Tony Gollan looks to have a strong hand heading towards next weekend’s R. Listed Magic Millions Guineas as Latakia (Deep Field) and Spiritualised (Spirit Of Boom) both won their lead-up races at the Gold Coast, while the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Royal Entrance (Snitzel) booked his ticket to the R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic with his win in the Gold Nugget.

Race-Day Recap

Talented 3-year-olds Latakia (Deep Field) and Spiritualised (Spirit Of Boom) produced brilliant performances on the Gold Coast on Saturday and will now clash in next Saturday’s R. Listed Magic Millions 3YO Guineas.

Royal Entrance (Snitzel) will now join his stablemate Platinum Jubilee (Zoustar) in the R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic after he accrued enough money for the $2 million contest with his victory in the Gold Nugget.

The Les Ross-trained Mishani Royale (Kobayashi) poured water on the aspirations of some fillies looking to make the field for next weekend’s R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic when she proved far too strong for her rivals in the Gold Pearl at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Also at the Gold Coast, Junqueira (Capitalist) entered the reckoning for some major prizes in the near future when she produced an impressive performance to win the second race of her career.

Meanwhile in New Zealand, talented filly Rocababy (NZ) (El Roca) looks set for a return to stakes company after showing her rivals a clean pair of heels in the 3-year-old contest at Trentham.

Rich Hill Stud-based stallion Proisir saw his healthy lead at the top of the New Zealand Sires' Premiership extended further after his son Soldier Boy (NZ) prevailed in a blanket finish to the Listed Marton Cup at Trentham.

Gollan’s 3-year-olds shine on the Coast

Tony Gollan enjoyed a good day at the Gold Coast on Saturday as a pair of his 3-year-olds, Latakia (Deep Field) and Spiritualised (Spirit Of Boom), saluted the judge at the Queensland track and now both horses will be aimed at the R. Listed Magic Millions 3YO Guineas next weekend.

Raced by Black Soil Bloodstock’s Brian Siemsen, who also incidentally owns Gollan’s R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic contender Skirt The Law (Better Than Ready), Latakia put herself bang in the picture for next week’s feature when she defeated Bella Rouge (I Am Invincible) by 0.5l in the Magic Millions Rising Stars 3YO and 4YO Fillies and Mares.

The filly is out of the winning Flying Spur mare Xandretta making her a half-sister to G3 Maribyrnong Plate winner Vinicuna (I Am Invincible). Xandretta herself is a half-sister to G1 Champagne S. winner Carry On Cutie (More Than Ready {USA}) and My Amelia (Redoute’s Choice), the dam of Aquis Farm-based sire The Mission.

Latakia was purchased by Black Soil, her trainer and John Foote of Foote Bloodstock (FBAA) for $520,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Attunga Stud draft.

At Magic Millions that same year, Gollan and Foote also teamed up to purchase Spiritualised, paying Musk Creek Farm $575,000 for the colt, which still remains a record price for a yearling for the Eureka Stud-based stallion.

The son of Spirit Of Boom scooted clear to beat Mobstar (Shalaa {Ire}) by 1.8l and he will now join his stablemate in the R. Listed Magic Millions 3YO Guineas back at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

The 3-year-old colt is out of the four-time-winning Snitzel mare Personalised, who Musk Creek’s Scott Williamson and Boomer Bloodstock’s (FBAA) Craig Rounsefell bought for $525,000 at the 2019 edition of the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale when she was carrying the colt in utero.

Personalised herself is a half-sister to the G1 VRC Oaks winner Personal (Fastnet Rock) with the pair being out of Adelaide Listed winner Personify (Galileo {Ire}).

Personify herself is a out of Procrastinate (Jade Hunter {USA}), whose four other stakes winners include the South African multiple Group 1 winner Laisserfaire (Danehill {USA}), the Listed-winning sires Foreplay and Time Thief, and Group 3 winner A Time For Julia (Redoute’s Choice).

Musk Creek will offer a Zoustar half-sister to Spiritualised at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. The filly is catalogued as Lot 229.

Gollan was pleased with Latakia’s performance on Saturday and said he was looking forward to seeing what she can produce next weekend.

“Hopefully we’ll see her at the Guineas next week. She’s a gorgeous filly and she’s got a lot of upside to her,” Gollan told Sky Racing. “She’s a beautiful horse and she was a lovely yearling when we purchased her. She’s always taken a little bit of time, but it’s great to see her win a race like this.

“Hopefully we’ll see her (Latakia) at the (Magic Millions) Guineas next week. She’s a gorgeous filly and she’s got a lot of upside to her.” - Tony Gollan

“We’re dead-set just scratching the surface with her. She’s built like a big colt, isn’t she? Beautiful horse,” he said.

“Always loved this trip, or 1400 (metres) is right up her alley. There’s a lot to look forward to for the team.”

Royal Entrance books Magic Millions spot

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Royal Entrance (Snitzel) booked his spot in next weekend’s R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic with a victory in the Gold Nugget at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

The son of Snitzel showed he was a colt for the black book when he made a winning debut at Warwick Farm last month and he led from pillar to post, eventually beating Sonny Daze (Performer) by 1.8l. Worx (Capitalist) came home another 0.5l in third.

