Tough Tofane bounces back to collect another Group 1 crown

4 min read
The fighting qualities of Tofane (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}) both on and off the track were evident when she doubled her tally at the highest level with victory in the G1 TAB Stradbroke H., Queensland racing’s most cherished prize.

The Michael Moroney-trained Tofane overcame adversity to add the Stradbroke to her Group 1 record following her triumph in last season’s All Aged S.

Moroney told TDN AusNZ that the 5-year-old had challenges after her All Aged win, but her run for second in the G3 BTC Sprint under 60kg – in which she conceded the winner Emerald Kingdom (Bryanbbo’s Gift {NZ}) 4.5kg – had him convinced she was ready for the Stradbroke.

“I was pretty confident she was back to her best and I thought her best run, other than the All Aged, was at her last start. It would have been a weight-carrying record for a mare had she won it,” he said.

“She probably would have won if she had been able to take the short cuts, but she was shoved off the track so I knew she was back.”

Following her success in the All Aged S., Tofane was set for The Everest, but didn’t pull up well after finishing ninth and was subsequently entered in the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

“The only reason she was in the Sale was that she had a couple of setbacks. After she disappointed in The Everest, Tommy Berry said that she pulled up making a noise,” Moroney said.

“The only reason she (Tofane) was in the Sale was that she had a couple of setbacks.” – Michael Moroney

“We had her scoped and she displaced the soft palate so we had to do a little operation with laser treatment.”

The surgery was successful, but Tofane was then struck down by another health problem.

“We got her through that and she then got really crook and was at Werribee for a week. She got a bad kidney infection,” Moroney said.

“For those reasons, she was behind the eight ball so we threw her in the Sale and I agreed with the owners to do that. I said give me one run with her, which was her previous start and she was back.

“Our vets did a great job with her to get her back and all of the staff, it’s been a great team effort from everyone at the stable.”

Tofane settled back midfield in the Stradbroke before rider Craig Williams inched closer near the turn and she got the better of the Tony Gollan-trained favourite Vega One (Lope De Vega {Ire}) in the final 150 metres to score by 0.5l and dent the hopes of a local victory.

Tiara on cards

Moroney hasn’t ruled out another Queensland outing for Tofane in the G1 Tatt’s Tiara before a break.

“We’ll see how she is and there is a chance she will run up there again in the Tiara. That may be her last run, she’ll either go there or to the paddock,” he said.

"We’ll see how she (Tofane) is and there is a chance she will run up there again in the Tiara." - Michael Moroney

Bred by Curraghmore’s Gordon Cunningham, Tofane is out of Baggy Green (Galileo {Ire}) who is a half-sister to the Group 1 winners Funstar (Adelaide {Ire}) and Youngstar (High Chaparral {Ire}).

Tofane was given her early education at the Matamata arm of Moroney’s operation under the guidance of Pam Gerard and she was subsequently purchased by the trainer and a syndicate of stable clients, including major owners Rupert Legh and Neil Werrett.

Likewise, Baggy Green was bought privately off Cunningham by Kevin Hickman’s Valachi Downs and last year produced a sister to Tofane.

Ripper of a mare

Fourth home was Mr Quickie (Shamus Award), who was bred by part-owner Rosemount Stud and its colours were carried to victory a race later by Brooklyn Hustle (Starspangledbanner) in the G2 Magic Millions Dane Ripper S.

The Jason Warren and Dean Krongold-trained mare roared home wide out on the track in the hands of Williams to give him a back-to-back Group double.

“That was exhilarating. We know she is a high-class mare and Starspangledbanner can throw that speed into them. She’ll go to the Tiara now and we’re very excited about that,” Rosemont’s Anthony Mithen said.

“She’s had no luck with barrier draws, but we’ve stuck together and it’s been a great team effort.”

Converge completes feature race double for Tulloch Lodge

4 min read
A memorable day at Eagle Farm for trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott was crowned by Converge (Frankel {GB}), who produced a commanding performance to run away with the G1 Treasury Brisbane JJ Atkins and have connections dreaming of what riches the spring may bring.

Cover image courtesy of Michael McInally

The Waterhouse and Bott-prepared Converge followed the winning lead of stablemate Knights Order (Ire) (So You Think {NZ}), who had earlier run his rivals ragged to win the G2 Brisbane Cup, to steamroll his Atkins opposition.

Sharing in the glory was jockey Tom Clark who guided the fortunes of the stablemates so expertly.

The well-related Converge delivered an 11th Group 1 title for his Tulloch Lodge trainers with an effort on Saturday that left no excuses for the beaten brigade.

Adding to the celebrations was the fact that Converge was bred by Evergreen Rich, which is managed by Bott’s father Tony.

“It was fantastic to watch and obviously we came here hoping to see a performance like that. It was such a great run from him in the Sires' and we thought it was just a matter of holding him together and keeping him up to the mark for just one more run,” Adrian Bott said.

“It was fantastic to watch and obviously we came here hoping to see a performance like that.” – Adrian Bott

Converge had proven himself at 1600 metres in April when he was victorious in the Listed Fernhill at Randwick and returned there next time out to finish third in the G1 Champagne S.

He was then freshened and off a trial came from a mile back, off a horror gate, to run second in the G2 BRC Sires’ Produce S.

