After Thursday’s history-making opening day, which saw Lot 64, a filly by Frankel (GB), knocked down for $825,000 to Mitchell Bloodstock (FBAA), the 2023 Inglis Great Southern Sale concluded on Friday with another competitive day of trade.

At A Glance

In total, 380 weanlings were catalogued at the 2023 Inglis Great Southern Sale, and as of 3pm AEST, 218 lots (70 per cent) have been traded. Compared to the 2022 sale, where 375 weanlings were catalogued, 267 (81 per cent) were sold.

Ninety-four (30 per cent) lots were passed in during this year’s weanling session. The 2022 sale recorded 64 lots (19 per cent).

As of 3pm AEST, the 2023 Inglis Great Southern Sale weanling session has grossed $9,823,000, below the gross figure of $12,103,500 achieved in 2022.

The average and median of $45,060 and $16,000, respectively, are below the 2022 figures of $45,331 and $22,000.

However, the overall sale-topping weanling Lot 64 Frankel (GB) x Vedema (Fr) filly, who made $825,000 to Mitchell Bloodstock (FBAA) on Day 1, thoroughly eclipsed the 2022 top-priced Lot 19, who made $280,000.

Friday's top-lot weanling was Lot 318, a daughter of Frankel (GB) from the Dubawi (Ire) mare Murasaki (GB) purchased by Yulong for $475,000.

Forty-seven broodmares were catalogued at the 2023 Inglis Great Southern Sale, significantly lower than the 2022 figure of 79 lots. As of 3pm AEST, 27 lots have sold, and 17 lots have passed in this year’s edition (2023); in comparison, 46 lots (75 per cent) were traded in 2022, and 15 lots (25 per cent) passed in.

The 2023 figure for the broodmare session of the Inglis Great Southern Sale grossed $2,125,000 million. The figure is below the 2022 figure of $2,387,500 achieved.

The average recorded was $78,704 and a median of $40,000; the 2022 average and median were $51,902 and $40,000.

As was the trend of the weanling session, the broodmare sale provided a sale topper of Lot 381 Veranskova (Written Tycoon) who realised $510,000 going the way of Konj P/L atf Collier Family Trust, significantly higher than the 2022 figure of $260,000 achieved by Lot 387.

Yulong secures session topper

Having bought two colts by the Juddmonte Farms’ Frankel (GB) at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale in May, Yulong’s desire for the superhorse continued on Friday at the Inglis Great Southern Sale when the operation went to $475,000 to secure a filly by Frankel. The price paid makes the filly the highest-priced lot of the weanling Friday session and final day.

The bay filly was catalogued as Lot 318 and offered by Esker Lodge is the third foal from the Dubawi (Ire) mare Murasaki (GB). She was a winner over 1500 metres in France and is a daughter of Michita (USA) (Dynaformer {USA}), who won the G2 Ribblesdale S. at Royal Ascot and was placed in the G1 Prix Vermeille at Longchamp and the G1 Yorkshire Oaks.

Hailing from a prominent black-type family and being by one of the world’s best sires, the filly is a collector's item. In addition, the filly is bred on a proven cross, progeny by Frankel from daughters of the great Dubawi combined to produce Godolphin’s G1 Derby at Epsom Downs hero Adayar (Ire).

Yulong Chief Operating Officer Sam Fairgray described the filly, “She (Lot 318) was a lovely filly, and the Dubawi cross has been fantastic with Frankel.

“On top of that, the filly was a great mover.”

Frankel continues to be a dominant force on and off the track, having supplied the 2023 Inglis Great Southern Sale topper yesterday when his daughter Lot 64 was knocked down for $825,000 to Mitchell Bloodstock (FBBA).

Silverdale and McGuire combine to score Capitalist filly

Silverdale Farm and Brian McGuire combined to score Lot 336, a stunning filly by Newgate Stud-based Capitalist, for $460,000.

Silverdale Farm Manager Rob Petith described the filly, “She (Lot 336) was the pick of the weanlings we shortlisted, and we are so excited to have purchased her. We can’t wait to get her back to the Silverdale hills.”

