Kitchwin Hills’ stud-master Mick Malone caught up with TDN AusNZ to touch on the exciting announcement that Dubious will stand the 2023 season at the Isis Valley property.

Dubious has been standing at Aquis Stud’s Canungra property since retirement until it was announced on Sunday the exciting son of Not A Single Doubt would transfer to Kitchwin Hills where he will be available to breeders at a fee of $15,400 (inc GST). Dubious stood last season, 2022, for $13,200 (inc GST).

Dubious, who will be represented by his first 2-year-old runners this spring, served 143 mares last season. In total, across his four seasons at stud, the 7-year-old has covered 417 mares.

A winner of the G3 Breeders’ Plate and G2 Champagne Classic, his progeny have been well received posting a top price of $500,000 for a colt from Thisisus (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}) when offered by Noralla Stud at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, he was bought by Justin Fung and trainer Annabel Neasham.

Overall, Dubious achieved a healthy average price of $74,168 across the sales to date.

Dubious appeals to Malone

In joining Kitchwin Hills, Dubious becomes the third stallion on its roster that includes the stakes-producer Sooboog and the exciting Graff.

Speaking to Malone, the enthusiasm for acquiring the services of Dubious is evident, “The team and everybody at Kitchwin Hills couldn’t be happier to have Dubious joining us. It is a real coup for the farm.”

Malone explained that Dubious was a son of one of the preeminent sirelines in Australia, that of the late Arrowfield star Not A Single Doubt, whose sire sons include the incredible Extreme Choice. Not A Single Doubt also has plenty of extra ammunition at stud such as the young bulls Anders, Farnan, and Doubtland.

Furthermore, Not A Single Doubt is a son and grandson of the all-conquering Redoute’s Choice and Danehill (USA).

“I have been a huge follower of Not A Single Doubt for the last 15 years, and even his mares, he is just a phenomenal horse and a real breed sharper in Australia.

“Extreme Choice, a great stallion, Farnan now, those horses are getting outstanding broodmares and plenty of support. So, I think Not A Single Doubt will be a stallion that people talk about for a long time.

But Malone also added that there are elements of stamina from his dam Suspicieuse (Fr) (Elusive City {USA}), who was a winner over 2000 metres.

She also comes from a page that includes Sediciosa (Ire) (Rail Link {GB}); she was a winner from 2000 metres to 2400 metres, including the G3 Prix de Royaumont at Chantilly. At stud Sediciosa has produced San Huberto (Ire) (Speightstown {USA}), who won up to 3000 metres, among his victories the G2 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier and the Listed Bagot H. in Australia.

“Dubious has a pedigree that should see him produce horses with stamina, and his mother was a 2000-metre horse.

“And I love the influence of Elusive Quality; for me, that’s another big tick for Dubious.”

Kitchwin Hills believes in Dubious at stud

Kitchwin Hills confirmed that Dubious would stand his first year at the farm for a fee of $15,400 (inc GST).

“When we stand a horse, we want to confidently send our mares to them. That’s why it is so vital for us to believe in the stallion, and that’s why when we promote them to our clients, we also want to show we are backing them.

“We have used that formula for all the horses we have stood, and it won’t change for Dubious. We are very selective,” Malone added.

“We have marked several of our good quality mares that Dubious will likely serve, but nothing has been locked down yet; it is ever-evolving. I bought three of Dubious' progeny at the sales, and they are in training with some of the best trainers in Australia, and I was honestly blown away by the type he is producing, so I think he will be that type of horse that you can send a range of mares too.”
