale purchase by Bjorn Baker Racing and Blandford Bloodstock from the Matamata farm.

She is the first of three foals out of unraced mare Sitting Pretty (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}), who is a half-sister to G1 Randwick Guineas winner, Metal Bender (Danasinga).

She is also from the extended family of last year’s G1 Golden Rose runner up, North Pacific (Brazen Beau) and star New Zealand filly, Amarelinha (NZ) (Savabeel).

Sitting Pretty’s most recent foal is an unraced filly by Savabeel, purchased for NZ$625,000 at the 2018 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale by Yulong Investments. She has since struggled with fertility issues, missing to Savabeel on a further three occasions.

Listed Randwick City S., $140,000, 2000m

Race summary

Lightly raced 6-year-old Mount Popa (Ire) (Maxios {GB}) has dismantled a field of talented local stayers, en route to his first success on Australian soil.

The Team Hawkes-trained import was given a lovely ride, relaxing in a distant third placed rails position under leading hoop, Tommy Berry.

The red-hot Sacramento (Pierro) strung the field out and looked to being cruising in front. However, he wasn’t able to go with the eventual winner when challenged with just under 200 metres to run.

OTI gallopers Quick Thinker (NZ) (So You Think {NZ}) and Selino (GB) (Champs Elysees {Fr}) disappointed despite stepping out to a more suitable trip. The pair tailed off and finished nearest to last after having every chance in the run.

Pedigree notes

Bred by the legendary Niarchos Family, Mount Popa is raced by leviathan owner Rupert Legh and connections. He is out of unraced mare Mimalia (USA) (Silver Hawk {USA}), who herself is a half-sister to G1 The Derby winner, Kris Kin (USA) (Kris S {USA}). Their dam Angel In My Heart (Fr) (Rainbow Quest {USA}) was placed at Group 1 level on three occasions in France.

Mimalia’s most recent offspring is filly by Churchill (Ire) born 2019, she hasn’t been served since.

Listed Tokyo City Keiba Fireball S., $140,000, 1100m

Race summary

Talented colt Wild Ruler (Snitzel) proved much too classy for his opposition here first-up. Resuming, he looked the standout runner on form after rounding out his last preparation with a third behind star filly September Run (Exceed And Excel) in the G1 Coolmore Stud S. at Flemington in October last year.

From barrier one James McDonald took a sit well off Mamaragan (Wandjina) who got keen in front and refused to settle, but McDonald didn’t panic and allowed Wild Ruler to find his rhythm. Shortly before turning for home McDonald asked the colt to quicken and he picked up well, reeling in the leader just before the 250 metre mark and then held a comfortable margin on the chasers who never really posed a threat.

On The Lead (I Am Invincible) enjoyed returning to a firmer surface here and he worked home well after settling well back in the initial stages. He will be suited when stepping up to 1200 metres and beyond in the future.

Andermatt (Snitzel) stuck on well after settling just off the winner in the early stages but he lacked the turn of foot to go with him when he was asked for an effort.

Pedigree notes

Purchased for $525,000 from the 2019 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale by China Horse Club, Newgate Bloodstock and WinStar Farm, Wild Ruler is a Kia Ora Stud graduate and the third foal out of multiple Group 2-winning mare Gypsy Robin (USA) (Daaher {Can}).

She is the dam of two winners including Uluru (Fastnet Rock), a winner on three occasions at 1400 metres from eight starts. Gypsy Robin hails from the Listed-winning Indian Charlie (USA) mare Feisty Princess (USA) whose three foals to race are all winners including the Listed winner Tiger Cat Lilly (USA) (Tale Of The Cat {USA}).

Gypsy Robin foaled a filly by Coolmore stallion American Pharaoh (USA) last year and then visited Arrowfield Stud’s Snitzel again in order to produce a full sibling to Wild Ruler.

Wingatui, Listed NZB Insurance S., NZ$50,000, 1400m

Race summary

There was plenty of merit in the win of the very consistent filly The Gift (NZ) (Power {GB}) in the Listed NZB Insurance S. After jumping on terms the filly wasn’t able to find cover behind the speed so jockey Jacob Lowry elected to press forward and keep the filly close to the speed.

