Saturday preview: Six things to keep an eye on

9 min read
It's another weekend of exciting Group 1 action including two big races for the 3-year-olds... the G1 Australian Guineas and the G1 Randwick Guineas. And New Zealand plays host to its biggest race for the Classic horses, the G1 New Zealand Derby. Plenty of juvenile action as well - and plenty are excited about the return of The Everest hero Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) and the Australian debut of the flying New Zealander Imperatriz (I Am Invincible).

Australian Guineas - all quality

One of Australia's great 3-year-old mile contests, the G1 Australian Guineas at Flemington boasts a proud history of not only being one by high-class racehorses - but also by horses who have gone on to well and truly prove their worth at stud.

Such as Zabeel (NZ), Flying Spur, Reset, Al Maher and Shamus Award. Ten of this year's contestants are colts and amongst them are three of the major chances - Jacquinot (Rubick), Elliptical (Dundeel {NZ}) and Attrition (Churchill {Ire}).

Jacquinot, who was acquired by Widden Stud in October last year, seeks to remain undefeated this campaign, the colt is out of a half-sister to the G1 Randwick Guineas winner Inference.

Studmasters will be keeping a close eye on the other two, each of these young horses boasting pedigrees who make them attractive propositions; Elliptical (impressive swamping his rivals in the G3 CS Hayes S.) hailing from the same family as Marauding (NZ), with Cambridge Stud sharing in the ownership and Attrition (good to the line in the CS Hayes despite finding trouble) from a solid black-type family.

A good filly is also capable of taking her place in the Australian Guineas winner's stall - such as Mystic Journey (Needs Further) just four years ago. Just two face the challenge this year but one of those is a very good filly indeed, Legarto (NZ) (Proisir) tasting defeat just once in her six starts in New Zealand.

Randwick Guineas - Aft Cabin to bounce back?

The late, great Colin Hayes always said that it always paid to forgive a good horse one ordinary run and whilst he did do a bit of work, Aft Cabin (Astern) was a little below his best when fifth as a short-priced favourite in the G2 Hobartville S.

He steps up to the mile for the first time and remains favourite in this Group 1 contest at Randwick - though if not for that one glitch on his otherwise impressive record - he'd be even shorter here. So, does he bounce back or can those who finished in front of him last time again have his measure?

The Hobartville was won in determined fashion by Osipenko (NZ) (Pierro) who was scratched from the G1 Australian Guineas to take his place as one of three runners (including the G1 VRC Derby hero Manzoice by Almanzor {Fr) who resumes) for the Waller stable who were successful in this race in 2019 with The Autumn Sun.

Zou Tiger (Zoustar) was game in defeat when second in the Hobartville and Matcha Latte (Maurice {Jpn}) and Williamsburg (Snitzel) were also right in the thick of things.

It certainly seems that the Hobartville is the form race for this.

Since 2011 the double has been taken out on five occasions - by The Autumn Sun, Kementari (Lonhro), Hallowed Crown, Dissident and Ilovethiscity whilst another six winners in that time ran in the Hobartville at their previous start... and like Aft cabin, three of those ran fifth.

Canterbury S. - New Zealand to shine?

It was only three years ago that The Bostonian (NZ) (Jimmy Choux {NZ}) flew the flag for New Zealand in this race at Randwick though he had been on Australian shores for a while. This Saturday sees the Australian debut for a horse whose exciting record sees her a short-priced favourite... the mighty mare Imperatriz (I Am Invincible).

Seventeen starts, 12 wins - four at Group 1 level. She is three from three this time in and as her Yarraman Park-based Champion Sire's most prolific stakes winner, she is undoubtedly high class.

I Am Invincible is well-represented in this race - by the G1 Goodwood H. winner Lombardo and the G3 Southern Cross S. winner Quantico whilst his sire Invincible Spirit (Ire) has last spring's G2 Linlithgow S. winner Old Flame (GB).

Cascadian (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) was in the thick of things in the G1 Memsie S. first-up last time in and was consistent from thereon. Artorius (Flying Artie) - back from his UK sojourn - is yet to win fresh but has always run well and it is exciting to see him partnered by Zac Purton who continues to dominate Hong Kong racing.

With the advantage of a run under his belt, Golden Mile (Astern) looks nicely primed to run well, noting that second-up last spring he bolted in with the G3 Ming Dynasty S. having run a similar lead-up race.

New Zealand Derby - a short-priced favourite

Back to his own age after taking on - and defeating - the older horses in the G1 Herbie Dyke S. at Te Rapa three weeks ago, Sharp 'N' Smart (NZ) (Redwood {GB}) is not surprisingly a short-priced favourite to add this Classic to his already impressive resume.

The winner of five of his 10 starts, he has also been runner-up on four occasions including a game effort in the G1 VRC Derby which followed on from his gutsy G1 Spring Champion S. win over Elliptical and She's Extreme (Extreme Choice) who have certainly proven the worth of that form.

There are big plans afoot for Sharp 'N' Smart who heads back to Australia after this, a crack at the G1 Australian Derby and the G1 Queen Elizabeth S. on the cards. He is highly rated by Graeme Rogerson who has even bigger dreams for the future - such as the G1 Hong Kong Vase in December.

In the meantime, he has this nut to crack though he is clearly the one to beat.

Desert Lightning (NZ) (Pride Of Dubai) can challenge having finished off so strongly to win the G2 Avondale Guineas over 2100 metres, a race in which Waitak (NZ) (Proisir) tried hard as runner-up. Mark Twain (NZ) (Shocking) looks to be the up-and-comer of the field... he tackles stakes class for the first time but has been good winning two of his first four starts.

Challenge S. - Giga Kick returns

Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) attempts to emulate Redzel (Snitzel) as an The Everest winner kicking off his next campaign with a win in this feature sprinting contest run at Randwick, whilst Eduardo (Host {Chi}) seeks history as the third three-time winner.

