Flooding situation easing in Upper Hunter
Written by

3 min read
The NSW Emergency Service and local farmers have their eyes firmly set on the Hunter River as it continues to rise at Aberdeen after major flooding in Scone and evacuations at Cassilis.
It comes after a severe weather warning was issued for the Hunter on Friday with thunderstorms producing damaging winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding.
"Scone has recorded 64mm, mostly associated with a thunderstorm earlier today," Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) senior meteorologist Agata Imielska said to Channel Nine.

Flood waters forced Scone to be cut into two halves, with the closure of Liverpool Street in Scone from Aberdeen Street to the Satur Road roundabout. The Upper Hunter Shire Council said the roads were impassable for several hours due to flooding and there was no diversion possible, however easing conditions saw the reopening in early evening.
It is hoped that the rain will continue to ease and take the stress off anxious breeders who have been busy moving mares and foals to higher ground.
It's a long way from the devastating drought of 2017 to 2020, to which Arrowfield's Stud Manager Matt Hill can attest.
Matt Hill
“I’ve only lived here for five years but all the locals I’ve spoken to said it’s (flooding) as bad as they’ve ever seen it," said Hill.
“We’re fortunate that we’ve been able to move all of our stock to higher ground, but the river levels are very high and while there are portions of the farm that are cut off, we’re in good shape.
“We knew that it was coming, we always look up-river and anticipated that it would come down, although not as profusely as we thought but we were ready.
“I’ve touched base with neighbours, and they seem like they’re all in good shape."
Vinery Stud’s Adam White said the stud was in decent shape, given the magnitude of the deluge.
Adam White
“Things aren’t too bad here, there’s a lot of water but our property drains well, and we’ve only had to move a few mares and foals to higher ground which we were prepared for," Adam White said.
“There’s a lot of farms worse off than us because they’re not as undulating and we’re lucky we have river frontage, so the water can drain quickly back into it.”
“In my 20 years at Vinery, I’ve never seen it this bad before.”
The local breeding and racing community has rallied around, as it often does well in trying times, with Scone Race Club CEO Steven Keene offering local residents a refuge for horses, should it be required.

"It got as far up as around one metre off the edge of the back of the racetrack. Creeks have been turned into torrents where they're typically a trickle," said Keene.
"It's stopped raining for now and the creeks are starting to recede. I understand that the Glenbawn Dam is up around 75 per cent capacity now, which is good because at 100 per cent, the locals tell me that's when the real trouble starts."
While the flood warning is still in place for Scone, the forecast for the next 24 hours is for 10mm of rain and conditions look set to ease.

Giles hoping for Winterbottom success with Red Can Man
Written by
Robert Edwards

Ellie Giles' passion for thoroughbred racing and breeding runs deep in her veins, inherited from her grandfather Tom Reynolds. Ellie caught up with TDN AusNZ's Robert Edwards ahead of Red Can Man's run in the Winterbottom S. on Saturday at Ascot.
Ellie Giles sat back on a leased South-West property and contemplated for a few years on whether she would again take the plunge and purchase land to establish another Korilya Stud.
Ellie’s passion for thoroughbred racing and breeding runs deep in her veins, inherited from her grandfather Tom Reynolds, who won the 1938 Bunbury Guineas with True Gleam and the 1941 WA Derby with Kimra (Agrion {NZ}).

Ellie’s mother Edith took over her father’s two broodmares Miss Swain (Agrion {NZ}) and England Lady, who became the foundation broodmares to Korilya Stud some 60 years ago.
Dick and Edith established their historic Korilya Stud at Busselton, standing stallions such as Karrakatta Plate and WA Sires’ winner Little Roderick in the early years, followed by imports Fissigh (GB) and Son Of The Wind (USA)– a half-brother to Kentucky Derby winner Swaps (USA).
Ellie stood stallions Surtee, Lomond Bay (NZ), Star Pak, Swift Ho, Sarab (Ire), Twig Ruler, Ridgeway and Proart and in the latter part of his career Jevington.
The late Jevington
Ellie scaled back her Korilya operations around 2015, working for Peter Walsh’s Amelia Park Racing and Breeding preparing their yearlings for sale. She felt the time was right to transition to a life as a boutique breeder and culled her broodmare herd to a handful of mares.
A new look in Boyanup
Ellie sold the top seller at the 2020 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale in Aitchdeetee (War Chant {USA} x Brocky's Ace {Surtee}), who was bought by Attunga Stud and Clarke Bloodstock for $240,000. She then put the proceeds from that sale into purchasing her new Korilya Stud at Boyanup, some two hours drive south of Perth.

“I got sick of renting and decided to buy a property,” Ellie said. “I have been here for 12 months next week. It was not an established horse property and I had to wait for about four months before moving in because the paddocks needed to be built.
“It is a fair bit established now with a lot of money spent. It is only 36 acres, but I have 10 broodmares here and a few other horses.
“It is a lovely piece of land with rich red loam soil and close to the town of Boyanup.”

Aitchdeetee’s half-brother Red Can Man (Gingerbread Man) joined a host of interstate winners from Korilya, when winning the G3 Monash S. (1100 metres) for trainer David Brideoake last July.
Ellie’s other interstate winners include, Roadsong (Haulpak), Wink At Me (Jungle Boy), Penny Banger (Zedrich), Scenic Assault (Scenic {Ire}), Mt Henry (Jevington), Silent Sedition (War Chant {USA}) and Aitchdeetee’s half-sister Quilista (Scandal Keeper {USA}).
Quilista, who was a $10,000 yearling at the Magic Millions Perth Sale, sold for $950,000 at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale in 2019 and fetched $1 million, in foal to Pierata, knocked down to Cressfield Stud at the same Sale, in May.

Silent Sedition is the standout having provided Ellie’s only Group 1, winning the 2017 William Reid S. at Moonee Valley.
The Red Can Man can
Red Can Man, who was bought by Commercial Bloodstock for $50,000 in Perth in 2018, is back in the stables of Steve Wolfe and will run as one of the leading fancies in Saturday’s $1 million Crown Perth Winterbottom S. (1200 metres).
Wolfe expects Red Can Man to improve sharply on his first-up fourth to Winterbottom favourite Elite Street (Street Boss {USA}) in the Colonel Reeves S. (1100 metres) at Ascot on November 13.