Travelling well throughout, The Gift moved up alongside the leaders entering the straight and she took over shortly after then found plenty over the concluding stages for a dominant win.

Larpower (Power {GB}) made it a quinella for Great Britain-bred sire Power (GB) after she was given a gun ride by Kin Kwo who settled the filly just off the pace with cover behind eventual winner. Larpower tried hard in the straight but was no match for the winner in the run to the line.

Ocean Point (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}) had a nice run in transit from her favourable draw and she stuck on well when she gained clear running in the straight but she was unable to quicken well enough to pose a threat with the drop back from 1600 metres to 1400 metres.

Pedigree notes

The Gift is out of Trust (NZ) (Dehere {USA}) who was the winner of two races. The second dam Stellas Pantry (Danewin) is a half-sister to the G2 VRC Manifold S. winner Twiglet (Twig Moss).

Twiglet is the dam of Group 1 winners Easy Rocking (Barathea), and Hong Kong Horse of the Year Fairy King Prawn (Danehill {USA}), along with the Listed winner Crevette (Danehill {USA}) who is the dam of the dual Group 1 winner Cosmic Endeavour (Northern Meteor).

Black type preview: Ellerslie, Canberra & Ascot

Rocket to take off

Ellerslie, G1 Vodafone New Zealand Derby, NZ$1 million, 2400m

Rocket Spade (Fastnet Rock) has outstanding form credentials with Group 2 victories in the Auckland and Avondale Guineas from his last three outings. In between times, he ran second against older opposition when giving the winner 8kg.

The filly Tokorangi (NZ) (Redwood {GB}) finally enjoyed some luck in the running in the G2 Waikato Guineas and showed her true colours with a strong win. She looks well-equipped to run this trip as does Montre Moi (NZ) (Showcasing {GB}).

He roared home for third in the R. Listed Karaka Million 3YO Classic and again came from a mile back for fourth in the Waikato Guineas so has to be respected. Jason Belltree (NZ) (Ferlax {NZ}) has been genuine in his lead-up racing and a definite place hope.

Milford (NZ) (Savabeel) and Lord Ardmore (NZ) (Reliable Man {GB}) have the form and pedigree to suggest 2400 metres will suit them. Frontman (NZ) (Makfi {GB}) and Tannahill (NZ) (Star Witness) are another capable pair and chances at longer odds.

Entriviere way to go

Ellerslie, G3 Haunui Farm King’s Plate, NZ$100,000, 1200m

Entriviere (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) is a gifted mare with an impressive record, four wins from five starts, and with 54kg her brilliance will be hard to contain.

Spring Heat (More Than Ready {USA}) hasn’t raced since her runner-up finish in the G1 Telegraph and is most effective with her races spaced while Mascarpone (Shooting To Win) is an obvious contender after his run for third in the G1 BCD Sprint.

Pretty To Sea (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}) is a multiple Group placegetter and looks well-placed in the handicap to go close again. Off the minimum, an in-form Festivity (I Am Invincible) and a fresh Bavella (Snitzel) appeal as other serious contenders.

Amarelinha the one

Ellerslie, G3 McKee Family Sunline Vase, NZ$70,000, 2100m

Amarelinha (NZ) (Savabeel) is a rare talent who, once into the clear, put her rivals to the sword in a matter of strides in the G2 David & Karyn Ellis Fillies’ Classic. Only bad luck looks likely to stop her in this.

Slave To Love (NZ) (Savabeel) and Needle And Thread (NZ) (Makfi {GB}) were minor placegetters in that race and are sure to again be competitive while Spine Tingle (NZ) (Super Easy {NZ}) won the Listed Oaks Prelude so well she’s hard to ignore.

Dragon Queen (NZ) (Sweynesse) was sound in the R. Listed Karaka Million 3YO Classic and not the worst on the effort and another for longer odds might be Samina Bibi (NZ) (Reliable Man {GB}), who has been racing as though the extra distance will suit her.

