Yulong secures Pierata for 2023, just months before his first runners

4 min read
Yulong Stud has announced that they will stand Pierata for the 2023 breeding season, as the son of Pierro relocates from Queensland’s Aquis Farm to their Victorian base.

In quite the coup for Yulong, they have secured Pierata only months away from his first potential runners making their racecourse debuts later this year.

Whilst Yulong have yet to announce a 2023 fee for Pierata, he covered a total of 451 mares in his three years with Aquis, all at a fee of $44,000 (inc GST).

Yulong’s Chief Operating Officer Sam Fairgray said he’s highly anticipating a big season from his first crop, not least after they made a great impression at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in January, where his progeny averaged 5.6 times his initial service fee at $247,500.

Pierata | Standing at Yulong

“He’s a stunning individual himself and we have seen him produce beautiful types in a similar mold that have been picked up by all the top trainers,” said Fairgray.

His best result at that sale was the first foal from Loving Gaby, a dual Group 1 winner. A filly, she sold to the mare’s former trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace for $800,000. Other standout results came by way of a colt picked up by Guy Mulcaster for $650,000 and another by Justin Bahen for $550,000.

Unusually consistent

Trained by Greg Hickman, Pierata was a metropolitan winner as a 2-year-old, placing in the G2 Sires’ Produce S. After adding a Group 3 to his CV shortly after resuming as a 3-year-old, he went on to finish second in the G1 Randwick Guineas.

However, he really came of age as a 4-year-old when, two starts after narrowly missing out in the G1 The Galaxy H. to the Champion sprinter Nature Strip (Nicconi), he won the G1 All-Aged S.

The G1 All Aged S. has a history of producing stallions in recent editions such as the Widden Stud-based Trapeze Artist and All Too Hard who stands at Vinery Stud, while the Group 1-producing sire Tivaci who stands at Waikato Stud was also a winner of the Randwick feature. Earlier on the honour roll you can find breed defining names such as Flying Spur and for the pedigree enthusiast's Yattendon.

Returning as a 5-year-old, he continued valiantly at the top level, and was denied back-to-back All-Aged S. only by Tofane (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}) in the same season that he beat Trekking (Street Cry {Ire}) in the $1 million Redzel S.

In a sensational demonstration of his incredible speed, Pierata won the G3 Sydney S. in a quicker time than Redzel’s (Snitzel) $10 million The Everest victory over the same distance, the next race on the card that day.

Pierata mixed it with some of the world’s highest-rated sprinters of recent years and the best of his generation throughout his career, including The Everest winner's Redzel and Classique Legend (Not A Single Doubt), the multiple Group 1-winning sprinters Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega {Ire}), Trapeze Artist and Bivouac, and the star colts' Brutal and Exceedance.

Overall, Pierata raced 26 times for nine victories, a remarkable career which Fairgray marked as unusually consistent, especially for a stallion prospect.

“Pierata finished outside the top five just twice in his career,” Fairgray said.

“Few stallions these days have such complete racing campaigns as Pierata, and throughout his career he showed his incredible soundness, brilliance and raw talent - all qualities that put him on track for success as a stallion.

“To acquire him at this point in his career, just months away from his first runners, is incredibly exciting for both Yulong and the Victorian industry. We’ve seen how well-received his first yearlings were at the sales this year, and the early reports from trainers are full of promise.”

Standing first in the Hunter Valley for his debut season, Pierata covered 169 mares before moving to Queensland where he covered 143 and 139 in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

“From a practical level, the investment made into his second- and third-year mares means the momentum will keep going over the next couple of years, and we’re looking forward to planning matings for Pierata to some of our elite broodmares at Yulong,” Fairgray added.

Champion Sire I Am Invincible to stand for $302,500

6 min read
Yarraman Park has released its fees for the 2023 breeding season. All three stallions have received fee increases, with ‘Vinnie’ to stand at a career-high figure.

Following another phenomenal season, both on and off the track, Australia’s leadingstallion, I Am Invincible, will stand at Yarraman Park at a fee of $302,500 (inc GST) in 2023.

