Among a star-studded list of dams in this week’s Easter Sale catalogue, three Group 1-winning mares have their very first foals going through the sale ring, while another nine will be represented by their second foals.

First foals

The trio of first-time mothers in the spotlight at Riverside Stables this week are Hiyaam (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}), Kenedna (Not A Single Doubt) and Maid Of Heaven (Smart Missile).

Hiyaam had 14 starts between 2017 and 2019, winning three times and earning $739,240 in stakes. Her biggest triumph came in the G1 Vinery Stud S. in March of 2018, beating fellow Group 1 winners Unforgotten (Fastnet Rock) and Aloisia (NZ) (Azamour {Ire}). She also won the Listed Randwick City S. and placed in the G1 VRC Oaks, G1 Australian Oaks, G2 Edward Manifold S., G2 Phar Lap S. and G3 Ethereal S.

Hiyaam’s first foal is a colt by Pride Of Dubai, to be offered this week by Segenhoe Thoroughbreds Australia as Lot 213.

“This is a beautiful, big colt,” Segenhoe General Manager Peter O’Brien said. “The mare missed to Fastnet Rock in her following season and has been served by I Am Invincible, so this is the only foal she has on the ground so far.

“He’s a horse I’m very fond of. He’s not going to make telephone numbers this week, but he’s a very high-quality horse that I’m sure someone is going to buy very well.

“He’s inherited a lot of quality from his mother, who’s an absolutely beautiful mare, and this colt has been going down very well in all of his inspections. I’d expect him to be a 2000-metre horse in time, that’s how he’s bred, and there’s a lot of quality coming through from High Chaparral.”

Kenedna was a Group 1 performer as a 3-year-old and a 5-year-old, with an early placing in the G1 Australasian Oaks hinting at her star quality before she reached the pinnacle of her career two years later with triumphs in the G1 Queen of the Turf S. and Doomben Cup.

She won 10 of her 30 starts overall and earned more than $2.1 million, having also recorded black-type victories in the G2 Doomben Roses, G2 Matriarch S., G2 PJ O Shea S., G3 Vanity S., G3 Auraria S. and Listed Laelia S.

Since her retirement from the racetrack, Kenedna has returned to her birthplace at Arrowfield Stud, who will offer her first foal this week. Catalogued as Lot 243, the foal is a filly by Arrowfield sire Dundeel (NZ).

“Kenedna is a client’s mare, and she was obviously a wonderful racemare that was bred here at Arrowfield,” said Jon Freyer, Bloodstock Manager at Arrowfield Stud. “We’re delighted to have her back on the farm.

“Her first foal is a quality filly. She’s not overly big, but I’d say she’s very much in the mould of her mother.”

Maid Of Heaven, a half-sister to the multiple Group 1 winner and young stallion Castelvecchio, was herself a two-race winner including the G1 Spring Champion S.

Her first foal, a colt by Castelvecchio’s sire Dundeel, is also a member of Arrowfield’s draft and will go through the ring as Lot 271.

“This is another one that’s very similar to the dam,” Freyer said. “Mark Newnham trained Maid Of Heaven, and he came to have a look at this colt the other day and said it was just like looking at the mother.

“This is a big, strong colt with a lot of length and scope about him, and he’s got plenty of quality.”

Second foals

Arrowfield also has a strong hand among the Group 1-winning mares whose second foals are selling this week, offering four of the nine in the Easter Sale catalogue.

The first of those is Lot 35, a filly by Dundeel out of Abbey Marie (Redoute’s Choice). The winner of three races including the G1 Australasian Oaks, Abbey Marie’s first foal was a filly by Deep Impact (Jpn) that sold for $900,000 to Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock at this Sale last year. That filly has been named Jolted and has shown potential at the trials for trainer John Sargent.

“This is a glorious filly – I believe she’s one of the fillies of the Sale,” Freyer said. “The mare’s first foal was a lovely Deep Impact filly that’s showing a lot of promise, and this second foal is a particularly good filly with great size and substance. I rate this filly extremely highly.”

