Matings mix: ‘The main purpose of our breeding programs is to make stallions’

Having already part-owned a Golden Slipper winner and having bred a Slipper champion who has also gone to the breeding barn, Matthew Sandblom’s desire to unearth the next generation of sires has never been stronger.

Prominent owner-breeder Matthew Sandblom is prepared to travel far and wide in a bid to secure the best available bloodstock to support his business interests.
That has seen him head overseas to sales including the Arqana August Yearling Sale in Deauville and the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale in Kentucky, and he has also enjoyed great success locally, buying and selling at Australia’s pre-eminent sales - the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Sandblom, who grew up selling racing books at Harold Park Paceway, is a significant shareholder in one of the country’s leading breeding operations, Newgate Farm, and is the principal of Kingstar Farm.
The education publishing entrepreneur has become a significant player in the Australian thoroughbred industry and his investment bore fruit in 2016 when Capitalist, a $165,000 yearling colt he part-owned, won the G1 Golden Slipper S.

That result enhanced Sandblom’s appetite for producing stallions, and he has taken great joy in seeing Capitalist become a success at stud. The son of Written Tycoon was runner-up to Extreme Choice as Australia’s Leading First Season Sire in 2020-21, before finishing second to Maurice (Jpn) as the country’s leading Second Season Sire last season. Capitalist, who stands at Newgate Farm at a fee of $99,000 (inc GST) has eight stakes winners to his credit, headlined by G1 2021 Champagne S. hero Captivant.
In 2018, Sandblom paid $90,000 for Nothin’ Leica Storm (Anabaa {USA}) at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale. The mare was offered by Widden Stud and was in foal to Extreme Choice. A winner of three races, Nothin’ Leica Storm is from the extended family of G1 Caulfield Guineas winner Wonderful World, as well as the Group 1-winning sprinter Spartacus (Snippets).
The resultant foal was named Stay Inside and Kingstar Farm sold the colt for $60,000 to Newgate Bloodstock at the 2019 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale, the following year. Stay Inside was offered by Newgate Farm at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, where he was knocked down to Michael and Richard Freedman and Rick Connolly Bloodstock for $200,000.

Five years after Capitalist took out the world’s richest race for juveniles, Stay Inside emulated that colt’s deeds, much to Sandblom’s delight. Stay Inside only raced on two more occasions before being retired to Newgate Farm, where he stands alongside his father for $77,000 (inc GST).
As Sandblom explained to TDN AusNZ, his primary focus is to breed the next Capitalist or Stay Inside.
“The main purpose of our breeding programs is to make stallions, so when we are acquiring mares and mating mares, that’s top of mind, and applicable to Newgate Farm and Kingstar Farm,” Sandblom said.
“The main purpose of our breeding programs is to make stallions, so when we are acquiring mares and mating mares, that’s top of mind, and that’s applicable to Newgate Farm and Kingstar Farm.” - Matthew Sandblom
“We consider what type of mares, both on breeding and type, will best support the stallions that we have and about 95 per cent of our mares will go to our own stallions.”
Sandblom not only has stallions at Newgate Farm, he also stands four at Kingstar Farm. They are Group 2 winner Time To Reign, Group 3 winners Bull Point and Lord Of The Sky, plus Listed winner Unite And Conquer. Approximately two thirds of the broodmare band will be covered by Newgate Farm-based stallions, with the remaining third served by the Kingstar Farm quartet.
He said the decision-making process regarding which mare goes where was a team effort.
Sandblom explained: “Henry (Field, Newgate Farm managing director) is pretty much involved across the board. I will do an initial run through of all the Kingstar-based mares, which is approximately 140… I’ll do it on a spreadsheet with all of the possibilities and what they have produced and the pedigrees. Then, I sit down with Adam Cook (Kingstar Farm's Manager), Conor Phelan (Kingstar Farm’s nominations manager) and Henry and we go through and adjust the list.

“There may be a reason, either on type or pedigree, that might standout for someone, so we consider all of those things. We probably adjust 25 per cent of my initial list.
“We bought some mares particularly for some stallions, then there’s mares that have also produced progeny by the stallions and we like the progeny, so they are much more likely to go back.”
Strong support for Extreme Choice
Given the feats of Extreme Choice during his fledging career at stud, it’s little wonder Sandblom is sending a number of his top mares to the Group 1-winning sire.
Extreme Choice will stand for $275,000 (inc GST) | Standing at Newgate Farm
From just 40 runners last season, Extreme Choice had 23 individual winners combine for 39 wins and six individual winners took out nine stakes races, including She’s Extreme, who was victorious in the G1 Champagne S.
Not surprisingly, Nothin’ Leica Storm will return to Extreme Choice.
“She did the job for us with Stay Inside and then she had a nice filly by Russian Revolution, who is with Annabel Neasham,” said Sandblom.
“She (Nothin’ Leica Storm) did the job for us with Stay Inside and then she had a nice filly by Russian Revolution, who is with Annabel Neasham.” - Matthew Sandblom
“Extreme Choice is the obvious one, but she’s not a mare that gets in foal every year. Hopefully we can get her in foal to him again, but if not, Capitalist is the back-up option.”
Another mare to be covered by Extreme Choice is Group 1 victress I Am A Star (NZ) (I Am Invincible).
She already has a Deep Field 2-year-old colt and a Fastnet Rock yearling colt, and is in foal to Extreme Choice.

Shane Nichols, who trained I Am A Star, paid $800,000 for the Deep Field colt from the Newgate Farm draft at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
“He’s a nice colt, I don’t know if he’ll race before Christmas, but he’s coming along nicely,” Sandblom said.
“We got her (I Am A Star) in foal, pretty much first go, to Extreme Choice, which was a bonus.
“This time, she’ll probably go back to Extreme Choice, with Russian Revolution the fallback option.”

Mischief Night (Shamardal {USA}) has already thrown a stakes winner, two-time Group 3 victor Our Playboy (Sebring).
Having just given birth to an Extreme Choice colt, she will return to him this season.
“The colt she just had is a very nice colt and we’re happy with that, because she’s a good mare, she’s already produced a stakes winner,” said Sandblom.
“The colt she (Mischief Night) just had is a very nice colt and we’re happy with that, because she’s a good mare, she’s already produced a stakes winner.” - Matthew Sandblom
“Based on the colt, we’d like to go back to Extreme Choice.”
Sweet Bouquet (Dream Ahead {USA}) – a relation to Group 2 winner Santos – has already produced a colt by Extreme Choice and she will return to him this season.
“Her first foal by Extreme Choice is a cracker; we reckon he’s one of the best Extreme Choices we’ve seen as a foal,” he added.
“Based on that first foal, she’ll obviously go back to him.”
A quality first book for Slipper hero
Stay Inside will stand his first season at stud and he will get every chance, with the Golden Slipper winner's book boasting an abundance of quality broodmares.
Sandblom has high hopes for Stay Inside and is confident he will cut the mustard.
“He was very impressive in the Golden Slipper; he had a few hoof issues, which prevented him from showing his best in the spring, but he was dominant in the Slipper which is always a good sign,” he said.
“He (Stay Inside) was very impressive in the Golden Slipper; he had a few hoof issues, which prevented him from showing his best in the spring...” - Matthew Sandblom
“He’s a nice medium-sized horse and will suit plenty of mares.
“He’ll get plenty of opportunity to serve mares.
“We’ve bred plenty of good horses over the years, but nothing like Stay Inside.”
Imported mare Decorous (GB) (Toronado {Ire}) is out of the unraced mare Considerate (GB) (Dansili {GB}), a half-sister to globetrotting Group 1-winning superstar Enable (Nathaniel {Ire}). Sandblom bought her at the 2019 Arqana August Yearling Sale in Deauville.