The Novelist (Written By) had been one of the stables high hopes heading into next Saturday’s 1200-metre contest, however it was revealed he had suffered a small setback so will no longer take his place in the race, but Royal Entrance will likely be joined by his stablemates Platinum Jubilee (Zoustar) and Summer Loving (Exceed And Excel) in the $2 million feature.

“It’s an important win for some important connections and we brought him up here thinking he could be the kind of colt that could do the back-up next week, so that’s the intention,” said Bott.

“He’s a lovely individual and just great to see the improvement today from his first-up run, he was a little bit raw on that occasion. The main work is done, we bought a fit horse here today (Saturday) hopefully he comes through it well and in the right order and we’ll press forward.

“He’s beautifully proportioned and a lovely balanced horse, you know, a nice athletic type, which is what we saw today (Saturday).”

China Horse Club, Newgate and their partners look to have a strong hand in the R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic and they will be represented by R. Listed Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic winner Sovereign Fund (Capitalist) and G3 Breeders’ Plate winner Empire Of Japan, who like Royal Entrance is by Arrowfield Stud’s leading sire Snitzel.

Purchased by China Horse Club, Newgate Bloodstock, Trilogy Racing and Mitchell Bloodstock (FBAA) for $425,000 from the Arrowfield Stud draft at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Royal Entrance is the fifth winner out of the unraced Stravinsky (USA) mare Ballet Blue and her progeny is headed by the colt’s winning and Group 3-placed three-quarter sister Tchaikovsky (Redoute’s Choice), while Royal Entrance is a brother to Listed-placed winner Smirnova.

Ballet Blue herself is a half-sister to Group 2 winner The Heavyweight (Zeditave) and the Listed-winning duo Happy Strike (Gold Fever {USA}) and Born Western (Western Symphony {NZ}). Further back this is the same family as Listed winners Malibu Style (Magnus), Excelorada (Exceed And Excel), Zedrich (Zeditave) and So Anyway (General Nediym).

Being out of a Stravinsky mare, Royal Entrance is bred on the same cross as now Newgate Farm resident Russian Revolution.

The colt is one of four juvenile winners in Australia for Snitzel this season and he has also been represented by a pair of juvenile winners in New Zealand this season, headed by Listed Counties Challenge S. winner Ethereal Star.

Snitzel will be represented by 46 yearlings at Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling which kicks off on Tuesday.

Mishani Royale shines in Pearl

The Les Ross-trained Mishani Royale (Kobayashi) poured water on the aspirations of some fillies looking to make the field for next weekend’s R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic when she proved far too strong for her rivals in the Gold Pearl at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

The daughter of Aquis Farm-based Kobayashi was not offered at the Magic Millions sale and is therefore not eligible for next weekend’s race, but she showed she was a filly worth keeping an eye on when finishing strongly to beat Trifling (Better Than Ready) by 1.8l.

A homebred for the Mike Crooks-owned Mishani Enterprises, Mishani Royale finished second on debut over 1000 metres at the Sunshine Coast in November before breaking the ice over course and distance on December 16.

Following her victory, Ross said the filly would now be aimed at some lucrative QTIS prizes in the future.

“We were quietly confident, and Benny said to me that they ran a quick time in the last race, but I said that I think she goes a little bit better than Mishani Maverick (sixth in the Gold Nugget),” explained Ross.

“She's a nice filly, and hopefully, we can find a QTIS race somewhere.”

“She's (Mishani Royale) a nice filly, and hopefully, we can find a QTIS race somewhere.” - Les Ross

The filly is out of five-time winner Girl In A Million (Your Song) and she is herself a daughter of Listed winner Calming (Zeditave), making her a half-sister to G3 Dark Jewel runner-up Calming Influence (Commands).

Kobayashi stood at Aquis Farm for a fee of $8800 (inc GST) and his progeny is headed by the stakes placed filly Midnight In Tokyo.

Stakes races on the horizon for Junqueira

Junqueira (Capitalist) entered the reckoning for some major prizes in the near future when she produced an impressive performance to win the second race of her career at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Having broken her maiden on the first time of asking, the filly finished third at her second start and she got back into the winning groove when she defeated Busting (Spirit Of Boom) by 2.5l, while Cripps Tonite (Spirit Of Boom) was 3.5l away in third.

The filly’s trainer John O’Shea said she would now head back to Sydney and be aimed at the G2 Light Fingers S. at Randwick on February 11.

“She’ll be going back to Sydney,” said O’Shea. “Coming up here was about her being able to execute and learn her craft as she has so much ability. We’ll take her home and she could possibly end up in a race like the Light Fingers.

“Coming up here (QLD) was about her (Junqueira) being able to execute and learn her craft as she has so much ability. We’ll take her home and she could possibly end up in a race like the (G2) Light Fingers.” - John O'Shea

Purchased by Mystery Downs and John Foote Bloodstock (FBAA) for $80,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2021, Junqueira is out of the Listed winner Bibby (USA) (Stormy Atlantic {USA}).