Wolfe set Red Can Man an arduous task last year, when after running fourth to Inspirational Girl (Reliable Man {GB}) in the Railway S. (1600 metres), he backed him up in the Winterbottom a week later, where he ran a solid sixth to Elite Street.
Wolfe has specifically targeted the Winterbottom this time around.
“He had a rough trip to Melbourne and a rough trip back home,” Ellie said. "He had a bit against him last start and he should be fitter for Saturday.
“I am told he is a very big eater, which does not surprise me knowing his mother. I thought his win in the Monash was good and he ran a couple of nice placings (Melbourne). He beat home Superstorm (fourth) when he ran third in the Lawrence S. and that form has been franked with Superstorm winning the Cantala S. at Flemington.
"He (Red Can Man) beat home Superstorm (fourth) when he ran third in the Lawrence S. and that form has been franked with Superstorm winning the Cantala S. at Flemington." - Ellie Giles
“Elite Street looks hard to beat, but if he turns up in top order he has to be a good chance.”
Brocky’s Ace (Surtee) holds elder statesmanship at Korilya, being rugged each day throughout winter.
The 18–year-old mare has a colt by War Chant (USA) to go to the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale next February and dropped a full-brother to Red Can Man on Melbourne Cup Day.
War Chant (USA) | Standing at Yarradale Stud
Ellie named the Gingerbread Man colt “Macattack” in celebration of top jockey James McDonald’s win on Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}) in the Melbourne Cup.
“He is about 10 metres from me at this minute,” Ellie said. "He was born on the morning of the Melbourne Cup.
“I didn’t want to call him 'JayMac' in case he was slow so I decided on 'Macattack'. He is quite a good size and has a good attitude.
“I didn’t want to call him (Gingerbread Man x Brocky's Ace) 'JayMac' in case he was slow so I decided on 'Macattack'. He is quite a good size and has a good attitude." - Ellie Giles
“The vets will check Brocky’s Ace to see if she can be served before the end of the season. I looked after her through the winter keeping her rugged. She would stand at the gate whinnying out to me to come out and rug her whenever there was a bit of rain about.
“She is looking pretty good for an 18-year-old mare. Getting any more foals out of her I will need luck. I never count my chickens before they hatch. I am not sure where to send her at this stage. Whether to go to Gingerbread Man, Playing God or Maschino.
“I already have three mares in foal to Gingerbread Man.”
Gingerbread Man | Standing at Yarradale Stud
The War Chant x Brocky’s Ace colt will head eight yearlings Ellie plans to sell at next year’s Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale.
Jaime O’Bree, of Ruby Racing and Breeding, will prepare Ellie’s sale’s draft.
O’Bree, who runs her business with her brother Daniel and with the support of their parents Rod and Bridie, celebrated a stakes double with their broodmare Sambar (More Than Ready {USA}), when Tiger Of Malay (Extreme Choice) won the G3 Up And Coming S. at Kembla Grange and Samizdat (Not A Single Doubt) won the Listed Newmarket H. at Belmont Park on August 14.
“Toning up yearlings for sale is a younger person’s job, I think,” Ellie, 70, said. "They will go to Jaime within the next 10 days.”
Maschino to shine
Alwyn Park sire Maschino has a strong hand in the Winterbottom through $3.30 second-favourite Wilchino and $21 chance Cup Night, who runs first-up off three barrier trials.
Maschino | Standing at Alwyn Park Stud
Wilchno is a strong second-string, with an unbroken seven straight wins, to trainer Dan Morton’s $2.65 favourite Elite Street. Elite Street is seeking to become the first horse since Hardrada (Marooned {GB}) in 2002/03 to claim successive Winterbottoms.
Wilchino is a member of the 2016/17 crop produce by Maschino, who stands at a fee of $6600 (inc GST) at Andrew and his wife Sandra’s Serpentine stud.
It is truly an outstanding crop with 10 foals to race from 13 foals for a remarkable eight individual winners of 37 races, earning prizemoney of $1,824,680.
It (Maschino) is truly an outstanding crop with 10 foals to race from 13 foals for a remarkable eight individual winners of 37 races, earning prizemoney of $1,824,680.
Morton purchased Wilchino as a yearling at the 2018 Magic Millions Perth Sale for $55,000.
Wilchino’s connections have been rewarded for their patience. They spelled the mare for 10 months after she pulled up lame in the near foreleg, following a first-up third in a 3-year-old Maiden at Northam on September 5, 2019.
The 5-year-old has rallied to record eight wins from her past nine starts.
Wilchino | Image courtesy of Western Racepix
Her sole blimp was when she ran 13th down the straight 1000 metres at Pinjarra in June. She returned with an elevated heart-rate and was slow to recover. Top jockey Chris Parnham has ridden her to seven of those eight wins and sticks to the front-running mare in the Winterbottom.
Wild by name, Wild by nature
Alwyn Park owner John Andrew bred Wilchino from his mare Wild Park (Bletchley Park {Ire}).
“I take my hat off to her owners for being so patient,” Andrew said. "She won a trial by nearly 8l and then went amiss first-up. I believe she had a knee problem and they (owners) took their time with her so they deserve credit for that.”
Andrew recalled his first meeting with Wild Park was not cordial.
“Wild Park was in a paddock when I went to have a look at her,” Andrew said. “I was thinking of buying her, but she attacked me. I had patted her on the forehead, but she swung around and gave me both barrels.
“I was thinking of buying her (Wild Park), but she attacked me. I had patted her on the forehead, but she swung around and gave me both barrels." - John Andrew
“She took off down the paddock. I was still walking in the paddock when she came back and had another shot at me. I had to duck under the fence to get away. I found out she was an orphan. I think that was why she thought she could get away with that behaviour.
“Gino Poletti (trainer) recommended I buy her and I bought her for $10,000 even though she attacked me twice in the paddock.
“Wilchino was her last foal. She was in foal to Trade Fair (the next year) and was only days away from giving birth. I moved her up into the birth paddock with another mare. She walked into the paddock about 100 metres and laid down. I thought she was going to foal and by the time I got there she was dead.”
Andrew had a daughter of Wild Park - Wild Memories (Patronize) covered by Maschino this season.