Between 1982 and 1987 two horses accomplished that feat - Razor Sharp (Steel Pulse {GB}) and At Sea (Aurealis) whilst Eduardo is one of three two-time winners since that time.

Two years ago, he won this race first-up, last year second-up off a G1 Lightning S. third. He was in winning form first-up last time in too, proving a class above his rivals in the G3 Concorde S.

The Everest hero Giga Kick returns in the G2 Challenge S. at Randwick | Image courtesy of Ashlea Brennan

Giga Kick also knows how to pull out a great fresh run - two from two first-up. Of course, his overall record is hard to fault - he has only been beaten once! He jumped out at Cranbourne early last month and how's the form from that 800-metre dash... he split Coolangatta (Written Tycoon) and I Wish I Win (NZ) (Savabeel)!

It may well be that Giga Kick's owner Jonathan Munz has two reasons to cheer here, a major chance for the quinella with the lightly raced and very promising Passive Aggressive (Fastnet Rock) also taking her place. She too really knows how to find the line, winning four of her first five starts.

Remarque (Snitzel) has been in flying form since being gelded whilst Paulele (Dawn Approach {Ire}) resumes off his biggest win in the G1 Winterbottom S. in Perth in late November.

The juveniles - three 2-year-old stakes races in two cities

The G1 Golden Slipper S. is rapidly approaching, and it always pays to keep a close eye on such lead-ups as the G2 Todman S. and the G2 Reisling S. - two quality juvenile contests taking place at Randwick on Saturday.

Current Golden Slipper favourite Learning To Fly (Justify {USA}) has been ridden differently at her first two starts and has impressed on both occasions; hence her very short quote in the Reisling.

Will it prove to be a one-horse race or can Kundalini (I Am Invincible) turn the tables? There is interest with debutant Mathkhoora (also by I Am Invincible) a daughter of the G1 Golden Slipper winner Mossfun (Mossman) who impressed with an easy Rosehill trial victory.

1/2

Gallery: Some of the juveniles to watch, images courtesy of Ashlea Brennan

There is an odds-on shot in the Todman as well, Red Resistance (Russian Revolution) again hard to beat having bolted in with a Warwick Farm trial since leading throughout to win his first two. Cylinder (Exceed And Excel) is the threat - too good in the G2 Silver Slipper S. having run second last spring to G1 Blue Diamond S. winner Little Brose (Per Incanto {USA}).

The opening event at Flemington - the Listed Furphy Trophy - is also for the 2-year-olds, a race in which most of the attention is centering around horses who are yet to face the starter.

Such as the two-time Randwick trial winner Butch Cassidy (Written Tycoon) - a $750,000 Magic Millions graduate and the Godolphin homebred and Flemington jump-out winner Massira (I Am Invincible) from Astern's in-form family.

Interstate black type the main draw card for Fernie’s Flemington trio

9 min read
Perth trainer Luke Fernie is an unfamiliar name on the Melbourne racing scene, but that could all change on Saturday as he prepares to saddle a trio of runners at Flemington. We caught up with the young horseman to learn a bit more about his three contenders and find out how his first interstate assault has gone thus far.

Fernie is no stranger to success in his home state of Western Australia, having prepared subsequent Group 1 winner Sheeza Belter (Gold Standard) to win the lucrative R. Listed Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic prior to her joining the Peter and Paul Snowden stable in Sydney. The trainer also celebrated feature-race glory just two weeks ago, courtesy of Man Crush’s (Manhattan Rain) dominant victory in the R. Listed Magic Millions WA 3YO Trophy at Pinjarra.

An elite-level win on Melbourne’s biggest stage would undoubtedly go a long way to taking his training career to the next level, however, Fernie is hopeful that one of Shaddow Fear (Sioux Nation {USA}), Wild Belle (Pride Of Dubai) or Laced Up Heels (Toronado {Ire}) can provide him with a landmark success on his maiden voyage across the Nullarbor.

Having taken out his licence as recently as 2019, Fernie is not one to shy away from a challenge, and the trainer is relishing the prospect of going up against some of the eastern seaboard’s most talented horses in a bid to secure valuable black type for his trio of fillies.

“Laced Up Heels was always going to come over, and then Wild Belle had shown me plenty at home to suggest that she’d be good enough to match it over here, so I thought we may as well come over and have a throw at the stumps,” Fernie said.

“The 2-year-old (Shaddow Fear) was going good in WA, and while she was up and running and her fitness levels were there, we thought we’d come and see if we could put some black type to her name as well.

“That’s the reason they’re all over here. Hopefully tomorrow is the day!”

Laced Up Heels, who is out of a half-sister to the dam of G1 Canterbury S. heroine Mizzy (Zoustar), already has the benefit of some black type to her name, having landed the Listed Burgess Queen S. in November, a race in which she became the first and only horse to inflict defeat on star WA galloper Amelia’s Jewel (Siyouni {Fr}) under race conditions.

Just like Amelia’s Jewel subsequently managed after the pair locked horns in November, Fernie is hopeful that Laced Up Heels can add a Group 1 win to her resume, but the trainer is fully aware of the size of the task awaiting her in Saturday’s G1 Australian Guineas at Flemington.

“She definitely needs to improve, but I don’t think that she has been at her top since she has been over here,” he said.

“Any race is a hard race to win regardless, and a Group 1 makes it that little bit harder. It’s obviously a very good field and she’s going to have to be at the top of her game to match it with those good ones.

“She (Laced Up Heels) definitely needs to improve... and she’s going to have to be at the top of her game to match it with those good ones (in the G1 Australian Guineas).” - Luke Fernie

“I’ve always known that she’s very, very smart, but I haven’t had many Group 1 horses. I’ve only ever had a handful of runners in Group 1s, so it’s hard to judge, especially with the different form lines between WA and Victoria.

