Twist in tale for Ranveer's breeders

Success with Ranveer (Winning Rupert) in Saturday’s G2 Danehill S. at Flemington will be a welcome reward for breeder Jane Beynon.

Beynon, who owns and operates Einoncliff Park with her husband Wayne in the Western Australian town of Boyanup, sourced his dam Bitter Twist (California Dane) in foal to young Newgate Farm sire Winning Rupert at the 2018 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, paying $60,000.

It was a decision which paid early dividends with the resultant Ranveer knocked down to Matt Laurie Racing for $200,000 at last year’s Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale.

“When we saw Bitter Twist, we loved the style of her, and while we probably didn’t need to buy another broodmare at the Sale, she was just a lovely mare who had only had the one foal at the time,” Beynon told TDN AusNZ.

Beynon described Ranveer as a ‘neat and correct type’ who was always destined for success in the sales ring.

“He wasn’t the biggest foal ever born but as he grew and the months went on you could see he had a bit of quality about him and by the time we got to the yearling preparation stage he was really looking the goods,” she said.

“We were quietly confident that he would sell well, the reserve was around the $100,000 mark but we were hoping for a little bit more. So, when he did go for $200,000, we were very pleased.”

The talented colt has since cemented his status as a promising sprinter, having finished 2.8l second behind Profiteer (Capitalist) on debut before running second to the match-fit General Beau (Brazen Beau) on resumption at Caulfield at his most recent start.

He was victorious at his second career start in June when finishing 0.8l the better of Our Heidi (Needs Further) in a $125,000 2-year-old H. at Sandown.

A strong interest

The Beynons continue to watch Ranveer with a keen eye despite no immediate ownership ties.

His half-sister, a filly by Oratorio was purchased privately by Matt Laurie while his yearling half-brother by Press Statement is being prepared for next year’s Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale.

Having foaled a filly to So You Think (NZ) in August, Bitter Twist has since been covered by Darling View Thoroughbreds' sire Playing God.

“Once the Winning Rupert colt (Ranveer) was on the ground we decided on a local stallion and at the time (2018) Oratorio was one of the better ones here and then we decided on Press Statement the following year (2019) as he was ticking plenty of boxes,” Beynon said.

“As for the Playing God mating this year, we thought we would go to the best here (WA) as Darling View is part of our Western Breeders Alliance.”

Bitter Twist was a winner of one career start over 1000 metres and is out of the Listed-placed Inspect (Integra), making her a half-sister to the Listed Fairetha S. winner Hoegaarden (Flying Spur) and a sister to the G3 Standish S. third placegetter Inspector.

This is the family of eight-time Group 1 winner Intergaze (Integra).

A life in horses

Beynon has been surrounded by horses her entire life, having been involved in show jumping and eventing during her younger years before taking out a trainer’s licence and saddling up four winners during the 2011/12 season.

“I was dabbling with tried horses and had a young family at the time while working on a small stud too which was pretty time-consuming. I loved training but it was a matter of getting my priorities right,” Beynon said.

“It was then just a natural progression to the breeding side of things as I was always interested in the thoroughbred itself and had been running a small stud in Boyanup.”

Einoncliff is a multi-purpose operation, offering agistment and yearling preparation services while foaling down roughly 35 mares a season, with 12-15 of those are members of its personal broodmare band.

No stone has been left unturned this season to ensure its mares meet a perfect physical match.

“We’re sending some (mares) to stallions in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, including (Spendthrift's) Dirty Work, (Newgate Farm’s) Winning Rupert and (Aquis Farm’s) Pierata,” Beynon said.

Four-time WA Listed winner Settle Strada (Strada) remains Einoncliff’s most credentialled product to date.

However, Beynon is confident Ranveer can scale further heights regardless of the outcome in Saturday’s G2 Danehill S.

“It is a very strong field but we’re hopeful and it would be fantastic if he’s competitive as we will learn if he’s really up to it,” Beynon said.

Ranveer will jump from barrier seven of 12 in the Danehill S. and is to be ridden by Daniel Stackhouse.
