Looking Ahead - June 23

4 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Thursday at Gosford, we pay attention to a gelding whose dam is a half-sister to English (Encosta De Lago), and another for Legend Racing who’s a son of an Irish Listed winner. At Moe, we give some love to a Kiwi-bred gelding who’s a full brother to a Singapore Horse of the Year.

Gosford, Race 3, 1.25pm AEST, Sharp DS Central Coast 2YO Mdn, $35,000, 1100m

Spirit Of Vomo, 2-year-old gelding (Spirit Of Boom x Puzzle {Shamardal {USA}})

Two-year-old Spirit Of Vomo is a son of the Shamardal (USA) mare Puzzle, who is a half-sister to Gai Waterhouse’s very good filly English. English was a Champion 2-Year-Old and 3-Year-Old in Australia from 2014 to 2016, and both her and Puzzle are half-sisters to Al Naifa (Redoute’s Choice), who was third in the Listed Dequetteville S. In fact, the dam of all these fillies is Court (Anabaa {USA}), that brilliant mare that won three Group races in Sydney and Brisbane.

Spirit Of Voom was consigned by Newhaven Park to the 2021 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale where he was picked up by Gai Waterhouse, Adrian Bott and Kestrel Thoroughbreds for $110,000.

He is trained at Tulloch Lodge and has had three trials this preparation, winning his last on June 3. The gelding has drawn barrier four for his debut in this race and he will have Rachel King in the saddle.

Gosford, Race 4, 2.05pm AEST, Eris McCarthy Electrical 3YO Mdn, $35,000, 1100m

Noble Legend, 3-year-old gelding (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn} x Dimenticata {Ire} {Danetime {Ire}})

This gelding is another unraced contestant among our Thursday picks, and he’s a son of an Irish Listed winner who was sharp enough to be second in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas. By Lord Kanaloa (Jpn), Noble Legend has an international page that features the Hong Kong performer Master Fay (Ire) (Fayruz {GB}), and also the Italian stakes winner Mamma Giovanna (Ire) (Windsor Knot {Ire}).

As a yearling, this gelding was consigned to the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale where he sold to John Sadler Racing for $650,000.

Noble Legend, as expected of his name, is raced by Bon Ho’s Legend Racing, and he’s been a late bloomer. Trained at Rosehill by Richard and Will Freedman, he’s had two trials this preparation, the last of which resulted in a fourth. He has drawn barrier five in this field and will have Kerrin McEvoy.

Moe, Race 5, 2.30pm AEST, Ladbroke It! Mdn, $35,000, 1600m

Sing For Peace (NZ), 3-year-old gelding (Tavistock {NZ} x The Nightingale {NZ} {Stravinsky {USA}})

This unraced gelding is a full brother to the Singaporean Horse of the Year Infantry (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}), and also to Night Nurse (NZ) who is stakes-placed in New Zealand. Further along in this family is the G2 Emancipation S. winner Beat The Fade (NZ) (Maroof {USA}) and her half-sister, the G3 Cuddle S. winner Dawn Till Dusk (NZ) (Manntari {Ire}).

Sing For Peace (NZ) was consigned by Woburn Farm to the 2020 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale, where he sold to bloodstock agent John Foote (FBAA) for NZ$140,000.

The gelding is trained at Plumpton by Patrick Payne and he’s had three trials heading into this debut. All have been this preparation, and the last was a third-place finish at Tatura on June 14. He has drawn barrier 12 in this field with jockey Michael Dee.

Looking Back

We had no luck with our Looking Ahead selections on Wednesday. At Canterbury Park, Mutafiq (I Am Invincible) was a scratching while Fairway Star (Spieth {NZ}) was unplaced. At Cranbourne, Harper Rae (Astern) was fourth.