“She didn’t get to the races, but she’s got a bit of a pedigree behind her,” Sandblom commented.
“She’s a nice, big, strong mare and she is in foal to Capitalist, she’s a little overdue.
“We will give her a chance with Stay Inside.”
Strawb (Fastnet Rock) won five races and $113,130 in prizemoney and hails from the same family as Sunday Joy (Sunday Silence {USA}), More Joyous (NZ) (More Than Ready {USA}), Tuesday Joy (NZ) (Carnegie {Ire}) and Joie Denise (Danehill {USA}).

She will also be served by Stay Inside.
“She’s a nice, big, strong mare. And she’s a good-looking mare, so hopefully she gets in foal,” he said.
“A medium-size horse like Stay Inside should match well. I think she will produce a nice foal; she’s got plenty of substance to her, so I’d be surprised if she didn’t.”

Stakes-placed mare to visit Capitalist
Cafe Royal boasts a lovely pedigree, being by Snitzel from the family of Redoute’s Choice and Manhattan Rain, among others.
She won eight races and $261,370 in stakes money and was placed in Listed grade.
Her first cover will be Capitalist.

“She’s a mare we bred ourselves, Henry and I own her. She’s from a very good family, from the Redoute’s Choice family and she’s a Snitzel mare. She was a good metropolitan mare,” Sandblom said.
“I suppose with these young mares there’s a tendency to go towards things that might be more precocious, so you get something that will get to the track earlier. Hopefully, it’s performing when some of the other foals out of this mare are coming through later on,” said Sandblom.
Returning to Russian Revolution
Munjai (Trusting) is a three-quarter sister to dual Listed winner Whittington. Their dam, Maha Chakri (Beautiful Crown {USA}), was a Listed winner.
Sandblom paid just $7000 for Munjai at the 2018 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale (Book 1).
Her first foal, a Capitalist colt, sold for $220,000 at the 2021 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale, while her second, a Russian Revolution filly, made $560,000 at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

She is in foal to Russian Revolution and will be covered by him once again this season.
“Munjai is a bit of a surprise packet. She’s a cheap mare that Henry and I bought. Her first couple of foals have sold very well,” Sandblom remarked.
“When you sell a yearling for $560,000, not surprisingly, you go back to Russian Revolution.”

Deep Field keeps delivering
Dance Music (War Chant {USA}) is a mare Sandblom co-bred and he raced her mother, Fast Flowing (NZ) (Dubawi {Ire}). Dance Music won five stakes races, including two at Group 3 level.
This will be her first cover.
“She’s a nice compact mare, so we thought we would go to a proven stallion, but also with a bit of scope for her first mating,” he said.

Collins (Desert King {Ire}) – a full sister to triple Melbourne Cup heroine Makybe Diva (GB) – will also visit Deep Field.
“She’s just had a filly by So You Think and then she’ll go to Deep Field,” Sandblom said.
“She’s probably not the prettiest of mares, but one of the reasons I bought her was she had a good colt by So You Think sell for $290,000 as a weanling and she’s also produced another good son of So You Think.”

Blue-blood Great Barrier Reef records strong win Warwick Farm
Written by
Lydia Symonds

Bigger and better targets could lie in wait for the Chris Waller-trained Great Barrier Reef (I Am Invincible) as he shrugged off his maiden status with an eye-catching win at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.
Cover image courtesy of Ashlea Brennan
The 3-year-old colt, who is owned by a partnership that includes Coolmore and Kia Ora Stud, had one start as a juvenile, finishing fourth behind subsequent G1 Golden Slipper S. runner-up Best Of Bordeaux (Snitzel) in the G3 Canonbury S. at Rosehill.
He then kicked off his Classic season with a fifth-place finish on Soft ground at Randwick-Kensington on August 24.
However, the Good ground on Wednesday seemed to bring out the best in the blue-blood, as he held on tenaciously at the line to beat Tribeca Star (Star Turn) by 0.2l, while the Godolphin-raced Pereille (Fastnet Rock) was the same distance away in third.
Bred by Don and Judy Kelly, Great Barrier Reef is out of their high-class racemare Cosmic Endeavour (Northern Meteor), whom they purchased for $230,000 from the Willow Park Stud draft at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in 2021.
The mare proved to be somewhat of a superstar for the Kellys and her seven career victories included triumphs in the 2014 edition of the G1 Tattersall’s Tiara, while she added a second elite-level victory to her CV when she landed the G1 Canterbury S. the following year.
Upon her retirement, her total tally of stakes wins stood at five, which saw her accrue $1,447,280 in career prizemoney.

Standout yearling
In winning Wednesday's contest, Great Barrier Reef becomes Cosmic Endeavour's second winner joining three-time scorer L’Cosmo (Lonhro), who sold to Andrew Williams Bloodstock (FBAA) and her co-owner Grant Bloodstock for $460,000 at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale in 2020.
The son of I Am Invincible was purchased for $1.4 million by Coolmore’s Tom Magnier from the Kia Ora Stud draft at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in 2021, the fourth-equal-highest price that year.

Kia Ora bought into the colt at the sale and the farm’s Bloodstock and Breeding Manager, Shane Wright told TDN AusNZ the colt was a standout amongst their very strong draft at the Inglis sale in 2021.
“He was the typical Vinnie that you absolutely fall in love with at a sale. He was good-sized, strong, forward and just had so much quality,” said Wright.
“We were selling him on behalf of a client, Don and Judy Kelly, and they raced Cosmic Endeavour and have kept her breed going forward.
“He (Great Barrier Reef) was the typical Vinnie that you absolutely fall in love with at a sale. He was good-sized, strong, forward and just had so much quality.” - Shane Wright
“We had a very strong draft that year's Easter sale, but he was a standout colt. When Coolmore bought him, we had obviously raced a few with Coolmore before and we just asked if we could take a share, because he has every chance of being a quality stallion in the future.”
Beautiful type
Cosmic Endeavour herself is out of three-time Listed winner Crevette (Danehill {USA}), who also finished second in the G3 Champagne S. Crevette herself is a daughter of G2 Edward Manifold S. winner Twiglet (Twig Moss {Fr}) meaning she is a sister to Hong Kong Champion Fairy King Prawn (Danehill {USA}), while she is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Easy Rocking.
Further back this is also the same family as G3 Kindergarten S. winner Anise (General Nediym) - the dam of this season’s Listed Atlantic Jewel S. winner Troach (Epaulette).
Shane Wright
Being out of a daughter of Northern Meteor, Great Barrier Reef becomes the third winner, from four to race, bred on the I Am Invincible / Northern Meteor cross and the best of the four is the Listed winner Najmaty.
Cosmic Endeavour has a filly yearling by Too Darn Hot (GB) and she recently produced another daughter of the son of Dubawi (Ire), while Wright said the mare has been booked to his Darley barnmate Pinatubo (Ire) this spring.
“She was a dual Group 1 winner and she’s a beautiful type herself. She’s a Northern Meteor mare and has lots of class about her,” said Wright. “She is so good natured and has a great temperament. She has just foaled a Too Darn Hot filly, about two weeks ago and she is a beautiful type and we are very, very happy with her and she is booked to Pinatubo this year.”
“She (Cosmic Endeavour) was a dual Group 1 winner and she’s a beautiful type herself. She’s a Northern Meteor mare and has lots of class about her.” - Shane Wright
Great day for Vinnie
Wright said the colt, who holds a nomination for the G1 Caulfield Guineas on October 8, was benefitted from the better ground on Wednesday.
“He was very lightly raced as a 2-year-old. He is the sort of horse that Chris Waller does an amazing job with, giving them time and allowing them to find their feet.
“Trying to find that right track for an I Am Invincible, especially one you’ve got a high opinion of, has been pretty tough over the last couple of months as well.”

