Looking Ahead - April 20

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Thursday at Pakenham, we look at a filly at Wyong who’s a half-sister to the stakes winner Caipirinha (Nicconi). At Pinjarra, we have a gelding who has no less than three stakes-winning half-siblings.

Wyong, Race 5, 2.55pm AEST, TAB.com.au Mdn, $40,000, 1100m

Chilada, 3-year-old filly (Pride Of Dubai x Prostar {Starcraft {NZ}})

This unraced filly is a half-sister to the smart Western Australian filly Caipirinha, whose record includes three Listed wins in the west and a fourth in the G2 Karrakatta Plate. She was also twice third at Group 3 level. Further along this page is the dual Group 3 winner Collate (Catbird) and the well-performed Burrito (Marscay), a Group 2 and Listed winner.

Chilada was bred by Robrick Lodge Thoroughbreds in Parkville, New South Wales, and she is owned and raced by that outfit, of Eremein (Timber Country {USA}) fame.

Pride Of Dubai | Standing at Coolmore

The filly is trained by Tracey Bartley at Wyong and she’s been trialling since August last year. In her latest efforts, she’s been twice a winner up to 1000 metres, making this debut a promising one. She has jockey Jason Collett from barrier five.

Pinjarra, Race 4, 5.05pm AEST (3.05pm local), G Force Printing Mdn, $22,500, 1200m

First Encounter, 3-year-old gelding (Dundeel {NZ} x Star Encounter {Jeune {GB}})

This gelding has a striking pedigree as a half-brother to no less than three stakes winners. The first of them is the Statue Of Liberty (USA) gelding Star Exhibit, who was twice a winner of the G2 Perth Cup and then the G2 Lee Steere S., along with three Listed races. Next are the siblings Perfect Jewel and Royal Star, both by Redoute’s Choice. The former won five Group races in Western Australia, while the latter won the Listed Natasha S.

First Encounter was bred by Bob Peters from his former mare Star Encounter. The gelding was not offered for sale as a yearling and is raced by Peters.

Dundeel (NZ) | Standing at Arrowfield Stud

He is trained at Karnup by Adam Durrant and has been in a number of trials. In the latest on April 3, he was third over 950 metres with William Pike, going down by just 0.63l. In this debut he will again have Pike from barrier 13.

Looking Back

Our Looking Ahead selections on Wednesday were absolutely luckless. At Warwick Farm, both Cape Size (The Autumn Sun) and Bolero Belle (I Am Invincible) were unplaced. At Ascot, Transcendant (Impending) was also unplaced.