The figure is the same that the great Encosta De Lago stood for at Coolmore in 2008. In that same year (as well as 2007), Arrowfield Stud resident, the legendary Redoute’s Choice, commanded a fee of $330,000 (inc GST).

I Am Invincible’s numbers are quite extraordinary.

He boasts 92 individual stakes winners and 14 Group 1 winners.

I Am Invincible will stand for an increased fee of $302,500 (inc GST) in 2023 | Standing at Yarraman Park Stud

‘Vinnie’ won his maiden Australian Sires’ Premiership in 2021/22, with his progeny amassing earnings just shy of $20 million and more than $500,000 ahead of his nearest rival. During that season, he had 185 individual winners and they combined for 314 wins, while 17 individual stakes winners tallied 25 stakes wins.

Yarraman Park director, Harry Mitchell, believes I Am Invincible has done enough to be mentioned in the same conversation as Australia’s all-time great sires.

“Yeah, I think he does. He’s a phenomenal stallion and he gets phenomenal-looking stock,” Mitchell told TDN AusNZ.

“I think he will go down in history as one of the great stallions. He’s been in the top two or three in Australia for a number of years, including last year, where he was Champion Sire, and he’s a good chance to repeat that this year.”

“I think he (I Am Invincible) will go down in history as one of the great stallions. He’s been in the top two or three in Australia for a number of years, including last year, where he was Champion Sire, and he’s a good chance to repeat that this year.” - Harry Mitchell

At the yearlings sales this year, I Am Invincible has had 91 yearlings sell for an extraordinary aggregate of $62,090,000 and an average of $682,307.

Remarkably, the stallion has had 17 yearlings make at least $1 million in 2023, with his top-seller being the colt offered by Segenhoe Stud from Anaheed (Fastnet Rock), who was purchased by Tom Magnier for $2.7 million at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, an auction where he finished with an average of $736,136.

Mitchell said he and the team at Yarraman Park thought long and hard regarding I Am Invincible’s fee, before settling on the figure of $302,500.

Harry Mitchell

He added that the stallion isn’t getting any younger - he’s 18 - and they are mindful of not overtaxing him. Last year, he covered 178 mares, after serving 193 mares in each of 2021 and 2020.

“There was talk of him going higher; we just think that’s a fair price. A lot of people said we should have gone to $300,000 (plus GST), but we reckon $275,000 plus GST is about right,” Mitchell explained.

“People with very good mares are going to support him and that’s how it should be.

“He’s an older horse now, so we’re looking to reduce his book a bit; it means we can pick and choose a bit.

“He’s (I Am Invincible) an older horse now, so we’re looking to reduce his book a bit; it means we can pick and choose a bit.” - Harry Mitchell

“We’re very comfortable with our own mares and what we have got booked for him, and it wouldn’t worry us if we didn’t get any more, but there are a few spots available.

“Given his sales results this year, his fee is pretty fair. He’s topped the averages at every sale by a mile.”

Son of a gun a star on the rise

I Am Invincible’s Group 1-winning son, Hellbent, seems to be following in the footsteps of his old man.

Fourth in last season’s First Season Sires’ title, he currently sits second in the Second Season Sires’ race, with 38 winners and prizemoney just north of $4 million.

Hellbent will stand for an increased fee of $38,500 (inc GST) in 2023 | Standing at Yarraman Park Stud

Hellbent has two stakes winners - Magic Time and Kristilli - as well as the exciting Benedetta - winner of four of her six starts.

His fee rises to $38,500 (inc GST), up from $22,000 (inc GST).

“We’re rapt with him, it’s really exciting, he’s got a number of horses that look to have the ability to reach the top level. Horses like Magic Time, Benedetta and Kristilli are all talented and it shows that he’s on the right road,” said Mitchell.

“We’re very fond of that horse. We bought 50 per cent of him before he’d won a stakes race and we’re very excited about him.

“He’s a great type-getter, they’re so athletic, his horses. We have some weanlings on the farm and they are as good as the Vinnies (progeny of I Am Invincible), he can just throw the most cracking types. We’re so proud of him and I think he is going to be a major influence in the years to come.”

Ready to support the new recruit

Earlier this month, Yarraman Park announced the acquisition of promising stallion Brave Smash (Jpn) from Aquis Farm.