Further back this is the same family as dual stakes winner Love Cove (USA) (Not For Love {USA}).

Newgate Farm-based Capitalist has 42 yearlings catalogued at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Rocababy re-enters stakes picture

Talented filly Rocababy (NZ) (El Roca) looks set for a return to stakes company after showing her rivals a clean pair of heels in the 3-year-old contest at Trentham on Saturday.

Rocababy (NZ) made an impressive winning return at Trentham | Image courtesy of Race Images PN

A winner of the Listed O’Leary’s Fillies’ S. at Wanganui on just her third career outing, Rocababy was not at all hindered by the Soft 7 track and readily drew 2.5l clear of Diamond Thief (NZ) (Belardo {Ire}), with Group 3 winner and G1 NZ 1000 Guineas runner-up Best Seller (NZ) (Wrote {Ire}) a further 1l adrift in third.

The latter’s presence in the field gave the form a bit of substance, and trainer Anna Clement has held the daughter of Westbury Stud-based stallion El Roca in high regard for quite some time.

“That was very nice and not unexpected, we have always thought she was going to be a pretty handy little horse,” Clement said. “I’ll have a good look around and see if I can find another nice 3-year-old race somewhere for her.

“...we have always thought she (Rocababy) was going to be a pretty handy little horse. I’ll have a good look around and see if I can find another nice 3-year-old race somewhere for her.” - Anna Clement

“We will just have to wait and see how she does over the week. She is actually not a very good doer - she is just like her mother was, who also was not a great doer apparently.

“I think that she probably can go on the better tracks, although they would probably go a bit too quickly for her over shorter distances, so we would have to look at 1400 metres or a mile.”

Raced by her Taranaki breeder Graham Meredith, Rocababy is the first winner out of the Mastercraftsman (Ire) mare Christine Ann (NZ), who is a granddaughter of the multiple stakes placegetter Bold And Beautiful (GB) (Bold Lad {USA}). Bold And Beautiful herself produced six winners, spearheaded by the stakes scorer Warbler (GB) (Warning {GB}).

Christine Ann has a 2-year-old colt by Japanese stallion Staphanos (Jpn) on the ground and was most recently served by his Novara Park Stud barnmate King Of Comedy (Ire) a son of leading British stallion Kingman (GB).

Rocababy’s sire El Roca, meanwhile, will be represented by 15 yearlings during Books 1 and 2 of the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale later this month.

Proisir again as Soldier Boy grabs Listed win

Rich Hill Stud-based stallion Proisir saw his healthy lead at the top of the New Zealand Sires Premiership extended further after his son Soldier Boy (NZ) prevailed in a blanket finish to the Listed Marton Cup at Trentham on Saturday.

Having broken his maiden in the Listed Wanganui Guineas back in September 2021, the 4-year-old had to wait over a year to double his stakes-race tally but did so in tenacious fashion courtesy of a 0.1l victory over Sagunto (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}).

The Gavin Sharrock-trained gelding was bouncing back from a disappointing run in the G1 Zabeel Classic at his previous start, but his trainer was confident that there were valid excuses for that below-par effort and was delighted with how Soldier Boy had prepped up for the Listed feature.

“His work on Tuesday had been astounding and he had been licking the feed bowl clean and tearing around the paddock, he was just so well,” Sharrock said.

“His (Soldier Boy's) work on Tuesday had been astounding and he had been licking the feed bowl clean and tearing around the paddock, he was just so well.” - Gavin Sharrock

“He ran fourth in the New Zealand Derby and probably should have won it. He was pushed four wide into the first corner and had to go to the lead and still hung on to run fourth, so I think he will run 3200 metres.

“I’m not sure where we’ll go next. I’ll get him home first and then have a look.”

Soldier Boy, who is raced by his co-breeder Gavin O’Dea, is the second foal to race out of the American-bred mare Forty Love (NZ) (Ekraar {USA}). His sister, Vancooga (NZ) finished runner-up to Jennifer Eccles (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}) in the 2020 G1 New Zealand Oaks, while further back this is the family of Group 2 winner and G1 Manikato S. runner-up Honour The Name (Royal Academy {USA})

Proisir | Standing at Rich Hill Stud

Soldier Boy’s victory handed Proisir, who will be represented by 49 yearlings across Books 1 and 2 in the NZB National Yearling Sale at Karaka later this month, with his sixth individual stakes winner of the season, which leaves him three clear of his nearest pursuer.

Snitzel colt makes Royal Entrance into Magic Millions picture

5 min read
Exciting colt Royal Entrance (Snitzel) made every yard of the Aquis Stallions Golden Nugget a winning one to give his owners, trainers and sire a strong hand in next weekend’s $2 million R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast.

Royal Entrance took his record to a perfect two from two with an impressive display under James McDonald, a victory which provided the red-hot Newgate Farm-China Horse Club colts partnership with a third live contender in Saturday’s juvenile feature.