Explosive run expected

Ellerslie, Listed Fasttrack Mufhasa S., NZ$67,000, 1300m

Explosively (NZ) (Sweynesse) is a smart type who finished determinedly to run second in the G3 Almanzor Trophy. He was beaten by Need I Say More (No Nay Never {USA}) and the extra trip here may reverse that result.

El Tirador (NZ) (Shocking) has been impressive winning his last two and can cope with a step-up in class and Cornflower Blue (NZ) (Savabeel) is a quality filly. She hasn’t raced since third in the G1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas and has raced well fresh in the past.

Babylon Berlin (All Too Hard) has the advantage of recent racing as an easy last-start winner and will be a threat if she’s left alone in front. Opalescence (NZ) (Showcasing {GB}) can’t be taken lightly either with her G3 Bonecrusher S. victory a sound form reference.

Tiger to roar

Canberra, G3 John McGrath Auto Black Opal S., $250,000, 1200m

Rocket Tiger (Cluster) has measured up in good company during a brief career with a Randwick victory on Boxing Day to his credit and a last-start second in the G2 Silver Slipper S. so this looks well within his range.

Bourbon Flyer (Flying Artie) was a smart debut winner on the Kensington track and should be further improved with that experience. Akihiro (Maurice {Jpn}) was fifth when resuming and can be expected to strip fitter for this test.

Construct (I Am Invincible) has yet to win, but he has been racing well in strong company and was a last-start seventh, and only 4l off the winner, in the G1 Blue Diamond S. That is a performance that puts him right in the finish here.

Kalashnikov (Capitalist) showed his true colours last time out and can go on with the good work and gives trainers Peter and Paul Snowden a strong hand in the race.

Academy looks well-placed

Canberra, Listed Workwear National Sprint, $150,000, 1400m

Academy (Shamus Award) is a smart and progressive sprinter in good form, as evidenced by his last-start second at Randwick. He drops 2.5kg and has also drawn well.

Brave Song (Your Song) has three consecutive stakes placings to his credit and a top chance to add to that haul here while Just Thinkin’ (So You Think {NZ}) is fresh and is a past first-up winner to give serious consideration to.

Brave Song’s stablemate Poetic Charmer (Your Song) is racing well and among the leading hopes in an even line-up. Handle The Truth (Star Witness) has the home track advantage, which he has previously used to a winning advantage four times and was a sound last-start third at Rosehill.

Filly in right form

Ascot, Listed Supremacy S., $100,000, 1000m

Heavenly Waters (Headwater) is a sharp filly and her form speaks for itself after consecutive runner-up finishes, the latest of them when narrowly tipped out in the R. Listed Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic.

Policiere (Safeguard) looked good in her first campaign netting a brace of wins and has had a trial to fit her for her return, as has the undefeated Femme Fatale (Shooting To Win).

Pixie Chix (Rommel) has the benefit of recent racing and was an easy winner on the course last time out at the expense of race rival Featherweight (Snippetson), while Spin The Knife (Snippetson) won well enough on debut to consider again.

Eduardo up to the Challenge

Rejuvenated sprinter Eduardo (Host {Chi}) had to set a new 1000 metre track record at the Randwick track to lower the colours of Nature Strip (Nicconi) in the G2 Challenge S.

The Joseph Pride-trained sprinter stopped the clock at 55.2s to break the previous best time posted by the multiple The Everest winner Redzel (Snitzel).

“I could see he was in the fight and what an amazing performance, they’ve carved up the track record,” Pride said. “He deserves all the accolades this horse and the team at home, I’m absolutely pumped.”

Eduardo (yellow silks) and Nature Strip (outside)

Eduardo was making his first appearance since he ran fourth at Rosehill in the spring and prior to that had gone far too hard in front in The Everest, in which he faded to beat one runner home.