It was a brilliant day for I Am Invincible, as another from his 2019 crop, a 3-year-old filly named Tanjeed, who was bred and is raced by Emirates Park, got off the mark at the first time of asking when she took out a 1300-metre event at Sandown-Hillside.
The filly is out of Roudha (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who is herself a daughter of dual Group 1-winning Champion Melito (Redoute’s Choice).

Orbolution (USA) has been the gift that keeps on giving for the Hinkle family, her first foal, a colt (Hip 369), summoned US$1.1 million (AU$1.63 million) from the powerhouse partnership of Coolmore's M.V. Magnier and Repole Stable.
Euphoric Book 1 session concludes
Nine yearlings sold for seven figures or more Monday and a further 13 horses topped that mark during Tuesday's session, led by a US$1.8-million (AU$2.67 million) son of Constitution (USA).
“Coming out of day one, I think that momentum was almost euphoric,” said Keeneland Vice President of Sales Tony Lacy. “Coming into Day 2, we were sort of thinking, 'Can we maintain this?' And putting it in racing terms, we hit the wire hard. We finished that last couple of hours with that euphoric feeling all the way through the session. When you are ending up with a US$533,000 (AU$792,200) average for session two, US$516,000 (AU$766,900) average for Book 1, it was really encouraging.”
During the two Book 1 sessions, 220 yearlings sold for US$113,660,000 (AU$168,982,000). The average of US$516,636 (AU$768,100) was up 18.58 per cent from the 2021 Book 1 average and the median was up 28.57 per cent to US$450,000 (AU$669,000). With 62 yearlings reported not sold, the buy-back rate was 21.99 per cent. It was 34.18 per cent a year ago.

Keeneland President Shannon Arvin credited the sellers who had provided top offerings to the book's success.
“We appreciate so much the sellers, and breeders, and consignors that worked with us on the format and really believed in us as we tried to put together the best possible Book 1 we could, and to the buyers for coming out,” Arvin said.
The Keeneland September Sale continues with Book 2 sessions on Wednesday and Thursday beginning at 11am (local). Following a dark day on Friday, the auction continues up to September 24, with sessions beginning daily at 10am (local).
Sitting chilly well until into the second session of the Keeneland September Sale, Jim and Dana Bernhard's Lynnhaven Racing turned on all boosters to land Hip 311, a colt by Constitution (USA), for US$1.8 million (AU$2.67 million). Soon after the colt entered the ring, it was quickly apparent that it would be a dogfight as several bidders, among them Mike Repole, responded to every volley launched by the Bernhard camp. When the dust had settled, it was Dana Bernhard who signed the ticket on the Valentine's Day foal.

Representing the Bernhards, advisor Equine Analysis' Matt Weinmann added, “The market sets the price. I knew we'd have to stretch for him, but I didn't know we'd have to go that high but I'm happy to have him. At Equine Analysis, we get the best information we can get, and we take a shot.”
Consigned by Taylor Made Sales on behalf of the colt's breeder China Horse Club, the February 14 foal is out of Grade 1 winner Last Full Measure (USA) (Empire Maker {USA}) and is a half-brother to G1 Juddmonte Spinster S. winner Valiance (USA) (Tapit {USA}). China Horse Club purchased Last Full Measure for US$1.5 million (AU$2.23 million) at the 2014 Keeneland November Sale.
“He just jumps out at you,” said China Horse Club's Michael Smith. “Whenever you sell a horse for a million dollars, it's rare. We hoped he could, and the chips fell the right way today.”
“Whenever you sell a horse for a million dollars, it's rare. We hoped he (Hip 311) could, and the chips fell the right way today.” - Michael Smith
Enjoying strong trade at Keeneland so far, Taylor Made's Mark Taylor recalled, “We saw this colt at WinStar Farm a few times prior and as soon as we saw him, we said that was one of the best Constitutions we've seen. He was one of the better colts we had seen in this crop. He's beautifully bred and out of a Grade 1 winner and she's also the dam of a Grade 1 winner.”
He continued, “He was a great representative of the stallion and he brought a bunch of money which he deserved to,” continued Taylor. “The blood is there. And this just looks like a Derby horse. A lot of presence. Big, strong and a lot of substance. We were fortunate to have him. China Horse Club just bred a beautiful horse.”

China Horse Club's breeding program continues to succeed
The China Horse Club's breeding program has been growing in both size and success as it reaches its fifth year. The organisation, led by Teo Ah Khing, was represented by a seven-figure yearling for the third-straight year at Keeneland September when a Constitution colt out of Graded stakes winner Cozze Up Lady (USA) (Cozzene {USA}) (Hip 192) summoned US$1.3 million (AU$1.93 million) from Richard Knight Bloodstock just minutes into Tuesday's session. Later in the session, the operation sold another son of Constitution for US$1.8 million (AU$2.68 million) (Hip 311).
“The team is extremely happy,” Teo said. “The horse presented well and was respected. We are a partner in Constitution. It shows that a rising pedigree combined with a strong stallion like Constitution is working. His half-sister's (Kimari) CV helped as well.”
“The horse (Hip 192) presented well and was respected. We are a partner in Constitution. It shows that a rising pedigree combined with a strong stallion like Constitution is working.” - Teo Ah King
“This is our fifth year breeding in America, which is relatively short compared with many others,” Teo said. “We want to continue to upgrade our mares. We will come back in November and look at our expansion plan in America. We have stallions to support like Life Is Good, Tiz The Law, Constitution, Improbable, Yoshida, Justify and others. We always bring everything to market. That has been the plan from day one and it works. We will continue to participate on certain horses as well.”
Hip 192 was the first seven-figure sale for Jill Gordon and Jacob West's Highgate Sales, which debuted earlier this year at the Fasig-Tipton February Sale, where they sold the topper.
“From day one, this horse had been one of the top physicals and had the pedigree to match,” said West after congratulating Knight. “We knew he was pretty damn popular. He was bred by China Horse Club and raised at WinStar and they did an incredible job getting him ready…That was Jill Gordon's first million-dollar horse, and a lot of credit has to go to her in putting this consignment together.”
China Horse Club purchased Hip 192's dam Cozze Up Lady for US$300,000 (AU$445,600) at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. She is also the dam of Grade 1 winner Kimari (USA) (Munnings {USA}), who was purchased by Coolmore's M.V. Magnier for US$2.7 million (AU$4.01 million) at last year's Fasig-Tipton November Sale and returned to training. She most recently captured Saratoga's G2 Honorable Miss H. in July.
“He was absolutely my pick coming in here,” said Knight, who indicated the colt would remain in the US. “I loved him from the moment I saw him. I thought he was everything we came here to look for. We came to look for a really smart horse who will hopefully be a two-turn horse. He has pedigree and is by a great stallion. Gorgeous-looking horse. Every single time he came out, he did it for me. Delighted to get him.”

Magnier strikes for Justify colt
Coolmore's M.V. Magnier made his first seven-figure bid of the Keeneland September Sale when going to US$1.1 million (AU$1.63 million) to acquire a colt by Triple Crown winner Justify (USA) (Hip 339). Out of stakes winner and multiple Graded stakes-placed Milam (USA) (Street Sense {USA}), the colt was consigned by Denali Stud on behalf of breeder WinStar Farm. Milam is a half-sister to Champion Rushing Fall (USA) (More Than Ready {USA}).
“(Trainer) Aidan (O'Brien) came over and Paul Shanahan and Dermot (Ryan), everybody really liked this horse,” Magnier said. “He comes from a really good family. And the way Justify is going, a lot of people are saying what he is doing at the moment is actually incredible. To be going as well as he is as early as he is, everybody seems to be pretty surprised by it. We're very excited about him.
“The market here is incredible,” Magnier continued. “But this is a very well-bred horse and WinStar are very good breeders. Conrad (Bandoroff) said the horse was very popular. If you breed a horse like that, I suppose you deserve to get paid for him.”

