The catalogue for the 2023 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale was released on December 16, 2022, and, since then, a host of yearlings on offer at the Swan Valley complex have had their pedigrees enhanced, which is important information for vendors and buyers alike.
Lot 23– Long Leaf x Tarp (Bletchley Park), colt – on account of Dawson Stud
This chestnut colt is a half-brother to the Magnus gelding Sight Success, who is raced in Hong Kong and was Group-placed at the time of catalogue release. However, Sight Success has since improved out of sight. He won the G3 Bauhinia Sprint Trophy and was second in the G1 HKJC Longines Hong Kong Sprint in December, and then finished third in the G1 HKJC Centenary Sprint Cup. He has proved one of Hong Kong’s classiest sprinters.
On that relation alone, Lot 23 will get plenty of inspections. However, there is enough black type on this page to warrant a further look. The third dam, Dark Tzarina (USA) (Rollicking {USA}), produced three stakes winners in Western Australia, notably the Group 3 winner Mobile Link (Is It True {USA}), the G3 Roma Cup winner Papillon (Old Spice) and the Listed-winning, Group-placed Society Miss (Old Spice).
Lot 23 is by the Rangeview Stud resident Long Leaf, who was a triple Listed winner during his career, including the Blue Diamond Preview (Colts and Geldings) and the R. Listed Karaka 3YO Mile. The horse retired to stud in 2020 and these yearlings, 21 in total in the catalogue, are his first crop.
This colt is one of seven horses in the draft for Dawson Stud.

Lot 104 – Tassort x Hazlebrook (Hinchinbrook), colt – on account of Ruby Racing & Breeding
This bright bay colt has had a substantial pedigree update since the release of the catalogue. His Extreme Choice half-brother, the 3-year-old filly Wollombi, was a winner last week of the G3 The Vanity at Flemington. Wollombi is trained by Peter and Paul Snowden and is looking very good as a winner of her last three starts.
The first dam on this page is a half-brother to the stakes winner Everage (Zizou), who was also sharp enough to be second in the G3 Kindergarten S. and Listed Widden S.
Further along, the stakes-placed mare Funster (Rory’s Jester) is the third dam, while the fourth dam is the G3 Debutante S. winner Alshandegha (Vain), who also foaled the stakes-placed Henry’s Hill (Rory’s Jester). This is also the family of the dual Group winner Honalee (Hurricane Sky).
Lot 104 will get plenty of attention this week as one of the 14 horses in the Ruby Racing & Breeding draft. He is the only youngster in the sale by the Newgate Farm resident Tassort.

Lot 124 – Rommel x Leitfaden (Choisir), colt – on account of Ridgeport Holdings
This colt was already well-related at the time of catalogue release as a half-brother to the Listed winner Saintorio (Oratorio), the latter also third in the G2 Western Australian Guineas. However, since then Saintorio was third in the Listed Challenge S. at Ascot and is looking like a progressive type for trainer Stephen Miller.
Lot 124 is the third foal from the Choisir mare Leitfaden, who is especially well-bred. Her dam is a half-sister to the triple Group 1 winner Special Harmony (Spinning World {USA}). Special Harmony is the dam of the triple stakes-winner Little Surfer Girl (Encosta De Lago), in turn the dam of G1 Vinery Stud S. winner Fangirl (Sebring). As such, this is a producing female family.
Also on this page is the G2 Perth Cup winner King Canute (King Of Kings {Ire}), his full brother and G2 Karrakatta Plate winner Redwoldt, and the Listed Hobart Guineas winner Reprisal (Galileo {Ire}).
Lot 124 is one of the 13 yearlings in this sale by the Mogumber Park stallion Rommel, and he is among the 10-horse draft representing Ridgeport Holdings.
