Northam, G3 Northam Mazda S., $150,000, 1100m

Race summary

The Bernie Miller-trained Cup Night (Maschino) has caused a minor upset in the G3 Northam Mazda S. to claim his third stakes success.

The 5-year-old gelding, having his 26th start, was the beneficiary of a positive ride from Patrick Carbery, who rode him near the pace and allowed him to kick clear of his rivals in the straight.

He was able to hold off a late charge from veteran sprinter Rock Magic (Redoute's Choice) to win by 1.05l, with Money Matters (Canford Cliffs {Ire}) a short margin away in third.

Short-priced favourite Flirtini (Artie Schiller {USA}) could not find the space in the straight to unleash a run, and was on the heels of the placegetters, beaten 1.8l into fifth.

Cup Night, who has also won the 2019 Listed Raconteur S. and 2020 Scenic Blast S., has now won over $500,000 in prizemoney, with nine wins in total.

Breeding notes

Bred by Boldline Enterprises, Cup Night is one of four stakes winners by Alwyn Park stallion Maschino, whose daughter, Fabergino, won the same Northam race in 2020.

Cup Night was never offered through a yearling sale and was retained to race by his trainer and is also owned by various members of the Carbery family.

His dam, Walk In Beauty (Barely A Moment) has produced just the one winner and was a two-time winner on the racetrack herself. She is a granddaughter of Listed winner Bank Burst (Vain) from an extended family that also includes Group 1-winning duo Allez Wonder (Redoute's Choice) and Tivaci.

Walk In Beauty had a weanling colt by Maschino and is in foal to that stallion again.