“The draw was key and we got all the favours in the run throughout. He has showed great improvement every time he has stepped out and is such a genuine horse. He’s not the biggest horse in the stable by any means, but he’s got the biggest heart,” Bott said.

Converge kept the leaders within sight when he settled one off the fence before he strode to the front 300 metres from home for Clark and from there it was game, set and match.

“He is one of the most honest horses we’ve got and he’s got an explosive turn of foot to go with it,” Bott said.

“He (Converge) is one of the most honest horses we’ve got and he’s got an explosive turn of foot to go with it.” – Adrian Bott

Converge is a son of the Shamardal (USA) mare Conversely (Ire) and she is a daughter of the G3 Belmont Sands Point S. winner Melhor Ainda (USA) (Pulpit {USA}).

It is a family rich in black type and includes the Champion Argentinian filly and Group 1 winner Potrizaris (Arg) (Porillazo {Arg}), who produced the Japanese Group 3 winner Dia De La Novia (Jpn) (Sunday Silence {USA}).

She was a treasured broodmare and is the dam of stakes winners Dreadnoughtus (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}) and his brother San Martin (Jpn) and Dia De La Madre (Jpn) (King Kamehamea {Jpn}), and her brother Dia Del Rey (Jpn).

While Converge boasts a colourful and successful background, he won’t be an influence in the years to come as he is a gelding.

“We made that decision early and I honestly believe that has been the making of the horse. The owners love their racing and have been fantastic supporters of mine and given me these opportunities,” Bott said.

“I am able to stand here with Gai in partnership and am glad to reward them with a big Group 1 victory.”

Future looking good

Converge’s pedigree boasts both quality sprinting and staying influences, which bodes well for next season.

“We can go home and dream what could be possible for his 3-year-old career. The way he settles in his races, he has the scope to improve further and that certainly opens up a lot more options going forward,” Bott said.

“If he continues to develop physically and improves we certainly have got a lot to look forward to.”

Converge raced to Atkins glory by 3.75l from Giannis (Flying Artie) with the Sires’ Produce S. winner Tiger Of Malay (Extreme Choice) third ahead of the sole filly Invisible Tears (Maurice {Jpn}), who got home powerfully from last.

Star galloper Zaaki turns in another powerhouse display

4 min read
The rise to prominence of Zaaki (GB) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}) has been short and swift and the quality of his Queensland performances strongly point to him being a star of the Melbourne spring carnival.

Cover image courtesy of Michael McInally

The Annabel Neasham-trained Zaaki put 7l on his rivals in the G1 Doomben Cup to earn favouritism for the G1 Cox Plate and he was again in a class of his own in Saturday’s G2 Sky Racing Q22, formerly the PJ O’Shea S., at Eagle Farm.

Zaaki has now won three of his five runs since relocating to Neasham’s yard from Sir Michael Stoute’s stable. He landed in Australia as a dual Group 3 winner and has rapidly risen to a new level.

He was sixth in the G1 Doncaster H. to open his Southern Hemisphere career and, following a runner-up finish in the G3 Japan Racing Association Plate, has reeled off effortless wins in the G2 Hollindale S., the Doomben Cup and now the Q22.

Zaaki sat in second or third spot under James McDonald and took control of the race 300 metres from home.

“He just did what he had to do and I’m so lucky to have a horse like this so early on. I have loved him from day one and from then he’s looked like he was always going to be a star,” Neasham said.

“You don’t run them first-up in a Doncaster unless you have a big opinion. I just wish the Cox Plate was in two weeks.”

“You don’t run them first-up in a Doncaster unless you have a big opinion. I just wish the Cox Plate was in two weeks.” – Annabel Neasham

Neasham and McDonald didn’t go into the Q22 with any hard and fast plan and let Zaaki do his own thing.

“We had a word and said we won’t over complicate it and just ride him second or third and take it up if no-one else wanted to,” Neasham said.

“It is important with the horse to use his high cruising speed. He was going up a bit in trip and this (2200 metres) is the furthest he’s gone.

“They went at a good clip in the Doomben Cup and he was still very easy on the line so I didn’t think it would pose any problems.”

Effortless performance

Zaaki travelled boldly near the pace on Saturday and it was just a matter of when McDonald was going to ask a serious question of the horse. When he did, the response was impressive and they zipped clear to score by yet another wide margin.

“I could see James grinning over the line, there was never really any doubt about it,” Neasham said.

"I could see James (McDonald) grinning over the line, there was never really any doubt about it." - Annabel Neasham

“The horse is in such good order and he likes it on top of the ground. The big galloping track really suits him and if we weren’t happy with him he wouldn’t have been here.

“It’s been nice to have three weeks between runs. He didn’t need much freshening up, he’s a naturally enthusiastic horse and it's great to see from a 6-year-old.”

Homesman (USA) (War Front {USA}) covered extra ground near the pace and he stuck on resolutely for second ahead of Paths Of Glory (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), who came on well from the back and Brandenburg (NZ) (Burgundy {NZ}) was next to cross the line.

Zaaki was purchased for 150,000 gns (AU$285,825) at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale by Blandford Bloodstock’s Stuart Boman on behalf of Neasham and her stable clients.