He will stand his first season at Yarraman Park at a fee of $33,000 (inc GST).

Brave Smash, who possesses some serious Japan bloodlines - being a son of Tosen Phantom (Jpn), a Group 1-winning son of the multiple Group 1 hero Neo Universe (Jpn), in turn a son of the highly influential Sunday Silence (USA) - has created a big early impression.

He sits third in the First Season Sires’ Premiership and has five individual winners. Among them is Brave Mead, who was victorious in the Listed Valley Pearl S. (formerly the St Albans S.), and classy Western Australian colt Brave Halo a three-time winner who had little luck contesting the Blue Diamond series.

“We think he’s perfect for us, we like him very much,” Mitchell remarked.

“He’s done incredibly well from limited stock out there. They all seem to have good ability and good temperaments.

“To have three very high-class 2-year-olds already… we’re very excited about him, he’s our type of horse. He’s a lovely, strong, masculine horse with a great hindleg on him; he’s just a lovely horse.”

Saturday preview: Six things to keep an eye on

9 min read
A relatively quiet weekend after weeks of great Group 1 action but there is still plenty of racing interest around the country with stakes races at Hawkesbury, Doomben, Ascot, Morphettville and Mornington - and in New Zealand at Riccarton and Pukekohe Park.

G3 Hawkesbury Crown - valuable black-type for the mares

Run for the first time in 2010, this Group 3 contest at Hawkesbury for the girls has already proven itself to be a good form race - won by a number of mares who have gone onto further stakes success - such as Solicit (Street Cry {Ire}), Irithea (Snitzel), Pecans (Skilled), Kanzan (Commands) and the dual Group 1 winner Shillelagh (NZ) (Savabeel).

Eight of this year's 14 runners (noting that there are also four emergencies) are already stakes winners including the talented Written Tycoon duo Tycoon Evie and Written Beauty. Both are Group 3 winners - the former resuming off good trial form whilst the latter has been in the thick of things at her last two.

Princess Grace (USA), the current favourite for the G3 Hawkesbury Crown | Image courtesy of China Horse Club

Dual Group winner Expat (NZ) (Makfi {GB}) is also racing well whilst the Listed winner More Prophets (Smart Missile) has drawn yet another wide gate, she is certainly due a change of luck!

Two horses who are yet to secure a win at this oh so valuable stakes level look big chances, the imported Princess Grace (USA) (Karakontie {Jpn}) who ran so well at her local debut and Never Talk (No Nay Never {USA}) who finished in front of her when runner-up in the G2 Sapphire S.

G3 Hawkesbury Guineas - Chautauqua's first stakes win

Another relatively young race - first run in 2000 - this 3-year-old contest has also been won by horses who have been able to go onto further black-type success; such as Free Wheeling (Ad Valorem {USA}), Neeson (Mossman), Spill The Beans, Sambro (Fastnet Rock), Military Zone (Epaulette), Dawn Passage (Dawn Approach {Ire}), Najoom (Northern Meteor), Royal Discretion (Royal Academy {USA}) and Hire (Canny Lad).

And two who went onto Group 1 glory - the Coolmore Classic winner Alverta (Flying Spur) and a rather handy grey by the name of Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) whose success in this race in 2014 was his first in stakes company.

Maybe no Chautauquas line up this year, but it is a nice lineup, nevertheless.

Razeta, the current favourite for the G3 Hawkesbury Guineas | Image courtesy of The Image Is Everything

The Fortune Teller (Caravaggio {USA}) has a tricky gate to contend with but comes off a game win in the G3 Carbine Club S. Atmosphere (Lonhro) has also drawn out, but the consistent 3-year-old should be peaking off two very good runs this time in.

He does have to turn the tables on the smart filly Razeta (Deep Field) who was an easy winner of the Listed South Pacific Classic - her third win from nine starts. Kote (Choisir) brings Aft Cabin (Astern) form to the party whilst the up-and-comer of the field may be the Waterhouse/Bott-trained Hawaii Five Oh (I Am Invincible) - daughter of the G1 Coolmore Classic winner Aloha (Encosta De Lago).

