Waller all the way in Derby

Explosive Jack (NZ) (Jakkalberry {Ire}) came up just short in his quest for a historic fourth Derby on Saturday, eclipsed by a Chris Waller quinella as Kukeracha (NZ) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) and Senor Toba (Toronado {Ire}) fought out the finish of the G1 Moet & Chandon Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm.

Throughout the three weeks since Explosive Jack added the G1 South Australian Derby at Morphettville to his previous victories in the G1 Australian Derby at Randwick and the Listed Tasmanian Derby at Hobart, the remarkable 3-year-old dominated the countdown to the Brisbane Classic, where he would attempt to become the first horse in more than four decades to win a Derby in four different states.

But it proved to be a bridge too far and he had to settle for a gallant third, beaten just over 1l by the fresher legs of Kukeracha and Senor Toba.

Kukeracha went into the Derby slightly under the radar at $11, despite being a two-race winner who had picked up placings in the G2 Queensland Guineas and G3 Rough Habit Plate in his last two lead-up runs.

But he capitalised on a dream run on Saturday from jockey James McDonald, settling into a beautiful rhythm in midfield behind a strong early pace.

McDonald pushed the button in the straight and drove Kukeracha through an opening four off the rail, charging into contention alongside the strong-finishing Explosive Jack.

Stablemate Senor Toba loomed out wide with a menacing late run, but Kukeracha and McDonald saw him coming. Kukeracha rose to the challenge and never let Senor Toba get past him, maintaining a narrow advantage all the way to the line in a nail-biting finish.

It was Waller’s second Queensland Derby win, following on from Hawkspur (Purrealist) in 2013.

Saturday’s triumph brought a long-range plan to fruition for Waller, whose high regard for Kukeracha dates all the way back to a debut victory at Geelong as an autumn 2-year-old in April of last year.

“We had a great opinion of him as a 2-year-old, but he just lost his way a little bit,” the Champion trainer said. “It’s the typical story – he was gelded and just taken through the system.

“We brought him up here to run at Eagle Farm in the summer (a win over 1600 metres on Boxing Day), and he ran very well. I just wanted to give him some experience on this track, and maybe that’s been a good move. His run in the Queensland Guineas was good, his last start in the Rough Habit was good, and today was brilliant.

“Our horses had two great rides. James had the best draw (gate two on Kukeracha, compared to 18 for Senor Toba), so we won’t give him as much credit!

"Our horses had two great rides. James (McDonald) had the best draw (gate two on Kukeracha, compared to 18 for Senor Toba), so we won’t give him as much credit!" - Chris Waller

“For Hugh (Bowman) to be able to slot Senor Toba in and get him in the position he did was a special ride.

“I saw Explosive Jack, with all his form, kicking through on the inside, and I thought our horses would probably just run a nice second or third.

“To get this result is a real credit to both horses, and to Lofty (stable foreman Brett Killion) and the team up here in Queensland. They’ve done a fantastic job with this horse.”

Bought by Mulcaster Bloodstock for NZ$130,000 at the 2019 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale, Kukeracha has now had 13 starts for three wins, five placings and $583,245 in stakes.

He races in the colours of prominent Waller client Neville Morgan, who has previously enjoyed Group 1 success with Waller trainees such as Rangirangdoo (NZ) (Pentire {GB}), Kermadec (NZ) and Kolding (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}). He also won the R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic earlier this year with Shaquero (Shalaa {Ire}).

“He’s a proud Queenslander, which makes this win – and the Magic Millions win earlier in the year with his good mate David Devine – very special,” Waller said.

Another Waikato success

Kukeracha was bred by Waikato Stud’s resident vet Dr Chris Phillips, who purchased his dam Portrait Of A Lady (USA) (A.P. Indy {USA}) – with the Derby winner in utero – for $40,000 at the 2017 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast.

The resulting foal was offered by Waikato Stud at the 2019 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale at Karaka, where he was picked out by Mulcaster Bloodstock.