Newgate, China Horse Club and Trilogy Racing signed the docket for the well-bred son of Snitzel alongside Mitchell Bloodstock (FBAA) at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, parting with $425,000 to secure him from the draft of his breeders Arrowfield Stud.

Arrowfield’s Bloodstock Manager Jon Freyer was suitably impressed with Royal Entrance’s authoritative victory over Sonny Daze (Performer), suggesting that both he and fellow Snitzel colt Empire Of Japan, who is raced by a similar group of owners, will take all the beating in Saturday’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

“It sounds like he’s on the improve, so whether he is quite good enough to win next week I don’t know, but he is bound to run well,” Freyer said of Royal Entrance. “That’s just in his nature.

“I think the (G3) Breeders’ Plate winner Empire Of Japan will be hard to beat, but this bloke has got a lot of fight in him and a real will to win.

“I think the Breeders’ Plate winner Empire Of Japan will be hard to beat, but this bloke (Royal Entrance) has got a lot of fight in him and a real will to win.” - Jon Freyer

“Snitzel has quinellaed the Magic Millions 2YO Classic previously, so maybe he’s in line to do it again.”

Timely victory

Royal Entrance’s 1.8l success also provided a timely boost for his breeders ahead of this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, which gets underway on Tuesday.

“It’s good for the sire and good for the farm to have consigned another nice horse,” Freyer added. “He was a lovely horse, the most magnificent yearling, and we all liked him.

“It’s good for the sire (Snitzel) and good for the farm to have consigned another nice horse. He (Royal Entrance) was a lovely horse, the most magnificent yearling, and we all liked him.” - Jon Freyer

“He wasn’t perfect in front, which was probably one of the reasons that held him back from making really significant money, even though he made $425,000.

“Henry (Field) liked him enough to take the risk with him and it’s certainly paid off thus far. It might pay off big time in the fullness of time!”

Bred on the same cross as Russian Revolution, who was raced by a similar partnership, Royal Entrance is out of the unraced Stravinsky (USA) mare Ballet Blue, who has produced five winners from five runners to date.

That quintet is headed by the Group 2-placegetter Tchaikovsky (Redoute’s Choice), a three-quarter brother to Royal Entrance who fetched $1.3 million to the bid of James Harron at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale back in 2017.

Royal Entrance is also a brother to Smirnova, who finished third behind Group 1 winner Mazu in the Listed Darby Munro S. and visited his sire Maurice (Jpn) for her maiden cover in 2022.

“He’s got a good pedigree and the mare has had some nice winners,” Freyer said. “Smirnova was a filly that we raced - she was a little bit unlucky in some black-type races but was stakes placed.

Jon Freyer | Image courtesy of Inglis

“Tchaikovsky was another horse out of the mare who was a (Golden) Slipper prospect, so it’s a really high-class family.

“It won’t be surprising if a horse like this goes on with it and reaches the heights.”

Purple patch

Royal Entrance is just the latest colt to join the production line of talented juveniles by Snitzel, who is enjoying another great year with his progeny.

Snitzel himself went into the Magic Millions 2YO Classic as a red-hot favourite off the back of an emphatic 6l romp at Doomben, but he could only dead-heat for third after a mishap in the barriers.

Snitzel | Standing at Arrowfield Stud

The four-time Champion Sire has more than made up for it in the breeding barn since, and Freyer is anticipating buyers will once again be clamouring for his progeny on the Gold Coast next week.

“We have some Snitzels in our draft that we like a lot,” he said. “There is a colt out of Super Cash that we’re very high on, and there’s another colt out of Fleet Week, a Tapit mare from overseas.

“I think there are two particularly good colts that will garner a lot of interest here at the sale. They’re both early foals of the mare and really look the part, so they could be two of the highlights in our draft.

“It’s interesting with Snitzel, he’s got that many good horses bred on various lines. I think of his Group winners, they are out of 50-odd different broodmare sirelines. He nearly nicks with anything Snitzel.”

Pedigree Boosters – Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale

3 min read
Ahead of the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, we have found five yearlings who have had substantial pedigree updates over the past couple of months.

The catalogue for the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale was released on November 9, 2022, and since then, a host of yearlings being offered at Bundall next week have had their pedigree enhanced, which is important information for vendors and buyers alike.

Lot 585 - Written Tycoon x Ajeeta (I Am Invincible), colt - on account of Kingstar Farm

By Yulong Stud's Champion Sire Written Tycoon, this colt is out of the winning I Am Invincible mare Ajeeta, who is a half-sister to Listed winner Axe, also by Written Tycoon. His pedigree also stretches back to include Flying Spur and Encosta De Lago.

Preceeding this colt, Ajeeta has a Not A Single Doubt 2-year-old who has yet to race, whose older brother is the 3-year-old Pierro gelding named More Mischief.

Trained by Amanda Turner, More Mischief was placed at provincial level when the catalogue was compiled and picked an opportune moment to break his maiden when making all over 1400 metres at Warwick Farm's Metropolitan meeting on Wednesday 4 last week.

Defying odds of $26, he held on gamely to score by 0.36l over the Chris Waller-trained Step Aside (NZ) (Redwood {GB}).