“She (Lot 336) was the pick of the weanlings we shortlisted, and we are so excited to have purchased her. We can’t wait to get her back to the Silverdale hills.” - Rob Petith

The filly is the sixth foal from the unraced Not A Single Doubt mare Passarelle. She hails from a strong and current pedigree and has proven to be an outstanding broodmare.

Passarelle’s latest runner, the 2-year-old colt Bases Loaded (Deep Field), is a winner who has been placed in the G1 Champagne S., the G2 Skyline S., and the G3 Pago Pago S.

She is also the dam of Shebringzit (Sebring), who was placed in the G3 Chairman’s S. and finished fourth in the G1 South Australian Derby.

In addition, the smart Group 2-winning filly Caste (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) hails from this family.

“Brian McGuire has done all the leg work with this filly. Brian identified the filly and put it up towards the boss (Steve Grant) and I,” Petith told TDN AusNZ.

“She just looked to be a gorgeous style of filly. Obviously, we have an association with her half-brother, Bases Loaded and Newgate Farm. Bases Loaded has shown a lot of ability, which certainly appealed to us.

“Lot 336 is a beautiful quality filly. She moves so well. Initially, we were buying her as a pinhook, that’s our usual method to reoffer, and that will still very much be a possibility, but we will keep our minds open.”

Petith admits they had to pay a higher price than anticipated but felt given the filly’s current pedigree; she has plenty of residual value.

“We probably had to be stronger than we initially thought. We will get her home and see how she stacks up. A filly like this by Capitalist, who is a half-sister to two stakes-placed horses she’s got some great residual value.”

Burnewang North Pastoral prove happy hunting ground for Mitchell

James Mitchell of Mitchell Bloodstock (FBAA) was back at it on the final day of the Inglis Great Southern Sale, having signed the cheque for the sale-topper from Burnewang North Pastoral on the opening day of the sale, the vendor provided another on Mitchell’s wishlist when he went to $400,000 to secure Lot 323 a brown filly by Maurice (Jpn).

“We came to the Inglis Great Southern Sale to buy the best three or four fillies, and I’m pretty confident we have done that, but time will tell,” Mitchell shared with TDN AusNZ.

Lot 323 is the fourth foal from the Commands mare National Velvet. She was a winner and has produced The Fortune Teller (Caravaggio {USA}), won the G3 Carbine Club S., and was placed in the G2 Sandown Guineas.

The filly hails from the family of Complacent, who won the G1 Spring Champion S. and the G2 Chelmsford S. He was also placed in the G1 Victoria Derby.

“She (Lot 323) is a beautiful filly by a proven Group 1 sire. The buyer has bought these fillies to race; he’s dreaming of winning a Flight S. or a Thousand Guineas success, maybe even an Oaks.”

Mitchell was complimentary towards the efforts of Inglis.

“Inglis must be commended for getting a solid buying bench to the sale. As we have seen, the good types sold very well all year.”

“I just loved her” - Williams on Veranskova

The star of the broodmare session at the Inglis Great Southern Sale proved to be Lot 381 Veranskova (Written Tycoon), offered by Alderson Racing was purchased for $510,000 by Konj P/L atf Collier Family Trust.

Andrew Williams of Andrew Williams Bloodstock (FBAA) signed on behalf of the purchaser.

“I loved her. My client needed a strong quality mare with an outcross pedigree,” Williams told TDN AusNZ.

Trained by Cindy Alderson, Veranskova was a brilliant performer with a particular affinity for the Flemington straight. She retires a four-time winner, including placing at Group 3 level.

Veranskova is the daughter of the Stravinsky (USA) mare Kirvinsky (NZ). She was a three-time winner who won the Listed Moomba Plate. In addition to Veranskova, Kirvinsky has produced the Group 3 placegetter Miss Vixen (Foxwedge).

“Veranskova is a fast stakes-performed daughter of the Champion Sire Written Tycoon. She hails from a hugely commercial family.

“The form around her is very strong. During the Melbourne Cup Carnival, she was placed behind a high-class sprinter in Asfoora over 1000 metres in the G3 Furphy Sprint. Veranskova has beaten the quality of Jal Lei, Isotope, A Very Fine Red and Juan Diva,” Williams enthused.

