Looking Ahead - November 16

4 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we will aim to give you something to follow.

On Tuesday, we track a trio of very well-related 3-year-olds on debut. First it is to Wangaratta, where a Written Tycoon filly steps out of a recent impressive jump-out win, then to Wyong, where a Snitzel filly looks ready to make an impression and a Sebring colt aims to live up to his formidable pedigree.

Wangaratta, Race 5, 3pm AEDT, Bi-Rite Electrical Wangaratta Mdn, $25,000, 1170m

My Artemis, 3-year-old filly (Written Tycoon x Dancing Heather {Danzero})

Ben and JD Hayes present well-related 3-year-old filly My Artemis (Written Tycoon) for her debut after an impressive win in a recent Flemington jump-out. She sat outside the leader on that occasion and looked under pressure when a rival came up on her outside, but she responded well under riding to win quite comfortably.

Bred and owned by Seymour Bloodstock, she is a half-sister to the speedy Group 2 winner Heatherly (Lonhro), who was also placed in a G1 Moir S. and a G1 Oakleigh Plate. Their dam, Dancing Heather (Danzero), has produced four winners in all and is an unraced half-sister to G1 Stradbroke H. winner Linton (Galileo {Ire}).

Wyong, Race 4, 3.05pm AEDT, Wyong Leagues Group Mdn, $35,000, 1000m

Joyzel, 3-year-old filly (Snitzel x World Joy {Anabaa {USA}})

Joyzel (Snitzel) makes her debut for Bjorn Baker, having finished close-up in both of her trials this time in, finishing second at Rosehill and then third at Warwick Farm, giving her a great grounding for her first raceday appearance.

A $120,000 buy for Baker and Clarke Bloodstock through the Baramul Stud draft at the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, she is the eighth runner for Anabaa (USA) mare World Joy, who has produced six winners, including the Group 3-placed Kumasi (Snitzel). It's an extended family which includes plenty of stakes winners including Group 1-winning pair Bentley Biscuit (Peintre Celebre {USA}) and Thorn Park.

Wyong, Race 5, 3.45pm AEDT, Great Northern Mdn, $35,000, 1100m

Ransakka, 3-year-old colt (Sebring x Scandiva {Fastnet Rock})

Ransakka (Sebring) hails from one of the best families in the Studbook and the 3-year-old colt makes his debut here for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. A look back through his three Randwick trials ahead of his first start sees that he has not been beaten more than 2.1l in any of them. He showed speed in his most recent and while he ended up in seventh, he was in the poorer part of the track and was not touched over the final stages.

Waterhouse and Bott paid $250,000 for him through the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft at the 2020 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale. He was sold on behalf of his breeders Dorrington Farm, in whose colours he still carries.

His dam, Scandiva (Fastnet Rock) is a Group 2 winner and Group 1-placed half-sister to Group 1 winner Magnus and two other stakes winners as well as to Helsinge (Desert Sun {GB}). That mare is, of course, the blue hen who produced Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) and All Too Hard and is the grandam of dual Group 1 winner Ole Kirk.

Looking Back

The best-performed of our trio on Sunday was Ella Exceeds (Mikki Isle {Jpn}), who finished second at Hobart, while Zoomurudi (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and Great Week (Frankel {GB}) failed to figure in the finish of their respective races.