Lot 585 - Written Tycoon x Ajeeta (colt) | Image courtesy of Magic Millions

Lot 813 - Zoustar x Dynastic Lady (Fastnet Rock), filly - on account of Segenhoe Stud

This filly is out of the Fastnet Rock mare Dynastic Lady, a sister to G1 Levin Classic winner Age Of Fire and Listed-placed Sacred Valley, with the extended family including the British Joint Champion 3-Year-Old Female Miler in 2012, Fallen For You (GB) (Dansili {GB}).

Bred by Go Bloodstock, this filly is the third foal from Dynastic Lady, herself a juvenile winner, and her first foal is the 4-year-old Riverplate (Flying Artie). Trained by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, Riverplate broke his maiden by an impressive 3.75l at Sandown Lakeside over 1400 metres on November 16.

He duly followed up at Sandown Hillside on December 7, justifying odds-on favouritism when holding on gamely in a Class 1, again over 1400 metres.

Lot 1066 – Exceedance x Croatian (High Chaparral {Ire}), filly - on account of Baramul Stud

By Vinery’s exciting freshman sire, this filly is a half-sister to the unbeaten 2-year-old Croatian Belle (Brazen Beau), who will line up in next week’s R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200 metres) on the Gold Coast.

The Linday Park-trained Croatian Belle won over 1000 metres at The Valley on December 16, before repeating the dose on New Year’s Eve.

The filly’s dam was a four-time placegetter and is a sister to the Group 3 runner-up A Man To Match (High Chapparal {Ire}), while the third dam, Dansino (Danehill {USA}), won the Listed Talindert S. as a 2-year and has thrown the Listed victress Zagreb (Zabeel {NZ}). Dansino is a three-quarter sister to the Group 2 winner Moon Dragon (Danehill {USA}) and a half-sister to the Listed winner Leica Smile (At Talaq {USA}) – the dam of the Listed victor Éclair Mystic (Stratum).

Tattersalls offers 17 Horses for resale to recoup £11.6 million October debt

Tattersalls is offering for resale 17 juveniles bought at last year's October Yearling Sale for 11,055,000gns (AU$20,392,800). Payment has yet to be received for the group headed by a colt by Frankel (GB) out of Bold Lass (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who was sold for 2,000,000gns (AU$3,689,300) by Watership Down Stud.

The yearlings were bought by bloodstock agent Richard Knight for an undisclosed client, who was believed to be returning to the sport having previously enjoyed Classic success as an owner in Britain and Ireland.

An email sent out by Tattersalls on Friday read, “We are emailing you as a purchaser at Book 1 of last year's Tattersalls October Yearling Sale to advise that owing to non-payment of sums owed, we will be offering 17 2-year-olds for resale either by private sale by immediate effect or at sale/sales to be confirmed.”

The email also advises potential buyers that the horses, 16 of which were bought at Book 1 and one from Book 2, have been broken in and are in pre-training with Classic-winning jockey Adam Kirby and his partner Megan Evans at their Vicarage Farm just outside Newmarket.

As well as the purchases at Tattersalls, Knight also bought three yearlings from the Goffs Orby Sale for a total of €2,980,000 (AU$4,609,500), including the €2,600,000 (AU$4,021,700) top lot, a sister to the dual Group 1 winner Blackbeard (Ire) (No Nay Never {USA}). The agent also signed for five yearlings at the Arqana August Sale for €1,980,000 (AU$3,062,700), and six at Keeneland's September Yearling Sale for US$4,875,000 (AU$7,084,800).

Tattersalls has been approached for comment along with the other sales companies.

Henry Beeby, Goffs Group chief executive, said, “Goffs' policy is that we never comment on such matters, either to confirm or deny. The Goffs Conditions of Sale clearly state that vendors are paid their sales proceeds after 35 days following each sale and that was, of course, the case following the 2022 Orby Sale.”

A statement from Keeneland similarly indicated that the company does not comment on the private business of clients but that all vendors have been paid, as per normal.

Rapid Reflections with JD Hayes

4 min read

In today's instalment of 2022/2023 Rapid Reflections, we feature a quickfire round with JD Hayes of Lindsay Park Racing.

TDN AusNZ: Favourite racing moment of 2022?

JD Hayes: Mr Brightside winning the G1 Doncaster H.

TDN AusNZ: And favourite non-racing moment?

JDH: Nephew stopped teething.

Mr Brightside (NZ) winning the G1 Doncaster H. at Randwick | Image courtesy of Ashlea Brennan

TDN AusNZ: What are you most looking forward to in 2023?

JDH: We have had some very impressive 2-year-old performances from the stable so far this season and we are really looking forward to seeing how they go in the big 2-year-old events of the autumn carnival like the Blue Diamond and its lead-up races. Australian racing is centred heavily on 2-year-olds and we have managed to have four pre-Christmas 2-year-old winners already, which shows our system is working nicely and it would be so exciting to be competitive in these iconic Victorian races.

TDN AusNZ: Whose progeny have impressed you so far on your Magic Millions inspections?

