Kooringal Stud has unveiled new domestic and international blood to its stallion roster in 2021 with the signings of Snitzel 5-year-old Sandbar and Last Kingdom (USA), a son of the mighty Frankel (GB).
Sandbar was a $650,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase and won twice as a 2-year-old, including success in the Listed Lonhro Plate, was runner-up in the G3 Pago Pago S. and finished eighth and 4l off the winner Estijaab (Snitzel) in the G1 Golden Slipper S.
He resumed with victory in the Listed Rosebud and placed in the G2 Roman Consul S. and Group 1 distinction narrowly eluded Sandbar when he was a 1.5l off the outstanding The Autumn Sun when fourth in the Golden Rose S. at Rosehill.
Sandbar is a son of the Street Cry (Ire) mare Tallow, who won the G3 Vanity S. and also the dam of the G1 Golden Slipper S. winner and Champion 2-Year-Old Farnan.
"We’ve been on the lookout for a speed horse and one who is a spitting image of his Champion Sire Snitzel so Sandbar seemed to fit the bill nicely." - Angus Lamont
“We’ve been on the lookout for a speed horse and one who is a spitting image of his Champion Sire Snitzel so Sandbar seemed to fit the bill nicely,” Kooringal Stud’s, Angus Lamont, said.
“He really complements our roster, giving breeders access to some of the world’s best sirelines, diverse types and differing credentials. Sandbar had fantastic form around some of the best horses of his generation.
“He’s a lovely athletic type and a three-quarter brother to the Golden Slipper-winning Champion 2-Year-Old Farnan, we are thrilled to have been able to secure him.”
French Group 3 winner
Last Kingdom showed his quality when successful in three of his first five appearances at Maisons-Lafitte in France, completing his hat-trick in the G3 Prix Daphnis over 1800 metres and subsequently add two more wins in Hong Kong.
“He was a very handy two and 3-year-old in Europe and then was purchased for big money to race in Hong Kong,” Lamont said.
“Frankel is a superstar and doing an incredible job in Australia with 35 starters to date for seven stakes winners, including multiple Group 1 winner Hungry Heart and G1 Metropolitan winner Mirage Dancer.”
Last Kingdom is out of Compelling (Ire) (Kingmambo {USA}), a half-sister to the G2 Doncaster Flying Childers S. winner Requinto (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) with their dam the G1 Phoenix S. winner Damson (Entrepreneur {GB}).
Sandbar will be offered at an introductory price of $8800 (inc GST) while Last Kingdom’s fee will be $6600 (inc GST) alongside associate Kooringal stallions Prized Icon and The Brothers War.