“I would dearly love to see Wilchino win,” Andrew said. "Ironically three horses in the Winterbottom were bred within a five kilometre circumference of our farm. The other two are Bernie Miller’s Cup Night and Robert Anderson’s Elite Street.”
Patience is a virtue
John Andrew will present a draft of 24 yearlings at February’s Magic Millions Perth Sale in the Swan Valley, including four colts and two fillies by Maschino.
John Andrew | Image courtesy of Alwyn Park Stud
A full brother to Cup Night will be among other stock on offer by Maschino. The full brother will be part of the draft presented by Ruby Racing and Breeding.
“I rate Maschino as an absolute gentleman,” Andrew said. "He is throwing his temperament into his stock. I know he has produced 2-year-old winners, but I believe they need time.
“I think you are better off waiting. One of the reasons he has not been supported in the past was because his race record was in WA. He was a $240,000 colt and a half-sister sold for $850,000.
"He (Maschino) is throwing his temperament into his stock. I know he has produced 2-year-old winners, but I believe they need time." - John Andrew
“The average price of Tahni Girl’s six yearlings sold was $378,000, thus he has a very good pedigree.”
Maschino has over 100 mares booked to him this season.
Wilchino will be the first horse Andrew has bred to run in the Winterbottom.
“They reckon rewards come to those who wait,” Andrew said. "Next year will be my 48th year of presenting yearlings at the Perth Sale. So I have waited a long time.”

Conlan looking to capitalise with Kiko at Caulfield
Written by

Jim Conlan and long-time supporter, Nick Turnbull, of Miss Pennymoney (Brocco {USA}) fame, will be hoping Caulfield can once again prove a happy hunting ground when they unveil valuable filly Kiko (Capitalist) in Saturday’s Listed Merson Cooper S.

The ‘semi-retired’ horseman, who trained at ‘The Heath’ until 2001, has only saddled up one juvenile winner from a handful of runners since the 2010/11 season, however, the precocity of Capitalist’s progeny left him with little reason not to showcase Turnbull’s $720,000 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase before Christmas.

“She’s (Kiko) a filly that’s always worked well but I’ve kept her very contained in her three jump-outs and gallops because she can race a bit fierce if you try to see what she can do on the clock,” Conlan told TDN AusNZ.
“We’re going to find out if there’s anything there on Saturday and whether she’s going to measure up to this class, but she gives you the feel that she will, and all her track riders have told me there’s a motor there.”
Conlan described Kiko as a ‘lovely type’ who is mature enough to cope with the rigours of early racing but also noted the prevalence of stakes-performed milers on her American and Canadian centric pedigree page.
Capitalist | Standing at Newgate Farm
She is out of 1600 metre G2 Woodbine Nassau S. winner Sky Treasure (USA) (Sky Mesa {USA}), making her a half-sister to 1800 metre G3 Del Mar Native Diver S. winner Azul Coast (USA) (Super Saver {USA}).
“Yes, she is early, but the female side of her family was full of horses who matured into themselves as three-and 4-year-olds,” Conlan said.
“Although I’m hoping the Capitalist aspect gives her that fast, precocious attitude that we need at the moment and then she may well continue improving as she gets older.”

Damian Lane will be instructed to ride Kiko ‘neutral’ from barrier four and keep her in a relaxed rhythm for as long as possible, according to Conlan.
He said Kiko has shown enough speed at home to take up a prominent position in the run and that she is all but certain to press on towards January’s R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic if she produces a forward showing on Saturday.
“It’s (Magic Millions) seven weeks away from Saturday and if she (Kiko) proves she’s up to the standard required to run in a race of that calibre she will be going there (Gold Coast) but her performance will define what plans we make,” Conlan said.
Doll to debut
Marincanto Doll will also represent Conlan’s stable in the Merson Cooper after the daughter of Pride Of Dubai pleased in a Caulfield jump-out on November 16.
Pride Of Dubai | Standing at Coolmore Stud
He said Marincanto Doll, like Kiko, has earned the right to prove herself pre-Christmas, saying that he isn’t stepping the duo out in the hope of attracting new clientele.
“She’s (Marincanto Doll) a very nice filly, she’s completely straightforward, has a great attitude toward everything, is very relaxed and copes with everything you put before her,” Conlan said.
“She’s in a similar position to Kiko, she hasn’t been squeezed too hard and she has got to this level under her own steam.
“She’s (Marincanto Doll) in a similar position to Kiko, she hasn’t been squeezed too hard and she has got to this level under her own steam." - Jim Conlan
“The plan will be to ride her in a similar fashion (to Kiko) but she has shown a bit of toe out of the gates and will put herself up on the speed. So, I expect a very forward performance from her on Saturday.”
A $20,000 2020 Inglis Australian Weanling Sale purchase by Future Horse, Marincanto Doll is out of a half-sister to G1 Vinery Stud S. winner Mirjulisa Lass (Danasinga), making her a half-sister to G3 Thoroughbred Club S. runner-up New York Baby (Written Tycoon).

