New Kingstar stallion an imposing individual

It’s going to be hard for breeders to say no to Kingstar Farm's newcomer Time To Reign after they have got up close and personal with the stallion, according to Manager Adam Cook.

Kingstar announced the acquisition this week of the lightly tried G2 Silver Slipper S. winner Time To Reign, who will stand alongside Bull Point, Unite And Conquer and Lord Of The Sky at Matthew Sandblom’s property.

“Time To Reign stands 16.1h and he’s got a big shoulder and hip, good girth and length and has a beautiful head. He’s correct and quite simply, if anyone comes and has a look at him they definitely won’t be disappointed,” Cook said.

“He is the perfect type to be standing in the Hunter Valley and certainly doesn’t look out of place against some of the best types standing at some of the biggest stud farms in Australia.”

Kingstar wasn’t seriously pursuing any additions to its roster for 2021, but when opportunity knocked it couldn’t refuse opening another stable door.

“We weren’t actively looking for another stallion this year, but when we found out that this horse might be available we certainly put our heads together,” Cook said.

“We had a look at his pedigree and the horse himself and decided we couldn’t refuse him. The fact that he is a G2 Silver Slipper winner and a half-brother to a G1 Golden Slipper winner and a very good type to boot, we just had to go for him.”

The outstanding success of precociously bred and performed first-season sires this season was another major factor in securing Time To Reign.

“Off the back of what we have seen with these stallions Newgate are standing, they have delivered early 2-year-olds who are very good types and we’re hoping to replicate the same sort of form as that,” Cook said.

Time To Reign was purchased out of Yarraman Park Stud’s draft at the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $325,000 with the ticket signed by Darby Racing, de Burgh Equine and Portelli Racing.

He is a son of the multiple winner Courgette (Charge Forward), whose first foal to race was Gary Portelli’s G1 Golden Slipper S. winner She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain).

Courgette is a daughter of the unraced Marscay mare Our Farm Girl, a sister to the Listed Gimcrack S. winner Millie and the second dam is the G2 Reisling Slipper Trial S. winner and G1 AJC Oaks runner-up Sunshine Sally (Cheraw {Ire}).

Precocious colt

Time To Reign won his first two starts, and accounted for the subsequent multiple Group 1 winner and now Darley resident Bivouac on debut, before claiming Silver Slipper honours. He ended his 2-year-old season when fifth in the Golden Slipper.

He looked set for a successful 3-year-old campaign, which was unfortunately derailed by issues and he will begin the second phase of his career at Kingstar at an introductory service fee of $9900 (inc GST).

“He caught a bug and never really recovered from it, hence his retirement and coming to us,” Cook said. “We work hard at Kingstar trying to find the right horse at a price point, so anyone on any budget can get into the industry.

“Matthew has always said the more people involved the merrier and that’s what everyone wants. The more people involved in the breeding industry the better it will be.”
