Looking Ahead - March 6

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

We’re looking to Sale and a Frosted (USA) gelding scratched during the week for our first Sunday selection, it's then up to the Sunshine Coast to a Shamus Award filly in an all-girls affair and onto a Rubick horse on a winning streak.

Sale, Race 4, 3.05pm AEDT, Bennett Electrical Mdn Plate, $35,000, 1100m

Glacier Grey, 3-year-old gelding (Frosted {USA} x Silken Song {Unbridled’s Song {USA}})

Scratched from earlier in the week he is a half to nine winners, each of the dam’s foals to race saluting, including Fastnet Rock pair Electric Fusion who was Group 1-placed and Refer, placing also in a Listed race.

A savvy buy for trainer Julius Sandhu at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale for $15,000 from the draft of Blue Gum Farm, Glacier Grey has been reasonable in competitive, large Cranbourne jump-outs.

Beau Mertens has the ride from the widest barrier.

Sunshine Coast, Race 6, 4.25pm AEDT (3.25pm local), All Fencing Sunshine Coast Fillies And Mares Class 1 H., $24,000, 1200m

Amity Gal, 3-year-old filly (Shamus Award x Meerlust {Johannesburg {USA}})

The full sister to G1 Queensland Oaks winner Duais, and a half-sister to G3 Sunshine Coast Guineas winner Baccarat Baby (Casino Prince) pops up here for David Vandyke with Brad Stewart riding.

Shamus Award | Standing at Rosemont Stud

She has two starts to her name for a win and a place, and two winning trials, one of those just a fortnight ago. Her win came on Heavy ground at this track and she can be expected to go to the front in this and let them try to catch her.

Sunshine Coast, Race 8, 5.45pm AEDT (4.45pm local), Martin Collins Australia Open H., $75,000, 1000m

Contemptuous, 5-year-old horse (Rubick x Contempt {Commands})

Only out of the placings once from 11 starts and with six wins to his name, this horse for Steven O’Dea and Matthew Hoysted progressed through the grades last prep and is first-up here. He has won on Soft ground but has only been tried once on a Heavy track for a third-placing.

Apprentice Jaden Lloyd rides here having won on him at his last two starts.

He was a $100,000 Magic Millions graduate from the Coolmore Stud draft. Half-sister Zalini (Nicconi) opened her account last month at her third start. He is from the same family as Group 1 star Dracula (Quest For Fame {GB}).

Looking Back

From our selections for Saturday, Millane (Zoustar) won impressively at Flemington, while Well In Sight (Shalaa {Ire}) was well-beaten. Custodian (Shalaa {Ire}) was scratched from Royal Randwick's meeting.