“She’s a four-time winner, including twice at Flemington. Her penultimate start, she defeated the Group winners Seradess, Snapped and Belsielle.”

With a pedigree free of Danehill (USA) blood, Williams feels there are multiple options for the mare’s first season at stud.

“She’s from a strong female family, and being from a family free of Danehill blood, she will be straightforward to mate.”

Hutch hails sale season a success

Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch was thrilled with the results and participation in the last in-person auction in Australia of the year.

The Great Southern Sale pulled the curtain down on a fantastic sale season for Inglis.

“To achieve an 11 per cent rise in turnover for our breeding stock sales is very satisfying for Inglis, and especially considering supply is exceeding demand in certain parts of the market,” Hutch said.

“The sale season and the Great Southern Sale have thrown up some fabulous results. To sell almost $23 million worth of weanlings, is a really pleasing result and we have only been able to achieve that due to the wonderful support of vendors.

“There is no doubt that the market in respect of breeding stock and weanlings has been more selective in 2023, but we are very happy with what we have achieved and have been able to facilitate in Sydney and Melbourne and as ever, we expect there will be a number of fantastic stories to emerge from these sales.”

Saturday preview: six things to keep an eye on

9 min read
All eyes will be on Eagle Farm on Saturday for arguably Queensland’s premier raceday. The nine-race card is full of black type and includes the G1 JJ Atkins and G1 Stradbroke H. Elsewhere, a 2-year-old Fastnet Rock colt from a Group 1 heroine is slated to debut at Sandown-Hillside, while Belmont has the G3 Strickland S.

Think About It goes for seven straight, second Group 1

Winning machine Think About It (So You Think {NZ}) will be looking to add to his phenomenal record in Saturday’s G1 Stradbroke H. at Eagle Farm.

The 4-year-old, who races in the Proven Thoroughbreds silks, has only tasted defeat once in his nine-start career and chalked up his maiden Group 1 success in the Kingsford-Smith Cup at this track on May 27.

Think About It will race with synthetic hoof filler in one of his feet, but trainer Joseph Pride is confident it will not impact the gelding’s performance.

As is usually the case in the Stradbroke, there is a host of chances, including blueblood colt Hawaii Five Oh - a 3-year-old son of I Am Invincible and Aloha (Encosta De Lago). The latter won in top company and also produced the ill-fated multiple Group 2 victress Libertini (I Am Invincible).

Hawaii Five Oh is trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott and they won the race last year with Alligator Blood (All Too Hard).

The colt was bred by Gerry Harvey and is raced by him, along with John Singleton and prominent broadcaster Ray Hadley.

The most-recent 3-year-old to win this race was Impending in 2017 and before that it was Sincero (Umatilla {NZ}) in 2011.

Impending | Standing at Darley

Interestingly, only two winners have carried more than 56kg to win in the last 40 years, they being Rough Habit (NZ) (Roughcast {USA}) and Campaign King. The former shouldered 58.5kg in 1992, so did the latter in 1988. Local hero Show A Heart lumped 56kg to victory in 2002.

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Ruthless Dame (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) will be looking to become a dual Group 1 winner, as will stablemate Royal Merchant (Merchant Navy).

James Cummings has two runners - Vilana (Hallowed Crown) and Aft Cabin (Astern).

It looks to be a great and competitive race, just as always!

The final 2-year-old Group 1 of the season is a ripper

The G1 Strabroke H. is the headline act on Saturday’s Eagle Farm card, but the G1 JJ Atkins holds plenty of interest, with a quality field of juveniles looking to become an elite-level winner at two.

Azula (Maurice {Jpn}) is one of four fillies in the $1 million contest and she is on the quick back-up following her narrow victory in the Listed The Phoenix last Saturday.

Tim Clark takes over from Rachel King and the Waterhouse and Bott-trained filly will jump from barrier 11.

The stable won the race in 2021 with Converge (Frankel {GB}), while Waterhouse was triumphant in her own right in 2014 with Almalad (Al Maher) and 2013 courtesy of Romantic Touch (Northern Meteor).

Chris Waller is a three-time winner of the JJ Atkins, tasting success with The Autumn Sun (in 2018), Press Statement (2015) and Pressday (2010).