JDH: I really liked the I Am Invincibles with their powerful, athletic appearance and the Snitzels with their deep girths and neat, racy conformation. We found some nice Fastnet Rock fillies as well which we do have an affinity for having trained the likes of Catchy.

From the unproven first-crop stallions I would have to say I think the Zousain yearlings were quite impressive with their substance and athleticism.

JD and Ben Hayes | Image courtesy of Darren Tindale

TDN AusNZ: If you could be someone else in the industry for a day who would it be, and why?

JDH: Ben Hayes because he gets to work with me.

TDN AusNZ: Who is your favourite racehorse of 2022?

JDH: Extreme Step – she is a filly that has won three races this prep for Victor Lit Lung Lee who is a good supporter of the stable.

TDN AusNZ: Who is the most underrated stallion in Australasia?

JDH: It’s hard to go past our very own boy Nicconi. He has been at stud since 2010 and has managed to maintain an incredible winners to runners rate of over 70 per cent which when compared to all the other stallions out there is very high, yet he stands for a modest stud fee ($22,000 inc GST) compared to others and he can get you a superstar racehorse like Nature Strip!

Nicconi | Standing at Widden Victoria

TDN AusNZ: Who do you think will take out 2023 first-season sire honours?

JDH: This title is still very open, we obviously like our colt Arkansaw Kid by Harry Angel and he has got his sire at the top of the rankings but there seems to be some nice runners for Trapeze Artist and Written By coming through as well and I wouldn’t write off Brave Smash either. I think it will be a close battle for this title and there might even be some late-season 2-year-olds for The Autumn Sun that bring him into the mix.

TDN AusNZ: What was your best purchase in 2022?

JDH: We probably have two candidates for this title at the moment as we have been able to produce two stakes-winning 2-year-old colts so far this season. Arkansaw Kid (Harry Angel) was a $190,000 purchase from the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale and we put together an all womens' group of owners to qualify for the Inglis Pink Bonus. We took him to Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day for the R. Listed Inglis Banner 2-year-old race which was part of the pink series and he was the only horse in the race qualified to earn the $200,000 bonus no matter where he finished. He went on to win the race and claim the $300,000 winner's cheque plus the extra $200,000 bonus.

Our other 2-year-old that has won a stakes race already this season is Little Brose (Per Incanto) who was a $200,000 purchase from the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and has had two runs for a second in the G3 Maribyrnong Plate and then he won the Listed Merson Cooper.

TDN AusNZ: Favourite binge-worthy television show?

JDH: Peaky Blinders.

TDN AusNZ: What's the best book you read in 2022?

JDH: More of an audio book fan.

TDN AusNZ: What do you consider the greatest sporting moment of 2022? (Not solely racing related).

JDH: Argentina in the World Cup.

TDN AusNZ: What has been your favourite post-COVID trip?

JDH: Going to Ireland to pick up Camorra – Ger Lyons and the team were very welcoming, and it was only made possible by Jarred Magnabosco from Best Bloodstock for giving us the opportunity to train him.

TDN AusNZ: What's your 2023 New Year's resolution?

JDH: Lose 5kg. Now the twin brother, Will, is onboard I don’t want to be known as the fat twin.

Rosehill: Listed January Cup, $160,000, 2000m

What an apt and timely win it was recorded by Mission Phoenix (Reset) - a grandson of Zabeel (NZ) and a horse who boasts three strains of Sir Tristram (Ire)... so much Sir Patrick Hogan influence.

Bred by Burnewang North Pastoral's Cathy Hains, Mission Phoenix made his way through the sales ring on two occasions - sold by his breeder for $62,500 to Randwick Bloodstock (FBAA) at the 2017 Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale and to P L Bloodstock for $65,000 from the Millford Thoroughbreds Draft at the 2018 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

He is the 36th stakes race for his Darley-based, unbeaten sire who died in 2021. His dam is the Morphettville winner Oh Susannah (Fastnet Rock) who was also bred (and raced) by Hains whilst her Listed Frank Underwood S.-winning dam Lake Susannah (Filante {NZ}) was bred by Kingston Park Stud - run so successfully by Cathy's father David.

Not served in 2021 having produced an Inference colt, Oh Susannah is also dam of the three-time winner Our Sustar (Zoustar) who was served last spring by Playing God.

Other members of this family include the Group 1 winners Mystiko (USA) and Pasta Post (NZ) (Postponed {USA}) as well as a number of South African stars.

Trentham: Listed Marton Cup, NZ$60,000, 2200m

The good run being enjoyed by Rich Hill Stud's Proisir continued with this determined victory by his son Soldier Boy (NZ).

Appreciating a rise in distance (from 2050 metres to 2200 metres) and a drop in class (from his G1 Zabeel Classic eighth), Soldier Boy recorded the fourth win of his 22-start career - and his first at stakes level.

Raced by G R O'Dea who bred him with the Goodin family, Soldier Boy is one of the 11 stakes winners for his sire and the second stakes performer for his dam Forty Love (NZ) (Ekraar {USA}) who has also produced the G1 New Zealand Oaks runner-up Vancooga (NZ) - also by Proisir.

