Looking Ahead - August 18

4 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Thursday at Hawkesbury, we look at a Rosemont colt with a stack of stallions in his damline, plus an Ingham gelding whose dam is a full sister to Stratum. At Echuca, we’ve got a full sister to the excellent, Group-winning filly Pasadena Girl (NZ) (Savabeel).

Hawkesbury, Race 1, 12.40pm AEST, Saddle Up for Spring 3rd Sept 3YO Mdn, $50,000, 1000m

Quinlan, 3-year-old colt (I Am Invincible x Precious Lorraine {Encosta De Lago})

This colt is raced by the Rosemont-headed Victorian Alliance, which bought him in partnership with Suman Hedge Bloodstock (FBAA) and David Redvers Bloodstock at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. The group paid $600,000 for him from the draft of his breeder, Baramul Stud.

Quinlan has it all going for him on pedigree. He’s from the Group 3-winning mare Precious Lorraine who is a three-quarter sister to the stakes-winning sires Manhattan Rain, Rubick and Echoes Of Heaven. All of this is via the second dam on this page, Monsoon Wedding (Danehill {USA}) who, as a daughter of Shantha’s Choice (Canny Lad), is a full sister to Redoute’s Choice and Platinum Scissors, and a three-quarter sister to Al Maher, Sliding Cube (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}) and Twyla (Danehill {USA}).

Quinlan is related to the Guineas-nominated Wyong winner of Tuesday, Crystalane (Snitzel), with their dams being full sisters. As such, there is plenty to recommend this colt. He debuted unplaced as a juvenile last season, but he’s since been a trial winner at Gosford on July 29. The colt is trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, and he has barrier four with Nash Rawiller for this, his second race.

Hawkesbury, Race 3, 1.50pm AEST, Pegasus Roofing Mdn, $50,000, 1300m

Utopian Spirit, 3-year-old gelding (Spirit Of Boom x Dystopia {Redoute’s Choice})

This unraced gelding is a homebred for the Ingham operation, and he’s a half-brother to the Street Boss (USA) gelding Estreet, who has won two races in four starts for Chris Waller, including a last-start win at Kembla Grange this week. The pair are from the Redoute’s Choice mare Dystopia, who was a winner of the G3 GH Mumm S. (Begonia Belle S.) at Flemington in 2013, as well as the Listed Toy Show Quality and Listed Triscay S.

Dystopia is notable as the full sister to the G1 Golden Slipper winner Stratum, who also won the G2 Pago Pago S. and was a brilliant sire of 44 stakes winners during his stud career, notably Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily and four-time Group 1 winner Streama.

Utopian Spirit is also trained by Waller and he’s had a pair of trials this winter, the latest of which was a fourth at Rosehill last week to the million-dollar yearling Northern Beaches (Not A Single Doubt). He will have Kerrin McEvoy in this debut from barrier eight.

Echuca, Race 3, 2pm AEST, Hygain Mdn, $37,500, 1400m

Duvach (NZ), 3-year-old filly (Savabeel x Nina From Pasadena {Redoute’s Choice})

This unraced filly is a full sister to the G1 Champagne S. winner Pasadena Girl, who was also smart enough to win the G1 VRC Thoroughbred Breeders’ S. and Listed Talindert S. She was additionally placed in two stakes races, and was fourth in three Group 1 races. Their dam was a full sister to Renewed Vitality (Redoute’s Choice), who was third in the G3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup.

Duvach (NZ) was consigned to the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale by Valiant Stud, where she was sold to Clarke Bloodstock and Attunga Stud for $525,000.

She is trained at Cranbourne by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, and she was first in a debut trial a fortnight ago. In this debut, she will have jockey Patrick Moloney from barrier two.

Looking Back

Our Looking Ahead selections on Wednesday went well. At Canterbury, Scientist (Zoustar) was third and Byron Belle (Snitzel) was second. At Cranbourne, Japanese Emperor (NZ) (Satono Aladdin {Jpn}) was a scratching.