“It’s hopeful more than anything, but hopefully we see the best of her tomorrow.”

Laced Up Heels will be stepping up to the mile for the first time this preparation having run two solid races in defeat on her first two starts in Melbourne. The most recent of those came last weekend when fourth, beaten 2.25l, in the G2 Angus Armanasco S. at Sandown, a race from which her trainer expects the daughter of Swettenham Stud stallion Toronado (Ire) to make good improvement.

Having geared her campaign around an audacious tilt at the $5 million The All-Star Mile, Fernie revealed that the Australian Guineas had always been on the agenda for Laced Up Heels, and the trainer is confident that his progressive 3-year-old can take the quick back-up in her stride.

Toronado (Ire) | Standing at Swettenham Stud

“We were always going to back up into the Guineas after last week, so we’ve stuck to the plan so far and hopefully it pays off,” he said.

“I don’t know if she ran out of puff the other day, I think she just levelled out. The first-up run might have taken a little bit more out of her than I first thought, and I reckon it just took the zip out of her last 100 metres.

“She’s eaten everything and pulled up super, she’s bouncing around, so hopefully an easy week with a little bit of change to her training should bring out the best of her.

“She’s (Laced Up Heels) eaten everything and pulled up super (from her first-up run), she’s bouncing around, so hopefully an easy week with a little bit of change to her training should bring out the best of her.” - Luke Fernie

“Getting her into The All-Star Mile was the plan. It was wishful thinking, but it’s there, so you may as well have a crack at it. We haven’t quite got there at the moment, but we’ll have to see how things pan out.”

Reason to cheer

Few will be celebrating more than Fernie should Laced Up Heels spring a surprise in Saturday’s G1 Australian Guineas, although the team at Supreme Thoroughbreds may give the Perth trainer a run for his money.

Supreme are set to sell Laced Up Heels’ half-sister (Lot 253) by Arrowfield Stud stallion Shalaa (Ire) late in the opening session of the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale on Sunday and will be hoping that Fernie’s charge can add the title of Group 1 performer to her already impressive resume.

Laced Up Heels is herself a graduate of the Premier Sale, having been snapped up by Boomer Bloodstock on behalf of owner-breeder Eddie Rigg from the Supreme Thoroughbreds draft for $100,000 back in 2021.

Fernie is sure to be one of a number of interested onlookers when her half-sister enters the ring at Oaklands Junction on Sunday, and the trainer is hopeful that he can come away with some new recruits to add to his burgeoning operation back home.

“I was out at Inglis on Wednesday, and I’ll duck out there again today (Friday) to see what we can find,” he said.

“There’s some big money floating about at the minute, but I’m certainly going to go and have a look at her (Laced Up Heels') half-sister."

Belle living up to her name

Nothing would give Fernie more confidence heading into the Premier Sale than a winner at Flemington on Saturday, and the trainer revealed that his best chance of landing a first Melbourne success most likely lies with Wild Belle, who is a clear favourite with TAB for the VRC Life Member John Ford Sprint over 1000 metres.

The stakes-placed daughter of Coolmore stallion Pride Of Dubai was purchased for $80,000 from the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale by one of Fernie’s biggest supporters, Kim Doak, and has won three of her five career starts to date, including a 3.66l romp at Ascot last time out.

“I have a massive opinion of her, so I’m hoping she lives up to that tomorrow,” Fernie said.

“She is really progressive; she’s always been one that will hopefully do good things and we’ll find out tomorrow where we’re at with her.

“I think she’ll be competitive in any race she ever runs in, she’s just got that nature of a competitor. She always wants to put her best foot forward and go fast, and I think that’s what you need for any horse over the shorter course.

“I have a massive opinion of her (Wild Belle)... She is really progressive; she’s always been one that will hopefully do good things and we’ll find out tomorrow (Saturday) where we’re at with her.” - Luke Fernie

“I imagine she’d be the most likely winner of my three, she’s ticking all the right boxes and it looks a nice enough race for her. I think the market shows that as well.”

While the market hasn’t missed Wild Belle, Fernie feels that his third runner on the card, Shaddow Fear, may have been overlooked in the Listed Furphy Trophy on account of her last-start effort, in which she came home last of 15 in the G2 Blue Diamond Prelude for fillies.

Fernie revealed that Shaddow Fear had valid excuses for her below-par performance that day and is expecting the daughter of one-time Swettenham Stud shuttler Sioux Nation (USA) to bounce back to the sort of form that saw her win her first two starts in impressive fashion.

“It was horrible. Nothing went right for her,” Fernie said of her last start. “She was kicking out in the gates, which is very unlike her.

“She got there on the Tuesday and raced on the Saturday, so I think with the travel over there it might have all come too soon for her.

“Since then, her work has been good, and she’s done everything right. She hasn’t gone backwards, she’s going the same way she was when she was winning her races in Perth.

“Her first start here was definitely out of character, and I can’t see why she won’t run a good race on Saturday.”

A learning curve

Regardless of how his runners fare at Flemington on Saturday, Fernie intends to use his very first interstate raid, which he revealed has been a tremendous learning experience, as a foundation from which to build his fledgling training career.

“Travelling horses over from WA is very stressful, but I have good people around me and good support, so it has made it a lot easier,” he said.

“It has been eye opening and I’m certainly not disappointed that I’ve done it, but I’ll learn plenty from it as well.

“It has been eye opening and I’m certainly not disappointed that I’ve done it, but I’ll learn plenty from it as well.” - Luke Fernie

“The plan would be to travel horses over again in the future, but when you’ve got a good batch it’s easier to do. Some years you’re going to end up with some slow ones and not have the same amount of luck, but hopefully we can just keep building from this.

“It’d be a massive sigh of relief when one goes over the line in front.”

