Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Friday, we take a look at a well-related debutant colt at Goulburn and a beautifully bred filly at Cranbourne that’s a half-sister to Yankee Rose (All American). On the Sunshine Coast, we give some love to an unraced gelding who’s a half-brother to a stakes winner.
Goulburn, Race 6, 3.40pm AEDT, Goulburn Hay Supplies Mdn, $24,000, 1000m
Super Extreme, 3-year-old colt (Extreme Choice x Super Lacuna {Grand Lodge {USA}})
This unraced colt for Darby Racing is trained at Randwick by Mark Newnham, so he’s having a confidence-builder in this, his first race. He won his last trial at home in mid-February, having climbed steadily through his preparation with two previous trials.
Super Extreme is from that dynamic first crop of Extreme Choice, and he’s from the Grand Lodge (USA) mare Super Lacuna. She won the Listed Gold Bracelet on the Gold Coast, and she was third in the G3 Frank Packer Plate.

This is a very useful family, with Super Lacuna a half-sister to the Macau S. winner Hesitates (Commands), but also the dams of both Scarlet Rain (Manhattan Rain), who won the G2 Sweet Embrace S., and Military Zone (Epaulette), a dual Group 3 winner. Super Extreme cost just $5000 when sold by Bowness Stud at the 2020 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale. He sold to Darby Racing and Will Johnson Bloodstock.
Cranbourne, Race 1, 6.15pm AEDT, Star News Group 2YO Mdn, $35,000, 1200m
New York Rose, 2-year-old filly (Redoute’s Choice x Condesaar {Xaar {GB}})
There will be few better-bred fillies going around on Friday than this one, the 2-year-old debutante New York Rose. She is a half-sister to the Champion 2-year-old and Champion 3-year-old Yankee Rose (All American), who was a dual Group 1 winner, plus she's also a full sister to the Listed Kembla Grange Classic winner Miravalle (Redoute's Choice). This is also the family of the closely related Isoptope (Deep Field).

New York Rose was sold at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale by Rosemont Stud. She was bought for $500,000 by Bahen Bloodstock and Matt Laurie Racing.
She is one of four debutants in this field and, trained by Matt Laurie, she has jockey Ethan Brown from barrier five.
Sunshine Coast, Race 1, 2.34pm AEDT (1.34pm local), Sky Racing QTIS 3YO Mdn, $26,000, 1100m
Gulf Of Odessa, 3-year-old gelding (Sebring x Lamiraqui {Choisir})
This unraced gelding is trained by Chris Waller on the Gold Coast, and he was third in a maiden trial on his home track on Valentine’s Day. He is raced by his breeder Sun Stud, and he’ll have a bit of an ask ahead of him in this race from barrier 10.
Gulf Of Odessa was consigned by Sun Stud at the 2020 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale, where he was passed in for $50,000. He comes from an interesting page. He is from the Choisir mare Lamiraqui, who herself is a half-sister to the Listed winner Immortality (Lion Hunter) and a three-quarter sister to the New Zealand Group 1 winner Choice Bro (Choisir).

Gulf Of Odessa is a half-brother to the Listed winner Pressing (Sebring), who was good enough to be fourth in the G1 JJ Atkins S. This is the immediate family of Absolute Flirt (Stratum), who was a stakes winner and stakes-placed on a further four occasions.
Looking Back
On Thursday, our Looking Ahead selections fared only reasonably. At Canterbury, Asteria (Capitalist) was scratched, while Surf On Turf (Not A Single Doubt) was unplaced. At Pakenham, Turfie (Turffontein) was fourth.
