Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Wednesday at Canterbury, we’ve got the high-profile first foal from the million-dollar earning, million-dollar selling Global Glamour (Star Witness), plus a well-bred Snitzel filly from a Group 1-winning dam. At Cranbourne, we look at a Kiwi-bred gelding whose dam is a full sister to North Pacific.
Canterbury, Race 1, 1.25pm AEST, Ranvet H., $55,000, 1200m
Scientist, 3-year-old colt (Zoustar x Global Glamour {Star Witness})
There will be plenty of eyes on this debutant for a few reasons. Firstly, he is the first foal from the smart race-filly Global Glamour, who was a $1.55 million broodmare, and secondly he is undefeated in two trials to date. He also has the Waterhouse-Bott factor about him.
Scientist was consigned by Coolmore Stud to the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, where he was picked up by his trainers for $600,000. His dam, trained by Waterhouse and Bott, won over $1.5 million in prizemoney, including the G1 Flight S. and G1 Thousand Guineas (plus a pair of Group 2 races).

Scientist is raced by a Coolmore syndicate, and his first trial was a winning one at Randwick on July 8. He was then a trial winner again at Gosford on July 29, so he has plenty of form. He has jockey Tim Clark for this debut from barrier nine.
Canterbury, Race 2, 2pm AEST, Furphy H., $55,000, 1200m
Byron Belle, 3-year-old filly (Snitzel x Diademe {NZ} {Savabeel})
Three-year-old Byron Belle was bred by Gerry Harvey at Baramul Stud, and she’s a daughter of the Savabeel mare Diademe (NZ). As a racehorse, Diademe was a winner of the G1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ S., plus the G2 Cal Isuzu S. and the G3 Westbury Classic (twice). There is plenty of pedigree here as she is also a full sister to G1 New Zealand Two Guineas winner Embellish (NZ).
Byron Belle was consigned by Baramul to the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, where she was picked up by Ciaron Maher and Waimarie Partnership for $460,000.
Snitzel | Standing at Arrowfield Stud
The filly was transferred to John Sargent at Randwick and she’s had three trials to date this preparation, the latest when she was fourth to Pantonario (Not A Single Doubt) on August 2. She will debut in this race with jockey Keagan Latham from barrier one.
Cranbourne, Race 2, 1pm AEST, Membership Renewal NOW 3YO Mdn, $37,500, 1300m
Japanese Emperor (NZ), 3-year-old gelding (Satono Aladdin {Jpn} x Inthespotlight {NZ} {O’Reilly {NZ}})
This unraced 3-year-old gelding for trainer Michael Moroney is a Rich Hill Stud product. By Rich Hill’s resident sire Satono Aladdin (Jpn), he was bred by the Matamata farm and consigned to the 2021 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale. Bloodstock agent Paul Moroney, alongside Ballymore Stables, paid NZ$360,000 for him.
Japanese Emperor (NZ) is the second foal from an unraced O’Reilly (NZ) mare who is a full sister to the dam of the Group 3 winning, Group 1-placed Newgate sire, North Pacific. The second dam, in turn, is a half-sister to the top Australian 3-year-old, Metal Bender (NZ) (Danasinga).

Japanese Emperor is trained by Moroney at Flemington. This will be his debut, but he’s had three jump-outs through July and August, the best of which was a second at home on July 8. He will have Jye McNeil in this race from barrier six.
Looking Back
In the words of Meatloaf, two out of three ain't bad with our Looking Ahead selections on Tuesday. At Wyong, Narito (Maurice {Jpn}) was a winner and Miss Boom Boom (Snitzel) was unplaced. At Donald, Bencoolen (Written Tycoon) was also a winner.
