Saturday preview: Six things to keep an eye on

9 min read
The spring carnival is winding down but there is still plenty of interest all over the place with Group 1 action in Perth, stakes races at Ballarat and Pukekohe and a million-dollar contest at Kembla Grange.

G1 Railway S. - the Peters' silks again?

Bob and Sandra Peters have dominated the G1 Railway S. at Ascot, one of Perth's most prestigious events, in recent times - horses in their well known cerise and white colours were successful in each of the last four years; Western Empire (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}), Inspirational Girl (NZ) (Reliable Man {GB}), Regal Power (Pierro) and Galaxy Star (Redoute's Choice).

They have two acceptors on Saturday though one of those, Devoted (Xtravagant {NZ}), needs a bit of luck to gain a run as third emergency. Meanwhile, Treasured Star (Toronado {Ire}) is assured of a run and will be hard to beat off the back of her determined win in the G3 Asian Beau S. late last month.

Three of her rivals on Saturday were behind her that day, Startrade (Trade Fair {GB}) a game runner-up, while Alaskan God (Playing God) and Trix Of The Trade (Trade Fair {GB}) were both strong to the line.

Also likely to prove a strong form reference is the G2 Lee Steere Classic in which Karli's Karma (Deep Field) tried so hard. Notorious One (Animal Kingdom {USA}) was also good in that race, making up ground along the rails.

Or will it be a differing formline? Searchin' Roc's (Awesome Rock) backs up from a tough performance taking out last weekend's G3 R.J. Peters S., while Yonkers (USA) (Medaglia D'Oro {USA}) and Ironclad (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) bring solid eastern state form to the party.

Listed Ballarat Cup - Group 1 form to shine?

There is plenty of spring carnival form in this race including a couple of horses who boast decent performances at Group 1 level - the Chris Waller-trained Atishu (NZ) (Savabeel) who was a somewhat unlucky G1 Empire Rose S. fifth prior to her dominant G2 Matriarch S. victory, while the Mike Moroney-trained Bankers Choice (NZ) (Mongolian Khan) was close up in the G1 Mackinnon S.

That looks great form for a race of this nature and not surprisingly those two horses are fighting out favouritism.

Atishu, who also accepted for The Gong at Kembla Grange, is one of the three Waller runners in the race and they will be the first three in the yard as numbers 1, 2 and 3. Sharing topweight is Desert Icon (Fr) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who won the G2 JRA Cup over this distance in late September, and the popular mare Polly Grey (NZ) (Azamour {Ire}) whose fans will be hoping the rain arrives.

Lindsay Park took home the trophy last year with Zayydani (NZ) (Savabeel) and are hoping to do the same this time around when they saddle Dark Dream (All American), who has been racing well at Country Cup level.

Meanwhile, fresh on the scene having had only one run each this time in is Grandslam (Myboycharlie {Ire}) who was in the thick of things in the VOBIS Gold Star.

Both Foxy Frida (Foxwedge) and Flash Aah (Lucas Cranach {Ger}) line up in their second Ballarat Cups, the former last year running an excellent fifth from a horror draw, while the latter was unplaced - but is in nice form having run well in last weekend's Listed Cranbourne Cup.

The Gong - racing for $1 million

A $1 million race being run for the fourth time, Kembla Grange’s The Gong has attracted runners from a variety of form lines - horses who have been contesting stakes races in Melbourne and Sydney.

The sole interstate-trained horse is the toppie - the popular and honest gelding Just Folk (Magnus), who is bursting for a win having been a game runner-up at each of his last three starts in good races - the Listed Seymour Cup, the G3 Craven Plate and the Listed Cup Day Plate.

Not in quite such good form is Kolding (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}) but the triple Group 1 winner has been contesting stronger races - finding plenty of trouble when running in the G1 Cantala S. last time out.

Several runners have been taking their chance in other races of this ilk, including Promise Of Success (GB) (Dansili {GB}) who won The Invitation prior to ending up in the wrong part of the track in the G3 HKJC S. at Flemington, while Rustic Steel (Deep Field) took out the The Big Dance in which another of Saturday’s rivals, Surf Dancer (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), was fourth having worked hard on pace.