He has three colts engaged - Chrysaor (Better Than Ready), Congregation (Snitzel) and Tannhauser (Dundeel {NZ}).

Congregation is a younger brother to the G1 Golden Slipper heroine Estijaab and made $2,250,000 at the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. He is unbeaten from two starts and is another that raced last Saturday (he won at Rosehill).

Tannhauser won well at Randwick on May 27 and will be looking to follow in the footsteps of his stablemate, Militarize (NZ), as a 2-year-old Group 1 hero by Dundeel (NZ).

Another runner by Dundeel is Miracle Of Love and she will be worth a fortune if she is able to get the job done, being a daughter of the great Miss Finland (Redoute’s Choice) - a five-time Group 1 victress.

Michael Dee returns from Hong Kong to take the ride aboard the Paul Messara-trained Miracle Of Love, who is a half-sister to the Group 1 winner Stay With Me (Street Cry {Ire}).

Neasham chases hat-trick in G2 The Q22

Top trainer Annabel Neasham is gunning for three consecutive triumphs in the G2 The Q22 at Eagle Farm.

Neasham won the race in 2011 with her stable star Zaaki (GB) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}), before Numerian (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) was much the best 12 months ago.

Numerian is back to defend his title and heads into the $1.2 million race in good form, having finished second behind Huetor (Fr) (Archipenko {USA}) in the G1 Doomben Cup on May 20.

There has been five dual-winners of the race - Redcraze (NZ) (Red Mars {GB}), Tulloch (NZ), Striking Force (Osborne {Fr}), Roman Consul (NZ) (Agricola {GB}) and Scenic Shot (Scenic {Ire}).

The Team Snowden-trained Huetor is again sure to provide strong competition to Numerian, so too will Without A Fight (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), who displayed a dazzling turn of foot when taking out the G3 Lord Mayors Cup at this track on May 27.

Without A Fight’s co-trainer Sam Freedman has stated the 6-year-old has taken enormous benefit from his first-up victory.

Duais (Shamus Award) - a triple Group 1 heroine - brings an element of class to the race and her fresh-up run was also full of merit (she was fourth in the Doomben Cup, beaten 1.53l).

Without A Fight (Ire), the current favourite for The Q22 at Eagle Farm | Image courtesy of Racing Photos

The Peter Moody-trained Fame (Manhattan Rain) is the lone 3-year-old in the race and he lines up after finishing second behind the rising star Kovalica (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}) in the G1 Queensland Derby on May 27.

Werther (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) is the last 3-year-old winner of the race and he upstaged his older rivals in 2015.

The race has had various titles, including the Queen’s Plate, King’s Plate, Royal S. and PJ O’Shea S.

Snowdens with bases loaded in Dane Ripper

Saturday’s star-studded Eagle Farm card concludes with the G2 Dane Ripper S., which is named in honour of the four-time Group 1 heroine, who won the G1 Stradbroke H. in 1997.

Father-son training duo Peter and Paul Snowden will launch a three-pronged attack on the $300,000 event for fillies and mares.

The Snowdens will send out Revolutionary Miss (Russian Revolution), Mirra Vision (Lonhro) and Tycoon Evie (Written Tycoon). All three already have a Group win to their credit.

Opal Ridge, the current favourite for the G2 Dane Ripper S. at Eagle Farm | Image courtesy of Ashlea Brennan

Chris Waller’s name features on the honour roll four times; he first won the race in 2012 with Red Tracer (Dane Shadow), then again with her 12 months later. His third victory came in 2018 with Invincibella (I Am Invincible) and she defended her title in 2019.

Waller will be represented by September Run (Exceed And Excel) and Roots (Press Statement) this year. The former is the highest-rated runner and will be asked to carry the top weight of 59.5kg. Roots has the services of James McDonald and he has won the race on three occasions - with Hazard (Flying Spur) in 2015 and twice aboard Invincibella.

The dominant favourite is Luke Pepper’s 3-year-old Opal Ridge. The Rubick filly - a dual Listed scorer - is looking for the biggest win of her career.

Sandown opener a beauty

The first race at Sandown-Hillside sees some juveniles with exposed form come up against a number of well-bred juveniles that are on debut.

