The meetings in Australia on Saturday are littered with juvenile racing and the Listed Calaway Gal is one of the headline events at Eagle Farm. In the next of our in-depth backgrounder series, we take a look at the fillies set to line up in the Listed race.

All 10 of the fillies to line up in the $150,000 race were offered at public auction, with Helen Page’s Trifling (Better Than Ready) the most expensive purchase, while Eureka Stud’s Spirit Of Boom is represented by two runners.

Sale information: Bought by Robyn Wise for $42,500 at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale in 2021, before being purchased by her trainer and Arthur Hoyeau for $240,000 at the Magic Million Gold Coast Yearling Sale the following year.

No matter what happens on Saturday, Freeman will always be able to lay claim to being the first winner for the Aquis Farm-based Lean Mean Machine, so it would be fitting if she handed the sire his first stakes winner in this Listed contest.

The filly is the only winner out of Nashville Skyline (Not A Single Doubt), who is herself a daughter of Listed-placed mare Jive (Can) (Dynaformer {USA}).

Further back the filly derives from the same family as G3 Vanity S. winner Musidora (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}), the dam of dual Group 3 winner Tulip (Pierro) and Sacred Eye (High Chaparral {Ire}).

Sale information: Bought by Annabel Neasham and Brian McGuire for $100,000 at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale in 2022.

This daughter of Choisir is having the second start of her career having run second in the G3 Ottawa S. last month and is a daughter of four-time winner Tsarina Wonder (Churchill Downs) making her a half-sister to Wonderful Riri (Barbados).

Empress Of Wonder’s third dam is G1 South Australian Oaks winner Irish Heiress (Millionaire {Ire}).

The filly is one of two runners for her trainer Annabel Neasham and she will line up alongside her stablemate Excel D’Or (Exceed And Excel).

Sale information: Passed in at the Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale after failing to make his $80,000 reserve.

The 2-year-old filly is the fourth foal out of stakes-placed mare Just Destiny (Conatus), making her a half-sister to winning-duo Let’s Conquer (Love Conquers All) and Justdini (Bernardini {USA}).

Keyboard tackles the race off the back of two second-place finishes at Eagle Farm and Doomben respectively and should she taste victory on Saturday she will become the first winner for her Eureka Stud-based sire Encryption.

Trained by Rex Lipp and Nicholas Hahn, the filly derives from the same family as Group 2 winner Close Your Eyes (Geiger Counter {USA}), the grandam of Group 3 winner La Fille En Jeu (NZ) (Mattre En Jeu {NZ}) and stakes winner Sea Galleon (Galileo {Ire})

No. 4 - Bertinelli

Sale information: Purchased by her trainer and Neil Jenkinson for $250,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Having finished third at her first start on the Gold Coast, Bertinelli will be hoping it’s second time lucky when she lines up at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

The daughter Arrowfield Stud resident is out of the Listed-winning mare The Huntress (Husson {Arg}) meaning she is a sister to winner Bullet Speed and three-time scorer Squanto.

Further down the page, this is the same family as Reigning Belle (Military Plume {NZ}), the grandam of G1 Kingston Town Classic winner Truly Great (Dundeel {NZ}) and Special Alert (Not A Single Doubt), who won the G3 Western Australian Oaks.

Bertinelli will be attempting to become the third daughter of Snitzel to win the race, following up the victories of Away Game in 2019 and Oakleigh Girl in 2013.

No. 5 - Malaboom

Sale information: An $80,000 buy for Kurrinda Bloodstock at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this year.

Malaboom, who finished sixth on debut, will be aiming to break the ice in the Listed race on Saturday and she will be attempting to become the second filly by the stallion with Eureka Stud-based Spirit Of Boom with 2017 winner Outback Barbie providing him his first.

The 2-year-old herself is a daughter of Listed Blue Diamond Preview (Fillies) winner Malasun (Red Ransom {USA}), whose four winners are headed by stakes-placed gelding Hard To Say (Exceed And Excel).

Malasun herself is a half-sister G2 Autumn Classic winner Stokehouse (Anabaa {USA}) and also hails from the same family Listed winner Regardsmaree (So You Think {NZ}).

Last seen running fourth Eagle Farm, Trifling is out of the Listed-placed Commands mare Wabeel, whose three foals to race and her runners are headed Listed winner Yamazaki (Tale Of The Cat {USA}).

The filly’s second dam is Yabeel (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) and she produced seven winners with the best of her produce being the multiple Listed winner Super Ninetyseven (Show A Heart), while this is the same family as 1993 G1 Cox Plate winner Solvit (Morcon {GB}).

Lyndhurst Farm’s resident stallion Better Than Ready has sired a winner of this race before in the shape of Better Reflection, who landed the contest on in 2018.

Last seen running third on debut at the Gold Coast, Mixed Spice’s third dam is G2 Surround S. winner On Type (Zeditave), the dam of G3 HDF McNeil S. winner Sugar Babe (Exceed And Excel), while further back this is the same family as Bellevue Hill.

Excel D’Or is the first foal out of the placed Pierro mare Miss Chierro and she is herself a daughter of Listed-winning Danehill (USA) mare Chickens, making her a half-sister to Group 3 scorer Do You Think (Starcraft {NZ}) and stakes-placed Amarela (NZ) (Pentire {GB}).

One of two runners for Eureka Stud-based sire Spirit Of Boom, Within Reason will be hoping to hand her trainer Desleigh Forster her second consecutive winner of the race with the Queensland trainer having saddled Exo Lady (Exosphere) to win the race 12 months ago.

Within Reason is out of five-time winning Not A Single Doubt mare Arrowette, who has produced two winners so far to date.

Arrowette is a half-sister Listed scorer and Group 1-placed filly Jersey Lily (Catbird), while further back this is the same family as Octavia (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), the dam of G3 Bletchingly S. winner King Of Sparta (I Am Invincible).

Further afield this is the same family as Group 1-winning German Champion Catella (Ger) (Generous {Ire}), the dam of Listed winner Caprice (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}).
