Looking Ahead - November 17

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we will aim to give you something to follow.

On Wednesday, three fillies are on the radar, including a half-sister to a Group 1 winner at Strathalbyn and a Nicconi 2-year-old from Chris Waller's stable at Rosehill. We also check in on a resuming Sebring filly with a close connection to a Horse of the Year.

Strathalbyn, Race 2, 1.50pm AEDT (1.20pm local), Fox Creek Wines Fillies & Mares Mdn, $21,600, 1100m

Southern Swoop, 3-year-old filly (American Pharoah {USA} x Elegant Eagle {NZ} {Zabeel {NZ}})

Well-related 3-year-old filly Southern Swoop (American Pharoah {USA}) debuts for Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas having shown a bit at a recent Oakbank trial, where she missed the start slightly, then railed through to lead before getting a bit lost down the straight and finishing second.

She is a half-sister to G1 Champagne S. winner Go Indy Go (Bernardini {USA}) as well as Group 3 winner Essay Raider (Bernardini {USA}) and stakes-placed Battle Brewing (Medaglia D'Oro {USA}). Macdonald's G1 Caulfield Cup winning-mare Southern Speed (Southern Image {USA}) is also part of the page as is G1 Golden Slipper S. winner Ha Ha (Danehill {USA}).

Rosehill, Race 1, 2pm AEDT, Harry Angel @ Darley H., $50,000, 1100m

Waverider Buoy, 2-year-old filly (Nicconi x Catch A Wave {Fastnet Rock})

The famous Ingham Racing colours feature here with the Chris Waller-trained 2-year-old filly Waverider Buoy (Nicconi). Her recent trial at this track saw her finish a close-up third behind subsequent winner Evening Star (Rubick). She powered through the line there which was a positive side ahead of her debut.

She is out of Catch A Wave (Fastnet Rock), who is a half-sister to recent G3 Carbine Club S. winner Fangirl (Sebring), who races in the same colours. Her second dam is Little Surfer Girl (Encosta De Lago), a Listed-winning daughter of dual G1 Oaks-winner Special Harmony (Spinning World {USA}).

Sandown Lakeside, Race 3, 2.10pm AEDT, Tile Importer H., $50,000, 1300m

Secret Glamour, 3-year-old filly (Sebring x Palace Whispers {Snippetson})

Secret Glamour (Sebring), who looked very good in her two starts as a 2-year-old, returns to the track to embark on her 3-year-old career for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace. She won a Cranbourne maiden in impressive fashion in May and was then second in a Flemington race in June.

She was purchased by Ciaron Maher Racing for $270,000 through the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft at the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. She is a sister-in-blood to Horse of the Year Dissident, who was a five-time Group 1 winner. Her dam, Palace Whispers (Snippetson) has produced the recent placegetter Sea Of Secrets (Sebring).
