Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Thursday at Wyong, we look at a Rubick gelding whose second dam is the Queensland Oaks runner-up Sonata (Palace Music {USA}), while in the sixth race, we look at an old family for Fairview Park that goes right back to Stanley Wootton.
Wyong, Race 1, 12.10pm AEST, The Iris Foundation – WRC Charity Partner Mdn, $40,000, 1000m
World Alliance, 3-year-old gelding (Rubick x Global Anthem {General Nediym})
This unraced gelding is from the General Nediym mare Global Anthem, who was a 2-year-old winner and is a half-sister to Faster Son (Fastnet Rock). Faster Son was Listed placed, and the second dam on this page is the smart mare Sonata, who was a Group 3 winner and runner-up to Arctic Scent (Blazing Sword) in the G1 Queensland Oaks.
Three-year-old World Alliance is a homebred for Hobartville Stud, in whose colours he races. This will be the gelding’s first start.
Rubick | Standing at Swettenham Stud
He is trained at Warwick Farm by Matthew Smith, and he’s had two preparations. As a 2-year-old, he was last in a debut trial at Canterbury, after which he was put out and brought back in last month. Since then, he’s been a trial winner and third in his latest outing on May 22 at Hawkesbury. In this debut, he will have jockey Rachel King from barrier eight.
Wyong, Race 6, 3.10pm AEST, WRC Proudly Supporting the Prostate Cancer Foundation Provincial Mdn, $45,000, 1100m
Luai, 3-year-old gelding (Epaulette x Timing {Duporth})
This gelding is a homebred for his breeder, the Nutman family, and comes with an interesting pedigree. He is from the Duporth mare Timing, who was a four-time winner and half-sister to the triple Listed winner Title (Honours List {USA}). Both Timing and Title are from the Al Jaasi mare Claudia, who was also a homebred for the Nutman family, while the stallion Al Jassi stood at the Nutmans’ property, Fairview Park, for several seasons in the 1990s through 2013.
The third dam on this page is Regal Stardom (Princely Son {GB}), who was bred by Stanley Wootton in 1979 but who fell into Nutman hands, so this is an old Fairview Park family that goes back three generations.
Epaulette | Standing at Jockey Club of Turkey Stud Farms
Luai, by Epaulette, is trained at Hawkesbury by Claire Lever. He has been promising in trials, with a fourth and last-start first, the latter on May 22 at home. In this debut, he will have jockey Keagan Latham from barrier two.
Looking Back
Our Looking Ahead selections on Wednesday went okay. At Warwick Farm, Piercing Arrow (I Am Invincible) was a winner, while Siglo De Oro (Lope De Vega {Ire}) was unplaced. At Doomben, Eruptive Force (NZ) (Staphanos {Jpn}) was a scratching.