He is a son of Kesara (GB) (Sadler’s Wells {USA}) and she is a half-sister to Persona Grata (GB) (Sir Percy (GB}), a dual Listed winner in France, and their dam is a half-sister to the two-time Group 1 winner Altieri (GB) (Selkirk {GB}).

Smart youngsters draw attention to future prospects

Written by Paul Vettise

Promising colts Verne (Snitzel) and Ranveer (Winning Rupert) showed they may well be forces to be reckoned with in spring 3-year-old features with strong efforts on Saturday to post juvenile successes at Randwick and Sandown respectively.

Pedigree was to the fore at Randwick where the well-related colt Verne continued his winning form with a tenacious performance to avenge a debut defeat.

The Annabel Neasham-trained youngster was beaten by In The Congo (Snitzel) in his first appearance and got his own back on Saturday when he got the better of the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-prepared youngster in Saturday’s Fujitsu General H.

At Sandown, Ranveer made an overdue return for trainer Matt Laurie and showed his quality to overcome a Heavy 9 track and claim top honours in the Clanbrooke Racing H.

Verne had also triumphed at his previous start on his home track at Warwick Farm and Neasham’s Assistant Trainer Todd Pollard confirmed a spell was now in order.

“He isn’t the finished product yet and when you look at him he’s still quite a raw colt. It will be exciting to see what he can do in the future,” he said.

“He (Verne) isn’t the finished product yet and when you look at him he’s still quite a raw colt.” – Todd Pollard

“We’ll give him a break and then bring him back and hopefully he will be as good as we want him to be and there are some nice races in the spring for him.”

Verne was sold by breeder Highgrove Stud at the Australian Easter Yearling Sale Round 2 for $300,000 to Aquis Farm and is now raced by a syndicate that includes Noorilim and Phoenix Thoroughbreds.

A brother to the G2 Australia S. winner and Group 1 placegetter Thronum, Verne is out of Canadian winner Helena’s Secret (USA) (Five Star Day {USA}).

It is a hot pedigree as Helena’s Secret is a half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner and Champion Sire Street Cry (Ire) and the dam of another top-flight winner and influential stallion in Shamardal (USA). It is also the family of the Darley resident and G1 Prix Jean Prat winner Territories (Ire).

Verne raced close to the speed for rider Brodie Loy set up by In The Congo and the two youngsters went at it hammer and tongs over the closing 200 metres.

“It was an enthralling battle and well done to Brodie, who works hard to get these opportunities and he nailed it,” Pollard said.

Ranveer shows class

Ranveer is another highly regarded colt, who overcame an unsuitably wet track at Sandown in his first appearance since finishing runner-up in his December debut at Flemington where he was beaten by subsequent R. Listed Inglis Millennium winner Profiteer (Capitalist).

“My early plan was to trial him and race at Ballarat before taking him up to the Magic Millions, but it didn’t work out and we had to back off,” Laurie said. “He’s a horse I’ve always had a high opinion of.”

Ranveer, who was a touch fractious in the gates, travelled in second spot before dashing clear halfway down the straight and had enough in reserve to down debutante Our Heidi (Needs Further) by 0.75l.

“He can be a pain in the bum in the gates and a bit frustrating, but hopefully with this run under his belt he can move forward,” Laurie said.

“I was a bit worried and felt he may not have done enough work for this type of surface and hoped his class would get him through. To my eye, he looked to be running on empty.

“There’s an 1100 metre race at Caulfield in a fortnight and then we’ll back off and get him ready for specific races in the spring.”

Ranveer was bred by Einoncliff and bought for $200,000 by Laurie out of the Western Breeders Alliance draft at the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale.

He is a son of Bitter Twist (California Dane), who is a sister to the Listed Fairetha S. winner Hoegaarden (Flying Spur) and their dam is a sister to the eight-time Group 1 winner Intergaze (Integra).

G1 TAB Stradbroke H., $1,500,000, 1400m

Race summary

Connections were rewarded after opting to withdraw Tofane (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}) from the recent Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale here, as the Mike Moroney-trained mare was able to fend off high-class challenger Vega One (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and become a dual Group 1 winner.

Ridden by star hoop Craig Williams, the 5-year-old looked to be labouring as the field turned for home. However, her determination shone through and ultimately saw her go head to head with the aforementioned Vega One down the vast majority of the straight. She would prevail by a mere 0.2l.

Rank outsider Signore Fox (Exceed And Excel) proved his last start G1 Kingsford-Smith Cup-placing was no one off and worked home hard late to land third ahead of Mr Quickie (Shamus Award), who ran out of his skin with the top weight of 56.5kgs.

Pedigree notes

Tofane was withdrawn from the 2017 New Zealand Bloodstock Select Yearling Sale and now races in the colours of prominent owner Rupert Legh.

She is the second of six foals out of 1600 metre winner Baggy Green (Galileo {Ire}), who herself is a half-sister to G1 Flight S. winner Funstar (Adelaide {Ire}) and G1 Queensland Oaks winner Youngstar (High Chaparral {Ire}).

Her extended family is also littered with black-type performers, including five-time European Group 1 winner User Friendly (GB) (Slip Anchor {GB}) who reigned supreme in the time-honoured G1 The Oaks and G1 Irish Oaks.

