Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse that has trialled particularly well, we will aim to give you something to follow.
On Friday, we track a trio of very interesting debutants. There are two seven-figure yearlings stepping out for their first race at Wyong, while a promising Dundeel (NZ) colt makes his first appearance for Anthony and Sam Freedman at Bendigo.
Wyong, Race 1, 12.50pm AEST, Priority Business Lawyers 4YO Mdn, $50,000, 1350m
The connections of Stay Wealthy (Redoute's Choice) have had to show a degree of patience, with the well-bred gelding making his debut as an early 4-year-old for Gary Moore. He has had a series of trials ahead of this first start and has looked good in each of them, including a second at Rosehill last week.
Stay Wealthy as a yearling
He cost James Moore/Summit Racing Australia $1.075 million through the Newhaven Park draft at the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. His dam, Aware (Tale Of The Cat {USA}) has produced the winner Awareness (Redoute's Choice) and is a daughter of the Group 2 winner and multiple Group 1 placegetter Media (Gilded Time {USA}). Media is a half-sister to the G2 Wakeful S. winner Timbourina (Timber Country {USA}) and Listed winner Cardinal Virtue (Elusive Quality {USA}).
Bendigo, Race 2, 1pm AEST, Adroit Bendigo Mdn, $35,000, 1300m
Cerberus (Dundeel {NZ}) makes his debut for Anthony and Sam Freedman in the colours of James Harron. He didn't handle the wet ground at his Cranbourne trial earlier in August but looked a lot sharper when closing off stylishly in a recent Caulfield jump-out.
Cerberus as a yearling
At $750,000 through the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, where he was offered by Mill Park, he is the fourth highest-priced yearling ever by Dundeel (NZ). His dam Scarlet Moretta (Fastnet Rock) has produced the winners Glory Game (Toronado {Ire}) and Bolt By (Night Of Thunder {Ire}). She was twice a winner for Freedman and descends from the successful 'V' family in Europe, which contains Grade/Group 1 winners such as Volga (Ire) (Caerleon {USA}), Vallee Enchantee (Ire) (Peintre Celebre {USA}) and Vespone (Ire) (Llandoff {USA}).
Wyong, Race 2, 1.25pm AEST, Winning Commercial Mdn, $50,000, 1200m
Invincible Vision (I Am Invincible) finally gets to the track for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott as a 5-year-old and as a half-brother to G1 Golden Slipper S. winner Mossfun (Mossman), will be closely watched. His half-brother Aramco (Magic Albert) has been a multiple stakes winner in Singapore, while his dam, Eye For Fun (Snitzel), is a half-sister to the Listed winner Cat D'Antibes (Tale Of The Cat {USA}).
Invincible Vision
He was a $1.05 million buy for his trainers and Blue Sky Bloodstock from the Fairview Park draft at the 2018 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale. His trials have been good ahead of his debut, winning both of them at Randwick, giving the suggestion that he is ready to make up for his delayed entry to racing.
Looking Back
It was a winning day for Looking Ahead on Thursday with Direct (Siyouni {Fr}) breaking his maiden with an all-the-way win at Cranbourne. Healthy Beauty (Maurice {Jpn}) finished fourth in her event at Muswellbrook, while Forgot You (NZ) (Savabeel) was scratched.