Shadow Hill shooting for its sixth year of Premier growth

8 min read
Shadow Hill Thoroughbreds is one of the boutique vendors at this week’s Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, though its owners are anything but boutique in experience. Kim and Dale Alderton spent 18 years at Eliza Park which, we discovered, has been priceless in the success they’ve had out on their own.

There are 66 vendors this week at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, among them the family-owned, Avenel-based Shadow Hill Thoroughbreds. Owned and operated by Kim and Dale Alderton, this farm has operated since 2013.

If the Alderton name rings any bells in distant memory, it’s because both Kim and Dale worked at Eliza Park in management roles for 18 years. As such, they’re old hands in Victorian circles, which helped them kick-start their farm a decade ago.

Set into rolling country around Avenel, Shadow Hill Thoroughbreds is 180 acres of former sheep property. From scratch, the Aldertons built fences and designed paddocks, yards and stabling. They even had to build a home.

“From the ground up, we’ve done it all ourselves,” said Kim Alderton, speaking this week with TDN AusNZ. “Everything had to go in, but we realised pretty quickly that it was a very good property and it carried very good numbers.”

Business is good at Shadow Hill Thoroughbreds. The couple recently bought a neighbouring 200 acres, and Alderton admits that they’re turning away new clients more often than advertising for them. Part of that is because they brought a strong reputation with them to Avenel.

“Our intentions were to move in here and remain boutique,” she said. “Having worked on other farms with huge numbers, we wanted to have a tidy, boutique operation for ourselves. Our first year or two we had only 20 or so permanent mares, but up in the breeding season this year we had 140, foaling 77.

“Those are our maximum numbers, really. We want to enjoy our job and look after the farm, in terms of not overstocking and so on. Our intention is to not become a massive operation.”

“Our intentions were to move in here (to Shadow Hill) and remain boutique. Having worked on other farms with huge numbers, we wanted to have a tidy, boutique operation for ourselves.” - Kim Alderton

Alderton’s years at Eliza Park were as a broodmare, farm and stud manager. She ran the Berrigan property, where much of the broodmare activity occurred. When Berrigan was closed, she went to Paringa Park at Nagambie, which was leased by Eliza Park and, later, Sun Stud.

Between them, the couple gained priceless insight into highly commercial, large-number farms, making them confident and qualified when opening Shadow Hill Thoroughbreds.

“I brought with me a broad knowledge of every area,” Alderton said. “I started at Eliza Park six months after it opened, and I went through every area from assistant broodmare manager to assistant yearling manager, then broodmare manager to running the New South Wales division, weaning and handling the yearling prep.

“Eventually I was stud manager and I think knowing each aspect of the game has been really valuable.”

A nicely rolling stone

Shadow Hill’s draft this week numbers 11, which mirrors its 2022 draft at Melbourne Premier. Last year, its best-seller at this sale was a Written Tycoon filly from Foxy Housewife (Foxwedge), who is unraced with Joseph Pride and now named Urafiki.

Four of the Shadow Hill yearlings last year sold for $200,000 plus, and six of the 11 made six figures. It’s been a nicely rolling stone for the farm from its inaugural Premier draft of just two in 2018.

“Our first year, we just had two and we felt that would roll along,” Alderton said. “At that point, Sun Stud had decided not to continue and a lot of the clients were looking for somewhere to send their mares, which was the reason we started our own business early.

“It went from there, really. A lot of people knew us from our 18 years at Eliza Park and Sun Stud, so word of mouth really helped us along. We had really good clients from the start and, while the numbers were small initially, we’ve not really had any trouble growing to the numbers we’re at now.”

“At that point (2013), Sun Stud had decided not to continue and a lot of the clients were looking for somewhere to send their mares, which was the reason we started our own business early.” - Kim Alderton

Among the Shadow Hill clients are the likes of Rifa Mustang, Rob Roulston and Tanami Transport magnate Viv Oldfield. There are many others, and their loyalty has been appreciated by Alderton.

“We have a really good group of clients and we really want to look after them,” she said. “That means quality over quantity, which can be hard sometimes because we get a lot of people calling. We don’t want to be turning people away but, at the same time, we want to do the right thing by the farm, our existing clients and by our staff.”

Natural progression has seen the couple's Premier presence grow from two yearlings in 2018 to four the next year, three six-figure horses in 2020, and then 12 yearlings or so the last three years.

Alderton said she could easily balloon the numbers to a draft of 30, but up to 15 is her sweet spot.

The draft

The Shadow Hill draft this week represents nine individual stallions. They are from such locals as Brazen Beau, Puissance De Lune (Ire), Shamus Award, Alabama Express and Toronado (Ire).

Inglis Premier is a home sale for Victoria, so you’d expect a good showing of home-standing sires, but Shadow Hill also has an Extreme Choice filly (Lot 168) and another by Zousain (Lot 156), both sires standing north of the border.

“It’s a really nice draft, which is already the feedback we’re getting,” Alderton said. “All but four of these yearlings belong to our clients, and all bar one were raised on the farm.

“The Extreme Choice was born and raised with us for Peter Anastasiou, who’s another good client of ours. He owns her and Lot 222 by Shamus Award, and those two mares are resident with us. The dam of the Extreme Choice filly arrived to us in foal and she (Lot 168) is a lovely type. The stallion is doing a great job too and she’ll be well-received.”

“It’s a really nice draft, which is already the feedback we’re getting.” - Kim Alderton

Lot 815, by Puissance De Lune, hails directly from the family of Mimi Le Brock (Show A Heart). Lot 156 is from Soul Mama (Charge Forward), a full sister to the dam of Zoustar sisters Sunlight and Sisstar.

Shadow Hill throws its weight into the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale each year, meaning its best come to Oaklands. It has consigned horses with Sledmere and KBL Thoroughbreds in the past, but this only occurs when horses head to Sydney or the Gold Coast.

1/3

“We often get asked what horses we've had come off the property, but in those earliest years we had only 10, maybe 15 maximum weanlings,” Alderton said. “From those, a few good 2-year-olds emerged. We had Cut It Out, Galactic Express and Ashford Street, which was nice for a little farm still get going.