Baggy Green’s most recent progeny to go through the ring is an unraced 2-year-old colt called Benaud (NZ) (Reliable Man {GB}). He was knocked down at the 2020 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale to John O’Shea Racing and Laurel Oak Bloodstock for NZ$280,000. She currently has a weanling filly, who is full sibling to Tofane, on the ground.

Tofane’s sire Ocean Park (NZ) is continuing to cement his status as a producer of top-class racehorses. He is responsible for nine individual stakes winners this season, three of those have prevailed at Group 1 level, including G1 All Aged S. winner Kolding (NZ). He is also the sire of Star Of The Seas (NZ) who himself finished second in two Australian Group 1s this season alone.

Ocean Park will stand this breeding season at Waikato Stud for a service fee of NZ$30,000 + GST.

G1 Treasury Brisbane JJ Atkins S., $1,000,000, 1600m

Race summary

Converge (Frankel {GB}) claimed the final 2-year-old Group 1 of the season in devastating fashion.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained gelding secured an economical midfield run in transit under leading stable hoop Tim Clark.

Clark ensured that luck remained out the equation this time around and worked into clear air before trucking up into the straight under light riding. From there, Converge extended and let down with an explosive turn of foot to salute by a commanding 3.3l margain.

The Chris Waller-trained Giannis (Flying Artie) was most impressive in second after enduring three wide run, while last start BRC Sires’ Produce S. winner Tiger Of Malay (Extreme Choice) was no match for Converge over the extra 200 metres and could only manage third this time around.

Local hope Invinsible Tears (Maurice {Jpn}) rounded out the first four with a huge run down the far outside.

Pedigree notes

Bred and raced by the Adrian Bott-managed Evergreen Rich, Converge is the first of three foals out of Irish-placed mare Conversely (Ire) (Shamardal {USA}), who herself is out of G3 Keeneland Appalachian S. winner and dual Group 1-placed American galloper Melhor Ainda (USA) (Pulpit {USA}).

Her second damline and beyond features a multitude of Japanese and American Group and Listed winners. Conversely’s most recent progeny to pass through the ring is a colt by Churchill (Ire) who was purchased at the 2020 Inglis Sydney Weanling Sale for $28,000 by Raphe Bloodstock.

She has since been served by 2016 G1 Caulfield Guineas winner and Aquis stallion Divine Prophet after throwing a colt by Invader in 2020.

Converge’s sire Frankel (GB) needs no introduction, the undefeated European superstar of the last decade is continuing to build an imposing stud profile and more recently has been making his presence felt in Australia.

He secured his first Australian suffixed Group 1 winner when the Chris Waller-trained Hungry Heart claimed the G1 Vinery Stud S. at Rosehill earlier this year.

G2 Sky Racing Q22, $1,200,000, 2200m

Race summary

Zaaki (GB) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}) exerted his dominance once again en route to winning his third consecutive Queensland winter carnival Group contest.

The Annabel Neasham-trained import scored a dream run in transit, landing one off one back after being pushed along by rider James McDonald in the early stages.

McDonald continued to force the issue and landed in the box seat before cruising into the straight. From there Zaaki towed McDonald up to the 300 metre mark before letting down and holding a substantial margin over eventual runner-up Homesman (USA) (War Front {USA}).

Paths Of Glory (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) savaged the line late to claim third after being forced to present the widest of all runners, while the John Sargent-trained Brandenburg (NZ) (Burgundy {NZ}) stuck on for fourth in his first attempt beyond 2000 metres.

Pedigree notes

Zaaki is the fifth foal out of dual French winner Kesara (GB) (Sadlers Wells {USA}), who herself is a half-sister to Listed winner Persona Grata (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}). She hails from the extended family of dual Italian Group 1 winner Altieri (GB) (Selkirk {USA}). She currently has a weanling by Bobby’s Kitten (USA) on the ground.

Zaaki’s sire Leroidesanimaux (Brz) is responsible for this year's Listed Warrnambool Cup winner Le Don De Vie (GB). He is also the sire of G1 Kentucky Derby and G1 Dubai World Cup winner Animal Kingdom (USA).

G2 Lexus Brisbane Cup, $400,000, 3200m

Race summary

Knights Order (Ire) (So You Think {NZ}) proved the superior stayer here, bolting in under Tim Clark at his first attempt over two miles.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained 6-year-old was taken straight to the front by Clark and rated superbly.

Clark allowed the gelding to bowl along at a genuine tempo and ultimately broke his rivals' hearts who were left flat footed on straightening.

From there the pair skipped away to a commanding triumph and defeat never looked likely. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Carif (So You Think {NZ}) grinded away into a distant second, while Sweet Thomas (Ger) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}) and Rondinella (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}) worked home evenly to round out the first four past the post.

Pedigree notes

A $250,000 gns (AU$498,750) 2018 Tattersalls Autumn Horses-in-Training purchase by McKeever Bloodstock and Gai Waterhouse Racing, Knights Order is the final foal out of British mile winner Lamanka Lass (USA) (Woodman {USA}), who herself is a half-sister to dual European Group 1 winner Far Lane (USA) (Lear Fan {USA}).

Knights Order is a half-brother to G2 Santa Anita Oak Tree Derby winner Dark Islander (Ire) (Singspiel {Ire}) and hails from the extended family of G2 Epsom Diomed S. winner Arod (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}).