G3 RN Irwin S. - quality sprinters

First run in 1955 this sprinting feature at Morphettville has a good record of being won by quality horses - 14 times won by horses who were already Group 1 winners, nine times won by horses who went onto win Group 1 races and three times by previous and subsequent big-race winners.

No elite-level winners line up in this year's edition though nine of the 13 are stakes winners and many of those are racing very well.

Such as Kallos (Medaglia D'Oro {USA}) who has returned from a gelding operation in flying form, following a first-up win down the Flemington straight with a Listed Bob Hoysted H. success at that same track.

Kallos, the current favourite for the G3 RN Irwin S. at Morphettville | Image courtesy of The Image Is Everything

In The Boat (Nostradamus) is bursting to win another having gone so close at his two runs this campaign whilst Shamino (Shamus Award) has been freshened after taking on the big guns in the G1 Oakleigh Plate. He is a horse who really knows how to find the line as his record of 11 wins from 47 starts shows.

A couple of Brazen Beau's sons are in with a chance - General Beau resuming off good trial form whilst Larimer Street is up in class but racing in great heart. I Am Bene (I Am Invincible) can pull out a run fresh and from a good gate Seradess (Astern) looks primed to run another bold race.

Adelaide's 3-year-olds - the HC Nitschke S. & Redelva S.

Sprinting 3-year-olds are well catered for at Morphettville on Saturday with the running of the Listed HC Nitschke S. over 1400 metres and the Listed Redelva S. over 1100 metres.

Favourite in the HC Nitschke S., the sixth race on the card, is Royal Merchant (Merchant Navy) who is certainly deserving of a win having been in the placings at her last couple - and in the first five at each of her nine outings.

She takes on five last start winners here - the up-and-comers consistent of Caste (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) and the consistent Prairie Flower (Star Turn) and the impressive debut winner Boognish (Sooboog).

Named after one of South Australia's finest and most popular sprinters, the Redelva S. is also a race with plenty of current form.

Renosu (Exceed And Excel) made the pace and tried hard behind the exciting What You Need (Supido) in Listed company at Flemington last time out whilst Doull (Snitzel) was close up in stakes company racing against the older horses at Moonee Valley.

Renosu, the current favourite for the Listed Redelva S. at Morphettville | Image courtesy of Ashlea Brennan

A few of the first uppers here have shown plenty of talent - such as the G2 Reisling S. winner Seven Veils (Shalaa {Ire}), the Listed Talindert S. winner I'mlovin'ya (Capitalist) and the lightly raced Redzoust (Zoustar).

The Cups - Hawkesbury & Mornington

There is Country Cup action in two states on Saturday - in New South Wales the $200,000 G3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup and in Victoria the $300,000 Listed Mornington Cup which provides a G1 Caulfield Cup ticket to its winner.

Favourite after a few early scratchings at Hawkesbury is one of the six Northern Hemisphere gallopers to contest the race - the 7-year-old Floating Artist (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) who is only second-up off a long spell. He really caught the eye charging home when resuming at Bendigo... his previous run being a G1 Melbourne Cup fourth behind Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}).

Floating Artist (GB), the current favourite for the G3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup | Image courtesy of The Image Is Everything

Fellow import Hopeful (Fr) (Motivator {GB}) resumes off good trial form and of the three New Zealand-bred contestants, Lord Ardmore (NZ) (Reliable {Man}) looks nicely primed third-up, enjoying the services of the in-form Joao Moreira. Leading the Australian-bred charge is the tough chestnut Just Folk (Magnus).

It is not often we see a G1 Melbourne Cup winner line up at Mornington but topweight Vow And Declare (Declaration Of War {USA}) has been avoiding Sydney's wet weather as he heads toward the Brisbane winter.

He has been racing well though on two occasions hasn't been able to match Right You Are (So You Think {NZ}) who won five in a row prior to a slight set-back and a game second to this year's Melbourne Cup favourite White Marlin (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) in the G3 Easter Cup.

Hezashocka (NZ), the current favourite for the Listed Mornington Cup | Image courtesy of Racing Photos

Nonconformist (Rebel Raider) is nicely placed down in class having contested the G1 Australian Cup whilst Gear Up (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Hezashocka (NZ) (Shocking) both contested the G1 Queen Elizabeth S. so impressively won by Dubai Honour (Ire) (Pride Of Dubai).