Lot 96 is a Snitzel colt out of Carry On Alice (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}), who was Champion Sprinter and Champion Older Female in South Africa. Her 11 wins included the G1 Cape Flying Championship, G1 South African Nursery, G1 Computaform Sprint and two editions of the G1 South African Fillies’ Sprint.

Carry On Alice made her debut at this Sale last year with another Snitzel colt, bought by Mick Price Racing and ARJB for $700,000. He has been named Koster and is in training with Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr.

“Carry On Alice is a fabulous mare and was an extremely fast mare – obviously a multiple Group 1 winner in South Africa,” Freyer said. “I think this colt is more precocious than the one that sold for $700,000 last year. He’s really in that Snitzel mould and looks like he will go early. He’s low to the ground and very strong.”

Lot 349, from the first crop of The Autumn Sun, is a filly out of the G1 VRC Oaks winner Pinot (Pierro). Her first foal was a colt by Snitzel, bought for $300,000 at this Sale last year by Gai Waterhouse, Adrian Bott and Kestrel Thoroughbreds. He has been named Burgunder and won a Randwick trial on March 18.

“This is a very good filly,” Freyer said. “I think she’s the only yearling in the Sale where all of her first three dams are Group 1 winners – Pinot, Dizelle and Danelagh.

“She has a really good walk. She’s not overly big, but neither was Pinot. There’s a lot to like about this filly, who has probably thrown more to the mother’s Pierro side than what we’ve seen from The Autumn Sun so far.”

Rounding out the Arrowfield sophomores is the G1 William Reid S. winner Silent Sedition (War Chant {USA}), whose Snitzel filly will be offered as Lot 424. Her first foal, a Snitzel colt who has been named Ringleader, was a $600,000 purchase by Ciaron Maher Bloodstock and Australian Bloodstock at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

“This filly is an absolute queen,” Freyer enthused. “She’s a lovely filly that we really like.”

Segenhoe’s draft also features a second foal out of a Group 1-winning mare – Lot 204, a colt by Snitzel out of Gust Of Wind (NZ) (Darci Brahma {NZ}).

Famously the last horse to beat the mighty Winx (Street Cry {Ire}) when she won the 2015 Australian Oaks, Gust Of Wind went to Snitzel for both of her first two matings. Her first foal, Sirocco Gale (Snitzel), has been an early placegetter for trainer Chris Waller and owner-breeder Go Bloodstock.

“The foal we’re selling this week is her second Snitzel foal, and both have been stunners,” O’Brien said. “I think this one is actually a far better type than the first. He has size, scope, quality and an incredible action. He has been very popular already, particularly with trainers.

“The mare has an I Am Invincible filly foal this season, which is an absolutely outstanding foal – easily among the top three on our farm this year. That was a late foaling, so we didn’t breed the mare this season. We’ll start again with an early service next time around.

“But she seems to be a mare that throws really outstanding foals. Her first three have all been superb.”

Lot 162 is the second foal out of the G1 New Zealand Oaks and G2 Adelaide Cup winner Fanatic (NZ) (Shocking). The colt by U S Navy Flag (USA) will be offered by Coolmore Stud on behalf of Kiwi breeder Sean Kiernan. Fanatic’s first foal is an unraced 2-year-old colt by Churchill (Ire).

Coolmore will also offer Lot 201, a colt by So You Think (NZ) out of the Argentinean Group 1 winner Greta G (Arg) (Exchange Rate {USA}). Greta G’s first foal is an unraced 2-year-old colt named Peshwa (Tapit {USA}), trained at Cranbourne by Robbie Griffiths and Mathew de Kock.

Yarraman Park’s draft features Lot 250, a colt by Deep Field out of the G1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce S. winner and G2 Thousand Guineas Prelude placegetter La Luna Rossa (NZ) (Written Tycoon). The mare’s first foal is a colt by Fastnet Rock.

Miss Wilson (Stratum), a Group 1-winning half-sister to New Zealand Horse of the Year and sire Jimmy Choux (NZ), has a colt by I Am Invincible for sale this week as Lot 296, offered by Kia Ora Stud. Miss Wilson’s first foal, a Zoustar filly, sold for $340,000 at this Sale last year.
