Looking Ahead - February 1

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Wednesday at Canterbury Park, we look at the first foal from Woman (Frankel {GB}), a daughter of More Joyous (NZ) (More Than Ready {USA}). At Warrnambool, we look at a debutant half-brother to Super Seth.

Canterbury Park, Race 1, 2.20pm AEDT, Drinkwise Plate, $55,000, 1200m

Snowman, 2-year-old colt (Snitzel x Woman {Frankel {GB}})

This colt has an exceptional pedigree as a Snitzel son of Woman, the latter a daughter of the two Champions Frankel (GB) and More Joyous (NZ) (More Than Ready {USA}). Woman was the first foal from More Joyous in 2014, and Snowman is the first foal from Woman. This is one of Strawberry Hill’s elite families, with the third dam being the Oaks winner Sunday Joy (Sunday Silence {USA}) and the fourth dam being another Oaks winner in Joie Denise (Danehill {USA}).

Strawberry Hill consigned this colt to the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, where he was sold to Chris Waller Racing and Mulcaster Bloodstock for $650,000.

Snowman is trained by Waller at Rosehill and he’s had two trials through January. In the latest, he was a credible third. In this debut he has drawn well in barrier two and will have jockey Nash Rawiller.

Warrnambool, Race 2, 3.05pm AEDT, South West Equine Veterinary Group 3YO Mdn, $37,500, 1300m

Rocket Scientist, 3-year-old gelding (Dundeel {NZ} x Salutations {Redoute’s Choice})

This gelding is a full brother to Waikato Stud’s new sire Super Seth, a winner of the G1 Caulfield Guineas and a pair of Group 3 races during a standout career. He is also a half-brother to Wild Planet, a gelding by Animal Kingdom (USA) whose two Group wins included the G2 Theo Marks S. and G3 Moonga S. The second dam on this page is the Rory’s Jester Group 2 winner Toast Of The Coast.

Rocket Scientist was consigned by Arrowfield Stud to the 2021 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. He was sold to Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock on behalf of Pinecliff Racing for $850,000. He races in the colours of the Pinecliff operation in a partnership that includes Ozzie Kheir, Yes Bloodstock and Rupert Legh, among others.

Rocket Scientist is trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman at Flemington. He’s had three preparations and, in the latest, he was second in a nine-horse trial at home over 1100 metres. He will have jockey Robbie Downey in this debut from the widest alley of barrier 12.

Looking Back

We were absolutely luckless with our Looking Ahead selections at Kembla Grange on Tuesday. Meet Me In Bondi (Snitzel) and Kokoshnik (Pierro) were both scratched.