It’s a couple of first starters that dominate pre-race betting, with Chris Waller’s Listentozou (NZ) (Zoustar) and Peter Moody’s Miss Gabbiano (Better Than Ready) at the top of the market.

Listentozou realised $350,000 at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Consigned by Westbury Stud, she was bought by Chris Waller Racing.

Listentozou (NZ) as a yearling | Image courtesy of Magic Millions

The colt is the first live foal of the winless High Chaparral (Ire) mare Lady De Bathe, with his grandam being the Listed scorer Jersey Lily (Catbird).

Miss Gabbiano realised $170,000 at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Offered by Yarramalong Park, she was purchased by Dalziel Bloodstock/Moody Racing.

The filly is out of the unraced Exceed And Excel mare Seagull and she herself is a half-sister to the Listed winner Soothing (Lonhro). Going back further, the filly is related to the great Black Caviar (Bel Esprit), as well as All Too Hard.

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Mantua is bred in the purple, being a son of Fastnet Rock and the triple Group 1 victress Viadana (NZ) (Towkay). The colt was consigned by Newhaven Park at the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling and was knocked down to Ciaron Maher Bloodstock for $375,000.

Mantua as a yearling | Image courtesy of Inglis

Mantua trialled at Werribee on May 16, finishing third over 800 metres on a Heavy 8.

Of those that have been to the races, Links (Spieth {NZ}) ran well at his debut, finishing fifth, 2.95l behind Axzelina (Snitzel), while Altruist (Snitzel) boasts a fourth behind The Instructor (Russian Revolution) in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (Colts and Geldings). Altruist made $400,000 as a yearling and is from Carry On Alice (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}) - a multiple Group 1 winner and Champion Sprinter and Older Female in South Africa in 2016/17.

Small field for G3 Strickland Stakes

Just seven gallopers will face the starter in Belmont’s G3 Strickland S. - a race that has been won by horses including Iron Horse (Zephyr Zip {NZ}), Marasco (Scenic {Ire}), God Has Spoken, Scales Of Justice (Not A Single Doubt) and Galaxy Star (Redoute’s Choice).

The race is run under weight-for-age conditions and this year’s edition sees just one 3-year-old - Queen Alina (Mahuta). She has been a model of consistency, boasting four wins and four placings from nine starts, but this is her first try in stakes class.

Dom To Shoot (Shooting To Win) will be handled by William Pike, and the Sean and Jake Casey-trained gelding won the G3 Northam S. three runs back, before running second in the G3 Hyperion S. last time out.

Participants proposed more sensible prizemoney plan

6 min read

Written by TROA with contribution from Jonathan Munz

There has been criticism by Victorian racing industry participants unhappy with the recent announcement by Racing Victoria of cuts to Victorian prizemoney and the circumstances surrounding it.

Prior to the recent Racing Victoria announcement, the industry participant bodies, comprising associations for owners (TROA), breeders (TBV), trainers (ATA) and jockeys (VJA), provided a joint submission to Racing Victoria, detailing what they believed would provide a much more sensible prizemoney allocation than the one announced by RVL. That submission also indicated that Racing Victoria needs to be more transparent about and focussed on cutting the administrative and operating overheads of its own organisation before cutting prizemoney, and that Racing Victoria could minimise negative sentiment to participants and the industry by making more sensible prizemoney allocations.

Owners' Association Chairman, Jonathan Munz, said: “We told RVL that any funding gap must be funded first from reasonable cuts to RVL administrative overheads and expenses, before RVL seeks to reduce prizemoney to fund its shortfall. We also said that they need to look at reducing existing misallocations in prizemoney for pet projects like The All-Star Mile, to avoid the need to reduce mainstream prizemoney levels for Saturday, midweek and country races. Unfortunately, they did not follow our advice on getting prizemoney allocations correctly balanced. The end result was that they still got it wrong by cutting mainstream prizemoney for midweek races, public holiday fixtures and some country races, by a total of $3.385 million.