Hope In Your Heart (Dundeel {NZ}) tried hard when finishing a close-up fourth in The Golden Eagle, while Sky Lab (Real Impact {Jpn}) and Brutality (Shamus Award) both finished off nicely in The Hunter.

G2 WA Guineas - any future Perth stars amongst them?

Since being elevated to its current Group 2 status in 1981, the WA Guineas has proven to be a good hunting ground for quality performers - 19 of its winners in that time going on to further Group success including the Group 1 winners Ihtsahymn (Ihtiram {Ire}), Summer Beau (NZ) (Sky Filou {NZ}), Old Nick (Old Spice), Megatic (Danetime {Ire}), Playing God, Arcadia Queen (Pierro), Rare Flyer (Captain's Wings {USA}) and Importune (NZ).

It looks a classy lineup this year with plenty of winning form including the exciting unbeaten gelding Bustler (Playing God), who has so impressively been making his way through the classes - two weeks ago putting in a late dive to secure his first black-type victory in the Listed Fairetha S.

Bustler edges out a win in the Listed Fairetha S. on November 5 | Image courtesy of Western Racepix

Game in defeat in that race was All The King's Men (King's Troop), who has featured in the first two at each of his last five starts. Man Crush (Manhattan Rain) was out of the placings in the same race but did have to work hard, while Upper Limits (Exosphere) was strong to the line finishing third.

Meanwhile, the Stephen Miller-trained Saintorio (Oratorio) rises in class but just keeps racing well and the same can be said for the promising Demolish (Rich Enuff) - a big winner as an odds-on favourite at Class 1 level last time out.

Two nice fillies take on the boys - Amelia's Jewel (Siyouni {Fr}), who lost no fans when suffering the first defeat of her career in the Listed Burgess Queen S. last time out, while Linden Lady (No Nay Never {USA}) did a big job finishing off into a G3 Champions Fillies S. third having not long been out of maiden class.

Magic Millions Ballarat 2YO Classic - juveniles takes to the track

Six debutants take on seven horses who have already raced in this Magic Millions feature which boasts a winning purse of $250,000.

Of those to have already faced the starter, Gitalong (Zoustar) and Dubenenko (Russian Revolution) are the most experienced having each raced twice - the former a game fifth after working hard on pace in the Golden Gift, while the latter was good weaving through the field when fifth in the G3 Ottawa S.

That Flemington race provides another two runners for this - the unplaced Capulet (Extreme Choice), who did not have much luck and Tabata Set (Snitzel), who set up a good pace and eventually held on well for fourth. Meanwhile, Pure Paradise (Capitalist) has been freshened since finding the line well when second in the Listed Debutant S. at her first start.

Just the second runner for Widden Stud's Written By, Amantine is another Cranbourne jump-out winner; a $50,000 yearling from the family of the recent Golden Eagle winner I Wish I Win (NZ) (Savabeel). La Petite Angele is also by a first-season sire, Darley's Harry Angel {Ire}), and she was a successful pinhook, having been purchased for $30,000 as a weanling and then resold for $130,000 as a yearling.

Amantine, pictured as a yearling, is from the family of Golden Eagle winner I Wish I Win (NZ) | Image courtesy of Magic Millions

Eureka Stud's Spirit Of Boom has three runners including the first starters Malaboom, a Warwick Farm trial-winning $80,000 purchase out of the Listed Blue Diamond Preview winner Malasun (Red Ransom {USA}), and Sassy Boom, a Flemington jump-out-winning $155,000 yearling from the family of the G1 Golden Slipper S. winner Mossfun (Mossman).

Listed Challenge S. - New Zealand's 2YOs

Seven juveniles chase black type at Pukekohe on Saturday and such is the openness of the race that five of those are quoted at single-figure odds.

The four who have raced have all displayed ability, including Luberon (NZ) (Embellish {NZ}), the first winner for her Cambridge Stud-based first-season sire when leading throughout at Ruakaka in late September. Another by a Cambridge Stud inmate is Balance Of Power (NZ) (Almanzor {Fr}), the NZ$300,000 yearling whose Te Rapa debut third (after a slow start) caught the eye.