Justify, who stands at Coolmore, has already been represented by three Graded winners from his first crop to hit the track this year. Of the operation's runners by Justify, Magnier said, “All the ones we have are very sound, tough horses. They have plenty of speed and they look like they will stay as well. He never ran at two and he's had three Group winners already. He's flying. He couldn't be doing any better than he is.”
Magnier also purchased Hip 339's half-brother by Quality Road (USA) for US$950,000 (AU$1.41 million) at last year's Keeneland September Sale.
WinStar purchased Milam for US$175,000 (AU$259,700) at the 2016 Keeneland November Sale.

“(WinStar) gave us some very nice horses to sell,” Denali's Conrad Bandoroff said. “They breed a very good horse. This was a very popular horse. Justify is off to a gangbuster start. He's going to have every chance in going to a top program. He's got class. He carried himself back here like a real professional. He never took a wrong step. Very intelligent with a lot of class.”
Knight strikes again for Justify filly
Coming out of the gate running during Tuesday's second Keeneland September session, Richard Knight had already garnered a bevy of yearlings early in the afternoon, including Hip 255, a daughter of freshman sire Justify who realised a US$1.05 million (AU$1.56 million) final bid. Buying on behalf of an undisclosed interest, Knight indicated the March 22 foal, who was consigned by Bryan and Gray Lyster's Ashview Farm, will remain in the US and sent to Graham Motion.
“She is a queen of a filly and we are delighted to get her,” said Knight.
“She (Hip 255) is a queen of a filly and we are delighted to get her.” - Richard Knight
Knight also signed the ticket on Hip 192, a US$1.3 million (AU$1.93 million) Constitution colt, Hip 198, an Omaha Beach (USA) colt that brought US$400,000 (AU$594,200) and Hip 200, a US$300,000 (AU$445,600) colt by Twirling Candy (USA). Later in the day, he secured Hip 297, a filly by Gun Runner (USA), for US$1.1 million (AU$1.63 million).
Reflecting on the activity at Keeneland thus far, he said, “The sale has been very strong. If you want to buy the good ones, I'm afraid you will have to step up and pay for them.”
Out of Graded stakes-placed Fully Living (USA) (Unbridled’s Song {USA}), the bay is a half to Graded-placed horses Untreated (USA) (Nyquist {USA}) and Ballet Dancing (USA) (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}). Fully Living is a daughter of Half A.P. (USA) (Pulpit {USA}), making her a half-sister to Champion Juvenile Filly Halfbridled (USA) (Unbridled {USA}).

“She is perfect,” said an emotional Gray Lyster. “Everyone came around to look at her and she just walked out and looked around like she was the queen the whole time.”
Gun Runner filly completes Knight's day
Bloodstock agent Richard Knight completed a productive day in the office with the US$1.1-million (AU$1.63-million) purchase of a filly by Gun Runner (Hip 297). It was the agent's fifth purchase of the session and third seven-figure acquisition as he continued his buying spree for an undisclosed client.
“She is by Gun Runner, who is a stallion we very much earmarked coming over here,” Knight said of the yearling's appeal. “The filly is a sister to a good horse, the dam was a good horse herself. And this horse was a lovely physical.”
“The filly (Hip 297) is a sister to a good horse (Wicked Halo), the dam (Just Wicked) was a good horse herself. And this horse was a lovely physical.” - Richard Knight
The yearling is out of Graded stakes winner Just Wicked (USA) (Tapit {USA}) and her sister Wicked Halo (USA) won the G2 Prioress S. at Saratoga this summer.
“She's going to stay over here and she will go to (trainer) Graham Motion,” Knight said.
Knight, who made five purchases at the Arqana August sale last month on behalf of the same client, said he was bidding within the game plan despite a competitive market at Keeneland.
“We only followed one in yesterday and we underbid it,” Knight said. “We value them and if they go over our evaluation, then we let them go. We try to be competitive on the ones we want. We've had a successful day today, but that's us finished.”
Knight's Arqana acquisitions were led by a filly by Wootton Bassett (GB) (Lot 202) purchased for €750,000 (AU$1.11 million).
Into Mischief filly draws US$1.35m for Upson Downs
Unlike some of the other consignors offering their vast wares in Book 1, Upson Downs Farm made it to the ring with a single yearling, Hip 359, a filly by Into Mischief (USA). However, what the consignment lacked in raw numbers, it more than made up for in fire power with the daughter of multiple stakes placegetter Nina Fever (USA) (Borrego {USA}) reeling in a US$1.35 million (AU$2.01 million) final bid from Don Adam's Courtland Farm LLC.
“She's been class from the time she was born,” said Upson Downs Farm's Alex Rankin. “We're over the moon. This is the first seven-figure yearling for Upson Downs in 35 years of consigning. I'm still trying to process it.”
“We're over the moon. This (Hip 359) is the first seven-figure yearling for Upson Downs in 35 years of consigning. I'm still trying to process it.” - Alex Rankin
He added, “Mr Adams is a great owner and he will give her a great shot. So, it couldn't be a better situation.”
Stemming from humble beginnings, Nina Fever was claimed by Michael Hui for US$40,000 (AU$59,500) at Keeneland in 2011. Injured shortly thereafter and retired, the filly was sent to Upson Downs to pursue her second career as a broodmare. The now 14-year-old mare, who is already responsible for G1 Frizette S. winner Nickname (USA) (Scat Daddy {USA}), was sold in foal to Constitution for US$500,000 (AU$742,300) at Fasig-Tipton November Sale last season after foaling this filly.
“I just feel so honored to be able to sell her,” said Rankin. “It's for a good client, Michael Hui, who claimed the dam–Nina Fever. We've raised these horses for him and it's been a wonderful relationship. I'm so glad he got the money because he deserves it and the filly deserves it.”

Repole full tilt at Keeneland September
Buying no less than 13 yearlings in partnership during Monday's session, Mike Repole wasn't quite done on Day 2 as he returned to partner on an additional 11 purchases on Tuesday, headed by a pair of US$1.1-million (AU$1.63-million) colts. In quick succession, Repole, accompanied by agent Jacob West and trainer Todd Pletcher, purchased Hip 364, a colt by City Of Light (USA) in tandem with Vinnie Viola's St. Elias Stables and West Point Thoroughbreds. Not long afterward, he joined forces with Coolmore to secure a son of Curlin (USA), offered as Hip 369.
The former, who is out of unraced Numero d'Oro (USA) (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}), was consigned by Rosilyn Polan's Sunday Morning Farm. Polan sold last year's topper, also by City Of Light, in addition to the colt's half-bother Wit (USA) (Practical Joke {USA}). A dual Grade 3 winner and third in the G1 Champagne S., the colt is campaigned by Repole and trained by Pletcher.

“Watching him go around there, that was my Grade 1 win. I was so proud of him,” said Polan. “They've done so well with Wit and to send the horse to Todd Pletcher. I love those guys (the buyers).”
Five hips later, Repole was back in action for another US$1.1- million (AU$1.63-million) purchase, this one consigned by Hinkle Farms. The chestnut is out of Graded stakes placegetter Orbolution (USA) (Orb {USA}), who was also developed by Pletcher.
“He's a big, Classic horse and we think he can be a two-turn type,” said Repole. “Coolmore and I do some business together, and we both landed on the same one and we both use Todd Pletcher, so it made sense.”

