Pakenham jump-outs on Tuesday morning continued the latest trend of spring stars returning, and local trainer Peter Moody had a monopoly on events, sending out the bulk of Tuesday’s trial winners.
In particular, his 3-year-old star Brereton (Zoustar) was very good, winning his 750-metre heat on the synthetic in a cruising time of 44.50s, which was the quickest over the distance. Piloted by Luke Nolen, the colt rattled away from the field with the Kasey Wilson-trained Magic Drum (Magic Albert), the pair putting several lengths into the final result.

The field also included the 3-year-old filly Yowie (Vancouver) who, trained by John Sadler, was a smart winner on debut at Sandown last March. She was since fourth in the Listed Redoute’s Choice S. in the autumn.
Also lining up was the five-time winning mare Okay To Pay (Gingerbread Man) and the stakes-performing Toronado (Ire) gelding, Airclash (NZ).
It proved a good result for Brereton against older horses. The 3-year-old had a midfield draw and, when asked in the straight, he was the first to kick clear before Magic Drum drew alongside him.
Brereton, a son of the Red Ransom (USA) mare Fuddle Dee Duddle, won the G3 Maribyrnong Plate last spring after his debut appearance when second in the Listed Debutant S. at Caulfield. He was since third to Sheeza Belter (Gold Standard) in the G2 BRC Sires’ Produce S., and wrapped up his juvenile season when unplaced to the same horse in the G1 JJ Atkins S.
So far, Moody has nominated the colt for the G1 Golden Rose on September 24 and the G1 Caulfield Guineas on October 8. Brereton races for a syndicate headed by Rosemont Stud, but which also includes Noorilim Park, Musk Creek and Glentree Racing.
It was the Victorian Alliance, alongside Suman Hedge Bloodstock (FBAA) and David Redvers, that paid $1 million for Brereton when he was offered by Widden Stud at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. His dam, Fuddle Dee Duddle, was a Group 3 winner and half-sister to the Starcraft (NZ) Group and Listed winner, Hallowell Belle.

New juveniles appear at Pakenham
Outside of Brereton, Pakenham’s 10-heat card on Tuesday morning also saw the Moody-trained colt, I Am Caviar, stepping out in the sixth event.
Over 750 metres, the Neil Werrett colt was fifth behind the winner, his stablemate Lake Agawam (Lonhro), but he was unhurried throughout by his rider, Emily Pozman.
I Am Caviar is the latest of the progeny from the Bel Esprit Champion Black Caviar to hit the track, and the 3-year-old colt is unraced and carefully handled so far. His only official appearance has been on May 3 at Traralgon, when he was first in a barrier trial by 3.25l.
Additionally at Pakenham, a 2-year-old trial occurred at the end of proceedings, with a number of unnamed progeny stepping out over 600 metres. Moody had three of the four-horse field, including a Zoustar colt from the triple Group 3 winner Avenue (Anabaa {USA}).

The unnamed colt was also a purchase for the Rosemont-Victorian Alliance, Suman Hedge Bloodstock (FBAA) and David Redvers Bloodstock at this year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $420,000 from Ridgmont Farm.
The trial was won by an unnamed Deep Field filly from the South African Group 1 winner Chocolicious (SAf) (Kahal {GB}). Also trained by Moody, the youngster had Thomas Stockdale aboard and ticked off the 600 metres in 37.75s.
She was a $300,000 purchase for the Trilogy Racing team with CB Bloodstock at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale when plucked out of the Tyreel Stud draft.

Doomben appearances
Doomben played host on Tuesday morning to its own set of trials, and there were plenty of names dropping across the morning.
In Heat 1, the Tony Gollan gelding Zoustyle (Zoustar), a winner of the G3 George Moore S. last December, led home an impressive duet of Rothfire (Rothesay) and Nettuno (I Am Invincible). Arentee (Territories {Ire}), last seen when second in the Listed Queensland Day S., was fourth.

The 7-year-old Zoustyle, unplaced last time out to Mazu (Maurice {Jpn}) in the G1 Doomben 10,000, led from pillar to post on Tuesday, stretching out to win by 1l to Rothfire. The latter, who was a fetching third behind Alligator Blood (All Too Hard) in the Stradbroke in his last appearance, was also good for trainer Robert Heathcote, finishing second.
From the same stable, Heathcote watched on later as his G3 Queensland Guineas winner Prince Of Boom (Spirit Of Boom) won Heat 4 by 4l. It was a dazzling effort, even by the trainer’s standards.
“He won by four or 5l and he did it well,” Heathcote said, speaking to Nathan Exelby later in the morning. “He’s exactly where I need him to be, so it’s an exciting time heading into the spring.”

Prince Of Boom will head to Melbourne with Rothfire for the Moonee Valley meeting on September 3.
A tilt at the Listed Chautauqua S. over 1200 metres could set him up for a clash with Uncommon James (Cable Bay {Ire}), who won the Listed Regal Roller S. at Caulfield last weekend.
“I’m not sure where Matt (Hoysted) and Steve (O’Dea) are going to go (with Uncommon James), and the reason I’m not sure is because I want Damian Lane to ride my horse in the Chautauqua,” Heathcote said. “So they may go to the Bobbie Lewis or they may go to the Chautauqua. If they do, I’ll try and get Damien Oliver, or someone like that.”

Isotope on-song
In Heat 3, Gollan’s star mare Isotope narrowly led home the G1 Tatt’s Tiara winner Startantes (Star Turn) in a very good 1-2 finish on the Doomben track.
Isotope was last seen in the star-studded Stradbroke also, finishing a credible fourth to Alligator Blood when piloted by William Pike.

On Tuesday, the 5-year-old mare pleased her trainer when she kicked away, only to be gathered in by Startantes for a narrow finish. Gollan said afterwards that she was only marginally “fidgety” compared to how she was during her winter campaign.
“She stepped away well,” he said. “She had no gear on her head at all and she showed good speed. She relaxed well with a good turn of foot, with Startantes just finishing up beside her late.”
Gollan added that Isotope, a triple Listed winner at this stage with $1.29 million in earnings, didn’t show her best at Eagle Farm, which was where the mare completed her winter when last seen there in her last three runs.