Again visiting Proisir in 2020 (a colt) and 2021 (no Stud Book return online as yet), Forty Love is out of the unraced Efrosini (Royal Academy {USA}) whose Listed Widden S.-winning dam Lilting (Twig Moss {Fr}) produced the dual Group winner Honour The Name (Royal Academy {USA}).

The G1 Golden Slipper S. winner Century Miss hails from this family and Soldier Boy is line-bred to her sire Century 5 X 4 - also boasting a cross (6 X 6) of another legendary Australian stallion in Vain.

So Si Bon springs Sandown surprise

Loveable 9-year-old So Si Bon (So You Think {NZ}) rolled back the years to spring a minor surprise in the BM 100 H. at Sandown Hillside on Saturday.

The veteran campaigner, who has earned over $2 million in prizemoney during his 86-start career, had not saluted the judge since he landed his second Vobis Gold Mile at Caulfield back in April 2021.

A dual Group 3 winner, So Si Bon had to dig deep to repel the challenge of the long odds-on favourite Detonator Jack (NZ) (Jakkalberry {Ire}) by 0.8l, with a further 2l back to Helene Leadingstar (Wanted) in third.

So Si Bon was one of five winners on the day for Coolmore Stud stalwart So You Think (NZ), who has 25 yearlings set to go through the ring at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale next week.

Russian Revolution on the board again

Russian Revolution continues to carve out a reputation as one of Australia’s most exciting young sires and looks to have another promising 3-year-old on his hands in the shape of Silentsar, who got off the mark in the lucrative Magic Millions Maiden Plate at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Trained by the Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou partnership, Silentsar held off the late surge of race favourite Bel Air (Written Tycoon) to score by 0.2l, with Sha Of Gomer (Shalaa {Ire}) another 0.5l away in third.

Russian Revolution sired his third stakes winner and first in Tasmania on Friday, when Russian Roni landed the Listed Tasmanian Guineas at Hobart.

Silentsar was purchased by his trainers for $300,000 at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale having been pinhooked by Cangon and Sledmere Stud as a weanling.

Deficit lands $200,000 bonus in The Wave

Later on in the afternoon, Silentsar’s stablemate Deficit (Snitzel) delivered connections a $200,000 bonus after winning The Wave at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Settled midfield from an inside barrier, while there were some nervous moments in the straight, it became a case of plan well executed when the 4-year-old found clear room and surged to the front for victory over a brave Ashgrove (Dundeel {NZ}).

“I saw him thinking about going up the inside and I was praying he wasn't going to try it, but he pulled the right reign late,” Sterling Alexiou said. “Brenton (Avdulla) just put him in the box seat and just bided his time in the straight and got him out at the right time and he held them off late.

“This sort of race, this horse wouldn't be afforded the chance to race for this sort of prizemoney very often. The owners have had a really good day today (Saturday).

“Obviously it's a restricted race, but we've targeted this race ever since he went out last preparation. It's a big rap for the stable and for all the owners and obviously for the horse because he's come good on the right day.”

Passeggiata retains unbeaten record

Lightly raced 3-year-old Passeggiata (Winning Rupert) looks destined for bigger things after making light work of her first metropolitan race at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

The Bjorn Baker-trained filly entered plenty of notebooks following her emphatic 3.5l victory on debut at Gosford last month, and duly handled the step up in class with aplomb as she led the field a merry dance to score by 1.5l.

Passeggiata again showed impressive gate speed on route to a comfortable success, one which prompted her trainer to draw comparisons with her Group 2-winning stablemate Shades Of Rose (Rubick), who contested The Everest back in October.

The cleverly named Passeggiata was purchased by Brae Sokolski’s Yes Bloodstock in conjunction with Matt Scown, Bjorn Baker Racing and his bloodstock agent Jim Clarke of Clarke Bloodstock (FBAA) for $110,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Frumos edges out stablemate

American-bred mare Frumos (USA) (Kitten’s Joy {USA}) led home a quinella for her trainer Chris Waller at Rosehill on Saturday after downing her stablemate Saigon (I Am Invincible) in a thrilling finish to the Benchmark 78 H.

The Nash Rawiller drive was seen to full effect as Frumos chartered a passage up the rail and nabbed her stablemate on the line to score by a nose, recording her fourth career success in the process.

Frumos was purchased from the Keeneland September Yearling Sale by Irish outfit Grove Stud for US$27,000 (AU$39,200), before then being sold for £220,000 (AU$386,600) at the Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze-Up Sale in 2020 prior to her export to Australia.

Mission Phoenix leads all the way in the January Cup

Mission Phoenix (Reset) has been a work in progress for Mark Newnham but rewarded his trainer’s patience at Rosehill on Saturday with a breakthrough stakes win in the Listed January Cup.

The lightly raced 6-year-old led from pillar to post to deny Aleas (GB) (Archipenko {USA}) by 0.2l, with Bonny Ezra (NZ) (Road To Rock) another 0.3l adrift in third.

