Doomben: G1 Doomben 10,000, $1,500,000, 1200m
It was a second Group 1 victory for this outstanding 3-year-old who did a good job coming back from the 1400 metres of the G1 All Aged S.A homebred for Jonathan Munz, Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) is one of the two stakes winners for his G3 Up And Coming S.-winning sire who left Australian shores in 2019, putting a couple of stamps on his passport since!
Giga Kick is the 10th foal produced by the imported mare Rekindled Applause (GB) (Royal Applause {GB}), a four times winner who was four-times stakes placed in Italy.
In 2021 producing a colt by Pariah, Rekindled Applause has been nicely represented by six winners with Rekindled Power and Shuffle Up (both by Scissor Kick's sire Redoute's Choice) also earning black type with Group placings.
And she is the grandam of a classy galloper, her lightly raced daughter Lago Ovation (Encosta De Lago) producing Yulong's G1 CF Orr S. winner Alabama Express (also by Redoute's Choice).
It seems no accident that members of this family have been regular visitors to Redoute's Choice and his sons with Rekindled Applause's fourth dam being a half-sister to Redoute's Choice's influential fourth dam Best In Show (USA) (Traffic Judge {USA}).
Plus her sire Royal Applause (GB) is a grandson of Try My Best (USA), Best In Show's high-achieving grandson.
Also boasting crosses of Rainbow Quest (USA) (4 X 3) and the Canadian Oaks heroine Flaming Page (USA) (Bull Page {USA}), Giga Kick boasts a pedigree of considerable depth with his sire's three strains of the great Nijinsky II (Can) complemented by his dam's strain of that horse's three-quarter brother The Minstrel (Can).
And Flaming Page and Best In Show are both descendants of the wonderful mare Torpenhow (GB) (Torpoint {GB}).
Rekindled Applause is one of the seven winners produced by Rekindled Affair (Ire) (Rainbow Quest {USA}), also dam of the G2 Feehan S. and G2 AAMI Vase winner Rekindled Interest (Redoute's Choice again), the US based Group 3 winner Where We Left Off (GB) (Dr Devious {Ire}) and the French Listed winner Porticcio (Ire) (Lomitas {GB}).
G2 Spirit Of Boom Classic, $300,000, 1200m
Charging through late, Cifrado (Encryption) recorded an apt victory - being the first stakes winner from the debut crop of his dual Group-winning sire who stands at Eureka Stud, also home to Spirit Of Boom.
Bred by Black Soil Bloodstock, he was sold by Eureka to Cliff Little for $320,000 at last year's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
He is the third live foal and third stakes horse for the city winner Madame Fly (Excites), also the dam of the Listed Eureka Stud (there is a theme here!) Classic winner Miami Fleiss (Spirit Of Boom) and the stakes-placed Cochrane (Spirit Of Boom).
Sadly Cifrado is Madame Fly's second last foal as she died after foaling a Spirit Of Boom filly in the spring of 2021.
Madame Fly's dam is the stakes-placed multiple city winner McFly (Perugino {USA}) who also produced the G3 George Moore S. winner Chapter And Verse (Rothesay) and the stakes placed Soaring Heart (Show A Heart).
Cifrado is the third stakes winner (from 35 winners and 41 runners) combining Octagonal (NZ) and Danewin, noting that the former's influential dam Eight Carat (GB) (Pieces Of Eight {Ire}) is the latter's grandam.
He also carries three Danehill (USA) strains - Exceed And Excel, Camarena and Danewin.
G3 JRA Chairman's H., $200,000, 2000m
In consistent form this time in, Kalapour (Ire) (War Command {USA}) was well fancied in the market and too good.
The 11th stakes winner for his G1 Dewhurst S.-winning sire who is now based in Southern France, Kalapour was bred by His Highness The Aga Khan's Studs.
His dam Kaladena (Ire) (Daylami {Ire}) is also the dam of the Listed Lenebane S. winner Kalaxana (Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}). And her dam is the successful producer Kalamba (Ire) (Green Dancer {USA}) whose seven winners include the dual Group 1 winner Kalanisi (Ire), the G2 Scottish Derby winner Kalaman (Ire) (Desert Prince {Ire}) and the two times Listed winner Kaloura (Ire) (Sinndar {Ire}).
This is an international family that has also enjoyed local success with the Listed Mornington Cup winner Instrumentalist (Ire) (Amadeus Wolf {GB}) and the dual Group winner Saxon.
G3 Rough Habit Plate, $250,000, 2000m
Having his first start in Australia having won a Matamata 2000 metre maiden last month, Special Swey (NZ) (Sweynesse) put forward his G1 Queensland Derby credentials with this smart performance.
Bred by Explosive Breeding and passed in at the 2021 New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run, Special Swey is the sixth stakes winner for his Novara Park-based sire, a dual Group 3-winning son of Lonhro.
His dam three times winning dam Mia Mamma (NZ) (Per Incanto {USA}) is out of a mare who was unplaced and whose grandam dam was unraced. But there is black type further back, this being the family of the recent G1 Sydney Cup winner Explosive Jack (NZ) (Jakkalberry {Ire}) who won three Derbys, finishing a close-up third as favourite in the Queensland version in 2021.
Mia Mamma was served last spring by Staphanos (Jpn) having lost her 2022 foal. Her previous foal is a Staphanos filly and before that, she produced a full sister to Special Swey.
Listed Bright Shadow S., $160,000, 1110m
Twice stakes placed during a consistent career that has seen her win six of her 23 starts, Majestic Shot (Shooting To Win) was a deserved - and impressive - winner at stakes level for the first time.