G1 HKJC Stewards' Cup winner Seasons Bloom (Captain Sonador) and G2 QTC Cup hero Pembleton (Marauding {NZ}) feature in this family.
Conlan reflects on Caulfield closure
Conlan, who started his career with legendary former Caulfield-based horseman Colin Little as an 18-year-old in 1978 was sad to see ‘The Heath’ close as a training complex this week despite vacating his boxes to Peter Moody back in 2001.
Jim Conlan
He holds fond memories of his eight-year tenure from 1993 to 2001 as a member of the iconic trainers' tower, particularly the latter years which were bolstered by star mare Miss Pennymoney. She was placed in multiple Caulfield features such as the G1 CF Orr S., G1 Futurity S., G1 Oakleigh Plate and the G3 Blue Diamond Prelude (Fillies) on debut.
The Nick Turnbull-owned mare was Conlan’s first top-flight winner when beating Redoute’s Choice in the G1 Australia S. at Moonee Valley in 2000 before adding the G1 Newmarket H. at Flemington to her resume the following year.
“Caulfield was the most profitable time in my life, financially, it was a lot of fun there, everyone seemed to get on very well for whatever reason, and we just realised that we had to just make it work as going in every day would’ve been quite unpleasant,” Conlan said.
"Caulfield was the most profitable time in my life, financially, it was a lot of fun there, everyone seemed to get on very well for whatever reason." - Jim Conlan
“While it is disappointing Caulfield is closing, I remember riding a horse and leading another two blocks from Caulfield when I started with Colin (Little) in 1978 and now you wouldn’t do it in a fit with all of the traffic around.”
While 20 years removed from his Caulfield ‘heydays’ a bold showing from Kiko on Saturday would take Conlan on a trip down memory lane.
“She (Miss Pennymoney) was a fantastic mare for us, it was such a great time, and Nick’s (Turnbull) just been a beauty, he’s a good mate of mine who has been around since my mid-20s and to share a win on Saturday (with Kiko) would be great,” Conlan said.

Sea The Stars foal on top at Tattersalls Day 2
Written by
Chris McGrath
6 min read
Both the quality and the quantity were hiked, but the energy remained pretty seamless on the second day of the Tattersalls December Foal Sale. Once again business far surpassed the equivalent session last year, no surprise by this stage despite the unexpected resilience of that market, and measured up pretty closely to the tempo recorded in the pre-COVID innocence of the 2019 Sale.
At A Glance
•
Turnover soared by 32 per cent to 9,225,000 gns (AU$17.8 million) from 7,014,800 gns (AU$13.6 million), also eclipsing the 8,532,700 gns (AU$16.5 million) banked in 2019.
•
With a bigger catalogue for this session, however, that translated into an average 39,225 gns (AU$76,000), up 16 per cent from 33,888 gns (AU$66,000) last year while just shy of 40,826 gns (AU$79,000) in 2019.
•
The median rallied to 30,000 gns (AU$58,000) from 25,000 gns (AU$48,000), not quite matching 33,000 gns (AU$64,000) in 2019.
•
A Sea The Stars (Ire) filly topped the day's trade at 225,000 gns (AU$420,000) purchased by Blandford Bloodstock's Richard Brown.
The Thought That Counts
It's not often that the top price of the day looks equally good business for buyer and vendor alike, but that was arguably the case with the Sea The Stars (Ire) filly who topped the day's trade at 225,000 gns (AU$420,000).
After all, her sire stands at €150,000 (AU$236,000) and you can put an additional premium on foaling and raising a healthy foal to stride out as purposefully as did Lot 691. To that extent, the clients of purchaser Richard Brown are entitled to feel that their investment looks very fair value as things stand. For Whatton Manor Stud, even so, this was an authentic “touch”, as the foal-share launch of a very young mare.
“It's quite a good story,” explained Ed Player. “We'd had a good yearling sale, and we always say to Richard that if he sees a future broodmare prospect anywhere, that we are always in the market.
“We'd had a good yearling sale, and we always say to Richard that if he sees a future broodmare prospect anywhere, that we are always in the market." - Ed Player
"And he found this lovely filly in Book 3 from Newsells, and he immediately thought, 'I'll have some of that money back off the Players!' So we bought her for 20,000 gns (AU$37,000) and sent her to Mark Johnston. He thought she was quite useful, but she got injured after one run. We retired her, and it has now all come full circle.”
Reflecting on her elite maiden cover, Player noted that Best Terms (GB) (Exceed And Excel) had promptly produced Star Terms (GB) by Sea The Stars to become a Group 1-placed Listed winner, among plenty of other stakes action.
“The pedigree was very current,” he reasoned. “Things were happening in the family, and she's a lovely individual, so we thought we had better give her the best chance we could. Obviously the Sea The Stars filly out of Best Terms topped Book 1 at 1,500,000 gns (AU$2.8 million), so other people are thinking that works pretty nicely as well.
Ed Player | Image courtesy of Tattersalls
“Sadly, the mare is not in foal, but we'll enjoy the moment. We're absolutely over the moon, flabbergasted. She'd been very popular, vetted a lot of times, and we hoped she'd make up to the 200,000 gns (AU$373,000) mark. But to actually get it, we couldn't be happier.”
French Target Petches Draft
This auction owes much of its impetus to pinhookers but this was a day when plenty of end-users saw the merit of “cutting out the middle man”. Among them was a familiar face to the Australian market, Arthur Hoyeau, who gave 110,000 gns (AU$213,000) for a filly from the first crop of Magna Grecia (Ire) (Lot 595). This is a new strategy for the French agent, whose clients have clearly decided that a year's keep will ultimately represent a saving.
Arthur Hoyeau | Image courtesy of Tattersalls
“She is to race, she'll go to the owner's farm in France,” Hoyeau explained. “We were looking for fillies, it's been tough to buy yearlings this year so we're trying to find a bit of value, to buy some foals and get them into the system.
"They may eventually be bred from, we'll have to see how good they are, but buying as foals is really a response to the strength of the yearling market more than anything. This is a lovely, scopey filly, a good mover, with a good mix of (grandsire) Invincible Spirit and (damsire) Fastnet Rock.”
Consigned by Petches Farm, all three of the farm's draft in this session will cross the Channel, as Hoyeau also gave 45,000 gns (AU$84,000) for its Calyx (GB) filly (Lot 597) while Fairway Partners went to 80,000 gns (AU$150,000) for the colt offered in between, a Masar (Ire) half-brother (Lot 596) to the stakes-placed dam of those hardy stayers Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Sir Ron Priestley (GB) (Australia {GB}).
Lot 595 - Magna Grecia (Ire) x She's So Flawless (Ire) (filly) purchased by Arthur Hoyeau | Image courtesy of Tattersalls
Simon Venner, whose father Paul owns the farm, was delighted with their export trade. “The Magna Grecia filly has been stunning since day one, knockout, very straightforward,” he said. “We got her into prep and she never put a foot wrong. Every time she came out of the box, she just marched around.
“The Calyx has a lovely temperament, again she just came out and walked, just lovely and relaxed.”
“The Calyx (Lot 597) has a lovely temperament, again she just came out and walked, just lovely and relaxed.” - Simon Venner
Magna Grecia, incidentally, returned another handsome yield on his €22,500 (AU$35,500) start-up fee when Tom Malone gave 100,000 gns (AU$187,000) for Lot 649, a March colt from Glashare House Stud.
Another playing a longer game was Harry Fowler in giving 105,000 gns (AU$196,000) for the first foal, a filly by Coolmore's soaraway Wootton Bassett (GB), out of Italian Listed winner Lorelei Rock (Ire) (Camacho {GB}) on behalf of Alex Frost's Ladyswood Stud.
“Ladyswood is looking for some fillies to race, and we loved this one, she has a great action,” Fowler said after signing the docket for Lot 668.

