Looking Ahead - July 22

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we will aim to give you something to follow.

On Thursday, Peter Moody debuts a son of Written Tycoon at Cranbourne, where we also have a sale-topping colt by Deep Field resuming for Lindsay Park, while at Kembla Grange, a filly by Flying Artie takes our eye as she returns to the track.

Trainer Peter Moody debuts Written Tycoon gelding Henestrosa here. Originally a $290,000 buy as a weanling by Fernrigg Farm at the 2019 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale, he was passed in with strong reserves at both the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale (Round 2) and retained to race by Fernrigg's Rae-Louise Kelly with a few other partners.

He is out of La Llorona (Choisir), the half-sister to Listed winner Specter (Nadeem) and from the extended family of multiple Group 1 winner Suavito (NZ) (Thorn Park).

Henestrosa had a couple of trials at Cranbourne during previous campaigns, finishing second both times, while he has also finished second in his two jump-outs at Pakenham since being gelded. In his most recent, he worked hard on the pace and finished a close second behind Seydoux (Xtravagant {NZ}), who was subsequently placed in a midweek city race.

Deep Blast (Deep Field), who resumes for Ben and JD Hayes, had one run at his first preparation, finishing third when well-supported at Ballarat back in March. At a recent Flemington jump-out, the 2-year-old showed a good turn of foot to power through the field and win by a clear margin.

He was the top-priced colt out of the 2020 Inglis Ready2Race Sale, when purchased for $610,000 by Louis Ho and the Macau Jockey Club from the draft of Lime Country Thoroughbreds. He was originally a $230,000 purchase through the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

This colt's dam, Wind Shift (Exceed And Excel), comes from a very strong extended Godolphin family which includes the G1 Thousand Guineas winner Flit (Medaglia D'Oro {USA}), Listed winner Federal (Medaglia D'Oro {USA}) and stakes-placed Flow (Street Cry {Ire}).

Kembla Grange, Race 4, 1.35pm AEST, Darren Beadman 2YO Mdn, $35,000, 1000m

The Gwenda Markwell-trained filly Flying Squad (Flying Artie) ran third when favourite on debut back in February and shone in a recent Kembla Grange trial, sitting deep and then finishing off strongly to win well for jockey Keagan Latham, who retains the ride in this race.

She is bred by Kingstar Farm and races in the colours of Matthew Sandblom's Hollymount Stud. Her dam, Forfeiture (Commands) was placed in a G2 Dane Ripper S. and has already produced the G3 Widden S. winner Amercement (Lonhro) as well as another winner, Penalty (Street Cry {Ire}). Group 3 winner and stallion Stryker also features on the pedigree page.

Looking Back

Wednesday's Looking Ahead article picked out a winner in Godolphin filly Laurelin (Lonhro), who was successful at Kensington for James Cummings, in the manner of a 2-year-old with plenty of upside. She is the sister to Group 1 winner Kementari.

Our other two selections also ran very good races. Devil's Throat (Snitzel) finished fourth, beaten a nose for third, in his debut at the Kensington track while the Archie Alexander-trained Star Spirit (Star Witness) powered home to finish second in his second start at Sandown.