“Those horses are still running on, so they’re showing longevity and we feel we’re not far away from cracking that really good Group horse.”

The Victorian picture

Alderton is expecting a positive week at Oaklands. The draft feedback has been good and, in her own words, it’s one of the best-presented she can remember. With so many years at the helm of a Victorian operation, is there anything about the state’s breeding industry now that differs from all her years at Eliza Park?

“I think Victorian breeding is starting to be more recognised,” she said. “There have been a lot of champion racehorses that have been bred in Victoria, and we had Black Caviar’s mum at Eliza Park, for example.

“It also seems like there are a few people who specifically target the Melbourne sale, so it really isn’t a sale for just that second tier. You can find really good value here from really good pedigrees.”

“It also seems like there are a few people who specifically target the Melbourne sale, so it really isn’t a sale for just that second tier. You can find really good value here from really good pedigrees.” - Kim Alderton

As such, the Premier Yearling Sale has come into its own, and that’s to the benefit of smaller breeders like Shadow Hill Thoroughbreds. Alderton said the VOBIS Scheme has played its part, helping participants within the industry, but also bringing in new participants.

“We’ve also enjoyed huge improvements in the stallion ranks down here,” she said. “We’ve been lucky with Written Tycoon, but even Widden bringing Nicconi down. Nicconi is a good stallion for the Victorian market, so all of it has really come together.”

Shadow Hill Thoroughbreds can be visited this week at Barn H at Oaklands Junction as the team knuckles down for its sixth appearance at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

Emerging talent: Queen of the Highways destined for a big training future

7 min read
The ranks of New South Wales training have recently seen the emergence of Seib Racing, piloted by the go-getter Danielle Seib. We caught up with her to find out more about her Goulburn operation and how an association with Champion Thoroughbreds came to be.

Cover image courtesy of Seib Racing

Danielle Seib has established herself as one of New South Wales’ most promising young talents in the training ranks. Recording a strike rate of 15 per cent from a stable of only 28, she places her small team studiously, taking advantage of Racing NSW’s rich Highway incentives.

Sieb is the daughter of the late Lewis Seib, who passed away in 2017 and was a popular trainer from Muswellbrook. Lewis Sieb was involved in racing his whole life and was a key member of the Brian Mayfield-Smith stable. He ended Tommy Smith’s 33 consecutive Sydney Premierships, breaking Smith’s dominance over Sydney racing.

Lewis Sieb left an indelible mark on his daughter, and Danielle Sieb credits her father for fostering her love of horses. She describes the relationship with her father as “incredibly close”.

“He was a real role model,” she said, speaking to TDN AusNZ. “A patient, humble man and an excellent horseman.”

Sieb’s earliest memories of falling in love with horses was when she was four years old at Mudgee races.

“I sat on the back of a racehorse named Black Pixie,” she said. “I was obsessed with them from that day on, and I harassed my parents for a year for riding lessons until they finally gave in. I started Pony Club and eventing from age five.”

“I sat on the back of a racehorse named Black Pixie. I was obsessed with them from that day on...” - Danielle Seib

Working at the renowned Arrowfield Stud, Seib engaged in everything from the preparation of yearlings and caretaking of the stud’s extensive broodmare population to pre-training and educating young thoroughbreds. A talented and competent rider, Sieb rode trackwork and in barrier trials while helping her father when he took out his own trainer’s licence. All were experiences that Seib credits with forging a successful training career.

Starting university in 2015 and studying a Bachelor of Secondary Education, Sieb had ambitions of completing a jockey’s apprenticeship after the completion of her studies. However, after losing her father in 2017, the apprenticeship ambition was put on hold. She took out her trainer’s licence and took responsibility for a team of eight.

Finishing her degree online after moving to Goulburn, Seib graduated from a Bachelor of Secondary Education with Honours in Science, majoring in Biology in 2020. She became a foreman for the popular Goulburn trainer Danny Williams for several months, while juggling building her own team on the side and teaching at Crookwell High School.

The Seib family owned Assault’N’Bathory (Murtajill) is credited as the horse that launched her training career. Seib trained the now retired 9-year-old gelding to five victories, including two Highway races at Rosehill Gardens and Royal Randwick in 2019 and 2020.

Seib’s effervescent albeit humble personality quickly attracted the attention of Jason Abrahams’ Champion Thoroughbreds. That company’s Racing Manager, Emma Guymer, explained why Seib was a natural fit for them.

“We had been on the look-out for a suitable country trainer for quite some time, given the recent increases in prizemoney with the addition of country-boosted races,” she said. “We wanted to have an option for our horses that weren’t up to the metropolitan grade but were competitive at the provincial level.

“We noticed an interview on Sky Thoroughbred Central where Richard Callander interviewed Danielle between races at one of the Canterbury night meetings early last year. She impressed us in that interview and we kept an eye on her results that season.

“Danielle ended up having the second-best strike rate in NSW last season and we were very keen to send her a horse when the opportunity arose. That horse, in turn, was King Of Spades.”

King Of Spades (Xtravagant {NZ}) provided Seib with her first Highway winner for Champion Thoroughbreds when winning a $120,000 Highway at Royal Randwick on December 31. Smokeshow (Winning Rupert) and Amarantz (Animal Kingdom {USA}) would quickly follow, winning Highways at Royal Randwick on January 21 and February 11 for Seib and the Champion Thoroughbreds team.

Seib’s location of Goulburn was ideal when it came to a provincial base for the Champion Thoroughbreds horses.

“Goulburn is only two hours from the city, so our horses wouldn’t have to travel too far,” Guymer said. “And it is still close enough that our owners can access their horses for stable visits.”