As a NZ$600,000 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale graduate, Ethereal Star (Snitzel) is the most expensive horse in the race and she was good to the line when second at her Te Rapa debut a couple of weeks ago. Her dual-Group-3-winning dam Eleonora (NZ) (Makfi {GB}) is a granddaughter of Ethereal (NZ) (Rhythm {USA}).

Meanwhile, a $200,000 purchase at the same sale was Cyclonic King (Exceed And Excel), who was green but good at his first start. He is out of the Group 2-placed city winner Lady Krovanh (Dehere {USA}).

Magic Millions Ballarat 2YO Classic background check

14 min read
Formerly known as the Magic Millions Ballarat 2YO Clockwise Classic and previously the state’s only race conducted in the clockwise direction, last year the contest reverted to Victoria’s usual left-handed direction and was renamed the Magic Millions Ballarat 2YO Classic. We take a deep dive into this year's race.

Cover image courtesy of Racing Photos

Run since 2012, the race has been evenly spread with five winners being male and five being female. However, in this year’s edition fillies make up 10 of the 13 runners, while the most represented sire is Eureka Stud’s Spirit Of Boom with three.

The Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained Cusack (Not A Single Doubt) landed last year’s renewal and they will attempt to win back-to-back runnings of the $250,000 contest when they saddle two prospects on Saturday.

Coolmore and Godolphin drafts up for grabs on Inglis Digital

Offerings from Coolmore and Godolphin headline the catalogue for the Inglis Digital November (Late) Online Sale, which is now open for bidding.

The Coolmore duo is made up of the Chris Waller-trained Basquiat (Snitzel) and Cool Kaap (American Pharoah {USA}).

Basquiat has been placed in Group 3 company on two occasions, while Cool Kaap has won one of his four career starts.

On the duo, Coolmore’s Racing Manager Charlie Spicer-Jenkins said: “Basquiat finished within a length of the winner in the G1 JJ Atkins in June and is twice placed in Group 3 company; he’s a very rare offering.

“Cool Kaap is a city winner out of a multiple-stakes winner, he has considerable upside. He has been competitive at distances ranging from 1200 metres to 1800 metres on both dry and wet ground so he’s very versatile.’’

Meanwhile, Godolphin will offer 19 racehorses unreserved in the auction including Criaderas (Lonhro), the four-time winner and four-times Group-placed gelding who most recently finished 0.7l third at Newcastle’s Metropolitan meeting last Saturday.

A lightly raced 6-year-old of just 21 starts, Criaderas has finished in the placings in the past two editions of the G2 Villiers H. Other notable entries in the Godolphin draft include half-brothers to Group 1 superstars Anamoe (Street Boss {USA}) and Pierro.

“It’s a big draft and there’s everything from maiden gallopers right through to the well-performed Criaderas, who bounced back to form at the weekend just gone,’’ Godolphin’s Racing and Bloodstock Manager Jason Walsh said. “He’s a proper horse, Criaderas, he’s only lightly raced and he’s got a long and successful future ahead of him for his new owners in the right environment.”

Regally bred Justify shines in trial

There were five heats for the juveniles at Warwick Farm trials on Friday morning and the 2-year-old daughter of dual-Group 1 winner Global Glamour (Star Witness), by first-season sire Justify (USA), made the best possible impression on her first public appearance.

Just Glamorous, trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, recorded a 1l victory in Heat 11 (798 metres), pushed out by Tim Clark to win the trial with Istoria Girl (Written By) finishing second and Bertinelli (Snitzel) close behind in third. Just Glamorous was a $900,000 purchase by her trainers in conjunction with Kestrel Thoroughbreds at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

The Waterhouse/Bott team also produced The Little Pumper (Shalaa {Ire}) in Heat 8, who spurted to the front late under Tim Clark. He was purchased by the same connections but at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. Costing $120,000, he is out of Sensibility (Redoute’s Choice), a winner who was second in the G1 Flight S.

Baker’s juveniles impress at trials

Local trainer Bjorn Baker also fielded two juvenile trial winners, with the Deep Field colt Luna Field just prevailing in Heat 9, followed by the All Too Hard filly Stefi Magnetica who was pushed out by Rachel King to take Heat 12.