Portrait Of A Lady is a half-sister to Layman (USA) (Sunday Silence {USA}), who won the G3 Prix de Cabourg and placed in the G1 Prix Morny and Grand Criterium. Her dam is a three-quarter sister to the dam of highly successful sire Iffraaj (GB), while influential sire Cape Cross (Ire) and Group 1 winners such as Alydaress (USA) (Alydar {USA}), Park Appeal (Ire) (Ahonoora {GB}), Diktat (GB) (Warning {GB}) and Hot Snitzel (Snitzel) also feature on the pedigree page.

Herself a winner over a mile in the United States, Portrait Of A Lady is the dam of five winners from seven foals to race. Kukeracha became the second stakes winner, joining the G3 Keith Nolan Classic and Listed Scone Cup winner Cameo (Shamardal {USA}). The latter was purchased by Rosemont Stud at the Magic Millions National Sale last week for $210,000.

Since producing Kukeracha in 2017, Portrait Of A Lady has had a filly by Sacred Falls (NZ), a colt by Sacred Falls and a filly by Ocean Park (NZ).

Night Of Thunder (Ire) | Standing at Darley Europe

Kukeracha is by the English 2000 Guineas winner Night Of Thunder (Ire), who shuttled to Darley Australia in 2016.

Night Of Thunder has sired 115 winners from 179 runners worldwide, with 20 at stakes level. Kukeracha became the first at Group 1 level, and he is his fifth stakes winner in Australia overall – joining Cherry Tortoni, A Beautiful Night, River Night and Hela.

Local triumph in Kingsford-Smith Cup

5 min read
While the Freedmans and Chris Waller stole the show in the BRC Sires’ Produce S. and Queensland Derby respectively at Eagle Farm on Saturday, the locals got their own back later in the afternoon with a Tony Gollan tour de force in the G1 TAB Kingsford-Smith Cup.

Vega One (Lope De Vega {Ire}) marked a triumphant comeback from serious injury with a barnstorming finish from near-last, snatching the lead in the shadows of the post to win by 0.5l. His stablemate Jonker (Spirit Of Boom), who had led all the way, held on for a gritty second.

“Mate, that’s so good,” Gollan said. “I didn’t know where to look late in the race. I thought Jonker might be going to hang on, while I caught sight of him (Vega One) behind a bit of a wall of horses. But then, all of a sudden, off he went.

“It’s unreal – to run one-two here, in a Group 1 race on my home track, is just fantastic.”

“It’s unreal – to run one-two here, in a Group 1 race on my home track, is just fantastic.” - Tony Gollan

It was the sixth win of a 25-start career for Vega One, who was a $75,000 purchase by John Thompson Racing at the 2017 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale.

The 5-year-old has now earned just under $1.5 million in stakes, with Saturday’s Group 1 triumph sitting alongside an earlier victory in the Listed Queensland Day S. in 2019, plus placings in the G2 Victory S. and the Listed Mick Dittman Plate, Recognition S. and Magic Millions Cup.

Vega One also finished a close fourth in last year’s G1 Stradbroke H., beaten by only 0.5l by the winner Tyzone (Written Tycoon).

But the talented sprinter’s career hasn’t always been plain sailing for Gollan. The Eagle Farm trainer took special satisfaction from Saturday’s win, which came at Vega One’s fourth start back from an injury lay-off.

The gelding had resumed with a sixth in the Listed Ascot H. on April 17, then ran second in the Victory S. and a close last-start fourth in the G1 Doomben 10,000.

“I’m just so proud of this horse, who had a major injury after he ran in the Stradbroke last year,” Gollan said.

"I’m just so proud of this horse (Vega One), who had a major injury after he ran in the Stradbroke last year." - Tony Gollan

“He was away for a long time. They did a great job of rehabbing him down there in Victoria, and when he came back into the stable earlier this year, this race and the Stradbroke were the long-range missions. So this just doesn’t get any better. It’s just a great feeling.

“We’ve had a bit of a torrid time with him this preparation, having a few little niggles and trying to get him ready. We were on a knife edge as to whether we were even going to be here this week, with the little things that kept going wrong. But I was really happy with him after his work on Tuesday morning.

“This result today is just so rewarding.”