“The end result was that they still got it wrong by cutting mainstream prizemoney for midweek races, public holiday fixtures and some country races, by a total of $3.385 million.” - Jonathan Munz

“That could have been avoided with more sensible allocations. They also cut prizemoney for important Group 1 races which should not have been cut, with the Underwood Stakes, Turnbull Stakes and Moir Stakes being cut from $1 million to $750,000. Again, this could have been avoided, with a number of races with higher than required prizemoney left intact or even increased. However, on the positive side, I believe that the united opposition of participants prevented some of the worst planned cuts to mainstream prizemoney.”

For transparency, TROA have released a spreadsheet showing our contrasting suggested prizemoney allocation. It is much better balanced. The savings from re-allocating from The All-Star Mile and other races not only leaves intact the $3.385 million cut by RVL from mainstream midweek and country racing, but also avoids cutting the Underwood, Turnbull and Moir. It also increases Listed and Group 3 minimum prizemoney to the levels recently announced in NSW, which would have been a positive spin rather than the negative messaging from RVL. The other savings TROA have identified from reducing cost misallocations was to be re-allocated to other prizemoney, unless RVL’s funding gap could not be met from overhead reductions.

TROA proposals include reducing The All-Star Mile to a $2 million race, with its supposed $2 million marketing budget also deleted. That would save $4 million. Munz takes issue with comments made recently by Brian Kruger trying to justify the level of investment in The All-Star Mile, “I find them misleading. In reality, the wagering performance of The All-Star Mile is only slightly above that for the Newmarket Handicap and the raceday attendance at The All-Star Mile continues to be disappointingly low and well below that for the Newmarket. However, contrast the investment in those two races, with the Newmarket having prizemoney of $1.5 million. The claims of extra customer engagement and acquisition from The All-Star Mile have never been quantified or substantiated, despite numerous requests for that data and we do not believe those claims are reasonable or justified. Any additional customer engagement will work just as well if it is a $2 million race, as suggested by us.

“Other clear misallocations detailed in our submission are $500,000 for the Country Discovery (it should be a maximum of $200,000), $500,000 for the Blue Sapphire (it should remain at $200,000), and $500,000 for the new ill-conceived Country Cup winners' race (which is a poor concept and should be deleted). Similarly, the Thousand Guineas also does not need to increase to $1.5 million and can remain at $1 million. And, it is clearly wrong that the Moonee Valley Cup carries the same prizemoney as the Underwood, Turnbull and Moir. Full details are set out in our spreadsheet.

“In reality, the wagering performance of The All-Star Mile is only slightly above that for the Newmarket Handicap and the raceday attendance at The All-Star Mile continues to be disappointingly low and well below that for the Newmarket.” - Jonathan Munz

“Our submission was contributed to and agreed by a range of the leading experts in the industry, including major investors and participants and respected former members of the Australian Pattern Committee. Hopefully some informed public debate will lead to a future re-assessment of these decisions.”

In relation to the introduction of a 10th race for Saturday metro racedays, the jockeys and race clubs have raised concerns about the extra time involved and potential detrimental impact on tracks. The TROA view is that these concerns need to be properly considered and addressed. We are also concerned that this proposal has been announced without financial or other operational details, which participants and race clubs have requested be provided.

“We have asked the RVL board to meet and hear first-hand from a range of major industry investors and experts, who, like us, are deeply concerned about recent RVL announcements, in relation to both prizemoney and the much-criticised changes to the Melbourne Spring Carnival program,” Munz said.

James O'Brien | Image courtesy of Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria

Breeders association President, James O’Brien said: “Apart from supporting the joint participants' submission, TBV is also concerned about cuts to prizemoney on the VOBIS Owners and Breeders feature raceday. We think this is inappropriate, given that breeders and owners have paid VOBIS Gold registration fees on the basis of a given level of prizemoney and individual studs have paid large amounts to support that raceday.

“On a separate note, we strongly oppose the new spring program changes and in particular the pushing out by five weeks of the G1 Thousand Guineas. We have urged RVL to reverse its decision on the Thousand Guineas.”

BASET Thoroughbred Endeavour Awards

3 min read

Cover image courtesy of BASET

The new BASET Thoroughbred Endeavour Awards were announced by The British-Australia Society Education Trust (BASET), in partnership with Godolphin, the British Racing School (BRS), and Thoroughbred Industry Careers (TIC) on Thursday. The awards support deserving young people from Britain and Australia embarking on careers in the equine and racing industries.