Knights Order's sire So You Think (NZ) is building an imposing record at stud of late and has sired 12 individual stakes winners and two individual Group 1 winners in Australia this season alone.

G2 Magic Millions Dane Ripper S., $200,000, 1300m

Race summary

The once enigmatic Brooklyn Hustle (Starspangledbanner) has now strung two Group successes together after surging down the outside under the red hot Craig Williams.

The Jason Warren and Dean Krongold-trained mare was taken back to last in running after stepping away slowly into stride from barrier 13.

Williams maintained his composure and presented towards the outside rail which was the superior going later in the program. He then got to work aboard Brooklyn Hustle and she responded with her explosive turn of foot to wear down her rivals and score late.

Runner-up Odeum (Written Tycoon) was most impressive on resumption. The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained 3-year-old was forced to cover more ground after being posted three-wide. However, she wasn't deterred and battled home bravely to hold out Madam Rogue (Zoustar), who herself produced a fantastic run after settling back and wide.

Fourth placegetter Jen Rules (Redoute’s Choice) was forced back to the inferior inside lanes after being faced with a wall of horses at a vital stage in the straight.

Pedigree notes

Bred by and retained by Rosemont Stud, Brooklyn Hustle is out of American Listed winner Joint Aspiration (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), making her a half-sibling to Listed winner Sopran Ival (Ire) (Ivawood {Ire}).

She is also from the extended family of multiple European Group and Listed winners, including G1 Haydock Sprint Cup winner Red Clubs (GB) (Red Ransom {USA}).

Brooklyn Hustle is her sire Starspangledbanner’s second individual stakes winner this season and fifth individual Group 2 winner in total. He will stand this upcoming breeding season at Rosemont Stud for a service fee of $16,500 (inc GST).

G3 James Squire Gunsynd Classic, $200,000, 1600m

Race summary

Boom gelding Ayrton (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}) proved a class above here. The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained gelding found himself parked behind the speed with cover under James McDonald.

McDonald maintained composure aboard the well-fancied prospect and produced his mount in a three wide position on straightening and from there Ayrton responded and let down accordingly.

The Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained Ellsberg (Spill The Beans) offered the most resistance to Ayrton’s rally and knocked away along the inside rail to score second from rank outsider Mob Buster (Spill The Beans) and the Tony Gollan-trained Glitter Strip (Street Boss {USA}).

Pedigree notes

Ayrton was passed in at the 2019 New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Book 2 Yearling Sale after failing to meet a reserve of NZ$40,000 set by vendor Leanach Lodge. He is the third and second-last foal out of the unraced Odessa (NZ) (Falkirk {NZ}), who herself is a half-sister to New Zealand Group 3 winner and G1 New Zealand Oaks fourth placegetter Sabbatical (NZ) (Bakharoff {USA}).

She also hails from the second damline of G3 Debutante S. winner Secunda (Acidity).

Ayrton is the second stakes winner on Australian soil this season for his sire Iffraaj (GB). He is responsible for seven individual Group 1 winners along with Coolmore Stud shuttle stallion Wootton Bassett (GB) who himself will stand the upcoming breeding season in Australia for a service fee of $77,000 (inc GST).

Iffraaj retired from Southern Hemsiphere duties for Haunui Stud with his son Ribchester (Ire) replacing his sire last season, he returns for 2021 at a fee of NZ$15,000 + GST.

Listed Jim Beam Black Hinkler H., $150,000, 1200m

Race summary

Superium (Verrazano {USA}) descended from the clouds to run over the top of his rivals and score by 1l here.

The Team Hawkes-trained gelding was forced to settle last in the run after jumping from the far outside, barrier nine, and while the race wasn’t run at breakneck speed the 4-year-old still managed to flash home the hardest.

The John O’Shea-trained Southern Lad (Ocean Park {NZ}) was solid in second after enduring a three wide run in transit, while the resuming Away Game (Snitzel) held onto third after stringing the field out under Kerrin McEvoy.

Former Godolphin galloper Hilo (Lonhro) was superb in his first start for trainer Gillian Heinrich. The 4-year-old loomed up to contest the finish with Superium but ultimately peaked on his run to finish 1.6l further back in fourth.

Pedigree notes

Bred by Superhorse Trust, Superium was passed in for $46,000 at the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale after failing to meet a reserve of $60,000.

He is the most successful progeny of one start maiden Rosie's Halo (Al Maher), who herself is out of G3 Blue Diamond Prelude winner Brief Embrace (Irgun {USA}). She hails from a third damline of proven black-type performers, including G2 TAB S. winner and G1 TJ Smith S. runner-up Osborne Bulls (Street Cry {Ire}) along with G2 Roman Consul S. winner and G1 The Galaxy H. third placegetter Viridine (Poet’s Voice {GB}).

Rosie’s Halo’s most recent progeny to go under the hammer is a filly by Rubick who was knocked down to Star Thoroughbreds and Randwick Bloodstock Agency (FBAA) for $125,000 at this year’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. She is currently in foal to Rubick.

Superium is the second individual Australian stakes winner for his sire Verrazano (USA) who stood at Coolmore Stud before being sold in 2019 to stand in Brazil.

Listed RadioTAB The Wayne Wilson H., $150,000, 1600m

Race summary

Godolphin galloper Ranier (Lonhro) dug deep over the concluding stages to nose out his enigmatic stablemate Kementari (Lonhro).