Saturday’s Kingsford-Smith Cup is the latest in a long line of major Australian sprints won by the progeny of former shuttle stallion Lope De Vega (Ire), who stood in Australia between 2011 and 2014.

Santa Ana Lane won the G1 TJ Smith S., Stradbroke H., The Goodwood H., VRC Sprint Classic and Sir Rupert Clarke S. in an outstanding sprinting career. Vega Magic captured the G1 The Goodwood H. and Memsie S., while Gytrash has so far collected a victory in the G1 Lightning S. alongside placings such as the G1 William Reid S., Newmarket H., The Goodwood H. and The Everest.

Lope De Vega's first son to stand in Australia will be Yulong's Lucky Vega (Ire), who is joining the roster of the Victorian farm for the season.

Vega One is one of two stakes winners out of the imported American mare One Funny Honey (USA) (Distorted Humor {USA}). His older half-sister One More Honey (Onemorenomore) won the G2 Sweet Embrace S. and also finished fourth in the G1 Flight S.

Kah’s starring role

Gollan paid tribute to star jockey Jamie Kah, who won the Kingsford-Smith Cup as part of a cameo carnival appearance.

Kah is the runaway premiership leader in Melbourne and is booked to return there on Sunday. With Queensland’s borders currently closed to Victoria due to this week’s COVID-19 outbreak and lockdown, she is unlikely to be seen in Brisbane again for the remainder of the winter carnival.

Kah played her role to perfection on Vega One on Saturday, waiting patiently at the rear of the field before unleashing a perfectly timed finish in the straight.

“Jamie doesn’t ride up here that often, but, jeez, I hope she comes back a bit more often in future,” Gollan said. “They got it right with her in Victoria, that’s for sure.

“She’s done a great job. There were no instructions for her today – we just got her to do whatever she wanted on him.”

Vega One was the only winner on Saturday for Kah, who also finished second aboard Ayrton (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}) in the G3 Fred Best Classic, second on Carif (So You Think {NZ}) in the G3 Premier’s Cup, fifth aboard Horrifying (NZ) (Shocking) in the G1 Queensland Derby and fourth with Lyre (Lonhro) in the Listed Helen Coughlan S.

Sires’ triumph for Tiger Of Malay

5 min read
A blockbuster performance by Tiger Of Malay (Extreme Choice) in Saturday’s G2 James Squire BRC Sires’ Produce S. at Eagle Farm added another million-dollar moment to a remarkable run for his sire, his trainers and his owners.

Cover image courtesy of Michael McInally

The colt joined a stellar 2021 roll of honour for trainers Richard and Michael Freedman, who had previously captured the G1 Golden Slipper with another member of Extreme Choice’s first crop, Stay Inside, and who also won the G1 Surround S. with Forbidden Love (All Too Hard).

“It’s been an amazing year,” Michael Freedman said on Saturday afternoon. “If you’d told me in January that we were going to win three big races, two of them with 2-year-olds, I would have told you that you were mad. But we have a big crew of staff who all do a terrific job.

"If you’d told me in January that we were going to win three big races, two of them with 2-year-olds, I would have told you that you were mad." - Michael Freedman

“I think it’s been at least 15 years since I’ve been up here, so it’s a big thrill to come back and win this race today.”

Tiger Of Malay became the third stakes winner from just a handful of first-crop runners by Extreme Choice, propelling his progeny’s earnings past $3 million and leapfrogging his high-flying fellow Newgate Farm rookie stallion Capitalist to regain the lead in a tight race for first-season sire honours.

It also added to an incredible season for Tiger Of Malay’s ownership group, comprised of the likes of Newgate, the China Horse Club, SF Bloodstock, Go Bloodstock, Horse Ventures, Starlight Racing, Glenlogan Park, Highgrove Stud, Nick Vass Bloodstock, Aston Bloodstock, Grant Bloodstock Pty Ltd, Carpe Diem and G1G Racing & Breeding.

A near-identical partnership captured the G1 Champagne S. at Randwick last month with Captivant (Capitalist), as well as the $1 million Arrowfield 3YO Sprint with Wild Ruler (Snitzel), while several members of the group also share in the ownership of the Slipper hero Stay Inside.

