Looking Ahead - October 12

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

On Wednesday at Warwick Farm, we’ve selected a Capitalist 2-year-old colt in the James Harron colours and a 3-year-old filly from an American Grade 1 winner. At Ipswich, we look at a promising three-quarter brother to five-time Group 1 winner Shoot Out (High Chaparral {Ire}).

Mexico, 2-year-old colt (Capitalist x One More Tequila {Onemorenomore})

Any colt on debut in the Harron colours is worth a look, and this 2-year-old is among the very first juveniles of the new season to step out in race conditions. He’s the fourth foal from One More Tequila, who in turn is a daughter of the Gold Coast stakes winner Tequila Knowledge (Knowledge). On the dam side, there is a stack of European black type on this page, with Tequila Knowledge being a daughter of the top-ranking, Group 1-winning Italian mare Mariella (GB) (Sir Gaylord {USA}).

Apart from being cleverly named, Mexico was consigned to the 2022 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale by Newgate Farm, where he was bought by the James Harron Bloodstock Colt Partnership for $375,000.

He is trained at Randwick by Michael Freedman, and his only outing to date was a third in a trial at home on September 19. He has drawn the inside barrier in this debut with Tommy Berry.

Warwick Farm, Race 3, 1.55pm AEDT, Home Affairs @ Coolmore Plate, $55,000, 1200m

Kazou, 3-year-old filly (Zoustar x Cat Moves {USA} {Tale Of The Cat {USA}})

This filly was the only foal from the late Cat Moves (USA), who won the G1 Prioress S. at Belmont in the United States. She was also Group 1 placed, so a very good filly. Cat Moves was a half-sister to the Monmouth stakes winner Dance Hall Days (USA) (Seeking Daylight {USA}), and also the dam of the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Hootenanny (USA) (Quality Road {USA}).

Kazou was consigned by Coolmore to the 2021 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, and she sold to Chris Waller Racing and Guy Mulcaster Bloodstock for $200,000.

She is now trained by Chris Waller at Rosehill and she’s had two trials, the last of which resulted in a 6l win last week. She will have jockey Jason Collett in this debut from barrier 10.

Ipswich, Race 4, 3.36pm AEDT (2.26pm local), Sirromet Mdn, $37,000, 1100m

Daring Diego, 3-year-old gelding (Toronado {Ire} x Pentamerous {NZ} {Pentire {GB}})

This unraced gelding was bred and is raced by the Huddy family’s Peachester Lodge and he’s from the prolific breeder Pentamerous (NZ). As such, he is a three-quarter brother to both the five-time Group 1 winner Shoot Out and the Group 3 winner I’m A Princess (High Chaparral {Ire}).

He is also a half-brother to the Group 3 winner Cassandara Shadow (NZ) (Johannesburg {USA}), while Pentamerous herself was a half-sister to the G2 Craiglee S. winner Native Jazz (NZ) (St Hilarion {USA}).

Daring Diego has been very promising in the Eagle Farm stable of Tony Gollan. He was third in his only trial this preparation (September 27), which came after a winning jump-out a fortnight before. He has drawn ideally in barrier one for this debut and will have jockey Ben Thompson.

Looking Back

Looking Ahead was a mixed bag on Tuesday. At Echuca, Rylov (Russian Revolution) was third and My Brothers Keeper (Fiorente {Ire}) was a winner. At Newcastle, Senshi (Maurice {Jpn}) was unplaced.