Chief executive of Thoroughbred Industry Careers (TIC) Lindy Maurice explained how the partnership was formed.

“The BASET Thoroughbred Endeavour Awards will be a yearly award. Diana Cooper and Jim Paltridge were the catalyst in bringing all parties together. Between Diana and Jim they thought of the idea and brought in the British Racing School and TIC to involve us and give our students the opportunity,” Maurice told TDN AusNZ.

“It has been on Thoroughbred Industry Careers’ agenda for some time to have an exchange program of some degree and give students the opportunity to travel and see the industry in other parts of the world and most importantly a support system which BASET will provide.

“BASET has been the link in the chain to bring it all together and offer these scholarships which are hugely helpful to a young person.”

“BASET has been the link in the chain to bring it all together and offer these scholarships which are hugely helpful to a young person.” - Lindy Maurice

Maurice touched on the globalisation of the thoroughbred racing and breeding industries and how it is beneficial for participants to gain experience in other jurisdictions.

“The industry is so international these days and I don’t feel we promote enough opportunities and experiences gained from travelling overseas and learning how things are done.”

The first recipient is Grace McBeath, who is from New South Wales, Australia. The aim of the program is to offer participants the chance to further develop their career, gain new skills and experience international practices on a six-month exchange program. The inaugural award will provide funding to support a six-month racing stable placement organised by The British Racing School which will involve working for Sir Mark Prescott at Heath House Stables and Andrew Balding at Kingsclere Park House Stables. Later this year, the opportunity will be reciprocated and a second BASET Thoroughbred Endeavour Award will be made to support a young person from Great Britain in Australia, arranged by the TIC.

“Grace (McBeth) was an award winner from her year with Thoroughbred Industry Careers and she stood out to us as somebody with a great attitude and a strong work ethic. We felt she was a great representative to send abroad,” Maurice said.

“She proved herself to be an asset to any team and a very pleasant girl.”

John May, BASET's Chair of Trustees, said, “We are thrilled to have partnered with The British Racing School and Thoroughbred Industry Careers to create this incredible opportunity for our award winners, helping them to gain international experience working in racing. We hope this exciting initiative will mark the start of a long-term collaboration between our organisations to support deserving young people from Britain and Australia and strengthen the bilateral bond between the two countries. I would like to thank all the hard work done by Jim Paltridge on behalf of BASET and Diana Cooper of Godolphin, along with Andrew Brathwaite of BRS and Lindy Maurice from TIC in making this award happen.”

Popular result in Golden Topaz

Swan Hill-based trainer Nathan Hobson provided a popular result on Friday when his tough 7-year-old Yulong Storm (Scat Daddy {USA}) won the $150,000 Golden Topaz, the feature race on the first day of the Swan Hill carnival.

It was a memorable day for Madison Lloyd, who rode two winners and partnered with Yulong Storm. Lloyd was indentured to Hobson, and Yulong Storm was her first ride and winner at Flemington.

“It's very, very special,” Lloyd said.

“This horse is already special to me. The Topaz is one of those races that I've always dreamed of winning. Now I’ve done it for my old boss.”

Hefel and Gaudray tied in Premiership

Star apprentices Carleen Hefel and Celine Gaudray are tied on 23 winners apiece in their battle to win the Melbourne Apprentices’ Premiership.

If either Hefel or Gaudray wins the title, they will become the second woman to achieve the feat after Katelyn Mallyon was victorious in the 2011/12 season and again two years later.

“We’re good friends, and it’s a nice little rivalry. We need to improve in one area: to stay clear of the Racing Victoria stewards.”

Racing Victoria stewards have suspended the two apprentices at the same meeting twice in the past six weeks for whip breaches and careless riding.

Mosheen’s son to debut in Japan

Star Australian jockey Damian Lane will partner with the Noriyuki Hori-trained Danon Ayers Rock (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}) and will look to debut in Tokyo, Japan, on Sunday over 1800 metres.

The 2-year-old colt was sold for $5.2 million at the 2022 JRHA Select Sale in Japan and is the seventh foal from the outstanding Mosheen (Fastnet Rock).