Tiger Of Malay’s heroics on Saturday completed back-to-back BRC Sires’ Produce S. victories for the group, who shared ownership of the 2019 winner Strasbourg (I Am Invincible). The race was not run last year because of COVID-19.

“They’re a great group of people to train for,” Freedman said. “After this horse’s last start in Sydney, we all sat down and thought, ‘Well, where do we go here?’ And we thought Brisbane was a nice option.”

A reversal of fortunes

Tiger Of Malay was a $255,000 purchase by China Horse Club and Newgate from Tyreel Stud’s draft at the 2020 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, and he began his career on a perfect note with a powerful debut victory in the Kirkham Plate at Randwick in October.

The Freedmans have endured a frustrating time with him since then, finishing fifth on wet ground in the G2 Silver Slipper, a troubled second in the G3 Pago Pago S., and a last-start seventh on another rain-affected track in the G1 Sires’ Produce S.

It was a different story on Saturday as jockey Craig Williams – replacing Mark Zahra, who was stranded in Melbourne because of this week’s COVID-19 outbreak and lockdown – settled in a midfield position before creeping forward coming up to the home turn.

Williams brought Tiger Of Malay out into clear air at the top of the straight and let him rip, and he bounded to the lead with 200 metres to run.

Converge (Frankel {GB}) and Port Louis (Maurice {Jpn}) unleashed flying finishes from the back and got close, but Tiger Of Malay held them out in an exceptional win.

The chestnut colt has now had six starts for two wins and a placing, earning $736,250 in stakes.

Tiger Of Malay as a yearling

It was a hugely satisfying result for Freedman, whose last taste of BRC Sires’ Produce S. success came with the great Mahogany (Last Tycoon {Ire}) back in 1993.

“We’ve always had a very good opinion of this horse, but he just hasn’t had a great deal of luck with barriers and tracks and things like that,” Freedman said. “The last decent track he raced on was the Pago Pago, where he was arguably a bit unlucky.

“We’ve always had a very good opinion of this horse (Tiger Of Malay), but he just hasn’t had a great deal of luck with barriers and tracks and things like that." - Michael Freedman

“We had to regroup after the Sires’ in Sydney, where he drew wide and over-raced a bit with blinkers on, and he dropped out to finish near the back.

“But I came here today thinking that, if he got the right run, he could run a super race.”

Rookie Sires’ incredible start rolls on

Tiger Of Malay’s BRC Sires’ Produce S. victory has added to the astonishing dominance of Australia’s first-season sire landscape this season by Newgate’s new kids on the block.

Extreme Choice and Capitalist have both broken through the $3 million barrier with their progeny’s earnings this season. Arrowfield's Shalaa (Ire) is at $1.85 million in third place.

Blue Diamond winner Extreme Choice produced only 46 foals in his first crop, but 13 of them have raced and five have been winners.

Stay Inside takes top billing with his Golden Slipper triumph, while Tiger Of Malay is now a Group 2 winner and Xtremetime won the Listed Woodlands S. at Rosehill on May 15. Extreme Warrior also picked up a black-type placing in the Listed Debutant S. in Melbourne.

The Tony Gollan-trained gelding was the beneficiary of a Kah pearler, settling down last in running before producing through a narrow gap and letting down with an explosive turn of foot over the finale 75 metres.

Stablemate and runner-up Jonker (Spirit Of Boom) was brave in defeat and almost lead from pillar to post, while the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Signore Fox (Exceed And Excel) nosed out Godolphin galloper Trekking (Street Cry {Ire}) along the inside rail to claim third position.

G2 James Squire BRC Sires’ Produce S., $1,000,000, 1400m

Race summary

Tiger Of Malay held off a fast-finishing Converge (Frankel {GB}) to gift his sire Extreme Choice another first season Group winner at stud.

The Richard and Michael Freedman-trained colt was the beneficiary of a lovely ride by star hoop Craig Williams settling just in behind the speed with cover.

From there Williams was forced to present in a five-wide position. However, his mount's match fitness came to the fore when asked to let down at the top of the straight.

