Looking Ahead - April 23

4 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

On Saturday, we will kick off the day in the opening event at Randwick with a well-related, Coolmore-owned colt before making our way to South Australia to watch a daughter of Lonhro debut at Morphettville.

We will round out the day in the feature juvenile sprint at Caulfield with a son of a Champion Ciaron Maher-trained mare.

Randwick, Race 1, 11.20am AEST, Schweppes H., $130,000, 1100m

Atlantic Ocean, 2-year-old colt (I Am Invincible x My Amelia {Redoute’s Choice})

The Chris Waller-trained Atlantic Ocean hasn’t set the world alight in his three trials to date, where he has been pushed along and failed to figure in the top three.

The Coolmore-owned colt has drawn barrier one and will be partnered by Tommy Berry here on debut.

A $525,000 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase by Tom Magnier, Atlantic Ocean is out of the winning My Amelia, making him a half-brother to G1 Champagne S. winner turned Aquis Farm stallion The Mission and the Group-placed Smart Amelia (Smart Missile).

My Amelia herself is out of the G1 Champagne S. winner Carry On Cutie (More Than Ready {USA}) and hails from the family of G3 Maribyrnong Plate heroine Vinicunca (I Am Invincible).

Morphettville, Race 2, 12.57pm AEST (12.27pm local), Adelaide Racing Carnival - April 30th - May 21st H., $54,750, 1050m

Snow Falcon, 2-year-old filly (Lonhro x Snow Surrender {Sepoy})

The Phillip Stokes-trained Snow Falcon should prove hard to beat here on debut after an ultra-professional trial victory at Traralgon over 950 metres where she dictated from the front.

She maps to get a soft run up on speed from barrier three and will take a power of beating under Victorian-based hoop Zac Spain.

Lonhro | Standing at Darley

Bred and retained by Trevor Robertson’s, Robertson Equine Investments, who have bred G1 Robert Sangster S. heroine Instant Celebrity (Not A Single Doubt), Snow Falcon is out of Snow Surrender, who herself is a half-sister to the Listed-winning Adelong (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}).

Snow Surrender’s grandam is responsible for G1 The Galaxy H. winner Snowland (Snippets) the G2 Surround S.-winning, G1 Golden Slipper S.-placed Portillo (Red Ransom {USA}), who in turn is the dam of the G2 Surround S.-winning Ghisoni (Lonhro).

The Group 1-winning Myboycharlie (Ire), who is the sire of G1 Caulfield Cup heroine Jameka features in the third generation of this family.

Caulfield, Race 6, 3.20pm AEST, The Showdown, $1 million, 1200m

Sir Bailey, 2-year-old colt (Impending x Jameka {Myboycharlie {Ire}})

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Sir Bailey can send his Darley-based sire Impending into second position on the first-season sire standings by earnings with success in this lucrative juvenile feature.

The talented colt was luckless two starts back when finishing back in the field in the G2 VRC Sires’ Produce S. before running on strongly out wide to claim fourth at Moonee Valley last month.

Jamie Kah has been booked to ride Sir Bailey, who maps to get a soft run from barrier four of 14.

Impending | Standing at Darley

The Halo Racing Services, Colin McKenna, Gilgai Farm and Rupert Legh-owned Sir Bailey is the first foal out of Maher’s G1 Caulfield Cup heroine Jameka, who herself is a sister to the G1 Caulfield Guineas-placed Grandslam and the R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic-placed Nikitas (Snitzel).

G1 Canterbury Guineas winner Jymcarew (Danzero) and the G3 Frank Packer Plate-placed Born To Rule (Hennessy {USA}) feature in the second generation of this pedigree.