Repole also secured Hip 336, a colt by Omaha Beach out of Grade 1 stakes-placed Maybellene (USA) (Looking At Lucky {USA}). The February 15 foal represents the family of Elusive Quality (USA). Secured for US$900,000 (AU$1.34 million), the colt was consigned by Clarkland Farm.
“I had planned on stopping at US$600,000 (AU$890,000),” Repole admitted. “I just kept looking at him. He was probably about US$200,000 (AU$296,700) more than I wanted to spend, but honestly, if that colt was a Curlin, an Uncle Mo or an Into Mischief, I think he would have been the sale's topper. He just looked amazing.”
Seeming to still have money to spend after the Curlin colt, Repole teamed up with another Pletcher client, Robert and Lawana Low, for Hip 370, a colt by Into Mischief out of stakes winner Osare (USA) (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}), a half-sister to the late Champion Arrogate (USA). Consigned by Denali Stud, agent for Bridlewood Farm, the February 1 foal brought US$775,000 (AU$1.15 million).

Into Mischief Colt scores for Blum
The stallion-making partnership group of SF Racing/ Starlight/Madaket made its biggest purchase of the Keeneland September Sale so far when paying US$1.05 million (AU$1.56 million) to acquire a colt by Into Mischief (Hip 328). The yearling, who was consigned by Bridie Harrison on behalf of breeder Peter Blum, is out of Graded stakes winner Magical Feeling (USA) (Empire Maker {USA}).
“Bridie Harrison told me he was very special from day one,” said Blum. “She loved him and she told me he was going to bring a lot of money. So I really wasn't worried about the reserve. It's especially rewarding to see this horse go to SF.”
Having bred Magical Feeling’s unraced dam and bred and raced her second dam, Blum admitted it was emotional to sell horses he had such a long association with.

“It's emotional,” he said. “Bridie and I have been together for 40 years. And she has to get all the credit.”
Blum sent four horses through the ring Tuesday. Hip 247, a full brother to G1 Kentucky Derby winner Authentic (USA) (Into Mischief {USA}), sold for US$800,000 (AU$1.19 million) to Hideyuki Mori, while Hip 237, a Street Sense (USA) half-sister to Society (USA) (Gun Runner {USA}) sold for US$725,000 (AU$1.08 million).
“We've sold all of our horses,” Blum said. “I was disappointed earlier. I would have liked to have seen the half-sister to Society sell better, but we take it as it comes. When you've been doing it as long as I have, it is what it is.”

The SF/Starlight/Madaket partnership purchased four yearlings on Tuesday, three were colts by Into Mischief. In addition to Hip 328, the group acquired Hip 241 for US$825,000 (AU$1.23 million) and Hip 335 for US$450,000 (AU$668,200), as well as Hip 330, a son of Curlin, for US$350,000 (AU$519,700).
Through two sessions, the group has purchased seven horses for a total of US$4,560,000 (AU$6.77 million).
Summer Wind still blowing strong
It's been quite a summer for Jane Lyon and her Summer Wind Farm breeding program. It started off with her sensational homebred Flightline (USA) (Tapit {USA}), whom she owns in partnership, winning the G1 Met Mile in June.
In August, the horsewoman sold an Uncle Mo (USA) colt for US$1.5 million (AU$2.23 million) to some of her Flightline partners, staying in for a piece herself, and just 10 days ago Flightline dropped the jaws of the entire racing community when taking the G1 TVG Pacific Classic by nearly 20 lengths.
Lyon's hot streak continued at Keeneland on Tuesday when she sold a Quality Road filly (Hip 302) to Larry Best for US$1.3 million (AU$1.93 million).
“It's a little bittersweet,” said Lyon, who is known for her deep love for her horses. “I hate giving my fillies up. I hope she does a wonderful job for Mr Best, and I hope that he has all the success in the world with her.”
Hip 302 was the first horse Best bid on through the first two days of selling and he was quite pleased to secure her.

“Quality Road speaks for himself,” said Best. “It's a great page. You sense from (Monday) the value of the Quality Road bloodline. This particular filly just was beautiful with a great pedigree…I'm thrilled.”
Lyon acquired Hip 302's stakes-winning dam Key To My Heart (USA) (Galileo {Ire}) for US$1.75 million (AU$2.6 million) at the 2018 Keeneland November Sale in foal to War Front (USA).
“We have been very blessed to have a horse like Flightline come out of our breeding program,” the always humble Lyon said. “We just hope to continue to have healthy mares and foals, who produce and perform.”

Orbolution continues to reward Hinkle family
Stakes winner and Graded stakes placegetter Orbolution (USA) (Orb {USA}) has been the gift that keeps on giving for the Hinkle family. They bred the mare and sold her to StarLadies Racing for US$370,000 (AU$549,300) at Keeneland September back in 2016.
She was sent through the ring at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton July Horses of Racing Age Sale after a successful racing career, where the Hinkles bought her back for US$325,000 (AU$482,500). They bred her to Curlin for her first foal and the resulting colt (Hip 369) summoned US$1.1 million (AU$1.63 million) from the powerhouse partnership of Coolmore's M.V. Magnier and Repole Stable. He will be trained by Todd Pletcher, who conditioned his first and second dams.
“You never expect US$1 million (AU$1.48 million),” said Hinkle Farms' Tom Hinkle. “My daughter Ann Archer does a great job and my partners are my brothers Buck and Henry. We are in it and are glad to be rewarded.”
The breeder and consignor continued, “He was a nice foal. He is a really smart horse. He just does everything the right way. We have never had any problems with him. He is just a really neat horse to be around.”
Whisper Hill and Three Chimneys partner on familiar family
Whisper Hill Farm and Three Chimneys teamed up at last year's Fasig-Tipton November Sale to buy out Three Chimneys' previous partner Hill 'n' Dale on Hip 331's dam Magical World (USA) (Distorted Humor {USA}), who topped the sale at US$5.2 million (AU$7.72 million), and they reunited Tuesday to secure her son by Quality Road for US$1.1 million (AU$1.63 million). The colt was sold by Hill 'n' Dale as part of the continued dissolution of their partnership with Three Chimneys.

“He is an awesome individual,” said Todd Quast, advisor to Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm. “He is such a big, stout horse, but he moves really light. We bought the mare in November, so we have the family, and Three Chimneys wanted to go in.”
Three Chimneys acquired Magical World, a daughter of G1 Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Pleasant Home (USA) (Seeking the Gold {USA}), privately and later partnered with Hill 'n' Dale on the mare.
She was one of several members of the partnership to sell at last year's Fasig-Tipton November Sale, including her three-time Grade 1-winning daughter Guarana (USA) (Ghostzapper {USA}). Hill 'n' Dale's John Sikura bought Three Chimneys out on Guarana for US$4.4 million (AU$6.53 million) that evening.

