Looking Ahead - October 29

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we will aim to give you something to follow.

Friday, we pay attention to a half-brother to multi-million dollar mare Mizzy (Zoustar), who is debuting at Kilmore for the Lindsay Park operation, a Written Tycoon filly from the family of Rothesay (Fastnet Rock) and a gelding at Cranbourne from the family of Golden Slipper winner Overreach (Exceed And Excel).

Kilmore, Race 1, 12.30pm AEDT, bet365 Top Tote Plus 3YO Maiden Plate, $25,000, 1112m

Three-year-old gelding Systemic (Capitalist) will be having his first start under Robert Crabtree's silks for trainers Ben and JD Hayes at this meeting, and he’s been very useful in two trials at Tatura to date, the last occurring a fortnight ago when he was second over 850 metres by the narrowest of margins.

Systemic is from the first crop of foals by boom sire Capitalist, and he’ll be ridden in his debut by Luke Nolen from a handy inside draw. He will be the only debutant in the field with the exception of Little Miss Rich (Rich Enuff).

The chestnut gelding is the third foal from the stakes winning mare Missy Cummings (Magnus), making him a half-brother to the sensational Mizzy (Zoustar). This is a pedigree that has kept giving in recent times, Mizzy selling to Tom Magnier from the Newgate Consignment for $2.2 million at this year’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

Systemic was withdrawn by Blue Gum Farm from the 2020 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, but his Written Tycoon half-brother made $600,000 at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, selling from Bhima Thoroughbreds to Mick Price Racing.

Kilmore, Race 3, 1.35pm AEDT, C&M Build Group F&M Maiden Plate, $25,000, 1612m

Delicious Tycoon (Written Tycoon) has been placed in four lifetime starts to date, and the 3-year-old filly meets this field off the back of three runs this preparation, the latest being a second place at Bendigo on October 16.

She is trained at Mornington by Matt Laurie, and she has also drawn the inside gate with apprentice Lachlan Neindorf, who gives her a handy pull in this set-weights race.

Delicious Tycoon is the first foal from the stakes-winning mare Rockolicious (Fastnet Rock), and she was purchased by Laurie from the draft of Valiant Stud at the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $240,000. This is the family of Lyndhurst Stud Farm stallion Rothesay on the second line, with third dam Canny Lass (Bletchingly) a three-time Group 1 winner and far-reaching broodmare in her own right.

Cranbourne, Race 5, 7.15pm AEDT, Frankston Mazda 3-Year-Old Maiden Plate, $35,000, 1600m

Three-year-old Xtravagant (NZ) gelding Improvident was second on debut last time out at Mornington a fortnight ago, and he heads into this field with a wider draw (barrier eight) and Daniel Stackhouse in the saddle. His vanquisher on debut, the Ready For Victory gelding From Pantherland, will take his place in the G3 Carbine Club S. on Flemington’s Derby Day card on Saturday, so the formline is decent.

Improvident was bred by Newhaven Park from the Hussonet (USA) mare Sovereign Jewel, and the second dam in this pedigree is a full sister to the dam of stakes-winning sires Reward For Effort and Consular. There is plenty of black type on this page, including Champion 2-Year-Old Filly and G1 Golden Slipper winner Overreach (Exceed And Excel).

Improvident was sold at the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale by Newhaven Park, going to bloodstock agent Justin Bahen for $170,000. The gelding’s So You Think (NZ) half-brother sold at the same Sale this year to Bridle Bloodstock for $150,000.
