Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Today, we look at 2-year-old prospects around the country and on the repeat chances of a trio of last-start winners in action at Hawkesbury, Morphettville and Eagle Farm.
Hawkesbury, Race 1, 11.50am AEST, St John’s Park Bowling Club Clarendon S., $125,000, 1400m
Gleneagles (Capitalist) was an impressive winner on this course when resuming last month in his first appearance from trainer David Payne’s quarters. The colt was well-supported on that occasion and will be well-placed over 1400 metres the justify his short odds in the hands of Jason Collett.
Gleneagles as a yearling
Bred by B2B Bloodstock, Gleneagles was purchased at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale by Wattle Bloodstock for $500,000. He is the first foal of the former talented race mare Scarlet Billows (Street Boss {USA}), who won six races including the G3 Hong Kong Jockey Club S. The second dam Smytzer’s Rivalry (Made Of Gold {USA}) was also a gifted performer and successful in the G3 SAJC Sires’ Produce S.
Morphettville, Race 1, 11.45am AEST, Listed Without Fear S., $107,250, 1050m
See You In Spring (Siyouni {Fr}) was bred by Woodpark Stud and offered by Highlands Racing & Bloodstock at the Inglis Ready2Race Sale. The filly was bought by First Light Racing, agent Paul Willetts and Busuttin/Young Racing for $85,000.
See You In Spring as a yearling
The dam Spring Colours (GB) (Shamardal {USA}) is out of stakes performer Born Something (Ire) (Caerleon {USA}) and she is a half-sister to the mighty Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa {USA}), a Champion European Mare and 11-time Group 1 winner. See You In Spring was a trial winner before she produced a dominant performance on debut to lead all the way for a 1.25l victory and from barrier two looks a prime prospect again.
Eagle Farm, Race 6, 2.29pm AEST, Listed Treasury Brisbane Dalrello S., $140,000, 1000m
The Stifmeister (Lonhro) looks a decent prospect after finishing runner-up at his first appearance and then rounded off strongly to win over this course last month. He has since been freshened by trainer Stuart Kendrick and with James Orman in the stable and a handy barrier of five appeals as a top chance in this lineup.
The Stifmeister as a 2-year-old
The youngster was offered at the Magic Millions Gold Coast 2YOs In Training Sale and bought by Krew Racing for $47,500. He is a son of Hot Mama (Duke Of Marmalade {USA}), who was successful on four occasions and she is out of a sister to the G3 Blue Diamond Prelude (Fillies) and Listed Maribyrnong Trial S. winner Northeast Sheila (Keltrice) and the family of the G2 Thousand Guineas Prelude winner and G1 Thousand Guineas placegetter Instant Celebrity (Not A Single Doubt).