Prompted as to why the Champion Thoroughbreds team felt Seib is having success with training its runners, Guymer answered; “Danielle has great attention to detail, she seems to understand each horse individually and what they need. In that sense she is a true horse person. She is not afraid to travel a horse, and therefore can place her horses very well. She has a great team around her, particularly with her partner Aaron, and it certainly reflects in their results.”

“Danielle is a fantastic communicator both during the week and on raceday, and our owners are thoroughly enjoying the experience with Seib Racing.”

Seib’s passion for training thoroughbreds and the clients that support her is evident.

“I love the buzz and enjoyment clients get from their horses, especially when their patience is rewarded,” she said. “We pride ourselves on great communication and attention to detail.”

A prime example of patience turning into results at the Seib stables is Tudor Prince (All Too Hard). The now 7-year-old gelding came to Seib’s care with previous tendon injuries and a wind operation. Seib persevered and Tudor Prince has won a further four races in a row, including two midweek metropolitan races for his patient owners.

“I find it very rewarding to get a new horse into the stable and work with them closely. I ride a lot of my own work and my partner Aaron is the stable farrier,” Seib said. “I make them happy and confident and see them bring that attitude to raceday.”

With a stable of 28 horses and growing, Seib is upbeat about the potential of two 3-year-old geldings in her barn, Associate (Star Witness) and Stand In Line (NZ) (Tivaci).

“I think they can progress through Highway grade and into benchmark racing,” she said. “I also have a great crop of 2-year-olds by sires such as Deep Field, The Autumn Sun and Dark Angel that I’m excited about.”

Seib spoke with great enthusiasm about her recent 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase, a yearling filly by Brutal (NZ), a son of O’Reilly (NZ), out of Exceed And Excel mare Exselva. She purchased this horse from the Manx Park draft for $90,000.

“She is a half-sister to a stakes winner from a real black-type family that has always sold well. I was a big fan of O’Reilly and I’m hopeful Brutal can do a similar job”.

All in all, Danielle Seib is the quintessential girl that loves horses.

“They are intelligent, challenging and admirable athletes. I really love horses and their company,” she said.

G3 Newcastle S., $200,000, 1400m

It was an excellent front-running display by the G1 Doncaster H.-bound Cross Talk (NZ) (Keano {NZ}) who provided Gai Waterhouse with her fifth race in this Newcastle feature.

The even money favourite - now a dual stakes winner on the back of his Listed Winter Challenge S. success last year - was bred by K J Caldwell.

He is the sole stakes winner for his Listed Lighting H.-winning sire, a Pins horse who stands at Sentry Hill Farms.

He is the final foal and one of two winners for the unraced Mrs Cross (NZ) (Cape Cross {Ire}) who has also produced the Eagle Farm winner Man With The Plan (NZ) (Citi Habit {NZ}).

Cross Talk's grandam is the G3 Sweet Embrace S. winner Postage Due (Luskin Star) whose G1 Thousand Guineas-winning half-sister Copperama (Comeran {Fr}) is the grandam of the Group 1 winners Danestorm (Danehill {USA}) and Danendri (Danehill {USA}).

Also from this family are the fellow big-race winners Bonham (NZ) (Per Incanto {USA}) and Faint Perfume (Shamardal {USA}).

Cross Talk is one of 30 stakes winners line-bred to Pins' damsire Kaoru Star, his other strain being the great Luskin Star (Mrs Cross' second damsire).

Cross Talk leads all the way for first Group win

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s New Zealand import Cross Talk (NZ) (Keano {NZ}) recorded his second stakes victory since crossing the Tasman with a typically gutsy front-running display in the G3 Newcastle S. on Friday afternoon, the race formerly known as the Newcastle Newmarket H.

Immediately sent to the front by Tim Clark, Cross Talk entered the straight with a commanding lead over his rivals and held on gamely to defeat Gem Song (Your Song), who won the race in 2021, by 0.5l.

Cross Talk, who will now be set on a path to the G1 Doncaster H., brought up a fifth success in the race for co-trainer Gai Waterhouse and also provided his sire Keano (NZ) with a first Group winner.

“He is a horse that can trick you as to how fast you're going but I did want to make it a bit of a test,” winning jockey Tim Clark said.

“I thought if I went too slow, they'd outsprint me on top of the ground so if I dragged the sprint out of them, that would be the key to winning the race.

“If he happens to get into a race over the (Sydney) carnival and there's a bit a rain about, as it can so often happen, it'll enhance his chances to no end.”

Keano stands at Sentry Hill Farms in Taranaki and has produced 23 winners from 37 runners to date.

Kintrye spearheads treble for Hallowed Crown

Twin Hills Stud stallion Hallowed Crown enjoyed a fruitful day on the track on Friday, siring a trio of winners across three different venues.

The Group 1-producing sire was handed his first juvenile winner of the season when Kintrye, who contested the $1 million Golden Gift earlier in the season, sprung a minor surprise in the 2-year-old contest at Newcastle, beating last-start metropolitan winner Inhibitions (Zoustar) by a short head.

Winners followed at Cairns and Dubbo for the dual Group 1-winning son of Street Sense (USA), who stood at Twin Hills for a fee of $11,000 (inc GST) last year.

Hallowed Crown, whose progeny are spearheaded by dual Group 1 heroine Colette, has one lot catalogued for the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, which gets underway at Oaklands Junction on Sunday.

Proisir share and Group 1 winner headline Inglis Digital entries

Group 1 winner Superstorm (Sebring) and a share in red-hot stallion Proisir headline a diverse catalogue for the Inglis Digital March (Early) Sale, with bidding getting underway on Friday afternoon.

Standing at Rich Hill Stud in New Zealand, Proisir has already had four Group 1 winners and 16 black-type horses since 2022 including the likes of Legarto (NZ), who lines up in the G1 Australian Guineas at Flemington on Saturday.

“We’re genuinely excited to be offering this share in Proisir, he’s such an untapped young stallion with incredible early results,’’ Inglis Digital business manager Nick Melmeth said.