“I’m trying to forget about that and today, he’s beaten the best sprint horse in Australia. He’s 100 per cent sound and he’s going to be hard to beat in the G1 The Galaxy H.,” Pride said. “I hope the handicapper is a bit kind to him when they put the weights out for The Galaxy.”

Sydney on radar

Trainer Danny O’Brien is likely to raise the bar with Sovereign Award (Shamus Award) following her all-the-way victory in the G2 Lexus Matron S. at Flemington.

She went out to a clear lead for rider Damien Oliver and with the benefit of two lead-up runs she had the race fitness to stay on strongly for the ninth win of her career.

“She’s a really good mare who has been building to this. She handles wet tracks as well so she could go to Sydney, the G1 Coolmore might be the ideal set-up for her,” O’Brien said.

Impressive return

Wild Ruler (Snitzel) set himself up for another crack at a Group 1 sprint with a blazing return at Randwick on Saturday.

In his first start since finishing third in the G1 Coolmore Stud S. in the spring, he was untested to win the Listed Tokyo City Keiba Fireball S.

Wild Ruler

“He just needed a little bit more time and had the benefit of a couple of nice trials,” co-trainer Paul Snowden said. “He was very dominant late and was always going to go into the G1 The Galaxy second-up. He’ll drop a lot in weight and handles all conditions.”

Wild Ruler sat in second spot behind tearaway leader Mamaragan (Wandjina) and when he folded in the straight dashed away to account for On The Lead (I Am Invincible).

2YO run continues

Mornington trainer John McArdle struck another winning 2-year-old blow when La Rocque (Kuroshio) proved too slick for her rivals in the G3 TBV Thoroughbred Breeders’ S. at Flemington.

She is now unbeaten in two appearances, as is stablemate Tycoon Humma (Capitalist), who won the Listed Festival S. on the course seven days ago.

La Rocque

La Rocque was quickly into stride to lead and when asked for a serious effort by Jamie Mott asserted her superiority to beat Flying Evelyn (Not A Sigle Doubt).

“There’s plenty of improvement in her, she’s a very green horse. I think she’ll go to the paddock and like Tycoon Humma come back for the early spring races,” McArdle said.

Zahra plays his part

So Si Bon (So You Think {NZ}) was given a fine ride by Mark Zahra and the 7-year-old responded with a determined finish to claim the Listed Furphy Ale March S.

“It was great to see him win and it was a great ride by Mark, he was the key to this great result,” co-trainer Ben Hayes said.

So Si Bon was a strong fifth when resuming in the G1 Futurity S. and has now won three times when produced second-up.

Future looking good

Co-trainer Michael Hawkes is confident the import Mount Popa (Ire) (Maxios {GB}) can make his mark in stronger company in Australia.

He produced the 6-year-old to win for the second time when successful in the Listed Randwick City S. in the hands of Tommy Berry.

“Tommy had him travelling beautifully and he accelerated well. He’s a work in progress, but this bloke has got a lot more in store,” Michael Hawkes said.

Mount Popa (Ire) (yellow cap)

Top resuming run

The Emirates Park-bred and raced Marboosha (Dream Ahead {USA}) showed she was in for a lucrative campaign with a stylish first-up win in the Listed Incognitus S. at Flemington.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained filly ended her last preparation with a runner-up finish in the G3 Red Roses S. and black-type success now beckons the filly.

“Peter and Paul were very happy with her trials and she got a lovely run and when she got the gap she exploded through,” stable representative Andrew Angelone said.

“It was good for the connections to get this result and she’s got a very bright future.”

Dream Awapuni debut

I Wish I Win (NZ) (Savabeel) made a perfect start to his career with a comfortable debut victory at Awapuni this afternoon.

Unbeaten in two lead-up trials, the Waikato Stud-bred and raced 2-year-old settled outside of the leader and lengthened stride in the straight to land the HR Jones & Co Juvenile.

I Wish I Win (NZ) | Image courtesy of Peter Rubery at Race Images

“He’s a horse that has looked very good and we’ve all got a lot of time for him,” trainer Jamie Richards said. “I said to Johnathan (Parkes, jockey) that ideally, we would like to teach him a bit and get some cover, but if it was going to be cat and mouse and no tempo to be positive.”