Mosheen was a four-time Group 1 victress and placed in the G1 Golden Slipper.

Kermadec juvenile breaks through at Dubbo

The Clint Lundholm-trained Plenitude (Kermadec {NZ}) broke through at Dubbo on Friday to score a maiden victory.

Partnered by Grant Buckley, Plentitude won the juvenile handicap by 0.53l from Hellfire Express (Hellbent) and Duren (Duporth) further away in third.

Plenitude is the only foal from the Magic Albert mare Top Magic. She was the winner of five races.

Kibou is back in action on Saturday

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Kibou (Maurice {Jpn}) will resume on Saturday at Randwick over 1200 metres.

Kibou was last seen winning the G3 Up And Coming S. in August before an injury forced the son of Maurice (Jpn) to miss the remainder of the spring and autumn.

“We want to get rid of some of the ring rust and get him ready for the spring; there are some nice targets there for him,” co-trainer Waterhouse said.

“We may head towards the Golden Eagle, but that remains to be seen. He did show he was up to the better 3-year-olds in the spring.”

Rogerson is confident in Solidify

Co-trainer Graeme Rogerson is confident of a bold showing from Solidify (NZ) (Redwood {GB}) when the 2-year-old contests the G1 JJ Atkin S. at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

The Tuhikaramea conditioner co-trains the son of Redwood (GB) with his wife Debbie, and also shares in the ownership group of the promising galloper.

The 2-year-old was unplaced in the G2 BRC Sires’ Produce S. after a buffeting in the straight, and Rogerson believes a change of luck can see the colt give his Australian counterparts a run for their money in the hands of Ryan Elliot.

“I can’t believe he has drifted in the market ($18). I thought his first run was enormous,” he said.

“He had no luck and got flattened, but he picked himself up again to get to the line. Ryan thought he was going well turning for home and said if he got the run, he would have been right in it.

“He’s been eating everything since and galloped well on Tuesday morning. He’s doing a treat.

“This trip will make the horse, and it will be interesting on Saturday. I think he is something really special.”

Line ‘Em Up Loui wins Elvstroem Classic

On Friday, the Peter Moody-trained and co-owned Line ‘Em Up Loui (Dissident) performed tenaciously to win the $125,000 Elvstroem Classic at Swan Hill.

He is the second foal from the Swiss Ace mare Miss Delima. She was a nine-time winner and is a daughter of Magically (Danehill {USA}), who won the G2 Yallambee Classic.

Victorian jockeys call for earlier finishes

With the announcement that Racing Victoria will introduce a trial period for a 10th race in Melbourne on Saturdays, the Victorian Jockeys’ Association has requested a 12-month trial of earlier finishes to most night meetings.

Victorian Jockeys’ Association Chief Executive Matt Hyland said on Friday, “There’s no doubt there are potential positives by putting an extra race on Saturdays where it will generate the most wagering revenue but, from our point view, we need to look at the finishing times for night meetings and help release some of the work pressures facing riders at the back end of each week.

“Now is the time; if we are going to make these changes, let’s tip it on its head and finish at 8.30pm AEST for 75 per cent of our night meetings.”

VJA provide Bowditch update

Popular Victorian-based hoop Joe Bowditch has avoided serious injury following a fall when riding the Julien Welsh-trained Gracie Turf (Turffontein) in Race 7 at Werribee on Thursday.

The Victorian Jockeys’ Association revealed Bowditch’s scans had failed to find any fractures.

“Joe (Bowditch) has a mild concussion, a broken nose, teeth and lacerations to his mouth and lip,” Victorian Jockeys’ Association Chief Executive Matt Hyland shared.

Without A Fight leaves an impression on Zahra

The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained Without A Fight (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) has left a favourable impression on Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Mark Zahra.

Zahra will partner with the import in Saturday’s G2 The Q22 at Eagle Farm, but Zahra feels Without A Fight is a leading contender in the spring’s majors.

“Without A Fight was very impressive the other day. I’d never been on him before. We drew a wide gate. Everyone was happy to ride him back,” Zahra told Racing.com.

“I thought we’d run a nice third, and then I went to the line to win by 2l untouched. It was very impressive.”