“The mare was fourth in a Group 2 in Ireland, she was class, and she was early type: she won on her debut, in the May of her 2-year-old season. Alex is looking for a couple of fillies to go back and join the broodmare band, if they are good enough.”

G2 Zipping Classic, $750,000, 2400m
Sound (Ger) (Lando {Ger}) won this race last year and 12 months later is in similar form. He was game last time out but faces the same G2 Queen Elizabeth S. rival here with Warning (Declaration Of War {USA}) racing in such good form.
Wentwood (GB) (Pour Moi {Ire}) and Dr Drill (GB) (Dansili {GB}) were also good in that race whilst Lunar Flare (Fiorente {Ire}) had no hope given the way the race was run.
They do have G1 Melbourne Cup form to take on here with Spanish Mission (USA) (Noble Mission {GB}) a brave third behind two of Australia's best.
The tough Silent Sovereign (Dalakhani {Ire}) backs up from a tough win last Saturday and is rarely far away.
G2 Sandown Guineas, $300,000, 1600m
Port Louis (Maurice {Jpn}), Blushing Tycoon (Written Tycoon) and Cardinal Gem (Choisir) all come off good Melbourne Cup Week runs, the former running into Fangirl (Sebring) at his first crack at the mile whilst Port Louis was only just beaten by Bend The Knee (Snitzel) over 1400 metres.
Blushing Tycoon comes back in distance but is hard fit and honest whilst his stable mate Reigate (Tavistock {NZ}) was a smart debut winner. Cardinal Gem was picking up nicely late having got a long way back in the same race contested by Port Louis.
Sydney visitor Festival Dancer (Choisir) was still green when winning the G3 Spring S. but it was a dominant performance and she has again drawn well.
Chartres (Toronado {Ire}) looks to be the up-and-comer of the field, most impressive swamping his rivals from the rear on Cranbourne Cup Day. He was just second-up on that occasion and has won two of his first four starts.
G3 Summoned S., $200,000, 1600m
There is some Group 1 form here with Quantum Mechanic (Deep Field) contesting the G1 Cantala S. and the G1 Toorak H. at her last two starts, not disgraced in either - whilst Steinem (GB) (Frankel {GB}) was good late off a slow start in the G1 Empire Rose S.
Tricky Gal (Magic Albert) has been racing well without the best of fortune in Sydney and it was good to see Paul's Regret (Canford Cliffs {Ire}) with a bit of luck in running back to her best on Cranbourne Cup Day.
Belle Plaisir (NZ) (Proisir), Brazen Song (Brazen Beau), Good And Proper (Shooting To Win), Agreeable (Sebring) have all been in good form whilst Groovy Kinda Love (Smart Missile) was not suited by the way the race was run at Flemington last time out, and she was right in the market there.
G3 Eclipse S., $200,000, 1800m
Crowd favourite So Si Bon (So You Think {NZ}) attempts to become the first horse since So Vague (USA) (Empery {USA}) to win this race in consecutive years. He appears to be going just as well this time around and is a four times Caulfield winner.
Defibrillate (NZ) (Shocking) has had excuses at his last couple and he is unbeaten over the Caulfield 1800 metres whilst Hangman (Ire) (Windsor Knot {Ire}) has also displayed a definite liking for the track.
South Australian visitors Regalo Di Gaetano (Supreme Class), Royal Mile (Danerich) are in flying form and also racing well is Our Playboy (Sebring) who has drawn a better gate having been good to the line in the Listed Cranbourne Cup. Starelle (More Than Ready {USA}) rarely runs a bad race.
G3 Kevin Heffernan S., $200,000, 1400m
Streets Of Avalon (Magnus) was not far away in this race last year and seems to be going a bit better this time around... and three of his last four runs have been in Group 1 company.
The G3 Chatham S. is a major form reference for this with its winners Age Of Chivalry (NZ) (He's Remarkable {NZ}) racing again since but striking heavy conditions. Crosshaven (Smart Missile) and Sinawann (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) were both good in the same race, the latter at his first local outing.
I Am Superman (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) was luckless in the Classique Legend last start whilst Riddle Me That (Deep Field) was solid in the Listed Sale Cup.
Listed Merson Cooper S., $160,000, 1000m
Just two of these youngsters have been to the track before with Brereton (Zoustar) impressive claiming the G3 Maribyrnong Plate victory whilst Valenconi (Nicconi) was a solid Cranbourne third behind a nice type at debut.
Kumicho (Street Boss {USA}), Ebhaar (I Am Invincible) and Moko (Impending) are all either trial or jump-out winners and each are well-related - Kumicho being out of a half-sister to the recent G1 Canadian International winner Walton Street (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) winner, Ebhaar being out of a three-quarter sister to Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock) and Moko from the debut crop of her sire being a daughter of the stakes winner Zubbaya (Dubawi {Ire}).
Several other nice families are represented amongst the debutants - Silvanito (Shooting To Win) is a grandson of the Group 1 mare Ancient Song (Canny Lad), Kiko (Capitalist) is a half-sister to the G3 Del Mar Native Diver S. winner Azul Coast (USA) (Super Saver {USA}), Maricanto Doll (Pride Of Dubai) is a half-sister to the recent G3 placegetter New York Baby (Written Tycoon) and Yaltara (I Am Invincible) is a half-sister to the stakes winners Khulaasa (Epaulette) and Bulbula (Shamardal {USA}).
Listed Sandown Cup, $160,000, 3200m
A lineup of tough stayers with the exciting up-and-comer True Marvel (Fr) (Masked Marvel {GB}) is bound to have plenty of fans on the back of his runaway 16l victory over 3800 metres at Moonee Valley a couple of weeks ago.
Topweight Sweet Thomas (Ger) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}) has a touch of staying class, hence his impost of 4kg more than the next horse. He was not far away when finishing off well for fourth in this race last year.
Monmouth (Pendragon {NZ}) was also here 12 months ago, finishing sixth though he comes off a better lead-up run this time around.
Accountability (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is racing in fine form whilst Into Rio (NZ) (Zacinto {GB}) and Lion's Share (Animal Kingdom {USA}) have also been consistent of late.
Listed Twilight Glow S., $160,000, 1400m
Decent Raine (Dissident) was also amongst the G2 Sandown Guineas noms but takes her place against her own sex here having impressed with a dominant performance at Ballarat last weekend.
Star Of Chaos (Zoustar) was no match for the exciting Espiona (Extreme Choice) at Flemington but she was brave off a wide run and can atone. Riduna (Fastnet Rock) comes through that same race but has run again since, far from disgraced behind the Sandown Guineas contestant Chartres (Toronado {Ire}) at Mornington.
Lavish Girl (Xtravagant {NZ}) took on some smart boys in the Listed Springtime S. at Flemington and was not far away. Spinning (Pierro) has also run some fair races in black-type company.
There are a few here having their first crack at stakes company, each showing promise... Lady Of Honour (No Nay Never {USA}) too strong on pace at her last two, Inviva (Rich Enuff) coming off a very easy Tatura maiden victory, Allegretta (Pierro) racing clear first-up and Funky Me (Fighting Sun) who was very good off a slow start at Sandown. Birthday Suit (Better Than Ready) is still a maiden but a promising one.
Listed Doveton S., $160,000, 1000m
Enthaar (Written Tycoon) has a tricky gate to contend with again taking on the boys but her form around some of the smart 2-year-olds of last season reads well.
She is one of several runners boasting very good 1000 metre records with Prezado (Denman) and Shamino (Shamus Award) six-time winners at the trip whilst Curran (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) did not quite see out a longer journey last time out.
He's A Balter (Spirit Of Boom) had post race issues (EIPH) after his latest run but was in flying form previously whilst Varda (Lonhro) have also been in consistent form.
Streetcar Stranger (Stratum) had excuses when resuming and generally races well second-up as does Excess Funds (Rubick) who was good in a handy race when resuming.