I Wish I Win is a half-brother to G3 Premier’s Cup winner Another Dollar (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}) while his brother and stablemate No Limits (NZ), who has yet to win in a brief career, was bought by Te Akau’s David Ellis for NZ$1.4 million at New Zealand Bloodstock’s Karaka Sale in 2019.

Elliot accepts penalty

Irish National Hunt trainer Gordon Elliott said he is “paying a very heavy price” but that he has no complaints after being handed a 12-month suspension by the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB), with the last six months of the ban suspended.

While it has been announced that the latter second half of the ban has been suspended, it has yet to be announced for how long that suspension would apply and what level of offence would cause it to be triggered. Elliott has not been fined, but was ordered to pay €15,000 (AU$28,800) toward the IHRB's costs.

The referrals committee of the IHRB heard evidence relating to the social media release last weekend of a disturbing photograph showing Elliott sitting astride a dead horse on his gallops in Co Meath.

After being handed his penalty, Elliott released a statement on his Twitter account and said: “I accept my situation and my sanction and am satisfied with my engagement with the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board. It is not an easy job to sit on the panel, but I was dealt with fairly.”

Looking Ahead - March 7

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we will aim to give you something to follow.

Today, at Canberra we’re in the corner of a half-brother to a star of Hong Kong racing and an expensive colt who will enjoy a drop back in grade. At Ascot, we like the feature race chances of a filly who has made an impressive start to her career.

Canberra, Race 1, 1.20pm AEDT, Landhq H., $30,000, 1200m

The well-related Quiet Riot (Fastnet Rock) has been taken along quietly by trainer Bjorn Baker and following a debut victory at Warwick Farm was turned out after finishing fourth at Canterbury Park. The 4-year-old has been given two trials to ready him for his return and from a handy gate can successfully resume.

Quiet Riot as a yearling

Quiet Riot was a $200,000 buy for Baker at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale where he was offered by Element Hill. He is a half-brother to the star Hong Kong galloper Golden Sixty (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}), winner of three Group 1 titles. Their dam Gaudeamus (USA) (Distorted Humor {USA}) won the G2 Debutante S. in Ireland and is from the family of the former champion European filly Bosra Sham (USA) (Woodman {USA}) and her brother, the multiple Group 1 winner and sire Hector Protector (USA).

Canberra, Race 7, 5.10pm AEDT, G3 John McGrath Auto Black Opal S., $250,000, 1200m

Bred and sold by Manx Park, Construct (I Am Invincible) was purchased for $650,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale by the China Horse Club, Newgate Bloodstock and Stonestreet. He is the first to race for the four-time winner Martindale Hall (Lonhro), a daughter of the 2-year-old winner and G3 Blue Diamond Prelude (Fillies) and G3 Blue Diamond Preview (Fillies) placegetter Romantic Flyer (Flying Spur).

Construct as a yearling

Construct is prepared by Peter and Paul Snowden and, while still a maiden, has performed with distinction in stronger fields than this. He was a debut second in the G3 Breeders’ Plate and last time out he was seventh, but only 4l off the winner Artorius (Flying Artie) in the G1 Blue Diamond S. That form will make him ultra-competitive in this.

Ascot, Race 7, 4.55pm AEDT, Listed Supremacy S., $100,000, 1000m

Heavenly Waters (Headwater) has already showed a good return on a modest investment with a strong start to her career. She was the debut winner of the Crystal Slipper over this course and has since added two further placings, including a gallant last-start second in the R. Listed Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic.

Heavenly Waters as a yearling

She is trained by Roy Rogers, who bought the filly out of Secret View Thoroughbreds’ draft at the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale for just $9000. She is a daughter of the Snitzel mare Serafina who is a half-sister to the multiple winner and stakes performer Andromache (Charge Forward). Their dam is the two-time South African Group 1 winner Mythical Play (NZ) (Defensive Play {USA}).