First-season sire Action

The Oaks Stud's triple Group 1-winning sprinter U S Navy Flag (USA) is the busiest of the first-season stallions represented in metropolitan races on Saturday - four of his sons and daughters hitting the track with three of those contesting the Listed Champagne S. at Pukekohe Park.

To Catch A Thief looks hard to beat on the back of his fast-finishing G1 Manawatu Sires' Produce S. third, a race in which Chantilly Lace (NZ) was also picking up nicely late. Hot Chilli Mama (NZ) meanwhile is up in class but also displays potential.

U S Navy Flag (USA) will be represented by four runners across Australasia on Saturday | Standing at The Oaks Stud

As does Penvose Lad who will be strongly fancied having been a game runner-up at debut... he contests the fifth race at Riccarton. Fellow first-season stallion - Arrowfield Stud's Showtime - also has a runner in that race, Motiontime still green; but promising.

Also in the Champagne is the debutant Just One (NZ), a NZ$220,000 New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka graduate by Coolmore Stud's Justify (USA) out of the wonderful producer Danex (NZ) (Danasinga) - dam of the stakes winners Oceanex (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}), Miss Aotearoa (NZ) (Per Incanto {USA}) and Amexed (NZ) (Pentire {GB}). Cambridge Stud's Embellish (NZ) and Waikato Stud's Ardrossan also have runners - Tahitinui (NZ) and Loch Katrine (NZ) who did not have a great deal of luck when third last time out.

Justify also has a runner in the opening event at Hawkesbury - Californian who has run very nicely at his first two starts.

Justify (USA) | Standing at Coolmore America

The first race at Doomben is busier in regard to first-season sire action with five young horses represented - Aquis Farm's Lean Mean Machine by last spring's Doomben winner Freeman, Yarraman's Brave Smash (Jpn) by the recent Kembla Grange trial winner Brave Agenda, Eureka's Encryption by Keyboard, Aquis' Performer by Para Park Chance and the former Spendthrift shuttler Bolt D'Oro (USA) by the in-form Minto's D'Oro.

Performer also has a runner in the third race at Ascot the debutant Ima Wild Girl. Also having their first starts in that race are Martos Cob by Rivercrest Park's Ducimus and Bondi Plunge by Lynward Park's Bondi.

Anamoe: Farewell to a Champion

4 min read
On Friday morning Godolphin announced their star 4-year-old entire Anamoe will not be travelling to compete at Royal Ascot and would be retired to the Kelvinside property of Darley Australia in New South Wales, where he will stand for an introductory fee of $121,000 (inc GST).

Cover image courtesy of The Image Is Everything

The curtain has officially fallen on the career of the extraordinary Anamoe. The son of Street Boss (USA) has been retired. He leaves the racetrack as a nine-time Group 1 winner with 14 victories overall. Incredibly, Anamoe also retires as the most prolific Group 1 winner globally to carry the royal blue of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The James Cummings-trained Anamoe’s swansong took place in the G1 Queen Elizabeth S. at Royal Randwick earlier in April, in which the William Haggas-trained Dubai Honour (Ire) (Pride Of Dubai) caused an upset with a runaway victory and the hugely talented Mo’unga (NZ) (Savabeel) edged out an admirable Anamoe for second place.

Despite running third in the Queen Elizabeth, connections did not announce immediately that Anamoe would be retired, the prospect remained the superstar could still be campaigned in Europe, predominantly the United Kingdom for the either the G1 Sussex S. at Goodwood, or the G1 Queen Anne S. at the famous Royal Ascot meeting.

Although his legion of fans and those closest to the great horse would have hoped for the fairytale to end Anamoe's career, it was not to be. However, the entire was a rarity, a precocious, high-class juvenile, who trained on to be Australia’s dominant weight-for-age galloper.

No mountains left to climb

Near peerless on the track, Anamoe faced and beat the best of his generation, such as Home Affairs, Stay Inside, Artorius (Flying Artie), Hitotsu (Maurice {Jpn}), In The Congo and the star older gallopers like Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}), Zaaki (GB) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}) and Alligator Blood (All Too Hard).