The 10th stakes winner for her Oakland Park Stud G1 Caulfield Guineas-winning sire, she was bred by S Bissett and I.C Woodford-Smith and sold by Ashleigh Thoroughbreds for $11,000 to Grand Syndicates and J Price at the 2019 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.
She is one of the four winners produced by the unraced Curtsey (Viscount) who died in the spring of 2021 with her final foal being a colt by Unite And Conquer.
Curtsey's dam is the Listed Vanity S. winner Greeting (Canny Lad) whose six winners include the stakes placegetters Sampeah (Exceed And Excel), Parthian (Lonhro) and Hassle (Zabeel {NZ}).
Majestic Shot was the second of today's stakes winners (Cifrado by Encryption the other) line-bred to the mighty mare Eight Carat (GB) (Pieces Of Eight {Ire}) who appears in this mare's pedigree via her descendant Shooting To Win and her great-grandson Viscount.
Belmont: G3 Belmont Sprint, $200,000, 1400m
He was up in class taking on the older horses but Bustler (Playing God) showed that he is one of Western Australia's most promising 3-year-olds with this classy performance.
A six-time winner from 10, Bustler was bred by Mungrup Stud and sold by Ruby Racing & Breeding to Ridgeport Holdings for $130,000 at the 2021 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale.
The 12th stakes winner for his Darling View Thoroughbreds-based dual G1 Kingston Town S. winning sire, Bustler is the first foal for the three times winner Cosmah Domination (Oratorio) whose second foal A Lot Of Good Men (A Lot {USA}) is also showing plenty of potential - that two-year-old winning two of his first four starts.
Last spring paying a return visit to Playing God having foaled a filly by him in September, Cosmah Domination has a yearling filly by Maschino.
Cosmah Domination is one of the six winners for the placed Mia Myth (Don't Say Halo {USA}) who also produced the stakes-placed Amelia Storm (Stormy's Son) and three other city winners.
Members of this family include the NZ Champion 3Y0 Filly Kate's Myth (Kaoru Star) and her daughter, the South African Champion 3Y0 Filly Mythical Play (NZ) (Defensive Play {USA}).
Flemington: Listed Andrew Ramsden, $500,000, 2800m
Outstaying and outclassing her rivals with this dominant performance - putting 5.5l on her rivals - Lunar Flare (Fiorente {Ire}) enhanced her already great record over staying trips.
Scratched on the morning of last year's G1 Melbourne Cup, the classy 7-year-old is now fully qualified for this year's running as she attempts to become the first Melbourne Cup winner by a Melbourne Cup winner since Black Knight (Silver Knight {NZ}) in 1984.
Bred by Mojo Thoroughbreds, Lunar Flare is one of the eight stakes winners sired by her Widden Victoria-based sire who is doing a particularly good job with daughters of Lunar Flare's dam sire Encosta De Lago... 13 runners so far, 10 winners including three stakes winners.
Fiorente (Ire) hails from the same Simon's Shoes (GB) (Simon Square {GB}) family as Encosta de Lago's sire Fairy King (USA) noting that Lunar Flare's dam is bred on a 3 X 4 cross of Fairy King's dam Fairy Bridge (USA) (Bold Reason {USA}), also the dam of Sadler's Wells (USA).
Lunar Flare is one of nine winners for the reliable broodmare My Fair Lago (Encosta De Lago) who has also produced the stakes-placed gallopers Sea Of Tranquility (Dash For Cash) and Eagle Command (Dash For Cash) whilst her winning daughter Lunar Lights (Bianconi {USA}) is the dam of the Listed Taj Rossi Series Final winner Honey's Steel Gold (Keep The Faith).
Listed Members' H., $160,000, 1600m
Putting in the big strides late to become the second stakes winner within 10 minutes for the Godolphin blue, Character (Teofilo {Ire}) was in the winner's circle for the first time since taking out last year's G2 Queensland Guineas.
Also winner of last year's G2 Tulloch S., he is one of his former shuttling sire's 110 stakes winners and he is the first foal for the multiple city winner Monogram (Medaglia D'Oro {USA}) whose second foal Stylised (by Teofilo's son Kermadec {NZ}) won his maiden at Rosehill last spring.
Served last spring by Kermadec after foaling a Ghaiyyath (Ire) colt, Monogram is one of the seven winners for the imported Daanet Al Dunya (USA) (Rahy {USA}), also the dam of the G2 Pago Pago S. winner Tarquin (Hard Spun {USA}).
Her dam is the classy broodmare Jood (USA) (Nijinsky II {Can}) whose seven winners including the globetrotting multiple Group 1 winner Fantastic Light (USA) and the Listed Pretty Polly S. winner Hi Dubai (USA) (Rahy {USA}).
Also third dam of the G1 BTC Cup winner Your Song, Jood is out of the outstanding broodmare Kamar (Can) (Key To The Mint {USA}) - dam of the Group 1 winners Key To The Moon (Can) (Wajima {USA}), Seaside Attraction (USA) (Seattle Slew {USA}) and Gorgeous (USA) (Slew O'Gold {USA}).
This is a prolific Group 1 producing branch of the ever-flourishing Pretty Polly (GB) (Gallinule {GB}) family. Bred on a 3 X 4 Sadler's Wells (USA) cross, Character boasts duplications of the excellent mares Natalma (USA) (Native Dancer {USA}), Almahmoud (USA) (Mahmoud {Fr}) and Flower Bowl (USA) (Alibhai {GB}).