Proisir | Standing at Rich Hill Stud

“This really is a unique opportunity to become involved in such an impressive stallion. One can only imagine how valuable Proisir will continue to be in years to come so this is the perfect time to be getting in with him.’’

Six-year-old Superstorm, who landed the G1 Cantala S. in 2021 and finished second in The All-Star Mile won by his former stablemate Regal Power (Pierro), is being offered by his owners Bob and Sandra Peters.

Other highlights in the 315-strong catalogue include Listed McKenzie S. winner He’s Xceptional (Xtravagant {NZ}), who has won two of his past four starts, while recently retired stakes-placed mare Snippy Fox (Foxwedge) and Group 3-placed juvenile Policiere (Safeguard), who is being offered in foal to in-demand stallion Maurice (Jpn), headline the broodmare section of the catalogue.

Everest winner up to the Challenge

Craig Williams has every confidence that Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) has thrived during his most recent spell and is relishing the prospect of getting back aboard The Everest winner in Saturday’s G2 Challenge S. at Royal Randwick.

Giga Kick tasted defeat for the very first time on his final start in the spring, but the Clayton Douglas-trained 3-year-old had barely put a foot wrong prior to that, winning all five of his previous races including a memorable success in the $15 million The Everest.

“We're really excited about showing everyone else, in a race, how this horse has come on and where he's at,” Williams said.

“When I look at him physically, you can see his body mass has turned into muscle mass and he's not even the finished product yet.

“Clayton is delighted with where he's at and with his improvement, I've felt that in the two pieces of work that I've done on him, and (now) he has to do the talking for us.”

Giga Kick is set to face eight rivals in Saturday’s Challenge S., including Eduardo (Host {Chi}), who has won the Group 2 contest for the past two years.

Rawiller relishing ride on ‘special’ colt

An impressive piece of work earlier in the week has left leading jockey Nash Rawiller relishing the prospect of partnering exciting 2-year-old Cafe Millenium (Not A Single Doubt) in Saturday’s G2 Todman S. at Randwick.

Trained by John O’Shea, Cafe Millenium announced himself as a worthy contender for the autumn’s juvenile features with a scintillating debut win the in Pierro Plate, where he came from miles off the pace to defeat a field which included subsequent G1 Blue Diamond S. runner-up Don Corleone (Extreme Choice).

“I galloped him on Tuesday morning, he's such a unique animal,” Rawiller said. “There's something special about him and I'm excited to be riding him in a race.

Nash Rawiller | Image courtesy of Ashlea Brennan

“I sat right off a maiden, a little bit like he was in his first run he was off the bridle for some time but when we got down to the business end, he was strong as a bull so hopefully we get a chance to see that.

“He's going to be better suited by the pressure of a (G1 Golden) Slipper but he's a nice horse and don't underestimate him.”

Cafe Millenium will face only four rivals in a small but select field for the Todman S, including unbeaten colt Red Resistance (Russian Revolution), who is currently second favourite for the G1 Golden Slipper S.

Mazu impresses in Flemington hitout

Any fears that G1 Doomben 10,000 winner Mazu (Maurice {Jpn}) would struggle down the Flemington straight were quashed on Friday morning according to his co-trainer Peter Snowden, who watched on as his stable star tuned up for his return to action in the G1 Newmarket H. with an impressive jump-out win down the straight.

Mazu worked through the line strongly in the 800-metre hitout, and his co-trainer is delighted with how the son of Maurice (Jpn) is tracking ahead of his Vicotrian debut at Flemington next weekend.

“He had a little look down there, he went nice and straight and pulled up really well,” Snowden, who trains in partnership with his son Paul, told Racing.com.

Mazu | Image courtesy of The Image Is Everything

“It was like he'd been here 100 times. We only got here on Thursday morning and he just had a look around, and then this morning he was excellent.

“It gives you a bit of confidence that it (straight course) is going to be fine for him. It is a big test as down the straight is not easy.

“He's definitely stronger than last preparation and he's getting a lot better to work with as he's always been an intense sort of horse.

“He's filled out now and I was very impressed with him this morning (Friday).”

Alenquer handed first All-Star Mile wildcard

Group 1-winning European import Alenquer (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}) has been announced as the first horse to be handed one of the five wildcards for this year’s $5 million The All-Star Mile, which is set to be run at The Valley on March 18.

Previously trained in Britain by William Haggas, Alenquer was last seen finishing ninth in the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp prior to being purchased by Australian interests, and the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup winner joined the stable the stable of Mike Moroney in December, much to the trainer’s delight.

“He’s a Group 1 winner in Ireland and has contested the past two Arc de Triomphes. He’s got plenty of class,” Moroney told Racing.com.

“He’s settled in really well at Flemington since arriving from overseas and we’ve been pleased with how he’s come to hand in his first prep for the stable.

“We’re excited to unveil him at The Valley in a fortnight. Fresh up over a mile we think he’s going to be a serious player in The All-Star Mile.”

Alenquer will don the navy and yellow lightning silks made famous by the likes of elite sprinters Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) and Masked Crusader (Toronado {Ire}) in recent times.

Orting vying for first stakes win

South Auckland trainer Sophia Orting is optimistic that her lightly raced 4-year-old Master Brutus (NZ) (Swiss Ace) can land the trainer her first stakes win when he takes his chance in the Listed Mufhasa S. at Te Rapa on Saturday.

The son of Westbury Stud stallion Swiss Ace came agonizingly close to handing his trainer an elusive stakes breakthrough when beaten only a short head into second by Maven Belle (NZ) (Burgundy {NZ}) in the G3 Almanzor Trophy (1200 metres) back in January, on what was just his fourth race start.

Master Brutus will need to reverse the placings with Maven Belle, who re-opposes on Saturday, but Orting is confident that her stable star is due for a change of luck.

