Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we will aim to give you something to follow.
Today, we are keen on the chances of a promising colt at Rosehill and at Flemington we like a filly who impressed on debut. A tidy last-start winner is our tip in the Listed 2-year-old event at Doomben.
Rosehill, Race 2, 12pm AEST, Rosehill Bowling Club H., $125,000, 1300m
Kalino (Pierro) was offered at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale by Tyreel Stud and signed for at $210,000 by Star Thoroughbreds and the Randwick Bloodstock Agency (FBAA). The colt is a son of Lanikai (I Am Invincible) and she was successful three times up to 1100 metres and is out of a half-sister to the G1 Oakleigh Plate winner River Dove (Hurricane Sky), dam of the G2 Silver Slipper S. winner and sire Headwater.
Kalino as a yearling
Also featuring in the pedigree is this season’s G1 Champagne S. winner Captivant (Capitalist) and the G1 New Zealand Derby winner Crown Prosecutor (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}). Trained by Chris Waller, Kalino was a debut winner before he missed out in the G3 Kindergarten S. and then came from last to finish fourth at Gosford. A step up in trip here looks ideal for the youngster.
Flemington, Race 3, 12.55pm AEST, Racing.com Plate, $125,000, 1400m
Fashion Avenue (Pride Of Dubai) gave a strong account of herself at the first time of asking when she rounded off well at Cranbourne to finish runner-up. She will no doubt be much improved for the experience and with Michael Dee to take the reins looks a good chance of going one better.
Fashion Avenue as a yearling
Trained by Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig, Fashion Avenue was bought by Lindsay Park Racing and Andrew Williams Bloodstock for $150,000 at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale where she was in the Bucklee Farm draft. She is out of the Listed Durbridge S. winner Classy Chloe (Danerich), who has also produced the winner and R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic placegetter Conceited (Brazen Beau). The dam is also a daughter of a half-sister to the G2 PJ O’Shea S. winner Hey Pronto (NZ) (Faltaat {USA}).
Doomben, Race 3, 12.44pm AEST, Listed City Property Services Carter S., $150,000, 1200m
Socialist (Capitalist) has shown pleasing improvement through her short career and was runner-up two runs back behind Xtremetime (Extreme Choice), who has since won again, and then led all the way at Canterbury Park to open her winning account. She has drawn a handy barrier in gate six and will have the services of Kerrin McEvoy.
Socialist as a yearling
Co-trainer Ciaron Maher purchased Socialist from the draft of Kitchwin Hills for $130,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. She is out of the Listed Pewsey Vale S. winner Baby Corn (Exceed And Excel), whose six foals to race have all been successful and includes the multiple Group 1 placegetter Cornrow (Duporth). The dam is a daughter of the G3 Matriarch S. winner Sweet Corn (Scenic {Ire})