“Three Chimneys was supportive and a co-owner,” Sikura said. “They were big-time horses with quality pedigrees. That's what the major guys are looking for. He is a two-turn colt out of a proven producer, by a leading sire. No surprise really. After US$1 million (AU$1.48 million) it's just who you have (as bidders). It's been a very good sale and a good end to the partnership. Three Chimneys are great breeders. They did a great job, and everybody was rewarded.”
Another seven-figure horse for BC Stables
The fledgling BC Stables of John Bellinger and Brian Coelho had its second seven-figure purchase of the Keeneland September Sale when trainer D. Wayne Lukas went to US$1 million (AU$1.48 million) to acquire a colt by Into Mischief (Hip 363) from the Taylor Made Sales Agency consignment.
The yearling is out of Not in Jest (USA) (Unbridled’s Song {USA}), a full sister to Grade 1 winner Cross Traffic (USA).
“He is going to be quick,” Lukas said of the colt. “He's very, very typey. The thing I liked about him was that they must have shown him 100 and some times and he never took a wrong step.”
“He's (Hip 363) very, very typey. The thing I liked about him was that they must have shown him 100 and some times and he never took a wrong step.” - D. Wayne Lukas
Lukas has signed the ticket on four yearlings on behalf of BC Stables, including a US$1.15-million (AU$1.71-million) son of Quality Road (Hip 176) purchased during Monday's first session of the auction. He also purchased a pair of yearlings for the operation at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale last month.
“It makes it a lot easier to get up at 3am, you bet,” Lukas said of the new acquisitions. “I am excited about their program and where I can take them. They want to play at the top. I don't know when I've had a nicer bunch of 2-year-olds, when you put the Saratoga horses in with these.”
Lukas credited a strong purse structure for the high demand for horses.
“It's very solid, especially in the middle,” he said of the market. “It seems like it is so solid in that US$350,000-US$400,000 range…The purse structure is so strong right now, getting US$70-80,000 for a maiden win, if he runs and stays strong, you'll be able to recoup your money. I think that's what is driving the market.”
But Lukas admitted going up against the many high-profile partnerships could make his job at the sales tougher.
D. Wayne Lukas | Image courtesy of Keeneland
“The thing that is getting difficult is when they start holding hands – then it gets tough,” he said. “They get a lot of people involved and at a high level, but every time I see them holding hands, I think that's not too good,” he said with a laugh.

The Group 3-winning mare Estonian Princess (Snitzel) was the prize lot of the Inglis Digital September (Early) Online Sale as Szeto Yuk Ting paid $375,000 for the mare and she was one of 11 lots sold on the platform on Wednesday for $100,000 or more.
The price-tag handed TJS Bloodstock’s Simon Raleigh a quick turn on the investment he made on the mare when he purchased her for $200,000 16 months ago at the Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale.
Group 3 winner Estonian Princess was offered in foal to So You Think (NZ) | Image courtesy of Inglis Digital
When he purchased her in 2021, she was carrying a foal by Coolmore Stud-based sire So You Think (NZ) and Raleigh will offer the filly at one of Inglis’ yearling sales next year.
“It’s pretty amazing really, to get that sort of turnaround in an investment like this, and hopefully the yearling sells really well next year and will bring the buyer of the mare tonight a great deal of joy, it’s just a great result all round,’’ Raleigh said.
“I’m thrilled with the outcome and I hope the buyer is just as thrilled as I am.
“The bidding certainly went on, I was watching on my phone and it just kept going. I’ve both bought and sold with Inglis Digital and I think it’s a fantastic platform and it avoids all the complications and costs involved in a live auction. I’m very happy with the platform.’’

The mare will now head to Newgate Farm to foal down her Zoustar foal before a decision is made as to which stallion she will visit next.
“We will discuss those options with the team at Newgate but it will be one of the stallions based there,’’ Orbis representative Yuk Ting Szeto said.
“From what we could see on the page and the foals she’s left so far, we knew we would have to pay quite a bit of money for her, but she is definitely worth it.’’
“From what we could see on the page and the foals she’s (Estonian Princess) left so far, we knew we would have to pay quite a bit of money for her, but she is definitely worth it.’’ - Yuk Tin Szeto
Catalogued as Lot 357, the daughter of Snitzel’s three career wins were headed by a victory in the G3 James HB Carr S. and her only foal to race, Prince Of Tallin (Pride Of Dubai), is a winner.
In 2019, she produced a colt by Flying Artie, who was purchased by Anthony Freedman Racing and Julian Blaxland Bloodstock for $50,000 at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale in 2021. He is now named Kodiak and is unraced.
The mare is one of five winners out of winning US-bred mare Meet My Sis (USA) (Prized {USA}) and she is also the dam of G2 Sandown Guineas winner Schilling (Bianconi {USA}).

Further afield, this is the same family as Listed-winning duo Astara (NZ) (Dalghar {Fr}) and Brave Angel (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}).
Felicia secured for $330,000
Meanwhile, the second-highest priced lot of the day was Felicia (Unencumbered), a winner of the 2020 G3 How Now S. and she was purchased by Joe Stambe of Spartus Bloodstock for $330,000 and she will be covered by his stallion Signore Fox.
“I thought she would sell for $250,000-$300,000 but when the bug gets into you, sometimes it’s hard to stop. At the end of the day, you have to look at the weanling prices and yearling prices and weigh all of that up and they’re all very high at the moment, so I had to keep going," said Stambe.

“I’ve bought a few horses off Digital before, it’s easy to sit at home and go through everything and buy. It’s great.’’
Felicia was offered by Gerard Ballantyne on behalf of the mare’s ownership group and he was delighted with Wednesday’s result.
“It’s a great result. We’re really, really happy with it. To get that sort of result, it’s just absolutely fantastic,’’ Ballantyne said.
“This was my first experience in selling a horse on Inglis Digital and I must congratulate all of you, it was absolutely seamless, the advice we got and the assistance we got from (Inglis Insurance Manager and Bloodstock Consultant) Sinead (Flannery) over the journey was spot on.
“It’s ($330,000 for Felicia) a great result. We’re really, really happy with it. To get that sort of result, it’s just absolutely fantastic.’’ - Gerard Ballantyne
“For first-timers there was that sense of comfort with the whole process, it was well explained and very simple to implement everything.’’
Out of the unraced Shamardal (USA) mare Los Feliz, who has produced a further three winners. This is the same family as New Zealand Group 2 winner Real Success (Success Express {NZ}), the dam of G1 Queensland Oaks winner Vouvray (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) and Listed scorer Bolton (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}).
Monegal makes $225,000
Cunningham Thoroughbreds and Clarke Bloodstock snared 10-time winning Lope De Vega (Ire) mare Monegal for $225,000 on Wednesday.
The mare’s decade of career victories includes a triumph in the G3 Epona S. which saw her earn over $686,895 in prizemoney.

Monegal was a shrewd investment for her trainer Theresa Bateup, who paid for $3000 at the Inglis Scone Yearling Sale in 2017 and she is out of placed Rock Of Gibraltar (Ire) mare Sublissime (Ire).
Sublissime herself is a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Morshdi (GB) (Slip Anchor {GB}) and Group 3 scorer Ilitshe (Fastnet Rock), while this is the same family as multiple Group 1-winning Champion mare Habibti (GB) (Habitat {USA}).
$25,000 for Meredith
The September (Early) Sale also included an eight-lot fundraiser offering for injured jockey Elissa Meredith, who is recovering from a race fall at Gunnedah in July.
Organised by trainer Louise Munce and the NSW Trainers’ Association, the items – which ranged from racing and sporting memorabilia to raceday events and a Inglis Hotel package – grossed a collective $25,000.
Elissa Meredith
Meredith’s family said in a statement: “We are so grateful for the ongoing support from the entire racing industry.
“We watched the auction as a family live on the Inglis Digital website and we are really humbled by the support. There were plenty of tears every time a new bid was placed.
“There are many that we’d like to thank with special mention to the NSWTA who really stepped up and of course Inglis, who allowed the auction to take place and the promotion by them was very kind.

“Also to those who donated and placed bids, from Elissa we say a huge thanks and we wish we could hug everyone. In so many ways, the $25,000 raised will greatly assist Elissa in her recovery.
“Thanks again to everyone involved – we feel special that Elissa is involved in such a wonderful industry.’’

