Randwick Trials hosted eight juvenile events on Tuesday morning and, not for the first time, Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott dominated the action, whilst last year's Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale-topper made a pleasing debut for Chris Waller.

Juvenile trial summary

Four trial winners for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott were headed by an Exceed And Excel filly, related to the stable's former champion Pierro, who won her trial debut (Heat 10) under a hard hold.

A brother to Sunlight (Zoustar), last year's Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale-topper (named Kandinsky Abstract) made a pleasing trial debut to finish fourth in Heat 12 for Chris Waller.

R. Listed Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic winner Sovereign Fund (Capitalist) returned from a break to take Heat 3 for Peter and Paul Snowden, one of two winners in the Newgate colours.

Michael Freedman sent out two juvenile trial winners, with his Extreme Choice colt Perigean winning Heat 13.

Newgate keep kicking

The red jacket and yellow stars of China Horse Club with Newgate and co. were to the fore in two of the morning’s trials at Randwick, which began with a return to action for their R. Listed Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic winner Sovereign Fund (Capitalist).

Sent for a break after an out-of-form last-place finish in January’s Gold Coast R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic, the colt was back to the fore in Heat 3 for Peter and Paul Snowden and beat Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s filly Frenemy (Written Tycoon) - who has yet to make a race start - by 0.76l.

The red and yellow colours were back in front shortly afterwards in Heat 6 when their Spirit Of Boom colt Hyde Park won his second of this preparation, having finished second to Frenemy earlier this month.

Trained by Waterhouse and Bott, Hyde Park took in a trio of pre-Christmas trials but has not yet made his racecourse debut. Forced three wide and into mid-division by a hotly contested early pace, he was set to his work by Tim Clark in the home straight and covered the final 600 metres in 35.48s, the slowest such time of the four 1050-metre heats on Tuesday.

Out of the four-time winner Iamhere (I Am Invincible), Hyde Park was a $260,000 purchased by China Horse Club, Newgate Bloodstock and Trilogy Racing at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

After two trial winners came home for their ownership group, Newgate had more to celebrate throughout the morning at Randwick on the sire front. By their standout sire Extreme Choice, Michael Freedman’s colt Perigean took out Heat 13 for his first trial victory in four attempts.

Running in the familiar colours of the trainer’s G1 Golden Slipper S. winner Stay Inside (and by the same sire), he’s out of Universal Moon (Universal Ruler), a six-time winner, and was a hefty $600,000 at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale when signed for by Mick Wallace and the Freedman Brothers.

It was a juvenile trial double for Michael Freedman, having earlier sent out Trapeze Artist colt Ducasse, who responded to a strong drive from Keagan Latham to take Heat 4.

Another Newgate sire was in lights in Heat 12, when Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s Capitalist colt Stand Aside made his second trial appearance a winning one and, at 33.14s, he clocked the fastest last 600 metres of any juvenile on Tuesday morning.

Running in the colours of Go Bloodstock, he is the first foal from the unraced Redoute’s Choice mare Janast and was sold to his trainers and Kestrel Thoroughbreds at the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $250,000.

His sale price, however, is eclipsed by the fourth-placed finisher Kandinsky Abstract. By Zoustar, he’s a full sibling to Champion 3-Year-Old Sunlight and made the headlines when topping last year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale at $3 million.

Trained by Chris Waller for a Coolmore-led syndicate in the colours of Westerberg, he jumped slowly but made up ground pleasingly in the home straight when asked by James McDonald, in what was his first public appearance.

Waterhouse/Bott quartet headed by two smart fillies

Leading home a trifecta for the stable, Stand Aside was the last of four winners for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott on Tuesday.

Following Hyde Park, in Heat 10 they sent out their debutante filly Power Ballard (Exceed And Excel) to record an all-the-way win. Hard held by Nash Rawiller, she took in the last 600 metres in a smart 33.3s.

Bred and retained by Phoenix Thoroughbreds, she is out of the unraced Lonhro mare Right Cord, herself a $1.05 million purchase by James Harron Bloodstock at the 2020 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

Right Cord is out of Miss Right Note (Ire) (Daylami {Ire}) - better known as the dam of the great Lonhro.

The following heat also went to a Tulloch Lodge resident as Tycoon Deshauna (Written Tycoon) went for pillar to post in solid fashion. Another filly making her debut appearance, she led home Mark Newnham’s Tropical Breeze (Denman) by 1.34l, with a good gap back to the rest of the field.

Picked up by her trainers and Kestrel Thoroughbreds at last year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $320,000, Tycoon Deshauna is out of the juvenile winner Supersay (Rothesay), a half-sister to G1 VRC Oaks winner Lasqueti Spirit (Beneteau).