G1 Winterbottom S., $1,000,000, 1200m
On the back of his stellar form, Elite Street (Street Boss {USA}) is a deserved favourite in this feature which he won in determined style last year.
He is attempting to become the first horse since Hardrada (Marooned {GB}) and just the fourth horse overall to win consecutive Winterbottoms and whilst last year he was stepping up from benchmark victories, this time he has won a Listed event and two Group 3 races in the lead-up.
Five of the horses behind him last year again line-up on Saturday - Rock Magic (Redoute's Choice) a close-up third in 2021 and still racing well whilst Flirtini (Artie Schiller {USA}) was on the heels of the placegetters and her recent form is better than it looks on paper.
Red Can Man (Gingerbread Man) was also close-up last year and he boasts excellent second-up form. Stageman (Written Tycoon) was luckless last time out and was also good last year whilst Indian Pacific (Zoustar) was not disgraced last year and has been in consistent form.
New challengers come from Graceful Girl (Nicconi) who is yet to taste defeat from four starts at the 1200 metres and the up-and-comer Wilchino (Maschino) who has impressed winning six in a row.
Listed Japan Racing Association Trophy, $125,000, 2100m
The Listed Ascot Gold Cup won by Midnight Blue (So You Think {NZ}) is the main form reference here and that horse racing in the Peters' cerise and white should again prove hard to beat.
Attempting to turn the tables on the gelding will be fellow So You Think (NZ) gelding Bad Wolf who was a game second in that same race in which Poulton le Sands (Camelot {GB}) was a nice fifth weaving through the field late. Just in front of him was the honest Stafford's Lad (Demerit).
And behind those horses - Taxagano (Rogano), Marocchino (Maschino), Media Baron (Written Tycoon) and Temptacion (All Too Hard).
Meanwhile Dig Deep (Deep Field) drops in class having contested last weekend's G1 Railway S.

G3 Festival S., $160,000, 1500m
Ellsberg (Spill The Beans) was less than 3l from the winner in the good form-race that was the Golden Eagle and he boasts an excellent Rosehill record.
The Hunter is a major form reference for this race with Bandersnatch (Casino Prince) and Gem Song (Your Song). Stockman (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) and Countofmontecristo (NZ) (Echoes Of Heaven) both got a bit too far back in running that day whilst Prime Candidate (Denman) worked hard.
Brutality (Shamus Award) was an improver second-up whilst Art Cadeau (Artie Schiller {USA}) was trapped wide as favourite in the Goulburn Cup which was won in tough style by Al Mah Haha (Al Maher).
Order Again (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}) has been beaten only once in five starts at the trip.
Listed ATC Cup, $140,000, 2000m
A small but even field with every runner able to lay some claims. A couple come through The Gong - Blue Soldier (USA) (War Front {USA}) solid there whilst racing as though looking for more ground (which he gets here) whilst Soldier Of Love (Mawingo {Ger}) will also find this longer trip more to his liking.
Polly Grey (NZ) (Azamour {Ire}) is only second-up but is another suited up in distance whilst Kiss The Bride (NZ) (Savabeel) boasts solid 2000 metre form. By the same sire is Mightybeel (NZ) (Savabeel) who has been racing in fine form.
The imported 5-year-old Grove Ferry (Ire) (Excelebration {Ire}) was a marked improver at only his second local outing.
Listed Starlight S., $140,000, 1100m
Southern Lad (Ocean Park {NZ}) does seem to race a bit below his best at Rosehill but he went to the paddock a winner and returned as one with his overall strike rate being very good.
Queenslander Tambo's Mate (Mossman) is racing in flying form and also promising is Edison (Fastnet Rock) who has been trialling very well in preparation for his return to the track.
Written Beauty (Written Tycoon) and Juan Diva (Snitzel) both come off good Flemington runs whilst Snapdancer (Choisir) has good fresh form and has trialled nicely.