The pair settled first and second right throughout the run, with Kementari parked to Ranier’s outside in the box seat. On straightening the former presented as the likely winner but couldn’t wear down the latter despite rider Kerrin McEvoy’s best efforts.

Group 1-winning gelding Kings Will Dream (Ire) (Casamento {Ire}) loomed up to secure victory in his final career start but ultimately peaked on his run and knocked up into third to hold out the Chris Waller-trained So You Win (NZ) (So You Think {NZ}) by 0.5l.

Pedigree notes

A Darley hombred, Ranier is the second foal out of G3 Glenlogan Park S. winner Kanzan (Commands), who herself won five career starts in her 2-year-old season up to 1350 metres.

Kanzan herself is by Commands, the sire of recent Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale purchases Melody Belle (NZ) and Bella Vella.

She hails from the second damline of G1 Randwick Guineas winner Inference (So You Think {NZ}), who himself was placed at Group 1 level on a further three occasions.

Kanzan currently has two unraced colts born in 2018 and 2019 respectively by Lonhro on the ground and hasn’t been served since.

Ranier is the fifth individual stakes winner this season for his sire, who is currently positioned 37th overall on the leading sires' prizemoney table. He has sired 61 individual winners and has amassed a total of 91 wins overall this season. Lonhro will stand the upcoming breeding season at Darley Kelvinside for a service fee of $66,000 (inc GST).

Listed Nova 106.9 Oxlade S., $150,000, 1200m

Race summary

Uncommon James (Cable Bay {Ire}) narrowly denied the Kacy Fogden-trained Maotai (Not A Single Doubt) in a thrilling opening race on G1 Stradbroke H. day.

The lightly raced juvenile was given a perfect ride by talented young hoop Ben Thompson, who opted to settle one out one back after breaking evenly into stride.

Thompson allowed Maotai to string the field out at a solid gallop before getting to work aboard his mount at the top of the straight.

From there he continued to peel back the margin and ultimately headed Maotai over the concluding 50 metres.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained King High (Not A Single Doubt) worked home strongly to fill the minors after settling back in the field, while Berdini’s Girl (Odyssey Moon) found the line with intent to finish right alongside King High in fourth.

Pedigree notes

Bred and retained by Lavin Park Racing & Breeding, Uncommon James is the third foal and first to race out of five-time winner and Listed-placed Pickabee (Jet Spur).

Pickabee herself is a full sibling to Listed winner Emmalene and a half-sister to the Listed-placed Churning (Lonhro). She also hails from the extended family of G2 BRC Victory S. winner and G1 Stradbroke H. third placegetter Niccanova (Nicconi).

She currently has a weanling filly on the ground while in foal to Coolmore Stud stallion Yes Yes Yes.

Uncommon James is the first Australian stakes winner for his sire Cable Bay (Ire), who himself has sired another three stakes winners this season in the Northern Hemisphere, headlined by G2 Temple S. winner Liberty Beach (GB).

Race summary

Adelong (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}) continued on her winning ways and notched up a second consecutive victory and first career stakes success here.

The Brad Widdup-trained mare pinged the lids and found herself in the box seat. Jockey Jay Ford then allowed the 5-year-old to roll along under her own steam before levelling up alongside Ballistic Lover (Smart Missile) and from there his mount continued to find the line en route to a 0.4l victory.

Wandabaa (Wandjina) ran another bold race but maintained her status as a non-winner this preparation and could only settle for second despite her best efforts.

Godolphin gelding Viridine (Poet’s Voice {GB}) was strong through the line and finished third while lumping the top weight of 60.5kgs. He finished ahead of rank outsider Countofmontecristo (Echoes Of Heaven).

Pedigree notes

Bred by Emirates Park Stud, Adelong is the second of three foals out of well-bred 1200 metre winner Snowgums (Redoute's Choice), who herself is out of astonishing producer Snowdrift (Fr) (Polish Precedent {USA}).

Snowdrift was a $1.5 million 2005 Inglis Broodmare Sale purchase by Tyreel Stud and is responsible for G1 The Galaxy H. winner Snowland (Snippets) and another six stakes winners including G2 Surround S. winner and G1 Golden Slipper S. third placegetter Portillo (Red Ransom {USA}).

Of Snowdrift’s 14 foals 11 would race and 10 would become winners in their own right. Her best sale result was a colt by Redoute's Choice that made $2.5 million in 2008 for Tyreel Stud when bought by Darley.

Adelong is the first individual stakes winner for her sire Medaglia D’oro (USA) this season. He is responsible for Godolphin gallopers Flit, Micro and Geist, who have all placed at Group level this season. Star Hong Kong sprinter Golden Sixty has flown his flag this season winning four Group 1 races along with another three Group races.

Belmont, G3 Seacorp - Hyperion S., $200,000, 1600m

Race summary

Valour Road (Frost Giant {USA}) added a fourth Group victory to his resume here.

The Simon Miller-trained galloper required an ounce of luck to come out the victor after finding himself pocketed on the rails with less than 150 metres to run. However, rider Brad Rawiller was rewarded for his patience and ultimately found an out with 75 metres to run.