Luna Field was bought for $375,000 by his trainer, All Winners Thoroughbreds and Clarke Bloodstock (FBAA) at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. He is out of three-time winner Delaluna (Strategic), a sister to Group 1 winner Mistegic.

Bought at the same sale, Stefi Magnetica is out of G1 Stradbroke H. winner Mid Summer Music (Oamaru Force), and was knocked down to Cunningham Thoroughbreds, Clarke Bloodstock (FBAA) and her trainer for $140,000.

Trapeze Artist filly saunters to Facile trial win

The most visually impressive of the juvenile trial winners on Friday morning was the aptly named Trapeze Artist filly Facile.

Jumping smartly and taking the lead, with little encouragement she quickly left the field trailing upon entering the home straight, sauntering away with Heat 10 under Brenton Avdulla, finishing 4.41l ahead of Fickle (I Am Invincible).

Trained by Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou, Facile was picked up by her trainers at the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $420,000. She is out of the Listed-winning Pierro mare I Like It Easy, and is from the extended family of Group 1 Oakleigh Plate winner Eagle Falls (Hussonet {USA}).

Moody fined

Peter Moody has been fined over his comments about Blaike McDougall following the jockey’s ride of Amalgamation (Dundeel {NZ}) at Cranbourne on November 12.

On Friday Moody was fined $1000 as he was charged by Racing Victoria stewards under AR 228, concerning conduct affecting the image of racing, whilst a second $1000 fine is to be suspended for two years.

The leaked audio report which resulted in the charge was sent to the owners of Amalgamation, and Moody issued both public and private apologies following the incident. Amalgamation is now trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.

Mills snaps up Declaration Of War filly at Keeneland

Having been active at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale last week, Sheamus Mills of Sheamus Mills Bloodstock (FBAA) continued his spend in America and on Thursday he added Miss You Ella (USA) (Declaration Of War {USA}) to his portfolio, snapping up the two-time winner for US$140,000 (AU$208,800).

The 3-year-old filly has also been placed at Grade 3 level and she is out of the three-time-winning Unbridled’s Song (USA) mare Newstouse (USA) making her a half-sister to stakes winner Newstome (USA) (Goldencents {USA}).

Unraced Into Mischief colt makes US$1 million

An unraced 2-year-old colt by record-setting sire Into Mischief (USA) brought US$1 million (AU$1,491,700) from Mick Wallace, agent, on behalf of Gandharvi Racing, to dissolve a partnership very late in the day to top Keeneland's single-session November Horses of Racing Age Sale on Thursday (local).

Produced by Gaudete (USA) (Distorted Humor {USA}) – an unraced half-sister to leading young sire Munnings (USA) – Hip 5352 was consigned by Highgate Sales, Agent XXXV.

The topper previously brought US$350,000 (AU$522,100) from China Horse Club/Gandharvi Racing at last year's Keeneland September Sale. His yearling half-brother by Violence (USA) brought US$300,000 (AU$447,500) from Repole Stable and St. Elias Stables at Keeneland September.

Goffs Foal Sale concludes

Havana Grey (GB) supplied the sale-topping filly on the final day of what Henry Beeby described as a “sensational” November Foal Sale at Goffs.

That €68,000 (AU$105,200) filly (Lot 962) was signed for by renowned judge Paul McCartan of Ballyphillip Stud, best known for breeding speedballs Harry Angel (Ire) and Tiggy Wiggy (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), and was consigned by Olive O'Connor Bloodstock.

McCartan said, “She was a beautiful filly out of a Showcasing mare and there are plenty of 2-year-old winners in the pedigree. I've been very impressed by Havana Grey. I really liked his foals from his first crop as well.”

On Thursday, 176 of the 235 foals were sold which equates to a 75 per cent clearance rate in a week where the overall turnover rose 16 per cent to €29,561,000 (AU$45,740,400).

The strong figures didn't stop there. The average rose 15 per cent to €40,110 (AU$62,100) while the median climbed nine per cent to €24,000 (AU$37,100). All told, 737 of the 917 lots offered were sold, translating to a 80 per cent clearance rate.