Mission Phoenix looked to have a bright future when runner-up in the G3 Grand Prix S. at Eagle Farm on just his fourth career start, but the son of Reset had been off the track for well over two years prior to his return to action in March last year.

Kevin Hayes option Bistro

The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained Bistro (Street Boss {USA}) has been earmarked as a likely candidate for the G3 Kevin Hayes S. at Sandown-Hillside on February 11 following her win at the same track on Saturday.

The daughter of Street Boss (USA) defeated Capital Theatre (Capitalist) by 1.5l, while Fission (Russian Revolution) was another 1l away in third.

“She’s a filly that had cracks at stakes class right the way through, but just looking at her in the yard, she just looks like she’s grown that little bit that she needed to,” said the Freedman’s assistant trainer, Brad Taylor.

“To make it to stakes grade we’ll have to stretch her out to 1100 metres and so we might have a run before the Kevin Hayes and have a fit horse that is taking on those horses that might be resuming.

Princess Lunar unharmed after Gold Coast mishap

Saturday’s feature race meeting at the Gold Coast was brought to a standstill with Princess Lunar (Bel Esprit) escaping the racecourse before being captured in an adjoining canal.

The 4-year-old mare dislodged rider Tegan Harrison on the way to the start ahead of the fourth race, the Pierata First Yearlings Quality.

Princess Lunar’s escapade delayed the Gold Coast meeting with races pushed back one race, including The Wave, with the final event held 31 minutes later than originally scheduled.

Looking Ahead - January 8

4 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

We kick off our selections on Sunday in New Zealand as Styx (NZ) (Time Test {GB}) attempts to get off the mark at the first time of asking at Pukekohe. Meanwhile in Australia, Zoufire (Zoustar) and Vivideel (NZ) (Dundeel {NZ}) attempt to break the ice at Warrnambool.

Styx (NZ), 3-year-old filly (Time Test {GB} x Eloa {NZ} {Volksraad {GB}})

This daughter of Little Avondale shuttler Time Test (GB) will make her debut on Sunday and she will be ridden by Wiremu Pinn from barrier 14.

Styx is out of the G3 Highview S. winner Eloa (NZ), who has produced seven winners to date, including five-time winner Reach For Heaven (NZ) (Savabeel) and four-time scorer Kallisan (NZ) (Stratum).

Eloa herself is out of stakes-placed mare Cent From Heaven (NZ) (Centaine), making her a half-sister to G1 Diamond S. winner Dal Cielo (NZ) (Per Incanto {USA}), while she is also a sister to I’m In Heaven (NZ) (Volksraad {GB}) - the dam of Lights In Heaven (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}), who won the G1 Australasian Oaks in 2011. Lights In Heaven herself produced Listed Oaklands Plate winner He’s Heaven (Zoustar).

Styx was purchased by her trainer and CW Kwok for NZ$130,000 at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale in 2021.

Warrnambool, Race 1, 1.20pm AEDT, The Midfield Group Mdn Plate, $37,500, 1200m

Zoufire, 3-year-old gelding (Zoustar x Princess Wildfire {Sepoy})

Zoufire finished fourth on debut as a juvenile and then followed up that performance with a fifth-place performance on his first start this term. The son of Zoustar will be looking to make the perfect start to his 3-year-old season when he takes to the Warrnambool track on Sunday, where he will break from barrier seven with John Allen booked to take the ride.

A $300,000 buy for his trainer Danny O’Brien at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, the gelding is out of placed Sepoy mare Princess Wildfire.

Princess Wildfire herself is a daughter of Group 3 scorer Leone Chiara (Lion Hunter) - the dam of dual Group 1-winning Widden Victoria-based sire Star Witness and Group 3 winner and fellow sire Nostradamus.

Further back this is the same family as Group 2-winning pair Chinchilla Rose (Lion Hunter) and Ferocity (Lion Hunter).

Warrnambool, Race 2, 1.55pm AEDT, Sungold Milk Mdn Plate, $37,500, 1400m

Vivideel (NZ), 3-year-old gelding (Dundeel {NZ} x Vivid Vixen {NZ} {Ekraar {USA}})

The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained Vivideel will make his debut at Warrnambool on Sunday, and he will break from barrier six with Mitchell Aitken booked to take the ride.

The son of Dundeel (NZ) was purchased by his trainers and Damon Gabbedy’s Belmont Bloodstock (FBAA) for $190,000 at the 2021 edition of the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the Middlebrook Valley Lodge draft.

The 3-year-old gelding is out of the Listed winner Vivid Vixen (NZ), making him a brother to Sign Seal Deliver (Ekraar {USA}), while she also counts Manhattan Vixen (Manhattan Rain) among her half-siblings.

Further back this is the same family as Hong Kong Champion Stayer Super Kid (NZ) (Gaius {Ire}).

Looking Back

There was no luck with Saturday's selections. Avebury (NZ) (Savabeel) and Desert Safari (Pride Of Dubai) were both unplaced in Races 1 and 2 on the Gold Coast. Our best selection of the day came from the Annabel Neasham-trained Excel D'Or (Exceed And Excel) who managed a gallant third in Race 3.