Magic Millions release quality 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale catalogue
4 min read
Written by Lydia Symonds
A total of 140 horses have been catalogued for the 2022 edition of the Magic Millions Gold Coast 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale which gets underway on Sunday, October 25.
There will be four breezes to accompany the sale, kicking off at Seymour in Victoria on September 30, before moving to Newcastle on October 4 and the concluding breeze ups will be held at Eagle Farm on October 6 and 21 respectively. Inspections for the sale will then take place at the Magic Millions complex between October 22 and October 24.
Since its inception, the sale has unearthed some smart horses, including 2021 G1 Coolmore Classic winner Krone (Eurozone), who was purchased at the sale by Roll The Dice Racing for $120,000 in 2017, meanwhile, 2020 G1 Stradbroke H. winner Tyzone (Written Tycoon) was snapped up for $60,000 at the 2015 edition.

However, perhaps the most famous graduate of the sale is Shocking, who was bought by Eales Racing for $64,000 in 2007 and would go on to win the G1 Melbourne Cup and G1 Australian Cup, earning himself a place on the Rich Hill Stud roster in the process.
In recent times the sale has also proved a gold mine for international buyers and this came to the fore once again when Star of Yiu Cheung (Casino Prince), who was bought at the sale for $50,000, added a fourth stakes race to his record when he defended his Listed Macau Gold Cup crown on August 28.
Other recent international stars to have graduated from the Gold Coast 2YOs In Training Sale include Singapore stars Top Knight (Zoustar) and Celavi (Fighting Sun) and Macau Guineas winner Hostwin Saturn (Stratum), who was purchased by Jason Tam and Gary Moore for $240,000.

At this year’s sale a total of 68 individual sires are represented including All Too Hard (5 lots), Better Than Ready (2), Capitalist (2), Deep Field (1), Fastnet Rock (1), Flying Artie (1), I Am Invincible (3), Lonhro (1), Pierro (2), Power (GB) (4), Rubick (5), Russian Revolution (2), Shalaa (Ire) (4), Snitzel (1), Spirit Of Boom (1), Star Turn (6), Super One (2), Toronado (2), and Written Tycoon (1).
A List Stud finished the 2021 sale as the leading vendor by average, selling five 2-year-olds for an average of $221,000, finishing with an aggregate of $1.05 million and they will offer a total 18 horses at this year’s sale, including Lot 32, a filly by I Am Invincible out of placed Galileo (Ire) mare Defy The Odds (GB), making her a half-sister to G1 South Australian Derby winner Leicester (Wanted).
Meanwhile, O’Gorman Racing, who finished behind them in second, will offer two lots, headed by a Capitalist (Lot 45) gelding out of the Listed winner Exclusive Lass (Nicconi).
“The quality of the catalogue is fantastic. Our vendors know what it takes to offer top-quality prospects, which is reflected in the outstanding racetrack results of our graduates,” Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said.

“Over the past five years this sale has produced 29 per cent more stakes winners, 33 per cent more winners and 46 per cent more wins than Australia’s nearest competitor.”
In a boost for buyers 103 lots are BOBS Eligible, 61 are nominated to the Magic Millions Race Series, seven are nominated for the G1 Golden Slipper S., three for the G1 Blue Diamond S. and 10 lots are fully paid up for QTIS, while 17 lots are Super VOBIS nominated.
In winning the Listed Balaklava Cup, the Will Clarken-trained Noname Lane provided his Rosemont Stud-based sire Shamus Award with his 20th stakes winner.
Bred by Rosemont Stud, the 6-year-old gelding is out of six-time winning Show A Heart mare Sovereign Charm, whose four winners also include Noname Lane’s three-time Group 3-winning sister Sovereign Award.
Further back this is the same family as Listed winner Potential (Southern Appeal {USA}) and she is herself a half-sister to Listed-placed mare Talk To Angels (Don’t Say Halo {USA}) - the dam of 2001 Listed WATC Gimcrack S. winner Magic Heaven (Magic Ring {Ire}).
Noname Lane and Sovereign Award are two of 11 winners bred on the Shamus Award / Show A Heart cross and they also include a further stakes winner in Listed scorer Enchanted Heart.

Noname Lane lands Balaklava Cup
The Will Clarken-trained Noname Lane (Shamus Award) broke through at stakes level for the first time with a victory in the Listed Balaklava Cup on Wednesday.
The 6-year-old gelding defeated his stablemate Zoulah (Zoustar) by 0.5l, while Oh Mo (Uncle Mo {USA}) was a further 0.4l away in third.
Bred by Rosemont Stud, the gelding is out of six-time-winning Show A Heart mare Sovereign Charm making him a brother to three-time Group 3 winner Sovereign Award.
Ninth Northern Hemisphere-bred winner for Zoustar
Zoustar sired his ninth Northern Hemisphere-bred winner on Tuesday when the James Ferguson-trained Zoology (GB) impressively got off the mark at the first time of asking at Yarmouth.
The 2-year-old colt surged clear to beat Ararat (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) by a decisive 4l and Proverb (Ire) (Harry Angel {Ire}) was a further 1.4l away in third.
Purchased by David Redvers on behalf of owners Qatar Bloodstock for 90,000gns (AU$153,700) at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale in 2020, the colt is out of the German Listed-winning Dream Ahead (USA) mare Peach Melba (GB), meaning he is bred on the same cross as last season’s G2 VRC Sires’ Produce S. winner Lightsaber.
Hayes, Waterhouse to attend The Queen’s funeral
Hall Of Fame trainers David Hayes and Gai Waterhouse will travel to London for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
Hayes’ association with The Queen is a long one. He trained Bold Sniper (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), who won two races in Melbourne, for her.
“It was a big surprise, but a big honour,” Hayes told Racing.com.
“She’s been to Lindsay Park, and I actually opened the door for her that day and closed the door as a young fellow,” he said.
“In recent times, I trained for The Queen with Bold Sniper, and I still think I am the only person to train a couple of winners for her in Australia.
“Through that association, I would’ve spoken to her a number of times on the phone.”
Waterhouse also trained for The Queen, sending out her horse Carlton House (USA) (Street Cry {Ire}) to finish third in the 2014 edition of the G1 Queen Elizabeth S. at Randwick.
“I knew The Queen for many years and I am deeply honoured to have received the invitation from the palace to attend the funeral,” Waterhouse told News Corp. “This was only arranged today because my phone has been playing up.
“I had a number of calls from England in the last couple of days, but I didn't want to take those calls in case they were scammers.”
‘Vinnie’ filly salutes at Sandown
The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Tajneed (I Am Invincible) posted a tough win at Sandown.
The Emirates Park homebred filly won the 1300-metre contest by 0.3l under Damien Oliver.
“She’s a lovely style of filly, she’s got a bit of length and scope about her, particularly for a daughter of I Am Invincible, they usually are speed type of horses,” Oliver said on Racing.com.
Tajneed is the first foal from unraced mare Roudha (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a daughter of two-time Group 1 victress Melito (Redoute’s Choice), who went to stud in Ireland after selling to Coolmore for $1.65 million at the 2012 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.
Emirates Park purchased Roudha for 500,000gns (AU$900,000) at the 2016 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1.
Tajneed’s win was one of three on the day for Yarraman Park’s Champion Sire I Am Invincible. He also had Great Barrier Reef score in Race 2 at Warwick Farm and All England took out Race 6 at Sandown-Hillside.
The Deputy delivers on debut
Nicconi colt The Deputy (NZ) made the perfect start to his career when he landed the Ladbrokes Mates Mode Mdn Plate (1300 metres) at Sandown-Hillside under Ben Melham.
“He’s still very raw, but he’s got a nice future I think,” Melham told Racing.com.
The 3-year-old was purchased by Mick Price Racing for $260,000 from the Newhaven Park draft at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
The Deputy is from the family of Group 3 winner Scratchy Bottom (Sebring), Listed victress Danasia (Danehill {USA}) and Group 1 winners Gypsy Goddess (NZ) (Tarzino {NZ}) and Zabrasive (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}).
Snitzel’s three-quarter brother breaks maiden
Following an impressive debut at Warwick Farm last month, the beautifully bred Rediener (Redoute’s Choice) notched his first win in Race 1 at Warwick Farm.
Racing at the same track, the Chris Waller-trained 3-year-old colt outlasted the fast-finishing Ring Ahoy (Sebring) by 0.5l in the 1400-metre affair.
“It was a good performance today. He is still an inexperienced horse learning his craft. Losing momentum, coming through a narrow gap, and hitting the line gives confidence as he heads to stiffer opposition,” stable representative, Charlie Duckworth, told Sky Racing.