From there his mount let down to surge past runner-up Dance Music (War Chant {USA}) in the shadows of the post.

Money Matters (Canford Cliffs {Ire}) secured a dream run in transit but couldn't find the extra gear required to finish the better of Valour Road and Dance Music. She would finish third ahead of Massimo (Sessions) by the narrowest of margins.

Pedigree notes

Bred by Yarradale Stud, Valour Road was a $60,000 2017 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale buy for Aquanita Racing. He is the first and best-performed foal to date out of 1300 metre winner Melba Avenue (Street Sense {USA}), making him a half-brother to a colt by Exceed And Excel who was purchased by the Hong Kong Jockey Club for $470,000 at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Melba Avenue herself is a half-sister to dual Group 3 winner Raspberries (Lonhro) and G3 Canonbury S. third placegetter Malahat (Exceed And Excel). She also hails from the second damline of G1 Sanglier S. winner and six-time Group 1 placegetter Flavour (Rubiton). G1 Queensland Derby winner Sonntag (Teofilo {Ire}) also features in her second damline.

Valour Road is his sire Frost Giant's (USA) second individual stakes winner and only Group winner. Frost Giant has sired 17 individual winners this season and currently stands at Yarradale Stud. He was priced at a service fee of $11,000 (inc GST) last season.

Ayrton shows true colours

Ayrton (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}) bounced back to his best with a clear-cut victory at Eagle Farm.

He was beaten for the first time when second to Apache Chase (Better Than Ready) in the G3 Fred Best Classic and had no trouble returning to winning ways in the G3 James Squire Gunsynd Classic.

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Ayrton bounced out to sit in the trail and once rider James McDonald got him into the clear he quickly accelerated to down Ellsberg (Spill The Beans), who was caught wide before going to the front.

Price said spring plans for Ayrton are yet to be locked in, but he is keen on a crack at the $7.5 million Golden Eagle for which he heads the betting at $6.

Back-up handled with ease

Knights Order (Ire) (So You Think {NZ}) handled a quick back-up with aplomb to bolt away with the G2 Lexus Brisbane Cup and lead home a quinella for his sire.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained stayer won the Listed Winter Cup over 2400 metres at Rosehill last weekend and he lapped up the 3200 metre trip on Saturday to lead all the way for rider Tim Clark.

Knights Order (Ire) | Image courtesy of Ashlea Brennan

“I think that’s it for us this campaign. We’ll give him a short freshen-up and now we’ll really hone in to see what we can come up with in the spring because I certainly feel he’s a worthy contender and has made that necessary leap," Bott said.

Knight’s Order surged clear into the straight and he held a strong gallop to have 4.75l on So You Think’s (NZ) other son Carif.

Mare continues winning form

Adelong (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}) made it two on the bounce with a strong victory in the Listed Bob Charley AO S. at Randwick.

She had won over the same course and distance at her previous start to have trainer Brad Widdup in a bullish pre-race mood.

“She had trained on really well and that first win was a great confidence booster for her. I might freshen her up now for the early spring,” he said. “It was great to get that stakes win for a valuable mare.”

Super effort

Superium (Verrazano {USA}) broke a run of minor placings with a stirring win in the Listed Jim Beam Black Hinkler H. at Eagle Farm.

The 4-year-old settled at the tail of the field from the outside gate and when rider Craig Williams asked him to go, the chestnut powered down the outside.

“It’s good to get the job done, he has been a bit frustrating. It all panned out perfectly and the track is playing very fair,” co-trainer Wayne Hawkes said.

First Southern Hemisphere stakes success

Uncommon James delivered a first Australian black-type success for former Woodside Park Stud shuttle stallion Cable Bay (Ire) when he finished determinedly at Eagle Farm to double his winning tally.

Cable Bay (Ire) | Standing at Highclere Stud

The Steven O’Dea and Matthew Hoysted-trained colt had finished runner-up on debut before success at the Sunshine Coast and went to another level on Saturday when he landed the Listed Nova 106.9 Oxlade S.

Uncommon James is one of four Southern Hemisphere winners for Cable Bay, whose flagship performer to date is the G2 Haydock Temple S. winner Liberty Beach (GB).

Satono off the mark

Rich Hill Stud’s Satono Aladdin (Jpn) only raceday representative to date has opened the shuttle stallion’s winning account in Japan.

Omiwatari (Jpn) finished third on debut last month and showed significant improvement to triumph on Friday over 1100 metres.

A Group 1-winning son of the legendary Deep Impact (Jpn), Satono Aladdin will return to Rich Hill in 2021 after missing last season due to COVID-19 travel issues.

His first crop sold for up to NZ$360,000 at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale and will stand this season at a service fee of NZ$12,500 + GST.

Gravina doubles up

Promising Sebring colt Gravina added to his tidy record with a smart win in the 50 Year And Life Members’ H. at Randwick.

Gravina | Image courtesy of Ashlea Brennan

“He had a good couple of weeks since his last emphatic win here two weeks ago. It’s great to see him keep improving,” trainer James Cummings said. “He attacked the line well and it seems to us that he’s got a bit more in the locker.”

Gravina, who has won three of his nine starts, travelled strongly in third spot and finished powerfully along the fence for apprentice Reece Jones to account for Steel Diamond (Star Witness).