Listed Recognition S., $130,000, 1400m
Silvera (High Chaparral {Ire}) is capable of second-up improvement.
Niccanova (Nicconi) is another with good second-up form and The Harrovian (Fastnet Rock) flies fresh and at this trip. Ballistic Boy (Smart Missile) has been kept fresh since winning two in a row at Doomben and Barney's Law (Zoustar) can make his own luck on pace from a good gate.
Listed Eureka Stud Classic Fillies and Mares, $130,000, 1200m
Tony Gollan plays a big hand here with four acceptors - Lyrical Girl (Your Song), Glitter Strip (Street Boss {USA}), Starosa (Starspangledbanner) and Miami Fleiss (Spirit Of Boom). The latter would be an apt winner considering the name of the race!
Wandabaa (Wandjina) looks nicely primed having improved at each run this time in and Kisukano (Bel Esprit) strips fitter for a good first-up effort. Modelka (Rothesay) and Tara Jasmine (Cowboy Blue) have been excellent working their way through the classes and Fleet Dove (Not A Single Doubt) just keeps racing well.
Winning Rupert's full sister Tycoon Evie (Written Tycoon) was a determined winner second-up and whilst she has a tricky gate to contend with, she does boast excellent 1200 metre form.
Palaisapan (So You Think {NZ}) is an emergency racing well.
Morphettville: Listed City Of Marion S., $107,250, 1200m
Rock The Ring (Reward For Effort) is looking to honour his sire who died during the week. A Morphettville specialist, he has won all three starts all at the track and all in easy fashion. Reward for Effort is also represented by Outlaws Revenge who was good when resuming.
Extra Time (Shooting To Win) got too far back last time but he also races well at his home track as does his stablemate Another Award (Shamus Award). Another local in Second Slip (NZ) (Alamosa {NZ}) loves the 1200 metres whilst Trip (Good Journey {USA}) has been quickly into form this preparation whilst topweight Free Of Debt (Unencumbered) is hard fit.
Parsifal (NZ) (Darci Brahma {NZ}) and Open Minded (NZ) (Jimmy Choux {NZ}) bring solid Melbourne form to the race and Diamonds (Rich Enuff) looked to have a bit in hand last time out.

G3 Eagle Technology S., NZ$90,000, 1600m
Demonetization (an All Too Hard half-brother to Midnight Special by So You Think {NZ} who later in the day tackles black-type company in Perth) bolted in second-up and will be further improved.
Royal Performer (GB) (Medicean {GB}) is still racing well at nine and Hypnos (NZ) (Reliable Man {GB}) looks ready for another win having shown plenty of heart when an on-pace second in the G2 Tauranga S. third-up.
Paisley Park (NZ) (Azamour {Ire}) overcame trouble in running to record a gutsy first-up win and it was good to see the Group 1 horse The Mitigator (Master Of Design) back in winning form last time out.
Les Crayeres (NZ) (a Redoute's Choice from the prolific Richebourg {NZ} by Vice Regal {NZ} family) has been good winning five of 10 so far.
Listed Eagle Memorial 3YO, NZ$70,000, 1500m
Six of the nine runners here are last-start winners including Pareanui Bay (NZ) (Lonhro) has impressed winning his first two. La Crique (NZ) (Vadamos {Fr}) and La Bella Beals (Star Turn) are also shooting for hat-tricks.
Yes We Khan (NZ) (Mongolian Khan) found the line well at just his second outing as did Aquacade (NZ) (Dundeel {NZ}).
The well-related Just Dance (NZ) (a Tavistock {NZ} daughter of the Group 1 mare Stolen Dance {NZ} by Alamosa {NZ}) will also have fans on the strength of her debut victory.
Listed Wanganui Cup, NZ$60,000, 2040m
Marietta Lane (NZ) (Zed {NZ}) was no match for House Of Cartier (Alamosa {NZ}) last start but was game in defeat and that form looks good. Sir Nate (NZ) (Nadeem) was just behind Marietta Lane two starts back, since then finishing off strongly for a second despite a rise in weight.
Bully Boy (NZ) (Rock 'N' Pop) was coming along nicely before failing on rain affected going last start and Skyphyta (NZ) (Pierro) was an improver at his most recent outing.
Prince Leo (NZ) (Jimmy Choux {NZ}) and Fiddyafortnight (NZ) (Niagara) are racing well and Bonny Ezra (NZ) (Road To Rock) has trialled well since finishing off nicely in the Listed Gold Cup.