He then proceeded to kick clear of his rivals before fending off a low-flying Converge who was forced off heels at the 200-metre mark.

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Port Louis (Maurice {Jpn}) loomed as a key danger to Tiger Of Malay at the 150-metre mark but ultimately peaked on his run with 100 metres to run to finish ahead over Overpass (Vancouver) who flashed up the inside rail.

Pedigree notes

A $255,000 2020 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale purchase by China Horse Club and Newgate Bloodstock via the draft of Tyreel Stud, Tiger Of Malay is out of 1200-metre winner Sambar (More Than Ready {USA}), thus making him a half-brother to WA Group 3 winners Samovare (Savabeel) and Samizdat (Not A Single Doubt).

Race summary

Apache Chase (Better Than Ready) knocked off boom gelding Ayrton (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}) here to cement his status in next month’s G1 Stradbroke H.

The Desleigh Forster-trained galloper went straight to the front and dictated proceedings under Jim Byrne after breaking clean into stride from barrier three.

On straightening Ayrton looked to have the race at his mercy but had to settle for second ahead of a hard-finishing Amish Boy (Star Witness) and Palladas (I Am Invincible).

Pedigree notes

Bred by Eureka Thoroughbreds, Apache Chase was a $50,000 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Yearling Sale purchase by Michael Sherrin.

The Godolphin mare settled four wide without cover over the trip and still proved the strongest over the concluding stages, letting down with a rapid turn of foot to run straight past her rivals over the final 75 metres.

Sweet Deal (Casino Prince) produced one of the runs of the day to flash home into second after spotting the lead more than 10l and being forced the widest of all runners on straightening.

The Joseph Pride-trained Threeood (Star Witness) squeezed through a narrow gap in the straight to claim third on return ahead of a sound Lyre (Lonhro).

Race summary

Atullibigeal (Street Boss {USA}) romped in by 3l under Andrew Calder.

The Carl Henderson-trained galloper settled down in a lovely midfield position with cover prior to trucking up into the straight and powering away from eventual runner-up Lady Maroal (NZ) (Power {GB}) when asked for the ultimate effort entering the final furlong.

The Tony Pike-trained There You Go (NZ) (Niagara) was held up in the straight but worked home nicely over the concluding stages to finish a distant third to hold out a hard closing Mustang Valley (NZ) (Vanburgh).

Pedigree notes

Atullibigeal was a $40,000 2019 Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale purchase by B Kwok via the draft of Swettenham Stud.

He was ultimately passed in at the 2020 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale after failing to meet his reserve of NZ$80,000.

Southern Hemisphere Siyouni

Perennial French Champion sire and current third in the European standings, Siyouni (Fr) will be made available at the Haras de Bonneval during the second semester of 2021, to cover mares on a Southern Hemisphere schedule at a fee of €100,000 (AU$158,111).

Siyouni has made a promising debut at stud with from only six Southern Hemisphere runners to date, he counts four black-type performers, including the Listed-winning juvenile See You In Spring.

His progeny have proved popular in the sales ring here in Australia, with his yearlings selling for up to $550,000.

Four mares killed

Four broodmares were tragically killed in a truck crash in the Hunter Valley in New South Wales just before 6.30am Saturday morning.

NSW Police confirmed the deaths of the mares, who were purchased at the recent Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale.

Police said two men aged 62 and 59 were being treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries following the crash near Jerry’s Plains.

The mares were believed to be in transit to one of the major studs situated in the region.

Hawkes stable locked down

The Hawkes Racing stables at Flemington was placed into lockdown on Saturday morning by Racing Victoria due to COVID-19 protocols.

Hawkes Racing posted a tweet early Saturday morning to confirm it had scratched 2-year-old Tonneofgrit (Winning Rupert) from the opening event at Caulfield, after being informed that a staff member was deemed a close contact of a COVID case and happened to be awaiting test results.

Group 1 touted for Exhilarates

After a win in the Listed Magic Millions Helen Coughlan S. for Exhilarates (Snitzel) at Eagle Farm, Godolphin have indicated she may be given the opportunity to tackle a Group 1 assignment.