Vanbrugh strikes

Encosta De Lago’s son Vanbrugh is on the board following his daughter Mustang Valley’s (NZ) win in the Skycity Hamilton 1200 at Te Rapa.

Vanbrugh, who stands at NZ$5000 + GST, earned his place on Windsor Park Stud’s roster after a successful career for Champion trainer Chris Waller with wins in the G1 Spring Champion S. and a brace at Group 3 level.

“It is fantastic to get a 2-year-old winner for Vanbrugh as he won his 2-year-old debut at Randwick and then went on to be a 3-year-old Group 1 winner, so he was a genuinely classy individual,” Windsor Park’s Rodney Schick said.

“It would be fair to say that he hasn’t really had the numbers we were hoping for in his first couple of seasons at stud, but there is some nice word on the ones he has in work and to see a quality filly like this come through can only be good for him.”

Mustang Valley is trained by Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman for Windsor Park and partners and the filly from the family of the former two-time Australian Horse of the Year and multiple Group 1 winner Might And Power (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}).

Record-setting Sale ends

The three-day Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's June Sale of 2-Year-Olds more than bounced back from its 2020 pandemic-induced lull, ending with its highest-ever gross and average and with a record-tying median.

In all, 560 juveniles grossed US$24,492,950 (AU$31.7 million) for an average of US$43,737 (AU$56,600), besting the previous record figures of US$23,475,500 (AU$30.4 million) and US$39,722 (AU$51,388), respectively, set in 2015. The cumulative median was US$20,000 (AU$25,870). With 125 horses reported not sold, the buy-back rate was 18.2 per cent.

Four horses topped the US$400,000 (AU$517,500) mark during the three-session auction, with a filly by Practical Joke (USA) bringing a top price of US$425,000 (AU$550,000). Mike Ryan made the highest bid of the final session, going to US$410,000 (AU$530,334) to acquire a filly by Frosted (USA) from the Silvestre Chavez Thoroughbreds consignment.

Group 1 runners

Trainer John Quinn is set for a busy week at Royal Ascot, with G1 King's Stand S. starters Liberty Beach (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}) and Keep Busy (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) among a possible four runners at next week's marquee meeting.

Those aforementioned 4-year-old mares lined up against one another on their seasonal debuts in the May 22 G2 Temple S. at Haydock, with Philip Wilkins' Liberty Beach winning by a neck and Doreen Tabor's Keep Busy finishing fifth.

“They are working well,” the North Yorkshire-based Quinn said. “I'm very happy with them. They've come out of Haydock well.”

Looking Ahead - June 13

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we will aim to give you something to follow.

Today, we like the prospects at Hawkesbury of a pair of lightly tried contenders who look poised to bank their first winning cheques. At Swan Hill, we’re in the camp of a filly who showed enough on debut to warrant support again.

Hawkesbury, Race 2, 12.45pm AEST, Happy 50th Bretto Plate, $35,000, 1400m

Deficit (Snitzel) was bred by Emirates Park and sold through the Aquis draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale to co-trainer Gerald Ryan and David Raphael for $65,000. A half-brother to a pair of winners, he is out of the Medaglia D’Oro (USA) mare Taqaseem and she is a half-sister to the G1 Doomben Cup winner Sense Of Occasion (Street Sense {USA}).

Deficit as a yearling

Their dam is a half-sister to the G1 Sir Rupert Clarke S. winner Rewaaya (Singspiel {Ire}) and the family of the G1 Kenilworth Cape Derby winner Ertijaal (Hard Spun {USA}). Deficit has been in the money in both of his starts and is presented with an ideal opportunity to gain the first winning strike of his career.

Hawkesbury, Race 3, 1.20pm AEST, Nepean Boltmaster H., $35,000, 1300m

The Brad Widdup-trained Eminencia (I Am Invincible) was a trial winner leading into her first appearance at Kembla Grange where she got back in the running and made ground to finish fifth. That experience should stand her in good stead and she is expected to be much more of a competitive force in this lineup.

I Am Invincible, sire of Eminencia | Standing at Yarraman Park Stud

Bred and raced by George Altomonte’s Corumbene Stud, Eminencia is a half-sister to four winners and their dam Emissary (Dehere {USA}) won on three occasions. She is a daughter of the G1 The Metropolitan H. winner Heart Ruler (Marscay) and she is a half-sister to the dual Group 1 winner Coronation Day (Bletchingly) and to the dam of Egg Tart (Sebring), twice successful at the top level.

Swan Hill, Race 1, 11.40am AEST, bet365 Top Tote Plate, $35,000, 975m

Maconni (Nicconi) was offered by breeder Kooringal Stud at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale where he caught the eye of Salanitri racing, who paid $180,000 for the filly. She is out of the three-time winner Ingham Magic (Magic Albert) and the second dam is a sister to the G1 Doomben Cup winner Mr Bureaucrat (Bureaucracy {NZ}) and is half-sister to the G3 Gloaming S. winner and G1 Spring Champion S. runner-up All Black Gold (Canny Lad).

Macconi as a yearling

Prepared by Henry Dwyer, Maconni headed to Geelong to make her first raceday appearance and there was plenty to like about her performance to nail down third spot. She has drawn well, a major plus in a big field over this distance, and Michael Poy will again guide her fortunes and they appeal as a winning combination.
