Tarzino, Reliable Man head quality Westbury Stud roster

New Zealand’s Westbury Stud has announced its fees for its six-stallion roster for the upcoming breeding season, and we spoke to Russell Warwick, the farm’s general manager, about their lineup.

Emerging sire Tarzino (NZ) has earned a fee increase, with the 9-year-old to stand at Westbury Stud in New Zealand for NZ$15,000 (plus GST), up from NZ$12,000 (plus GST).

He will be joined at Westbury Stud by Reliable Man (GB), El Roca, Redwood (GB), Telperion and Swiss Ace.

The son of ill-fated star sire Tavistock (NZ), Tarzino has produced two stakes winners this season, both from his first crop; Group 3 winner and twice Group 1 runner-up Gypsy Goddess (NZ), as well as Saturday’s G3 Chairman’s S. victor Jungle Magnate (NZ).

Gypsy Goddess is the current favourite for the G1 Queensland Oaks, while Jungle Magnate is well-fancied for the G1 South Australian Derby.

And 2-year-old filly Foreign Raider ran third in the Listed ANZAC Day S. at Flemington recently.

Tarzino is sixth on New Zealand’s Second Season Sires’ table (with four winners for five wins) and 17th in the same category for Australia (with 11 winners for 18 wins).

“When he first went to stud, if you tried to predict what was the likely outcomes over the next three years, you would have said they won’t run as 2-year-olds and probably unlikely to be spring 3-year-olds, but as December-onwards as 3-year-olds you’d like to see them starting to come out of the woodwork,” Westbury Stud’s General Manager Russell Warwick told TDN AusNZ. “I think he’s more than delivered on everything that we could have expected.

“Jungle Magnate won that race on Saturday and Gypsy Goddess came out in December and was unbeaten in her first five starts, with two Group 1 placings to her name.

“He’s got a lot of other emerging young horses, so it’s really satisfying.

“I took the approach that Tavistock never got 2-year-olds, Zabeel never got 2-year-olds… he’s (Tarzino) by Tavistock out of a Zabeel mare, so it’s highly unlikely he’s going to be having an early horse. It’s been gratifying, and all credit to the trainers that bought them (his progeny), they’ve been patient.”

Proven performer

Reliable Man, the sire of Group 1 winners Miami Bound (NZ), Inspirational Girl (NZ) and Sentimental Miss (NZ), will stand for NZ$16,000 (plus GST), down from NZ$17,500 (plus GST).

His stakes winners for the season include Annavisto (NZ), Hypnos (NZ), Reliable Team (NZ), Wannabe ‘N’ Paris (NZ) and Inspirational Girl.

And then there’s Benaud, who ran second in the G1 ATC Derby behind star colt Hitotsu (Maurice {Jpn}).

“He came down here with a huge reputation because he won a Group 1 in both the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere,” said Warwick.

“He’s been a wonderful pleasure to have from day one.

“Every year he gets a new batch of horses… he’s had something like 10 stakes performers this year and five of them are Group performers.

“He’s been a wonderful pleasure to have from day one.

“Annavisto came out and won the Group 3 at Flemington in March and then ran second in the Group 1 at Randwick last month.

“And Inspirational Girl beat Zaaki in the Blamey.”

A sire on the up

El Roca will command a fee of NZ$12,500 (plus GST), up from NZ$8000 (plus GST).

He is seventh on New Zealand’s General Sires’ table (with 31 winners and 46 wins).

Flying the flag for the son of Fastnet Rock is Mali Ston (NZ), Lucky Patch and the unbeaten Norwegian Bliss (NZ).

Mali Ston won the G2 Rich Hill Stud Mile and was third in the G1 Thompson H.; Lucky Patch is a two-time Group 2 winner in Hong Kong; while Norwegian Bliss is unbeaten after six starts.

“He has made really nice progression, this year has been really rewarding,” Warwick said.

“Mali Ston went from being a one-win horse in September to winning a Group 2 in December, and then was Group 1-placed in January, so he’s come through the ranks quickly.

“And Lucky Patch is very unlucky not to have won a Group 1.

“He’s a son of Fastnet Rock and the thing about Fastnet Rock is his progeny get better with age.

“He’s a bit like Tarzino, he’s got a lot of young horses that have been stakes placed or shown really good form this year that will continue to put their hand up.”

Tried and true

The fee for Redwood, sire of this season’s G3 Sunline Vase winner Bellatrix Black (NZ) and Listed Champagne S. winner Sharp ‘N’ Smart (NZ), will remain unchanged at NZ$8000 (plus GST).

Redwood is also the sire of Romancer (NZ), who ran second in two Group 3s.

“He’s had two stakes winners; the one the other day (Sharp ‘N’ Smart) was hugely impressive because Redwood usually doesn’t get 2-year-olds.

“He’s a very talented horse. He’s getting on a plane soon to race in the G1 JJ Atkins in Brisbane. The mile should really suit him.”

Big expectations

Street Cry’s (Ire) son Telperion will stand at NZ$6000 (plus GST), down from NZ$7500 (plus GST).

Telperion filly No Bouquet (NZ) ran third in the Listed Southland Guineas and he has had five winners, including Tolkien (NZ) – a last-start victor in Adelaide for Michael Hickmott.

“The feedback from the trainers that have his progeny are saying that they like them and they should make nice staying horses,” said Warwick.

“He’s a son of Street Cry, who is the sire of Shocking.

“Chris Waller’s got a horse by him that won a trial recently.

“He’s going to have a year where he puts the runs on the board, but we’re pretty confident he’s got the horses to do that.”

Continues to deliver

And evergreen sire Swiss Ace, who sired his 300th individual winner this week, rounds out the roster at NZ$5000 (plus GST).

“He’s an old marvel and to be able to produce 2300 winners is an amazing achievement for any stallion,” Warwick said.

“He gets Group 1 winners to everyday winners, week in, week out.”

Swiss Ace has had 24 winners for 36 wins in New Zealand this season, which sees him 25th on the New Zealand’s General Sires’ table.

Westbury Stud will again be offering its no foal, no fee policy across all six stallions with fees not payable until a live foal is on the ground at 24 hours of age.
