Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we will aim to give you something to follow.
Today, we are on juvenile watch and at Canterbury Park, we like a filly who can improve on a sound resuming performance and a colt who is unbeaten at the trials. At Cranbourne, we’re in the corner of a youngster who was a minor player on debut in a race that has proved a strong form guide.
Canterbury Park, Race 1, 1.20pm AEST, Microphone @ Darley H., $50,000, 1250m
Miss In Charge (Hinchinbrook) produced two sound efforts during her first preparation and then trialled pleasingly before resuming at Warwick Farm. The filly made ground well to finish third behind Verne (Snitzel), who has since won again in Saturday grade at Randwick so the form out of the race speaks for itself.
Miss In Charge as a yearling
Bred by Go Bloodstock, Miss In Charge was bought out of Newgate’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale consignment by Prime Thoroughbreds for $120,000. The Kris Lees-trained youngster is a daughter of the juvenile winner and Listed performer Positive Charge (Charge Forward), who is a sister to the dual Group 3 winner Slightly Sweet. Their dam is a half-sister to the Listed Gosford Classic winner and G1 Spring Champion S. placegetter Stay Tuned (Marscay) and from a pedigree that includes several North American stakes winners.
Canterbury Park, Race 2, 2pm AEST, Vinery Stud H., $50,000, 1250m
The Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-prepared Garmish (Snitzel) has looked sharp winning both of his trials at Rosehill under jockey Brenton Avdulla, who takes the ride here and the combination is blessed with the inside alley. Combined with an impressive pedigree, the colt looks a strong debut prospect.
Garmish as a yearling
Garmish was offered by breeder Arrowfield Stud at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and was knocked down to Aquis and Ryan for $450,000. He is out of Sananda (Ire) (Anabaa {USA}), a half-sister to the three-time Group 1 winner Sarafina (Fr) (Refuse To Bend {Ire}), dam of Group 3-winning siblings Geniale (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and Savarin (Jpn), and to the G3 Meydan Firebreak S. winner Sandagiyr (Fr) (Dr Fong {USA}).
Cranbourne, Race 1, 12.10pm AEST, Polytrack 2YO Fillies’ Plate, $35,000, 1200m
Trainer and part-owner Danny O’Brien looks to have a strong hand here with the resuming filly Vancouver Magic (Vancouver), who hasn’t been seen since she finished a handy fourth at Pakenham in February. The race has proved to be one of form value as the winner La Roque (Kuroshio) came out and landed the G3 Thoroughbred Breeders’ S. at Flemington at her next appearance.
Vancouver Magic as a yearling
Vancouver Magic was purchased for $100,000 by O’Brien at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale where she was part of Eureka Stud’s draft. She is out of the Listed Gimcrack S. winner Defiant Dame (More Than Ready {USA}) and her half-sister Hidden Warrior (Hidden Dragon) won an edition of the G3 Red Anchor S. Further 2-year-old performance is provided by family member Kirkberg (Mighty Avalanche), who won the Listed Maribyrnong Trial S. and produced the Ryder S. winner Snow Excuse (NZ) (No Excuse Needed {GB}).