Master Brutus (NZ) | Image courtesy of Trish Dunell

“He has done very well since his last race,” Orting told NZTM. “I can’t fault his work and I think the 1400 metres will suit.

“From a better barrier (seven) hopefully we can get in a better position than last time. He hasn’t missed a placing and to be fair to him he has been unlucky a couple of times.

“We were very happy with his run in the Almanzor, he was very close that day. It is a very strong field tomorrow (Saturday), but he was meeting good horses then.

“We can’t fault the horse. He is very well in himself.”

Maloney passed fit to ride

Jockey Ryan Maloney has confirmed that he is fit to partner Williamsburg (Snitzel) in Saturday’s G1 Randwick Guineas after he was stood down from the remainder of his rides at Ipswich on Thursday.

Maloney’s mount Flying Rupert (Winning Rupert) became fractious in the barriers ahead of the second event, in an incident which prompted the in-form jockey to head to hospital for precautionary x-rays on his neck.

Much to Maloney’s relief, the x-rays came back clear, leaving him free to partner the Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained colt as the jockey chases two Group 1 wins in the space of a week, having landed last weekend's G1 Surround S. with Sunshine In Paris (Invader).

Kah and McDonald to ride in HK Derby

Leading Australian riders Jamie Kah and James McDonald have been granted permission to ride in the G1 Hong Kong Derby at Sha Tin later this month.

Kah has been called up to partner the Caspar Fownes-trained Galaxy Witness (Star Witness), who was third in last Saturday’s Hong Kong Classic Cup, while McDonald looks set to continue his association with last year’s G1 South Australian Derby winner Beautyverse (NZ) (Tarzino {NZ}), who needs to bounce back from a below par effort in the same contest.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club has also arranged for Kah, who landed the Hong Kong Classic Mile aboard Voyage Bubble (Deep Field) on her first ever trip to Sha Tin, to be available to accept rides at the Happy Valley race meeting the following Wednesday.

Looking Ahead - March 4

4 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

With juvenile races hotting up around the country as the G1 Golden Slipper approaches, we take a look at a pair of regally bred 2-year-olds making their eagerly anticipated debuts.

Flemington, Race 1, 12.35pm AEDT, Listed Furphy Trophy, $175,000, 1000m

Massira, 2-year-old colt (I Am Invincible x Marrakesh {Lonhro})

A host of runners from Saturday’s Listed Furphy Trophy at Flemington could have been chosen in this space, not least $1.2 million Magic Millions graduate Mach Ten (Exceed And Excel) or impressive recent trial winner Butch Cassidy (Written Tycoon), but Godolphin’s Massira gets the nod on account of his regal pedigree.

Massira is out of the well-related mare Marrakesh, a three-time winner by Lonhro and a sibling to four stakes winners, most notably Darley stallion Astern, Newgate stallion Tassort and multiple Group 1-winning mare Alizee (Sepoy).

This is one of the most progressive and current pedigrees in the Stud Book, with the likes of G3 Chairman’s S. winner Zulfiqar (Exceed And Excel) and talented filly Willinga Beast (Snitzel), runner-up in the G2 Percy Sykes S. and G2 Furious S. last year, providing recent updates.

I Am Invincible | Standing at Yarraman Park Stud

Marrakesh, who has a yearling colt by Street Boss (USA) and was most recently served by Darley shuttler Palace Pier (GB), has already produced a stakes winner in the shape of her first foal Mamounia (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}), and Godolphin have tasted plenty of success in recent years when sending mares to Yarraman Park’s Champion Sire I Am Invincible, most notably with G1 Coolmore Stud S. heroine In Secret.

Massira has also had the benefit of two Flemington jump-outs, with the first of those a second behind fellow Furphy Trophy rival Princess Duhallow (Shalaa {Ire}) and the second an impressive display of sustained speed.

Massira will jump from barrier two on Saturday, with last week’s Group 1-winning rider Blake Shinn booked to ride.

Murray Bridge, Race 4, 2.32pm AEDT (2.02pm local), Magic Millions SA 2YO Classic, $202,250, 1200m

Furlanetto, 2-year-old filly (Zoustar x Single Style {NZ} {Not A Single Doubt})

With the key G1 Golden Slipper lead-ups taking centre stage at Randwick, Saturday’s sole 2-year-old contest in South Australia may have crept under the radar, and although Lindsay Park’s two-time stakes placegetter Tacito (Showtime) holds strong favouritism, he may face stiff competition from the well-bred debutant Furlanetto.

Her trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy are no strangers to success with the progeny of Widden Stud flagbearer Zoustar, having trained his champion daughter and $4.2 million broodmare purchase Sunlight to win three Group 1s, and Furlanetto should be well-versed on racecourse debut having had three previous jump-outs.

Fluranetto as a yearling | Image courtesy of Magic Millions

A $350,000 purchase by Mark Player and Robert Roulston’s PR Funds from the Vinery Stud draft at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Furlanetto is out of the stakes-winning Not A Single Doubt mare Single Style (NZ), making her a half-sister to two stakes horses in Listed scorer Miss Hipstar (Star Turn) and talented filly Still Single (More Than Ready {USA}), who finished runner-up in the G2 Sweet Embrace S. as a juvenile.

Further back, this is the family of another three-time Group 1 winner in Flamberge (Exceed And Excel), and Furlanetto’s pedigree carries an added element of intrigue given that she’s inbred 3 X 3 to the late breed-shaping stallion Redoute’s Choice.

Furlanetto will be ridden by Todd Pannell on Saturday and will jump from barrier five.

Looking Back

Friday’s selections yielded little joy, with expensive yearling purchase Madam Roselyn (Not A Single Doubt) failing to beat a runner home in the 2-year-old race at Newcastle. We will have to wait another day to see unraced filly She Will Rock You, the daughter of Zoustar was scratched from the opening race at Aratat.