Havana Grey breeding right tops Tattersalls Online

A breeding right in leading first-season sire Havana Grey (GB) (Lot 57) brought 115,000gns (AU$204,200) from Badgers Bloodstock to top the Tattersalls Online November Sale on Thursday.

Offered on behalf of a partnership, the Whitsbury Manor Stud stallion's breeding right proved popular. The grey has already sired 13 Group/Listed performers, and his top-priced yearling went for 325,000gns (AU$605,600) this season. His stud fee has risen to £18,500 (AU$32,800) for 2023.

Listed winner Willesee (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}) (Lot 34) was the second-dearest lot of the day at 90,000gns (AU$159,800). Sent through the ring by Jessica Harrington's Commonstown Stables, the 3-year-old filly went to Mountarmstrong Stud. Her second dam is G3 Prix d'Aumale heroine Helleborine (GB) (Observatory {USA}), the dam of G2 Coventry S. winner and sire Calyx (GB), a son of Kingman (GB).

Overall, 38 lots changed hands for a gross of 446,500gns (AU$792,700) and a clearance rate of 67 per cent. The average was 11,750gns (AU$20,900) and the median was 5500gns (AU$9800).

Looking Ahead - November 19

4 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

On Saturday, we kick off our selections in New Zealand where Ethereal Star (Snitzel) will seek to add Listed honours to her record. Meanwhile at Ballarat, Gitalong (Zoustar) will attempt to get off the mark at the third time of asking and then On The Amazon, another son of Zoustar, will attempt to make his presence felt on his first start at the Sunshine Coast.

Ethereal Star, 2-year-old filly (Snitzel x Eleonora {NZ} {Makfi {GB}})

Ethereal Star finished a good second on debut and will be looking to break the ice at her first try at stakes level. She will be ridden by Ryan Elliot from barrier six.

Purchased by her trainer, Andrew Forsman, Andrew Williams Bloodstock (FBAA) and Bevan Smith Bloodstock for NZ$600,000 at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale at Karaka earlier this year, the 2-year-old filly is out of dual Group 3 winner Eleonora (NZ) (Makfi {GB}).

Eleonora herself is sister to two-time Group 2 scorer Supera (NZ) (Savabeel), while further back this is the same family multiple Group 1-winning mare Ethereal (NZ) (Rhythm {USA}).

Gitalong, 2-year-old colt (Zoustar x Khulaasa {Epaulette})

Having finished unplaced on his first two career starts, the Team Hawkes-trained Gitalong will attempt to make it third time lucky when he tackles the Magic Millions Ballarat 2YO Classic on Saturday.

The colt was purchased by Paul Willetts Bloodstock for $200,000 at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Weanling Sale, before being picked up by his trainers for $425,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Vinery Stud draft the following year.

A son of Widden Stud-based sire Zoustar, the 2-year-old is the first foal out of out of G3 Thoroughbred Breeders' S. winner Khulaasa, a daughter of Epaulette, who was purchased at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Broodmare Sale for $1.35 million when offered as part of the Shadwell Dispersal in 2021.

Khulaasa herself is a daughter of dual Listed winner Taameer (NZ) (General Nediym), who is also the dam of fellow stakes winner Bulbula (Shamardal {USA}) and she is in turn the dam of two-time Group 3 winner Aryaaf (Epaulette).

Another by Zoustar is set to make his debut at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday, in the form of the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained On The Amazon, who is set to line up over 1200 metres at the Queensland track.

A $500,000 buy for TFI at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this year, the colt is out of stakes-placed, well-related mare River The River, who is a sister to Group 2 winner First Command (Commands) while she also counts Hong Kong Group 2 winner Oneworld (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) among her half-siblings.

Further back this is the same family as Group 1 winner River Dove (Hurricane Sky), the dam of Group 2 winner and now Vinery Stud inmate Headwater, while the Group 1 winner and now Kia Ora Stud resident Captivant also features on the page.

Looking Back

Our first selection on Friday as Exogroove (Exceed And Excel), who finished fifth at Bathurst, while our second pick, Penman (Written Tycoon), was second at Moe and our final choice, White Russian (Fastnet Rock), came home in fourth at Moonee Valley.