Godolphin’s Head Trainer James Cummings who oversaw Anamoe’s outstanding career commented on Friday morning, “Our team is proud of all he has achieved during his racing career. He has never let us down and has been there for us at every start.

“We wish Anamoe all the best in his retirement and we can’t wait to see his progeny come through the stable in the years to come,” Cummings told Racing.Com.

“It has been an immense honour and privilege for our team to care for Anamoe and guide him through his racing career. Anamoe’s health has always been our number one priority and we take great pride in retiring him in such excellent condition.”

“It has been an immense honour and privilege for our team to care for Anamoe and guide him through his racing career. Anamoe’s health has always been our number one priority and we take great pride in retiring him in such excellent condition.” - James Cummings

Cummings together with regular partner James McDonald guided Anamoe to many memorable moments on the track such as a runaway victory in the G1 Sires’ Produce S., an authoritative victory in the G1 Caulfield Guineas and the icing on the cake a rousing victory in the G1 W.S Cox Plate at the iconic Moonee Valley which was then drenched in blue confetti after the Champion’s win.

The trifecta of perfomance

Vin Cox, Managing Director of Godolphin Australia declared Anamoe’s retirement as “bittersweet.”

“As an iconic figure for Godolphin and the world of horseracing, Anamoe leaves a legacy that will not be forgotten, and he has nothing left to prove.

“As an iconic figure for Godolphin and the world of horseracing, Anamoe leaves a legacy that will not be forgotten, and he has nothing left to prove.” - Vin Cox

“The trifecta of performance, pedigree and attitude are the most critical factors breeders consider and he possesses them all in spade. As Anamoe embarks on his new journey on the prestigious Darley roster, there’s no doubt that he is the most sought-after and exceptional stallion Australia has ever seen.”

Anamoe will take up residence at Darley's Kelvinside base where he will stand alongside the likes of Exceed And Excel and his outstanding son Bivouac, the exciting shuttler Harry Angel (Ire) and class European gallopers like Palace Pier (GB).

Warwick Farm Trials: Baker's Joey impresses

6 min read
There were six heats for juveniles at Warwick Farm trials on Friday morning, local trainers mostly dominated proceedings with Bjorn Baker and Gary Portelli providing winners for five of the six heats.

Heat 8 - Zazel scores in fine style

The first heat for juveniles was restricted to the 2-year-old fillies over 810 metres. The trial was claimed by Zazel. Prepared by Warwick Farm conditioner Gary Portelli. The daughter of Rubick was having the second trial of her career, Zazel improved from a placed debut at Kembla Grange to score Heat 8 by 0.88l from the Bjorn Baker-trained Time Bandit (Star Turn), while 3.33l away in third was Tutta La Vita (The Autumn Sun) from the Chris Waller camp.

Zazel showed good gate speed to control proceedings and in the run to the line had enough in the tank to hold Time Bandit. Zazel ran her final 600 metres in 34.50s.

The filly is the fourth foal from the Commands mare Absolutely Flying. She is the dam of three winners including Lipizzan (Sebring) who was placed in the Listed Woodland S.

Zazel’s second dam is the Real Quiet (USA) mare Really Flying, a four-time winner including the Listed Dark Jewel Classic at Scone. Really Flying produced Camporella (Exceed And Excel) at stud, a flying 2-year-old who was victorious in the G3 Sires’ Produce S., the R. Listed Magic Millions Perth 2YO Classic and the Listed Gimcrack S.

Zazel was retained to race by her breeders Laurel Oak Bloodstock.

Heat 9 - Waller lone non-local to claim juvenile heat

Champion Rosehill Gardens-based trainer Chris Waller was the lone non-local trainer to claim a juvenile trial.

Waller combined with the Champion visiting jockey Joao Moreira to win Heat 9 over 810 metres with Makena (Zoustar).

The daughter of Widden Stud’s Champion sire Zoustar, narrowly denied the Maher/Eustace-trained Who Invited Her (Spirit Of Boom) and Nothin’Seemstofit (NZ) (Deep Field) from the Bjorn Baker camp was 0.95l away in third. The field clocking in 34.43s for their final 600 metres.

