Looking Ahead - January 19

4 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

On Wednesday, we will kick things off in the fifth event at Ipswich with a David Vandyke debutant before turning our attention to a daughter of Shalaa (Ire) from the family of Alinghi (Encosta De Lago) at Newcastle soon after.

We will round out the day in the opening race at Sandown with a progressive Archie Alexander-trained filly by Real Impact (Jpn).

Ipswich, Race 5, 4.23pm AEDT (3.23pm local), Schweppes Mdn H., $37,000, 1200m

Dubai Dee, 3-year-old filly (Pride Of Dubai x Fiery Dee {Fraar {USA}})

The David Vandyke-trained Dubai Dee steps out on debut after three respectable trials thus far. The most recent of those resulting in a second-placing behind Imposing Prince (Manhattan Rain) over 1200 metres at Deagon on December 30.

She is set to jump from barrier 10 of 13 and will be partnered by leading local hoop Ryan Maloney.

A $170,000 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale purchase by Ontrack Thoroughbreds via the draft of River Junction, Dubai Dee is a half-sister to the five-time Group-placed Looks Like The Cat (Husson {Arg}).

The duo’s dam Fiery Dee is a half-sister to the Group 3-winning, G2 Wakeful S.-placed Silent Surround (Face Value), herself the dam of Group 3-winning Silent Sovereign (Dalakhani {Ire}) and the Listed-winning Silent Command (Commands).

Fiery Dee’s grandam Ma Vie (NZ) (Sir Tristram {Ire}) is responsible for the Group 2-winning and three-time Group 1-placed Station Hand (Rancher).

Newcastle, Race 3, 3.30pm AEDT, Reward Hospitality F&M Mdn H., $35,000, 1400m

Jawaani, 3-year-old filly (Shalaa {Ire} x Lady Moura {Redoute’s Choice})

The Chris Waller-trained Jawaani looks forward enough to figure on debut after five trials to date. She has gone to a new level in her two most recent trials, finishing 0.5l second and 1.2l fourth over 900 metres and 1030 metres respectably.

Tommy Berry has been booked to ride Jawaani, who has drawn to get every chance from barrier four of 12.

A $325,000 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase by Waltrin Pty Ltd from the draft of Arrowfield Stud, Jawaani is out of dual winner, Lady Moura, herself a sister to the Group 3-winning, G1 Blue Diamond S.-placed Beneteau.

Sandown, Race 1, 3.40pm AEDT, Ladbroke It! Plate, $50,000, 1200m

Masako, 3-year-old filly (Real Impact {Jpn} x Absolute Empress {Conatus})

The Archie Alexander-trained Masako is edging closer to a maiden victory after finishing second in both of her two career starts to date.

She stays at 1200 metres after only being beaten 0.5l at Cranbourne on January 2 and should take a power of beating in this contest, with fitness and race experience on her side.

A $36,000 2020 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale purchase by Alexander Racing and Rodgers Bloodstock via the draft of Baramul Stud, Masako is out of three-time winner Absolute Empress, herself a daughter of G2 Magic Night S. third-placegetter Breezer (Royal Academy {USA}).
