Kooringal Stud, located in Wagga Wagga and set amongst over 2500 acres of prime Riverina country, was founded in 1910 by John and Christina Lamont and named after the indigenous word ‘Kooringal’ meaning ‘home on the hill’.

Finance Tycoon, the son of Champion sire Written Tycoon, stood his first season in 2022 at Glen Eden Stud in Victoria, where he served 49 mares at a fee of $13,200 (inc GST) and Angus Lamont is proud to discuss the move north.

Finance Tycoon stands this season at his new home, Kooringal Stud, at an accessible fee of $11,000 (inc GST).

Angus Lamont explained, “Finance Tycoon was retired quite quickly, and the ownership group were looking for a place they could have all their mares located too, Kooringal Stud has the facilities and that is why we were approached to stand the horse for this season.”

Quality horses at accessible prices

Lamont describes Kooringal as a stud that is “proud to offer breeders race record, conformation and pedigree at an accessible price.”

Kooringal Stud currently offers four stallions, with sirelines such as More Than Ready (USA), Snitzel, Frankel (GB) and War Front (USA) and are now proud to offer another son of a Champion Sire in Finance Tycoon, a son of Written Tycoon.

Finance Tycoon was a serious racehorse and many would say we never saw the best of him as he only raced 10 times.

Finance Tycoon, trained by Tom Daberning and Ben Hayes, provided plenty of thrills for his connections in a short career.

An impressive winner of the G3 Maribyrnong Plate over 1000 metres down the tough Flemington straight at only his second outing.

The G3 Maribyrnong Plate has had a record of producing elite colts that make their mark at stud, with the likes of Testa Rossa, Bel Esprit and in earlier years Biscay and the great Vain.

The victory thrust the juvenile into the spotlight for the upcoming features such as the R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

Proving his constitution, the colt was travelled to the Gold Coast to contest the Gold Nugget H. over 1100 metres and in winning, Finance Tycoon downed the colours of Shaquero (Shalaa {Ire}). However, the tables would be turned in the R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic with Shaquero saluting and Finance Tycoon finishing an admirable sixth after being ridden not to suit.

“Finance Tycoon always showed early speed and sustained that speed throughout his races.”

The colt would then return to Victoria, where he was only 2.7l away from Artorius (Flying Artie) in the G1 Blue Diamond S. and only 0.1l away from Godolphin’s Champion Anamoe (Street Boss {USA}) who finished third.

Fittingly, the announcement is timely given the The Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria Showdown is due be run on Saturday, a race in which Finance Tycoon won by 4.5l.

Finance Tycoon would train on to claim the G3 Zeditave S. as a 3-year-old, before being retired to Glen Eden Stud where he spent the 2022 season.

Angus Lamont

“He (Finance Tycoon) has a fantastic attitude and he’s a big lad that looks like he will continue to grow. Looking at him you probably wouldn’t have thought he would have been a 2-year-old,” Lamont says.

“Finance Tycoon should suit a variety of breeders, a lot of opportunity to be breeding to a horse that hails from a fantastic sire and from the same female line as champion sires Flying Spur and Encosta De Lago with some nice line breeding options to superior female lines, including the Try My Best line.”

“He’s a lovely horse though and we are excited to be standing him.”

Finance Tycoon is the best foal to race from the Darci Brahma (NZ) mare Darook Park and as and Lamont explained a big pedigree that includes the Group 1 winner Gypsy Diamond (Not A Single Doubt).

And of course, is a son of Written Tycoon who has sired 52 stakes winners to date and has young guns such as the proven Capitalist at Newgate Stud and Vinery Stud’s promising Ole Kirk at stud to fly the flag for the sireline.

“I think Finance Tycoon is the complete package and will appeal to a range of people.”

Lamont concludes it could be a big month of exciting news for Kooringal Stud.

“Hopefully there’s some more exciting news to come at the end of the week as we work towards finalising the roster.”