Scone open for refuge
The Scone Race Club has opened its raceday stalls for anyone in the region who needs to move their horses to higher ground to avoid flooding and heavy rainfall.
Akecheta wins Wodonga Cup
The Peter Moody-trained Akecheta (So You Think {NZ}) reigned supreme in Friday’s $100,000 Wodonga Gold Cup on a testing Heavy 10 surface.
Ridden by Jason Benbow, Akecheta finished 0.2l ahead of the Michael Moroney Rainbow Thief (NZ) (Rock ‘N’ Pop) and 0.3l of Mitchell Freedman-trained top weight Ho Ho Khan (NZ) (Makfi {GB}) in the 1590-metre feature.
Enthaar set to star
David Eustace expects speedy filly Enthaar (Written Tycoon) to display her newfound ‘controlled brilliance’ in Saturday’s Listed Doveton S. at Caulfield.
Eustace, who trains Enthaar in partnership with Ciaron Maher, said the boom Emirates Park-owned filly has learned to harness her speed at home and has improved since finishing third behind a match fit Profiteer (Capitalist)at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.
Enthaar
“The draws (barrier 11) obviously not ideal but she can easily get across although at the same time we don’t want to rush and have her overdo it early,” Eustace told RSN.
“So, with a good ride I expect her to run really well but she hasn’t improved much since she was a 2-year-old as she was more mature than her rivals early on but those performances are good enough for her to win with 54kgs on Saturday.”
Freedman sends Warning to rivals
Sam Freedman has warned rivals about the quality of proven stayer Warning (Declaration Of War {USA}) ahead of Saturday’s G2 Zipping Classic at Caulfield.
Freedman, who trains the G1 Victoria Derby hero in partnership with his father Anthony, said front-running tactics will again be deployed after they proved a winning move in the G3 Queen Elizabeth S. at Flemington on Stakes Day.
Warning
“If that horse (Spanish Mission) turns up at his best, then we probably are racing for second, but the Melbourne Cup can be quite taxing, and we’ve seen plenty of imports run a very good race first-up off the plane and then they can sometimes regress,” Freedman told Racenet.
“Our horse is in terrific form, we couldn’t be happier with him, and we’re there to give him a run for his money.”
Trip to suit Soldier
David Payne has decided to test Blue Soldier’s (USA) (War Front {USA}) credentials on the back-up in Saturday’s Listed ATC Cup at Rosehill.
The 5-year-old, who finished 3.75l sixth behind high-class galloper in the $1 million The Gong is crying out for 2000 metres, according to Payne.
“We’ve worked him out. I think he’s going to be a much better horse over more ground so the 2000 metres will suit him this weekend,” Payne told Racenet.
“I think he’s just looking for the 2000 metres after a very good run in The Gong. He’ll go to this race now then head out for a spell.”
Wet remains a worry
Tim Donnelly is hoping the wet weather forecast doesn’t put a dampener on the undefeated record of Participator (NZ) (Contributer {Ire}) when he steps out in Saturday’s TAB Highway H. at Rosehill.
The NZ$95,000 2020 New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale graduate has won both of his starts for the Wagga Wagga-based horseman but will meet a Heavy surface for the first time this weekend.
“He is out of a More Than Ready mare, so that gives me a little bit of confidence (that he will handle it) but you don’t really know until they are put under pressure under race conditions,” Donnelly said.
“If it was a Good track, I would be very confident. I think he has got a lot of improvement in him from his previous start.”
Eptimum continues revival
Former Hong Kong galloper Eptimum (Snitzel) continued the resurrection of his racing career when taking out the Clare Memorial Central Otago Cup at Cromwell on Friday.
The 7-year-old gelding was quick out of the gates and settled outside leader Spring Blossom (Epaulette) before kicking clear and withstanding the late challenge of Goodanya (NZ) (Zacinto {GB}) to prevail by 0.75l.
Eptimum | Image courtesy of NZ Racing Desk
“I knew he was pretty smart, but to see him win today was great. I will see how he comes through today and if we don’t have any rain, I might look at Sunday,” trainer John Blackadder said.
“He will probably head to something like the (Listed) Hazlett at Wingatui on Boxing Day.”
Djelo tops Auctav November Sale
Winning 3-year-old gelding Djelo (Fr) (Montmartre {Fr}) brought top billing at Wednesday’s Auctav November Sale when knocked down to bloodstock agent Guy Petit for €140,000 (AU$220,000).
“We are delighted with the great sale of Djelo, we could see that the Auctav concept had really been successful because of its flexibly between monthly sales, wild cards and flash sales,” Auctav Managing Director Arnaud Angeliaume told TDN Europe.
Djelo (Fr) | Image courtesy of Auctav
“The Auctav app, launched last week, had its first test. It worked well in real time and we are really very happy with this innovation which will further facilitate the customer experience.”

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we will aim to give you something to follow
On Saturday, we will kickstart proceedings in the opening event at Te Aroha with a Te Akau Racing filly before heading back across the Tasman to Rosehill to watch a daughter of a Group 1-winning sprinter step out on debut.
We will round out the day at Caulfield in the opening event on their Zipping Classic program with an Emirates Park-owned filly.
Te Aroha, Race 1, 10.30am AEDT (12.30pm local), Stallion Service Scheme Mdn, $20,000,1100m
I Choose You, 2-year-old filly (I Am Invincible x Choose {Starcraft {NZ}})
Te Akau Racing and Jamie Richards will lift the curtain on a daughter of I Am Invincible, who was acquired by David Ellis and Andrew Williams Bloodstock (FBAA) for $500,000 at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
The aptly named I Choose You was last seen winning an 800-metre trial on a Dead 6 surface at Matamata in a time of 48.45s after finishing second in her first trial on September 21.

Emilia Romagna, 2-year-old filly (Pierro x Griante {Good Journey {USA}})
The Bjorn Baker-trained Emilia Romagna looks forward enough to fire on debut after finish second by 0.5l and 0.2l in two trials to date. She has drawn barrier eight and will be partnered by Jason Collett.
Bred by David Brideoake, Brendan Lindsay and Jo Lindsay and purchase by Spendthrift Australia for $550,000 at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Emilia Romagna is out of G1 The Galaxy H. winner Griante.
G1 WATC Derby winner Grand Journey (Good Journey {USA}) and G1 Greyville Golden Slipper S. runner-up Almashooqa (Bernardini {USA}) feature in this family.

Ebhaar, 2-year-old filly (I Am Invincible x Maroon Bay {Exceed And Excel})
Peter and Paul Snowden are set to unveil Ebhaar here on debut after the well-related juvenile won a Randwick trial impressively on October 29.
She has since won a Flemington jump-out and will be required to break from barrier nine of 11 here.
Bred and retained by Emirates Park, Ebhaar is a half-sister to G3 Blue Diamond Prelude (Colts and Geldings) runner-up Shotmaker (Shooting To Win) .
She is out of Maroon Bay (Exceed And Excel), who is a half-sister to dual Hemisphere Group 1-winning sprinter Merchant Navy and G2 Roman Consul S. winner Jolie Bay (Fastnet Rock).
Looking Back
Our first selection Speak Now (Star Witness) finished second on debut at Canberra. Our second selection Pretty Amazing (American Pharoah {USA}) was a scratching whilst our third selection Rights Of Man (Snitzel) was a respectable third.