"This will be her last preparation before she goes to stud," said trainer James Cummings. "That might just entice us to think about the Winter S. or perhaps even the Stradbroke."

The win was another feather in the cap for the R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner, who was purchased by Godolphin for $600,000.

She defeated the fast-finishing Sweet Deal (Casino Prince) who was recently sold for $850,000 to Lustre Lodge.

Kah rewrites records

Victorian Jockey’s Premiership leader Jamie Kah broke the record for the most Group 1 wins by a female rider in Australian history. Saluting aboard the Tony Gollan-trained Vega One (Lope De Vega {Ire}) in the G1 Kingsford-Smith Cup at Eagle Farm on Saturday, Kah recorded her sixth Group 1 victory.

“This year has been unbelievable for me, I have been trying to stay in Melbourne as much as possible, but this was a great opportunity,” Kah told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

Jamie Kah

Ayrton beaten

Boom gelding Ayrton (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}) suffered his first defeat on Saturday in the G3 Fred Best Classic at Eagle Farm.

The highly touted Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained galloper was a leading contender for next month’s G1 Stradbroke H. but will now miss the field after being narrowly denied by the Desleigh Forster-trained Apache Chase (Better Than Ready).

"He (Ayrton) was a bit disappointing today let off the bit, he wasn't as professional as he's been, but I'm still happy with him," jockey Jamie Kah told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

Park Avenue strong again

Fastnet Rock 2-year-old Park Avenue made it two for two with a fast-finishing win at Randwick on Saturday.

He made his run down the centre of the track, keeping up a strong gallop to defeat the filly Winning Verse (Winning Rupert) by a half-head. Favourite Sacred Field (Deep Field) finished third at his career debut.

The Michael and Richard Freedman-trained colt made a successful career debut at Wyong earlier this month. He was a $220,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase by his trainers out of the Segenhoe Stud draft.

Boss banned

Star hoop Glen Boss is set to launch an internal review so he is free to ride gelding The Harrovian (Fastnet Rock) in next month’s G1 Stradbroke H. at Eagle Farm.

Boss received an eight-day careless riding ban, which will start after G1 Queensland Oaks day next Saturday, after causing interference on pick-up ride Love Struck (Love Conquers All) in Race 2 at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Boss has deferred his ban to start after next Saturday and, as it stands, he will miss Stradbroke Day on June 12.

Glen Boss

Riot rolls in

Leading hoop Damien Oliver believes that impressive Caulfield winner Riot And Rose (NZ) (Pins) has a “bright future” ahead of him after romping in by 2.3l on Saturday.

Oliver said the undefeated 3-year-old is still quite immature and will improve with more racing under his belt.

"I think Moods (Peter Moody, trainer) is going to have a nice horse on his hands. He’s a really nice horse, he was on and off the bit at different times, but he joined in nicely and then when he got to the front, he pricked the ears and had a bit of a wait," Oliver told Racing.com.

Medag on top at Arqana

In a close replay of last year, Arqana upped sticks and moved to Goffs UK in Doncaster, and once again provided the most expensive breezer of the European season, in Lot 90, the son of Darley America stallion Medaglia D'Oro (USA), who brought the day's high price of £675,000 (AU$1,242,095) purchased by Godolphin.

Blandford Bloodstock purchased a Ribchester (Ire) filly, Lot 147, for £590,000 (AU$1,085,683). “I'm a massive fan of Ribchester–there's a huge word about him. This was more than I thought I would have to give but time will tell if we're right or not. I can't say who her new owner is but they agreed with me,” said Blandford’s Richard Brown.

As the Sale was held in England, trade was conducted in sterling, but the figures have already been converted to euros on the Arqana website which shows, incredibly, that in the midst of a lengthy world health crisis Arqana has set new records for both aggregate (€15,219,820/£13,052,500) and median (€98,600/£85,000). The clearance rate settled at 88.6 per cent for 109 horses sold from 123 offered at an average price of (€139,631/£119,748).