Makena was unplaced on her debut behind Veecee (Capitalist) down the Flemington straight but looks to have returned in good style.

The filly is the third foal from the Street Cry (Ire) mare Quayside. She was a four-time winner including the Listed Penang Trophy and was fourth in the G1 Schweppes Oaks.

Makena’s third dam is the Marauding (NZ) mare Pontal Lass. A star racemare who won the G1 Flight S. She was placed in several Group 1 contests such as the G1 VRC Oaks.

Heat 10 was the final trial restricted to the juvenile fillies over 810 metres and was taken out by the Bjorn Baker Casebolt (Flying Artie) in a tenacious display.

The unraced daughter of Flying Artie had two previous underwhelming trials but bounced out of the ground to claim Friday’s event from the Brad Widdup-trained Hasty Honey (Epaulette) trying hard to run into second, following in third was Up To Mischief (Written Tycoon) from the Maher/Eustace camp. Casebolt posted 33.94s for her final 600 metres.

Debello is the first foal from the Snitzel mare Age Of War. She was a winner once, however, hails from a substantial black-type pedigree. Included on the pages are the likes of the late Time For War, a winner of the G2 Pago Pago S. and the G2 Sires’ Produce S.

Winning by 2.73l from Ioane (NZ) (Savabeel) from the Annabel Neasham stable, while the Matthew Smith-trained Release The Spirit (Divine Prophet) was third. The field clocked a final 600 metres of 34.63s.

Racing Victoria stewards suspend Nugent for 37 meetings

Teo Nugent has been suspended for 37 meetings by Racing Victoria stewards at the conclusion of an inquiry into the fall during the running of the Listed Abell S. at Moonee Valley in March. The fall landed Nugent in the hospital with a serious injury - a C1 fracture. Nugent’s mount Florescent Star (Zoustar) was humanely euthanized by Racing Victoria Vets.

Stewards concluded that Nugent was responsible for the fall, issuing a report that read: “Mr Nugent was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under the provision of AR131 (a), the careless riding being that approaching and passing the 300-metre mark Mr Nugent directed his mount (Florescent Star) out from behind Doull (Daniel Stackhouse) to obtain a position one off the rail behind In The Boat (Blaike McDougall), a position which was dangerously close to the heels of In The Boat. As a result, Florescent Star clipped the heels of In The Boat and fell.”

Looking Ahead - April 22

4 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

While the big autumn racing carnivals are cooling down in Sydney and Melbourne, there are still plenty of untapped and unraced potential futures stars to be unveiled. On Saturday across Australasia the spotlight will be put on three promising debutants.

Mornington, Race 1, 12.15pm AEST, Mornington Peninsula News Group Sires, $150,000, 1200m

Rovno Amber, 2-year-old colt (Russian Revolution x Precious Gem {Econsul {NZ}})

Mornington-based trainer Shane Nichols will debut a son of Russian Revolution at his home track on Saturday afternoon.

Rovno Amber is the third and final from the late Econsul (NZ) mare Precious Gem. She was a Group 1 victress, claiming the 2016 edition of the G1 Robert Sangster S., overall Precious Gem was an eight-time winner also counting the Listed Anniversary Vase alongside her Group 1 victory.

At stud Precious Gem is the dam of Vancity Gem (Vancouver) who was a dual winner.

Furthermore, this is the family of the stakes-producing stallions Fast ‘N’ Famous and Turffontein.

Both stallions were capable on the track with Fast ‘N’ Famous claiming the G3 Gilgai S. and placing in the G1 The Galaxy, while Turffontein was a dual Group 1 winner of the William Reid S. and Sir Rupert Clarke S.

Rovno Amber was bred by China Horse Club Racing and offered by Sledmere Stud at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale where he was purchased by his trainer for $250,000.

She is a half-sister to the triple Group 3-winner Judged (High Yield {USA}).

This is also the family of Lawyer, who was a winner of the G2 Royal Sovereign S. and G3 Norman Robinson S. in addition to being placed in three Group 1 contests.

Yukan Rose was a $160,000 yearling purchase by David Pfieffer Racing and Koolman Bloodstock from the draft of Noorilim Park at the 2022 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.
