Looking Ahead - December 16

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Friday at Canterbury, we look at a debutant colt for Team Hawkes who throws to that great producer Proscratinate (Jade Hunter {USA}), plus a filly from the same family as Melody Belle (NZ) (Commands). At Moonee Valley, we look at a Godolphin filly whose half-brother is the Group-placed Demonstrate (New Approach {Ire}).

Canterbury, Race 2, 6.30pm AEDT, Arrowfield #feelthemagic Plate, $55,000, 1100m

Cardone, 3-year-old colt (Written Tycoon x Pride Rock {Fastnet Rock})

This colt is the first foal from the Fastnet Rock mare Pride Rock, who is a full sister to the G1 The Goodwood H. winner Lone Rock, also a dual Group 3 winner. The third dam on this page is Storm At Night (Night Shift {USA}), who was a half-sister to no less than Procrastinate, the foundation mare for the Oaks-winning family of Personal (Fastnet Rock).

Cardone was consigned by Glastonbury Farms to the 2021 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, where he went to Maher Racing and Heran Racing in Victoria for $220,000.

The colt is trained by the Hawkes team at Rosehill and he’s had three very good trials, in all of which he has placed. He was was third on November 24 at home, and comes into this race debut with barrier five and jockey Josh Parr.

Canterbury, Race 3, 7pm AEDT, The Agency Real Estate H, $55,000, 1250m

Lutine Belle, 3-year-old filly (Dundeel {NZ} x Magic Belle {NZ} {Keeper})

Lutine Belle is the second foal from the Keeper mare Magic Belle (NZ), who was a winner of the Listed Tauranga Classic in New Zealand. Further along this page is Paradise Belle (NZ) (Te Puninga {NZ}), also a Kiwi Listed winner, and this is the same family as the very smart race filly Melody Belle.

Lutine Belle was consigned by Arrowfield Stud to the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, where she sold to trainer Mark Newnham for $100,000.

She is trained by Newnham at Randwick and has been very good in trials this preparation, finishing second in both last month. In this debut she has drawn barrier one with jockey Tom Sherry.

Moonee Valley, Race 1, 6.15pm AEDT, Ladbrokes Same Race Multi H., $60,000, 1000m

Abstracted, 2-year-old filly (Territories {Ire} x Swishes {Danehill {USA}})

This Godolphin filly is a half-sister to the stakes-placed gelding Demonstrate, whose placings included three Group races. The first dam on this page, Swishes, is herself a half-sister to Le Zagaletta (Last Tycoon {Ire}), who was an outstanding horse winning five Group races and eight stakes races overall.

There is plenty of black type on this page, as you’d expect from a Godolphin family. It includes the likes of Group 3 winner Sweet Leader (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}), G2 Villiers S. winner Spot The Rock (Mighty Avalanche) and his Listed-winning full brother Candy Rock.

Territories (Ire) | Standing at Darley Europe

Abstracted is trained by Cummings at Warwick Farm and she’s had two good trials to date, placing second in each this preparation. In this debut she will have jockey Blake Shinn from barrier five.

Looking Back

Our Looking Ahead selections for Thursday went fairly well. At Kyneton, Miss Italiana (Fastnet Rock) was a scratching and The Genius (So You Think {NZ}) a winner. At Hawkesbury, Pharoah Magic (American Pharoah {USA}) was second.