Rediener was bred by Neil Werrett, who remains in the ownership alongside Max Whitby.
The colt is a three-quarter brother to super sire Snitzel and a half-brother to Listed winner Rathlin (Fastnet Rock).
Rediener is one of the 23 foals from the final crop of Redoute’s Choice.
Six for Waller
Champion trainer Chris Waller enjoyed a six-timer on Wednesday.
At Warwick Farm, Rediener (Redoute’s Choice), Great Barrier Reef (I Am Invincible) and Democracy Manifest (Flying Artie) all triumphed, while at Sandown, Jupitus (Sebring) broke through for his second victory. And at Doomben, Gambu (NZ) (Redwood {GB}) and Otyrar (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) both found their way into the winner’s stall.
Twelve rivals for Nature Strip
The G2 The Shorts has attracted a quality field of sprinters, headlined by Australian Horse of the Year Nature Strip (Nicconi).
Chris Waller’s 8-year-old will jump from barrier two under James McDonald and faces stiff competition from arch-rival Eduardo (Host {Chi}) and recent Group 1 winner Mazu (Maurice {Jpn}).
Nature Strip | Image courtesy of Bronwen Healy
“Eduardo has the run under his belt, and normally he would have us covered in this race so we might be going in as the underdog on Saturday,” Waller said.
Nature Strip has won five of his 10 first-up assignments and is a six-time winner from 14 starts at Randwick.
Zaaki and Anamoe set to square off
The G1 George Main S. shapes as somewhat of a precursor to this year's G1 Cox Plate, with superstars Zaaki (GB) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}) and Anamoe (Street Boss {USA}) to do battle in Saturday’s $1 million contest.
With James McDonald sticking with Anamoe, Tommy Berry takes over on Zaaki.
Eight of the 10 runners in the 1600-metre race are Group 1 winners.
Chris Waller has two runners - Fangirl (Sebring) and Hinged (Worthy Cause) - while Montefilia (Kermadec {NZ}) will resume from a spell.
Meanwhile, legendary jockey Malcolm Johnston, told News Corp Anamoe reminds him of the great Kingston Town (Bletchingly).
“Anamoe is so exciting to watch, he’s almost rude and arrogant the way he goes about winning his races, there’s a bit of the ‘King’ (Kingston Town) about this horse,” he said.
Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes favourite fails to make field
I Wish I Win (NZ) (Savabeel), who is the punter’s elect for Saturday’s G1 Sir Rupert Clarke S. at Caulfield, is the second emergency for the $1 million feature.
I Wish I Win (NZ) | Image courtesy of NZ Racing Desk
Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr have three runners engaged – Ayrton (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}), stable newcomer Chaillot (Testa Rossa) and Age Of Chivalry (NZ) (He’s Remarkable {NZ}), however the latter is the third emergency.
Gold Trip ‘ready to run big race’, says Eustace
Ciaron Maher and David Eustace will decide on Thursday where imported gelding Gold Trip (Fr) (Outsrip {GB}) will run on Saturday, after accepting for both the G3 Foundation Cup at Caulfield and the G3 Kingston Town S. at Randwick.
“We haven't decided 100 per cent yet where he goes,” Eustace told News Corp.
“A bit of a line ball, we have a bit longer to work out.
“We really do feel he’s absolutely ready to run a big race and win wherever he goes.”
Moir test for Extremely Lucky
South Australian sprinter Extremely Lucky (Extreme Choice) will get the chance to become a Group 1 winner, with trainer Will Clarken confirming the 4-year-old will contest Friday week’s G1 Moir S. at The Valley.
The emerging star failed on heavy going in the Listed Carlyon S. last time out, but has since pleased his trainer in a jump-out at Morphettville.
“I’m still sitting on the fence with whether I did the right thing running him last start because the track was very Heavy, it was deteriorating and it looked like it was quicksand back and wide,” Clarken told SEN.
Extremely Lucky | Image courtesy of Clarken Racing
“I just love how it's all unfolding for him.
“I keep looking at the Moir and I just can’t see something that’s a standout - you look at the futures betting and he's on the second line with Coolangatta and you could argue both horses were below their best.”
Ben Melham will ride Extremely Lucky in the Moir.

Looking Ahead - September 15
3 min read
Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
For Thursday's races, we hone in on a trio of interesting 3-year-olds; two at bet365 Geelong and one at Kembla Grange. Our first runner at Geelong is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Mizzy (Zoustar), while the second is a half-brother to one of the current stars of the Australian turf, Anamoe (Street Boss {USA}). Our runner at Kembla Grange is a well-related Russian Revolution filly.
Cincinnati Dreamer, 3-year-old filly (Written Tycoon x Missy Cummings {Magnus})
Bred by Robert Crabtree, this filly was consigned to the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft at the 2021 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, where she was bought by Mick Price Racing for $600,000.
Cincinnati Dreamer as a yearling | Image courtesy of Inglis
Cincinnati Dreamer is from a Listed winner, who has thrown Group 1 victress Mizzy. The filly’s second dam, Lady Knockout (Serheed {USA}), was a three-time Listed winner, and her dam, Prime Again (Marooned {GB}) was a Group 2 winner, who has also produced Listed victor Young Lionel (Blackfriars).
Jamie Kah is aboard Cincinnati Dreamer for Price and Mick Kent Jnr.
Dartboard, 3-year-old gelding (Shooting To Win x Anamato {Redoute’s Choice})
Dartboard was bred by Godolphin Australia and they race the gelding, who is a half-brother to multiple Group 1-winning star Anamoe.
Not only has Anamato produced Anamoe, she herself was a Group 1 winner. Other stakes winners from this family include Group 1 winner Drum (Marauding {NZ}), Listed winner Port Watch (Star Watch) and Listed winner Roanoke Boy (Ideal Planet).
Damien Oliver has the ride on the James Cummings-trained 3-year-old.
Shooting To Win | Standing at Oakland Park Stud
Meanwhile, in the same race, 4-year-old mare Queen Of The Green (Written Tycoon) out of Karuta Queen (Not A Single Doubt), is slated to make her debut.
Bred by Strawberry Hill Stud, she was purchased by Sheamus Mills Bloodstock (FBAA) for $1.5 million from the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Magadan, 3-year-old colt (Russian Revolution x Tempting Delight {Northern Meteor})
Bred by Go Bloodstock, this colt was offered by Newgate Farm at the 2021 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. He was purchased for $150,000 by Wattle Bloodstock / Stephen Gray Racing.
Magadan as a yearling | Image courtesy of Inglis
Magadan’s second dam, Hansuyen (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}), has thrown Group 2 winner Champagne Harmony (Choisir). Brilliant mare Champagne (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}), who won two Group 1s and has produced two stakes winners hails from this family, so too does dual Group 1 victress St Reims (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}).
The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt has won two of his five trials and will be ridden by Tommy Berry.
Looking Back
Surf On Turf (Not A Single Doubt) ran on well to finish third at Warwick Farm, before As Time Goes By (Deep Impact {Jpn}) placed second at Sandown. Our final runner, Pereille (Fastnet Rock), ran third at Warwick Farm.