Reflecting on the day's action, Arqana's executive director Freddy Powell said, “It shows that the catalogue was so strong, that it has been appreciated worldwide. We've had people bidding from all over.”

Looking Ahead - May 30

4 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we will aim to give you something to follow.

A trio of runners at Ballarat and Gunnedah appear to have the credentials to be worth following in their respective assignments on Sunday, as well as in future starts in the weeks and months ahead.

Ballarat, Race 2, 12.55pm AEST, The Haymarket 3YO Fillies' Mdn Plate, $35,000, 1100m

A breakthrough looks close for the Godolphin filly Mashrabiya (Teofilo {Ire}), who will be ridden by Ben Allen on Sunday for trainer James Cummings.

The chestnut filly has finished second in all of her three previous starts – at Wyong and Newcastle last September, and then at Kembla Grange in January. She has also shown bright promise in her trials, winning at Hawkesbury in August along with two placings at the same venue.

Teofilo (Ire), sire of Mashrabiya | Standing at Darley Europe

Mashrabiya is by the influential Teofilo (Ire), sire of 98 stakes winners worldwide including the likes of Melbourne Cup hero Cross Counter (GB) and star Australian performers Happy Clapper, Humidor (NZ) and Kermadec (NZ).

The dam of Mashrabiya is Screen (Lonhro), whose seven wins included the G3 Golden Pendant in Sydney. She also placed in the Listed Darley Crown at Hawkesbury, and she is the dam of three winners including two black-type performers.

Mashrabiya’s half-brother Inquiry (Exceed And Excel) is a 10-race winner including the Listed Spear Chief H., while Cloak (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}) has won seven races and placed in the G3 Newcastle Spring S.

Gunnedah, Race 3, 1.25pm AEST, TKM Engineering Pty Ltd Showcase Mdn Plate, $30,000, 1400m

This race features the promising and well-related 3-year-old Metal Bar (No Nay Never {USA}), who was bought for $400,000 from Coolmore Stud’s draft at the 2019 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Metal Bar is a half-brother to two stakes performers – Mighty Boss (Not A Single Doubt), who won the 2017 Caulfield Guineas, as well as the multiple Listed placegetter Shiralee (Stratum).

The grandam of Metal Bar is La Volta (Laranto), who won the G1 Australasian Oaks and is also the grandam of Group 2 winners Catch A Fire (Sebring) and Seaburge (Sebring).

Metal Bar as a yearling

Metal Bar is by No Nay Never (USA), who has quickly made a massive impact at stud and commands a service fee of €125,000 (AU$197,639) at Coolmore Stud in Ireland this year. He has already sired 28 stakes winners worldwide, including the multiple New Zealand stakes winner Need I Say More, plus G1 July Cup winner and exciting shuttle stallion prospect Ten Sovereigns (Ire).

Metal Bar began his career with Archie Alexander, for whom he finished eighth on debut on April 1 before a vastly improved performance for a close fourth at Echuca two weeks later.

The gelding is now trained by Jeremy Sylvester and will be ridden by Luke Rolls.

Ballarat, Race 4, 2.05pm AEST, Global Turf F&M BM64 H., $35,000, 1400m

Talented mare Lady In The Sky (NZ) (Savabeel) resumes here for trainer Michael Moroney, with apprentice jockey Tayla Childs claiming 3kgs to reduce her weight to 58kgs.

The 4-year-old has had 10 starts to date for two wins, a second and four thirds, and she found a rich vein of form last spring and early summer – winning at Pakenham on October 16, followed by a second at Ballarat, third at Sandown, a win at Sandown in early December, and a third at Caulfield on January 2.

Lady In The Sky (NZ) as a yearling

She may find the 1400 metres short of her best distance on Sunday, but is capable of running a bold race in a fresh state and is likely to come into her own over the next couple of months.

Lady In The Sky was bought for NZ$230,000 by Paul Moroney Bloodstock from White Robe Lodge at the 2018 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale.

She is by New Zealand’s six-time Champion sire Savabeel, and her dam Include (NZ) (Gallant Guru) won 10 races including the Listed Dunedin Guineas and Southland Guineas. Lady In The Sky is her only named foal.
